Picture this: you've hit some semblance of midlife. You're older, wiser and squishier around the middle. You have a career that pays the bills, little or big babies, good friends and bad habits, but all in all, life is fine. You're also caring for aging parents, worrying about the economy, wondering if your kid has ADHD and everything hurts when you lay down wrong but… you're fine. Especially when you get a drink in your hot little hand to ceremoniously flick your internal status to: off duty. But lately you've noticed that your favourite salve for the poky, jabby stresses of everyday life isn't doing the job like it used to. Even a couple of glasses of wine messes with your sleep more. Eases your anxiety less. And it takes you (way) longer to recover after a few too many. But still, you persist. After all, you're an ADULT. And adults deserve adulty rewards for making it through another day. Grey area drinking coach Sarah Rusbatch says we've been sold an impossible dream when it comes to 'having it all' and that the solution we've been offered, and willingly accepted, isn't rewarding us at all. At best it's dulling our light and at worst… it's standing between us and everything we want. One thing I know to be true is that sobriety takes us back to our most authentic selves and allows us to step into the body and life of the person we were always meant to be. From Beyond Booze by Sarah Rusbatch. Our relationship with alcohol is far from simple – it's a complex mix of psychology, history, genetics, habits, identity and emotion. Untangling that is equally complex, but in this chat Sarah and I give it a red hot go. We explore…* [02:45] Grey area drinking vs alcoholism * [04:55] The Australian drinking landscape - winners and losers * [06:38] Am I a grey area drinker? Over the past five years, it's been incredible to see how the alcohol-free landscape has changed. Pubs, restaurants and supermarkets boast a range of appealing 0% options. We're seeing a rise in AF communities, influencers, bars and events. There has been a marked cultural shift towards acceptance of not drinking – and that's in no small part down to today's guest.Andy Ramage is one of the world's leading alcohol-free performance coaches. Since his first appearance on this podcast, in 2019, countless listeners have got in touch to share how they've transformed their lives by giving up alcohol.Andy co-founded the One Year No Beer movement and recently co-created the Dryy app and AF community. Collectively, these innovations have helped hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of what he calls ‘middle lane' moderate drinkers transform their health and happiness. He is also the author of two best-selling books - The 28 Day Alcohol Free Challenge and Let's Do This, and is one of only a few coaches to hold a Masters degree in coaching psychology and positive psychology. Many of us discover alcohol as a teenager. We start to believe we can't socialise, dance or talk to strangers without it – and we carry these myths with us long into adulthood. We think others will find us boring if we don't drink. Hangovers become a celebrated end to a ‘great night out'. And we play down negative effects such as risky behaviour, poor sleep, low mood or junk food cravings.Andy is passionate about reversing all these beliefs and behaviours. He explains his ‘ambivalence seesaw' – a framework you can use to work out your current relationship with alcohol and start to shift it. We discuss why moderation isn't a good tactic, why Dry January often fails, and why slip-ups are part of the learning process. And he shares some valuable advice on coping with social pressure to drink, and cultivating a kinder self-talk. I've not drunk alcohol myself for four or five years now and I can honestly say there's not a moment when I miss it. But like Andy, I'm not here to judge anyone else, simply to encourage you to try out the benefits we've both felt. Andy is motivated, passionate and full of positivity, and someone who describes a life without alcohol, as a gift to yourself. He has managed to transform his own health, happiness and relationships and wants to inspire you to do the same.Support the podcast and enjoy Ad-Free episodes. Through the years, I've maintained transparency about my journey with alcoholism—a label I've embraced in the solitude of self-discovery. However, this characterization doesn't resonate with most individuals. The majority of drinkers engage in a marginally excessive indulgence in alcohol. While this behavior may not be catastrophic in the traditional sense, it does raise discernible concerns. The persistent hangovers, lethargy, and resulting melancholy it begets become tiresome. The desire to desist is tangible, but the seamless integration of alcohol into social and professional settings renders the prospect of abstention seemingly insurmountable. Today's guest found himself ensnared within precisely this behavior pattern. Ruari Fairbairns is a former oil broker from London who—after a falling out with booze—decided it was time to put the plug in the jug. The