POPULARITY
This chapter begins to highlight the optimism of the Coalition approaching the Battle of Austerlitz. We also experience a rare crossing of the major characters, Nicholas and Andrei. While Nicholas was riding with the Pavlograd Hussars, Boris was serving more comfortably with the Imperial Guard, accompanying Czar Alexander as he traveled toward Olmütz, Moravia, a mostly German speaking enclave of the Holy Roman Empire that sits along a tributary of the Danube River. The allies were uniting in their largest numbers with plans to square off against Napoleon's Grande Armée. Kutúzov's forces already reached Olmütz while the Guards were stationed 10 miles away. All units were preparing to be reviewed by Emperors Alexander and Francis II. Nicholas receives a note from Boris, informing him that Boris arrived with the letter and money from his family. Nicholas was elated as he was dire need of funds and set off at once to find his childhood friend. Rostov's unit was no longer on the run, so his camp swarmed with sutlers (civilian merchants). The Hussars held feast after feast, celebrating and receiving honors. Nicholas attained a promotion to cornet, a relatively low officer's rank. He also had to buy Denisov's horse, “Bedouin,” after his trusty “Rook” fell in battle. With such expenses, he was in serious debt. Nicolas is over asking himself – Why am I Here? The morale of his unit infused him with a proud spirit, as he never obtained any personal glory. Nevertheless, he proudly dons his crumpled hussar cap and shabby cadet jacket. He wishes to appear more seasoned than anyone he will come across. Commanded by Grand Duke Konstantin Pavlovich, the Imperial Guards made their march west as if on a pleasure trip, with knapsacks on carts and the finest of provisions from Austria. While supplies to Russia's fighting regiments was notoriously poor, the Austrian authorities made sure the Imperial Guard and Emperor were well taken care of. Everywhere they stopped, bands and fanfare welcomed them and a grand ball was organized. Boris had marched along and been quartered with Berg, who was promoted to Captain, mostly for competently arranging financial matters. Berg was rising in accord with his ambition. Boris also had his eyes on advancement, making acquaintance of many of influence. He received a letter of recommendation from Pierre and become acquainted with Andrei, through whom he hoped to gain a post on Kutuzov's staff. Nicholas finds Boris & Berg sitting, clean and neatly dressed, at a table in tidy quarters, playing chess. Nicholas enthusiastically greats them and imitates their old Nurse's mangled French, saying “Petisenfans, allay cushay dormir!” Meaning, Oh children, go to sleep. All can immediately spot how much each has changed. They had not met for half a year and each young man had taken such important steps along life's Road. Boris rose to meet his old friend and Nicholas initially resisted because he wanted to roughhouse with Boris. Still, Boris acted in accord with etiquette , embracing Nicholas and kissing him three times. They then boisterously exchanged greetings and took notice of the attractive German land-lady. Nicholas points out how both his friend had become dandies. Soon they ordered wine. Boris soon asks Nicholas about his experiences and if he has been under fire. Without speaking, Nicholas smiled and shook the cross of St. George fastened to his uniform and showcased his bandaged arm. The background of this award is significant as St. George (of Cappadocian Greek origin) was a 4th Century Roman Soldier who converted to Christianity and was martyred when he would not recant his faith. There is also a legend he slayed a dragon when a lovely princess was going to be sacrificed to the beast. Paintings and awards often depict his symbolic victory over evil. The figure and tale holds immense significance in Russian history.