benefits were so profound that he later walked away from his career in finance to become a full-time advocate for an alcohol-free lifestyle. Ruari, alongside collaborator Andy Ramage (featured in episode 444 in 2019), co-founded a pioneering institution, One Year No Beer, in 2015, a subscription-based bastion of sobriety with over 100,000 global members. Beyond his role as co-founder, Fairbairns co-authored the UK bestseller The 28-Day Alcohol-Free Challenge. He also co-hosts the One Year No Beer Podcast, guiding listeners on a journey of wisdom and sobriety. In this episode, we delve into the gradual transformation of society's relationship with alcohol, dissecting the negative repercussions on both mind and body. We explore the need for heightened awareness around alcohol, challenging the traditional narrative and embracing a healthier relationship with it. Ruari guides us through compelling discussions on stress, trauma, ADHD, emotional sobriety, and the pivotal role of community in the transformative journey. As we welcome the New Year and the possibilities it presents, I offer this conversation as an encouragement to consider the many ways in which alcohol continues to interfere with your health, hopes, and dreams. Help me make an Alcohol-free documentary! Here is the GoFundMe link - https://gofund.me/02540b1bClick on this link and anything you can give will make a massive difference! If you are in a position to donate £100 or over, the more the better, you will get a credit at the end of the film!!!Equally any amount will help so much and you will get a link to watch the movie for free when it is digitally released. How cool will that be - to see your name up in lights!Knowing that you were part of a documentary that will hopefully improve so many people's lives! Here is the GoFundMe link again just in case you missed it - https://gofund.me/02540b1bWhat the film is about:Why is it so hard to take a break? The film explores the power, influence and interference of the multi-trillion dollar alcohol industry in our daily lives. Our documentary follows my journey as I dive into the benefits of taking a break from alcohol, meeting key experts in health, the alcohol-free spaces and communities around the globe. I'll also uncover how misinformation and clever marketing have slowly duped us into a culture that can't seem to exist without a drink.  We will look into our government's role in the alcohol mess, whilst uncovering stories and coverups that will SHOCK you! Most importantly, we'll invite important voices to the table and reveal how we can collectively make a difference to fuel the momentum of the alcohol-free movement to change the world! This documentary will hopefully inspire millions watching to take a break and experience the life transformational benefits.Community & Audience:Our aim is to raise the awareness of the middle-lane drinker so they can see the negative impact those few drinks are having on their health, relationships and happiness. How the film started: Over a year ago, our Director Jon Hyatt watched my TEDx talk ‘The Limitless Pill' whilst filming his latest documentary about health, and wondered why many of the experts he interviewed never mentioned alcohol? The plan was for me to be the alcohol-free expert in this documentary, but the more we spoke it became clear that there was a need for a documentary specifically for alcohol-free. Once Jon finished filming, he suggested we tell the story through my eyes and flew from Canada to the UK to film some early interviews in London and the alcohol-free documentary adventure began! Why I am making this film:2024 marks my 10th anniversary, alcohol-free, and I feel better than ever. This documentary is for the hundreds of millions of middle-lane drinkers, which is about 70% of the adult population of the Western world. I was one of them. When I first coined the term “middle lane” on the Rich Roll podcast, people understood and after millions of views and downloads later, this episode has inspired so many people. So I realised now is the time. It's been a rough time for everyone, especially during COVID. Alcohol consumption was a major contributor, and we're left with the worst hangover ever. People are fatigued, depressed and suffering from poor mental and physical health. With the recent emergence of zero-proof industries, dry trends, I've noticed a huge uptick in folks taking long breaks from alcohol, seeking help, guidance and community. Our aim is to raise the awareness of the middle-lane drinker so they can see the negative impact those few drinks are having on their health, relationships and happiness.Equally, we want to sing from the rooftops about the incredible advantages you experience when you take a break. We want to celebrate the alcohol-free communities, influencers and alcohol-free drinks industry that is propelling the alcohol-free movement. And finally, we want to champion you!We want to showcase the incredible rise of alcohol-free heroes who are courageous enough to take a break and enjoy life on the fun side of the island. And It's a movement I've championed for ten years and truly it is my life's work. What we will do with your donation:Your donation will form the most important part of our documentary road map. While our producers are pitching the project to distributors, in the interim, there are many important and exciting events that we need to capture on film that cannot wait and are crucial to the story. Your donation will contribute to production and filming, securing access to important guests and locations. Your donations will fund the early stages of the documentary, and this kickstart is vitally important! Here is what you get along with our eternal gratitude:You get to say you were part of the documentary that has the power to change the world! You get to share the joys of alcohol-free and potentially make the world a better, healthier place. We will also be sent a link to watch the documentary for free once we do a digital release. This link will be provided via email notification once the documentary is launched. You will also get regular updates via email on the behind the scenes progress.I will take you with me on this journey every step of the way, from the first interview to the red carpet. And I am sure a few of you will get to join me at the premier event! Are you ready? Let's change the world together.CheersAndy & the team!*************************************************OUR TEAM:Host - Andy Ramage, author, speaker, coach. Andy was given the title of “the Godfather of the Alcohol-Free movement” by the Happy Pear twins Stephen and David. Welcome to The Love Show! The purpose of this episode is to ramp up your self love game and help raise your vibration through happiness and joy. We are entering an exciting new cycle of expansion and it's time to step up and claim the love and happiness that is there waiting for you. It's a time for mindful gratitude, personal growth and owning your power. So what are you waiting for? Let's do it together and manifest more days of joy! My favorite way to do this by starting the day in the high vibration of "YES." Yes to love, yes to happiness, yes to feeling inspired, yes to abundance, yes to joy, yes to my desires becoming my reality.... What are you a "yes" to? Take a moment now and start your own 'Yes" rampage by saying or writing down the first things that come to mind that make you feel good. Another favorite trick for starting the day off right is a gratitude visualization. Simply close your eyes, focus on a few loop deep breaths and then visualize 3 things in your life that bring you joy or that you are grateful for. This works great at night as well to help set you up for a peaceful night's sleep. The energy you go to bed with effects the energy you wake up with, so training your mind to focus on what feels good is a simple way to improve your entire vibrational field. I won't include everything in the show because I want you to listen! I promise you, it will feel good to hear it for your self. As a bonus, I have included the full Self Love episode from Season 2 for even more good juju. Bonus Link Below to Episode 22: learn tips and tools to help you boost your self love game even more and learn how to let go of self judgement! We should wake up feeling inspired and the best way to do that is through self love. Our #1 priority in life is having a positive relationship with ourself. But how do we do that? How do you find self love and why are we not taught this as children? Fear not, this episode contains all you need to get started. Stepping up your self love game will help you feel happier, optimistic and be a better person. So listen away and get ready to feel the love flow in. *I also include my live Moth Story! In this episode we replay a previous episode which featured Andy Ramage and which was broadcast originally as episode 46. Andy is an author, a performance coach, an entrepreneur, a keynote speaker (including having done a TEDx talk), and a co-founder of the One Year No Beer movement. He is an ex-professional footballer, an ex-oil broker, has studied mindfulness and neurolinguistic programming, and has a MSc in positive psychology and coaching psychology. Andy’s latest book “Let’s Do This: How to use motivational psychology to change your habits and change your life” came out 4 days ago. It’s a motivation playbook for any type of personal change, from losing 10kg to stepping up in your career to running a half-marathon. It’s full of positivity, and explains the different types of motivation and the tools you need both to make a change and to make it last. This interview was recorded in early 2018. It covers Andy’s story of living in a work culture where alcohol was prominent, how he realised this had become a problem, what he did about it, the social pressures he suffered from as he tried not drinking, the initial failures he had in going alcohol-free, the immense benefits an extended alcohol-free period gave him, how mindfulness and plant-based eating have also helped him, and what he is now doing to inspire others to try and take an alcohol-free challenge. This is not a