On this show, we'll talk about the episode called Lord! Why am I Here? (Seeking God's Will for Your Life) Sunday February 4, 2024, 8pm CST (516)453-9118, www.blogtalkradio.com/reconnectmyheart
When we wake up each morning, do we actually think that what we do can change someone's world in some way? Most of us are grateful to change the sheets on a regular basis, clean the coffee pot with vinegar a few times a year, and water the plants when they show signs of an early death. Yet, as followers of Jesus, we are not only called to an eternal purpose, to love God and our neighbor, we also get the privilege of partnering with the Son of God to change lives—one life, perhaps—all for His glory and our good and theirs. Does that sound too hard? Too overwhelming? Too exhausting? It can to me, until I remember how Jesus spoke to many individuals, not only crowds of 5,000 and more. And He met needs one-on-one, as well as breaking bread and fish for hungry men and women and their kids on a mountain more than once. Think about it: I've learned that inviting one person for a cup of coffee can change their world. God loves people, and He wants to use our tables and teapots to show people that He does. Your cup of coffee or tea, soup or water—can be an introduction to God that someone has been looking for their whole lives. As my new sweatshirt reads, "My real home is heaven. I'm just here recruiting." (I don't usually wear that on a first time meet-up.) Awhile ago I shared three stories of how God changed lives through a simple invitation. Here are three more stories of how God changed lives through a simple invitation. An invitation to the one who needs a family An invitation to the one who needs to live awake An invitation to the one who needs a little help Maybe you've been the recipient of an invitation that changed your life. I'd love to hear about it. I'd also like to hear if you invite someone over and would like me to pray alongside. Email me: sue@welcomeheart.com. We're partners, after all. To hear my first three invitations that changed the world, LISTEN to Part, I - HERE.

A great interview with Nick who's grown a tremendous amount since being in the program. A father of 4 kids with a busy professional life to attend to and a wife to keep happy, things are NOT always easy for Nick BUT he's made it happen. This is an amazing interview I had with my man Eitel, who's gotten absolutely RIPPED. Coming up on 46 years young... Married with 3 kiddos. Is a very BUSY but DRIVEN and highly SUCCESSFUL professional. Used to run off of 6 cups of coffee, sometimes MORE... Would hit 5-6 90 minute training sessions / week, sometimes with extra cardio... Was eating a super low carb diet with intermittent fasting... Had "brain fog" daily and …couldn't focus clearly. Body was banged up and sustained multiple injuries from shoulder pain, low back pain, and extremely tight hamstrings. And was just bound up like a ball and felt like ticking time bomb. When you look at his before and after, what you don't see is the PROCESS it's taken to get to this point. I could lie and say my man got shredded in 6-12 weeks (like most "coaches" do) but Eitel's journey is a bit different. He was BURNED OUT! Had I put him on a "diet" when I first started working with him we probably wouldn't be working together any longer. We had to BUILD UP before we earned the right to SHRED DOWN. Sadly, most guys don't want to hear this and they want QUICK RESULTS yesterday but... TRUTH IS, for most of the dads I work with, I'd say 8/10 of them are NOT READY to "SHRED" or actually lose weight. WHY?? They too are BURNED OUT. From… chronically UNDER eating chronically eating junk (when they DO eat) training too much with too much intensity doing random workouts not following an actual PLAN running off of energy drinks and coffee daily getting 6 hours or LESS of sleep nightly Just STRESSED TO THE MAX. It might seem ass-backwards when I say you need to go EASIER before you go HARDER but it's what works. If you're in a similar spot as my man Eitel was in, take a look at your current lifestyle. Where do you need to make some changes and what do you need to FIX? The answer isn't always to "GO HARDER”. TRUST me… we'll get to that point (Eitel told me he's never been STRONGER or FITTER than he is NOW) While one of the slogans I've adopted and have lived by since the beginning has been “GO 110% HAM”, you gotta also be SMART about how you GO 110% HAM. Pressuring yourself to keep changing, perhaps? We are extremely proud of our Year 6 student Harriet who was a runner-up in this year's FOBISIA Short Story Competition. She was alone. Trudging through thick snow, each step she took she could hear the crunching of snowflakes beneath her ice cold feet. Her breath was a wispy white smoke, the kind you would imagine a dragon to breath. The branches of the trees around her were twisted, climbing high above the ground, the roots firmly anchored, spreading across the ground like a spider's web. An ear splitting bang grabbed her attention. She felt afraid but her curiosity got the better of her and she ran towards it. A tree lay dead and snapped in half, she climbed over the slowly rotting, splintered wood