conversation to necessarily make you give up alcohol completely. This is not a conversation focused on people who might be considered alcoholics. This is a conversation for people who Andy describes as middle-lane drinkers who may not even identify as a serious or unhealthy alcohol consumer. This is also a conversation to raise your awareness of the relationship you might have developed with alcohol without labelling or stigmatising you. At a time of the year people are usually making New Year’s resolutions, this might just be the kicker you need to try an alcohol-free challenge, especially as Andy well describes the social pressures we all face as we choose behaviours that make us stand out from the culture around us. Andy understands how to invite people to change their behaviour without ever telling them they are a bad person for what they are currently doing. It’s not negative, it’s all about the positive. I invite you to listen to this replay episode with Andy Ramage.   Live well, feel well, do well.   Andrew Davies   --------------------   About the New Normal Project podcast: The podcast is aimed to inspire and empower you to live your most plant-based, body-moving and mind-focused lifestyle, by hearing scientific evidence, experience-based information and real-life stories in the areas of the healthy lifestyle pillars such as nutrition, exercise, mindfulness, sleep, connection and purpose. It’s why we brought back Andy Ramage, who started One Year No Beer, had appeared on the Rich Roll show, and now has written a book Let’s Do This which will help you understand what you need to get or stay motivated. Fun teaser: it’s a really simple thing that everyone can do every day. But you have to be willing to show up. About Andy Ramage: Andy is a former professional athlete. After injury cut short his career, he went on to create two multimillion-dollar city brokerages.   After achieving traditional “success” Andy was left unfit, unhealthy, overweight, stressed and unhappy. He believed there had to be another way to win big in the city while staying super fit, healthy, maintaining a happy home life and doing it with a smile on his face. So he set out on a quest to study peak performance and well-being. As part of this process, Andy took a break from alcohol. It was this experience that helped him unlock the behavioral change code and revitalize his business and life. Inspired, Andy co-founded with Ruari Fairbairns a world-leading behavioral change platform OneYearNoBeer.com (OYNB) which is a 28, 90 or 365-day alcohol-free challenge. OYNB has inspired over 70,000 people to transform their relationship with alcohol and power up their life. ‘Be the change telling people to change doesn’t work, you have to lead and be the change’ This is the second part of Gavin’s in-depth interview with Ruari Fairbairns Co-Founder of One Year No Beer. Ruari has been on a fascinating journey from hugely successful and highly regarded oil broker with a lack of fulfilment to, along with his partner Andy Ramage, creating and leading the movement ‘One Year No Beer’ he has along the way changed his life and relationship with alcohol completely. Gavin and Ruari talk about the business lessons learnt along the way, the importance of meditation, spirituality and meeting the Dalai Lama in this absorbing podcast.   KEY TAKEAWAYS What’s next Our next step is to unlock our ambassador model. Our events will be at park runs, sober raves and festivals they will be upbeat and full of life you will be connecting with people who are full of life having a great time without the use of a poisonous drug. The ambassador model gives our members the opportunity to create a lifestyle business championing this movement. This can be done either online or offline. When you go against society and change your relationship with something incredibly ingrained in society you build self-worth and this creates a platform for you to be better across all areas of your life. Everything began with 10 minutes of headspace every day, practising meditation every day changes everything. Key business lessons learnt along the way -       Create a plan before you execute. -       Getting support people and the operational systems and management in place is transformational. -       Build a supportive team around you, so you can focus on what you are good at -       Communicate with your customers about the opportunities and limitations you have Many members want to support and give back. They really understand and bring passion because they have been through the program -       Be very careful whenever you are sourcing marketing there are way more ways to waste your money than spend it well. -       Be the change telling people to change doesn’t work, you have to lead and be the change. Alcohol is an access point to drive personal development and a shift to more healthy habits and foster better well-being and happiness. We build technology that facilitates connection through behaviour change and are driven by the purpose of changing people’s lives Our mission is to empower our members to change the world’s relationship with alcohol. This movement is happening organically, it’s moving through me and when it’s done with me it will continue on. I’m the nuclear fire engine that drives this thing on day to day using my passion, ADHD and energy but it will get much bigger than just me.   BEST MOMENTS ‘We have the consumer part with incredible feedback but the big change comes through our corporate programs’  ‘We are doing business for good’ ‘In ‘One year no beer’ there is a lot of serendipity and that  is the higher purpose of what we are trying to achieve a connected society over a common purpose of living a good life we are onto something really big’   VALUABLE RESOURCES The Business Mastermind Podcast The 28 Day Alcohol-Free Challenge book by Andy Ramage and Ruari Fairbairns Ruari Fairbairns LinkedIn OYNB One Year No Beer website Ruari Fairbairns YouTube      ABOUT THE HOST Gavin Preston Gavin is an inspirational Speaker, Business Strategist, Business Growth Mentor, Trainer and high-performance Coach.  He works with Business Owners and Entrepreneurs and has a strong track record in creating creative strategies to accelerate the growth of their business. ‘One Year No Beer created a global tribe and facilitated the connection with people who are on the same journey and that’s why it’s so transformational. In this fascinating and in-depth interview Gavin is speaking with Ruari Fairbairns Co-Founder of One Year No Beer. They discuss Ruari’s journey and how he chose health over success which ultimately led him to found One Year No Beer with his business partner Andy. This is a podcast that explores the ways we connect with each other and the global tribe that Ruari has created to facilitate the connections between people on the same journey, and there is something for everyone in this inspirational interview   KEY TAKEAWAYS I chose health over being successful and I think there are many people out there who are scared of making the choice but the reality when I took a break for 90 days was I got much faster, more focused and sharper when working. One Year No Beer was born from the experiences of myself and my business partner and in the first year we gave away all our content. It’s about an exponential difference over a single choice - do you want to drink yes or no? The choice over alcohol isn’t just tiny it’s a polar opposite and that’s why you see a massive transformation. This is not just ‘don’t drink’ we have created a program that helps you change your relationship with alcohol. We knew when we started it had to be completely different. We wanted to keep growing and we started the ball rolling with crowdfunding We then looked for seed investors and were able to raise 1.1 million in 5 weeks There has been phenomenal growth in a very short amount of time. We have a big job to do and we have an incredible team pulling out all the stops. We are all programmed and conditioned through society, peer pressure and social conditioning that alcohol is a positive thing in society. At the core of what we’ve created is a behaviour change platform to help people change their relationship with alcohol surrounded by a peer network. You will connect with people having a great time without needing a poison or a drug. The ambassador model gives our members the opportunity to create a lifestyle business championing this movement. It’s not about alcohol, it’s about getting people to focus on their personal development. We’ve got a massive opportunity to make a real impact on the world. There are 3 main factors in addictive behaviour Meaning and purpose – there was none as an oil broker but now I could not get more connected. Environment – I was born on an island but was in a place where I couldn’t get to the sea. If you are feeling disconnected from your environment then find small ways to reconnect. Connection – true connection is when we spend time with loved ones and spending time connecting with other human beings. One year no beer created a global tribe and facilitated the connection with people who are on the same journey and that why it’s so transformational. The higher purpose we are trying to achieve is a connected society.   BEST MOMENTS ‘I felt so much happier and it was transformational’ ‘I have to have noise and distraction; the ADHD brain needs to have chaos in order to find focus’ ‘Marketing is about getting someone to see the end result so they can value the piece at the beginning’   VALUABLE RESOURCES The Business Mastermind Podcast The 28 Day Alcohol-Free Challenge book by Andy Ramage and Ruari Fairbairns Ruari Fairbairns LinkedIn OYNB One Year No Beer website Ruari Fairbairns YouTube      ABOUT THE HOST Gavin Preston Gavin is an inspirational Speaker, Business Strategist, Business Growth Mentor, Trainer and high-performance Coach.  