that lay scattered on the ground. She reached a clearing in the forest with a strangely engraved stone arch in the centre. “Protect yourself before it gets you” she read aloud. “What does that mean? Before it gets you? Before what gets you?” She mumbled to herself. A strong gust of wind hit her. She started to frantically look around “ before what gets me?” she screamed. This time she got a reply. A cold, raspy voice whispered in her ear, “me”. The blood drained from her face. She ran. Faster than she’d ever run before, then she tripped. The voice let out a laugh “look around you, look at what you just tripped over!” She looked down at the frozen body of a boy. He blinked and mouthed the words ‘help’. She screamed as she saw hundreds of other frozen bodies strewn across the ground. “Who are you?” she shrieked. The voice replied “I've been watching you, in fact I brought you here. Did you find those trees luring you in? And that bang, did that make you want to investigate?” she paused for a while. “ Yes” she replied, “but that stone, why didn't you freeze whoever wrote that?” “That is the last time someone was able to finish my little game. You see the date on there? That's right, 1824. If you can win my game, you will set all these people free, if you lose you are stuck here.” His laugh made the hairs on her neck stand on end. “I'll play.” “ The game is What am I? Here are the clues but listen carefully, I will not repeat. I am light in color but dark inside, I'm ice cold, a million years old, the forest is where I lie. You have exactly two minutes to answer” “Dark in my soul, light in colour, a million years old…” Sarah trailed off. She frantically tried to patch together the clues. Sarah could feel panic rising within her and hear her pulse, louder than ever. She could feel the foul beasts excitement growing. Then something clicked “You're a ghost!” she shouted. The voice shrieked like nothing Sarah had ever heard before. Then she saw it, a pale figure just visible. She turned her head in fear, he was young, maybe in his teens she thought, but this did nothing to diminish the terror when she looked into his face, contorted in rage. He looked like he was fighting against some bonds, perhaps bound by the rules of the game, but still trying to reach out and claw at her as he faded into the gloom. She was surrounded, lifted gently by strangers and embraced. Nearly 200 years of victims freed from their frozen state. She felt bewildered, confused but elated. She worked her way through the crowd surrounding her and set off to the safety of home, hundreds of freed souls trailing behind her. The ghost watched from the shadows, angry, furious, but he would start his collection of frozen souls again, as he had so many times before.
Why has the mystic and the natural world been intertwined with symbolic meaning and the path of awakening to a different way of perceiving life since the beginning of human experience? From the 1st of April 2020, Boyd Varty from Londolozi Game Reserve in South Africa realizes a life long dream as he goes into the wilderness alone for 40 days and 40 nights to try and answer that question from inside that experience. - Episode 7: "Solo" Journal Entry: Discovered a perfect white fluff ball of feathers. My roommate, a chinspot basis. I got to bed to roost. Living in a tree you don't look up at birds, you are eye level. African Hawk Eagles, Chinspot Batis, Tracks, Lions, Roost, Presence, Richard Siwela, Manyelethi. Why am I Here? Why have I always known I would live in a tree? Why do I track solo? Why do you know you must do that you have not rational reason to? Out here I do one thing at a time. If you are into being present, I would give it a try. I found a pride of lion in the Manyelethi. Decoded the pattern of the tracks. Some young, some old. With young cub present I must be especially aware. The tracks had no night traffic. I began to follow. There is a unique feeling to following a pride of lions alone. When tracking solo your tracking should be sufficiently good that you are not trying to track. Now you are self reliant. If you encounter danger from the lions, the outcome will be dictated by the quality of your reactions. React slowly, do not run, do not panic. Condition yourself in advance for presence. You are in a conversation that is communicated primarily with energy and body language. Stand your ground and then move backwards. The general rule is to have respect and be humble. The goal should be to see the lion before they see you. I don't know why I must follow but I want to follow. A tracker must follow as a form of self expression. On a track alone, there can be a purity of self expression. I think of my childhood hero, Richard Siwela. He was an incredible solo tracker. He was a leopard specialist. He was meticulous, judgmental and aloof by nature. He carried himself with the superiority of the superior. Today I have been beaten by the boundary but I have enjoyed my art form. The ability to let more life into my heart is surely a trail worth following. Eugene Marais - Purposeful action towards an unknown purpose. Homing towards something towards their is no… Homing instinct in young pygmy boy.