He works with Business Owners and Entrepreneurs and has a strong track record in creating creative strategies to accelerate the growth of their business. I am beyond thrilled to have this guest on the Euphoric podcast. Not only is Andy Ramage my hero, he was one of the key people who shifted how I viewed alcohol and allowed me to see how limitless life can be without it. Andy is the co-founder of One Year No Beer, a global movement to transform people’s relationships with alcohol by taking a break from drinking and discovering how incredible life is without it. Andy takes things to the next level and optimizes his life for peak performance. He proves that quitting alcohol can make you healthier, happier, more motivated and productive and let’s you go for all your dreams (seems like we have a similar goal). Case in point, he’s written two books, one called the 28 Day Alcohol-Free Challenge and another one on motivation coming soon, gotten a Master’s degree in positive psychology, started a business that has helped over 25,000 people, and is actively challenging the status quo that we have to drink to fit in on TV, popular podcasts and TEDx. Tune in to our conversation to learn more about his story, how he became an expert on behavioral change, what his morning routine looks like, and the top books to read to change your life. According to Andy, the single best thing you could do to improve your life? Quit drinking alcohol. “Quitting alcohol isn't just for alcoholics.”Andy RamageOver the years, I have openly shared my personal journey with alcoholism and that of many guests. A lifeline for the desperate many that struggle in silence, I do this to underscore that there is always hope, no matter how far down you find yourself. But what if you’re not an alcoholic? What if you, like millions of people, occasionally drink just a little too much? Even though it doesn't destroy your life, it leaves you feeling off. You're tired of the hangovers, the lethargy and the low grade depression it provokes. You'd prefer to stop. But because drinking is integral to your social or professional life, opting out seems impossible. What then? This week's guest faced this very predicament, a relatable scenario for a vast number of people. The only difference? Andy Ramage decided to do something about it.A former professional footballer (as they say in the UK), a career-ending injury prompted Andy to hang up the cleats and enter the world of finance. Channeling his work ethic, it didn't take long for him to become successful in the traditional sense, co-creating two multimillion-dollar city brokerages. But doing well in banking ‘required' (or so he thought) drinking. Lots of drinking. Long Mad Men style booze-soaked client lunches. Countless happy hours, pub crawls, and cocktail soirées, followed by clubbing and the occasional after party. It's just what you gotta do to play the game.Andy didn’t necessarily have a drinking ‘problem’. But the lifestyle left him drained. Listless. And looking for a change.Bucking the unwritten rules of his professional environment, he decided to to take a break from alcohol and embarked instead on a quest for peak performance and well-being. It stuck. Not only did Andy feel markedly better, his work performance improved. His relationships became more meaningful. He fell back in love with the simple things that brought him joy as a young lad. Slowly, a new world of life opportunities began to emerge.Transformed, Andy enthusiastically began sharing his experience, challenging friends and colleagues to quit the booze for 28, 90 or even 365-days. What he didn't know was that the friendly contest he concocted among peers would soon explode into a full-blown international movement he ultimately dubbed One Year No Beer.Today, Andy and his friend Ruari Fairbairns have birthed OYNB into a world-leading behavioral change platform offering instruction and support for a variety of alcohol free challenges. Their companion book, The 28-Day Alcohol-Free Challenge* is a UK bestseller (now available in the U.S.*). To date, their endeavors have inspired over 50,000 people to boot the bottle and invest instead in well-being.I first met Andy two years ago when he turned up for our Plantpower Ireland retreat. Fast friends from the outset, I've wanted to share his story ever since.Alcoholism is a self-diagnosed disease. Left untreated, it will progress, ultimately leading you to one of three places: jail, institutions, or death. So if you are a true alcoholic, or a sober member of a certain unnamed 12-step program, Andy's message isn't necessarily aimed at you. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Have you ever considered an alcohol-free challenge? Are you worried you might be drinking too much? Do you need help with your drinking?   If any of these questions resonate with you, this podcast is one you may learn something from. Andy Ramage, a passionate ex-professional footballer who is now an equally passionate oil broker in London, UK, is this week’s guest. In 2015 Andy co-founded the global lifestyle phenomenon OneYearNoBeer.com, a 28, 90 or a 365-day alcohol-free challenge to help transform people's relationship with alcohol. His first best-selling book The 28-day Alcohol-free Challenge, co-authored with his colleague Ruari Fairbairns, was released in December 2017. Andy is one of the world’s leading behavioural change & performance coaches. He works with CEOs, business professionals, athletes, entrepreneurs, actors and influencers to transform their relationship with alcohol to improve their health, their careers and their day to day lives. Andy is working towards a Masters degree in positive psychology and coaching psychology, is a Master Practitioner of Neuro-Linguistic Programming, a mindfulness based awareness coach, a much sought-after speaker, and with Ruari, he has a popular podcast called the One Year No Beer podcast. In this episode, Andy tells his story of how he ended up in a work culture where alcohol was prominent, how he realised this had become a problem and what he did about it, his initial failures going alcohol-free mainly because of the social pressure he felt, how an extended alcohol-free period ended up being successful, and what he is now doing to inspire others to take and benefit from an alcohol-free challenge. In the conversation, Andy also speaks on: How he didn’t ever identify with being an alcoholic The failed alcohol-free attempts which made him stronger His realisation that apart from Alcoholics Anonymous there was not much to help people with their drinking behaviour Using non-alcoholic beer to help him What the One Year No Beer movement and community is all about His 28 day Alcohol-Free Challenge book What happens after most people try an alcohol-free challenge The benefits of getting up early without a hangover How to deal with partners with drinking behaviours His change to plant-based eating and how that has helped him How mindfulness has helped him, especially Loving Kindness meditation He hopes to write more books, do more speaking, write blogs and lead courses His passion for football and how that led to a professional football career How much better a footballer he might have been with his present lifestyle The disconnect between what professional footballers drink and what the supporters think they drink The need for more public figures being known to be alcohol free This is not a conversation to necessarily make you give up alcohol completely. This is not a conversation focused on people who might be considered alcoholics. This is a conversation for people who drink even small amounts of alcohol. This is a conversation to raise your awareness of the relationship you might have developed with alcohol without labelling or stigmatising you. At a time of the year people are often making New Year’s resolutions, this might just be the kicker to try an alcohol-free challenge, especially as Andy well describes the social pressures we all face as we choose behaviours that make us different to the culture all around us. Andy understands how to invite people to change their behaviour without ever telling them they are a bad person for what they are currently doing. It’s not negative, it’s all about the positive. If you have been thinking about reducing your drinking, I hope this will be helpful.   Live well, feel well, do well.   Andrew Davies     PS. Claire is taking a break from hosting the show so I invite you to stick with me on a search to improve your health and happiness. My father’s recent death with cancer has reinvigorated my passion to help as many people as possible to live the healthiest lives possible to give us the best chance of a longer and disease-free life. The podcast will continue to focus on the pillars of a healthy lifestyle such as eating more plants, becoming more mindful, moving our bodies more, improving our sleep, developing healthier connections and refining our sense of purpose. I’d really appreciate your help in supporting the show by posting on social media, rating or reviewing the show, or simply by telling one person you think would enjoy listening. Today’s podcast was recorded on World Book Day, and we want to take a moment to remind listeners about our book, The 28 Day Alcohol-Free Challenge, which you can find on bookstore shelves and online. The book is one way that we’re helping others change their relationship with alcohol. And we’re not the only ones working to help offer options to people who want to go alcohol-free or change the way we use alcohol. Today’s guest, Lee Davy, is the founder of the site The Truth About Alcohol and the host of the Alcohol and Addiction podcast.  Lee quit drinking in an effort to save a struggling marriage. He says that in his case, alcohol was masking deeper problems in the marriage, and the marriage ended anyway. After that, Lee decided to make massive changes in his life. He changed his career, got out of debt, traveled the world, got remarried, and transformed his whole life, right down to cutting off contact with old friends and giving away possessions. Lee realized that what he wanted to do with his life was to help people quit alcohol. That’s what led to the creation of his website.  “It’s like your entire life has been down to a set of decisions you made when you really didn’t have a clue what you were doing.”  Lee says that he felt that he was tricked into believing that alcohol had value, and he felt compelled to save others from experiencing the same things that he did. He compares alcohol use to a prison with the doors open – he could walk in and out, but others believed that the door was closed and wouldn’t try to leave.  Lee decided to become a professional poker player. He set a goal to earn a certain amount of money, and if he hit the goal, he would quit his job and use the money to help other people quit alcohol. This led to writing gigs about his experience. He created The Truth About Alcohol as a side gig while becoming one of the top poker writers in the world. Tune in to the episode to hear more about Lee’s story and how changing your relationship with alcohol can have unexpected positive impacts on your life.  LINKS & RESOURCES:  OYNB Website: https://www.oneyearnobeer.com/  OYNB Facebook Page: https://www.facebook.com/Oneyearnobeer/  OYNB Facebook Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/199505820380513/  OYNB Twitter: https://twitter.com/oynbuk/  OYNB Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/oneyearnobeer/  LEE DAVY’S RESOURCES:  The Truth About Alcohol: https://www.thetruthaboutalcohol.co.uk/ Lee’s Email: TheTruthAboutAlcohol@gmail.com  The Truth About Alcohol Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/thetruthaboutalcohol/

Swearing? Biting your nails? Smoking? Spending too much time on your phone? Gillian Russell delves into our bad habits and asks just how much our health and happiness might improve if we knocked them on the head? Author and expert on the power of the mind Dr David Hamilton explains what exactly habits are, why we form them in the first place, what's going on in the brain when we indulge a habit and why bad habits are always harder to kick. Ruari Fairbairns, author of The 28 Day Alcohol-Free Challenge, returns to find out how Gillian and guest Suzanne Lockhart got on with their quest to quit booze for four weeks. Have they actually completed it and did they feel any better? What did they learn about themselves and their drinking habits? If a habit gets more serious and starts to take over your life ... whether that's sugar, shopping or social media ... what would you do to break the cycle? Jo De Rosa has been there herself and through her own experiences, she's now developed Quantum Sobriety ... a novel approach to challenging what you're addicted to.

Forget new year's resolutions! Throughout January, Gillian Russell and the Personal Best team are focusing on trying new things and filling our lives with more of what's good for us so we can squeeze out some of the bad habits... Could four weeks off alcohol alter your relationship with it? Ruari Fairbairn, co-author of The 28-Day Alcohol-Free Challenge, describes why he decided to give up booze and the impact it's had on his health and happiness since then. How can we approach giving up something we like in a positive way and is it possible to do so without becoming pious - or boring?! "You are what you eat" ... you've probably heard that expression dozens of times but how much attention do you really pay to it? According to Suzanne Lockhart, author of Mad Diet, the reason so many of us are depressed or struggling to lose weight is down to the food we put in our mouths ... but by changing our approach to what we eat, she says we can improve both our waistlines and our mental health.

After nearly a year since the last time we recorded, we’re bringing the podcast back to life. Between jobs, businesses, blogs, and other factors, the podcast proved to be too much, so we ended it. However, in response to overwhelming demand, we’re bringing it back now that we’re both full time at One Year No Beer. We have a lot of amazing updates to share. We’re broadcasting on YouTube now, as well as on the podcast. We’re going on BBC live to talk about the launch of our book, The 28 Day Alcohol‑Free Challenge. We have a series coming up in the Sunday Times that will feature sections from the book. And we have a lot of great guests and plans for the podcast as well. “This year, with your help, we’re going to impact one million people in 2018.” In this episode, we talk about how, when you change your relationship with alcohol, you impact the people around you as well. Ruari says that almost all of his family and friends have been impacted and that his father-in-law was drinking non-alcoholic beer this Christmas. We know that you’ll have an impact on the people around you as well. We believe that if we can reach 100,000 members, we’ll impact over one million people. We also talk about some of the top tips that you can use going into Dry January. Andy recommends making sure that you have a plan for going out. You should know what you’re going to drink and have a backup plan in case that isn’t available. Ruari’s top tip is mindfulness. It’s important to remember that mindfulness is a skill that you have to learn and that it requires regular practice. A third tip is to find some alcohol-free alternatives that work for you. And remember that you don’t have to do it alone. The One Year No Beer community is there to help.