Show Notes In last week’s episode 38, I shared listener responses to the question I raised in an earlier email to our listeners about the verse from Hebrews 10:24, “Let us think of ways to motivate one another to acts of love and good works.” My question was HOW do you do this, which elicited some great responses. Another one came in just the other day from a missionary I’ll share in just a minute. But more than that, over the past few months listeners have responded to other relationship issues, and today I want to share those with you. Going back to our first episode in November 2018, I mentioned that one of the reasons to listen to this podcast is that it’s intended to be a community for people of faith interested in transforming their relationships into the best they can be. The goal is to make the podcast format interactive, where we learn from each other, and where we support and encourage one another. To that end, I find that I am encouraged in dealing with my relationships when I see how other people are doing it. I’m guessing the same is true for you, too. So, to finish off that question of HOW do we motivate one another to acts of love and good works, here’s a response from Devri, a missionary who served in Turkey with her husband Dan for 28 years, and now for the last 6 in Cyprus. Here is what she said: “Dear John, “Dan and I have been working with a group of children, at one time 15, now just 6, due to people getting married and moving on. When the children were turning up on our doorstep, we opened the door and embraced them. We taught them how to shoot bows and arrows, how to swim, and how to make pizza! “There were many times it was exhausting work, but each time they came we taught them something more about living life in the light of God. For example, when two children were being especially mean to each other, I took them into my room. I asked them if they would be saying the things they were saying if they saw the father of the person they were being mean to. Both said an emphatic "NO!" “From there it was easy to transition to the truth that whatever they said was in front of the One who made the person they were criticizing. He made them, loved them, and did not enjoy seeing them spoken to so poorly. When the two left the room they were quiet. “As we returned to the crowd of other children the brother of one of the children said, "Don't worry, we have it all planned. We will have a group at school beat him up on Monday." The girl's response to her brother was, "It has been dealt with." “Years have passed from that day. The last day I saw that girl she said to me, "Don't worry, I remember the lessons you taught us: Give thanks in all things; it is better to give than to receive; forgiveness frees the one who forgives, and Jesus is our Shepherd.” This meant so much to me. “These words were spoken by a girl who had been raped by her father. She was in a safe house and planning to leave it as soon as she turned 18. I may never see her again, but I will not regret those days I opened my home and my heart to her and all the other friends that came pouring in. “The LORD has since opened a door for me to teach these same lessons to the children in an orphanage in a nearby city. I now have 40 children to encourage to acts of love and good works! “And I am so grateful to you, John, for the words that encourage me to do better at loving those around me intentionally. Grateful, Devri” Last week the examples I shared of motivating others to love and good works were about reinforcing good behavior and attitudes we see in people. Devri’s comments today are about correcting bad behavior. There’s room for both in motivating others to love and good works. I’m struck by the level of trust that Devri and Dan developed with those kids. It started with “we opened the door and embraced them. We taught them how to shoot bows and arrows, how to swim, and how to make pizza!” What they were doing was certainly sacrificial service to those kids She gave them a reason to love and do good works in a way they could understand at their developmental stage as children. She helped them connect the dots between their relationship with their peers, and their relationship with God. She helped them see that the antagonists in their life were deeply loved by God, and that since He loved them, they should too, at the level they were capable of at that age. I was also struck by the tender response of the girl to Devri who said, "Don't worry, I remember the lessons you taught us: Give thanks in all things; it is better to give than to receive; forgiveness frees the one who forgives, and Jesus is our Shepherd.” I can easily picture Devri’s eyes welling with tears over this affirmation of the profound impact she had on this girl. What valuable lessons this girl learned from Devri. In bringing out the best in this girl, Devri brought out the best in herself. Moving on, here are two in response to episode 32 that kicked off Season Two, “What am I Here for? What is my purpose in Life? “John, thank you for the wonderful podcast. I particularly enjoyed learning about Ben Franklin and the Junto Society. It may sound silly, but it gave ME a sense of hope knowing THAT he was someone instrumental in founding the place WE Call home. He sounds like someone who’s friendship I would have liked TO have. Looking forward to further episodes!” ~ Amy Ben Franklin not feeling the love in the city of brotherly love, Philadelphia, and moving to Boston upon returning from England at the age of 21. He didn’t know a soul and started the Junto Society, or “Leather Apron Club” as it was sometime called. It is reassuring at times to think about where we have come from as a nation and the people we have produced. Here’s the 2nd response to episode 32, Hi John, Thanks so much for starting up the podcast again.. This last one was really helpful. [This is in reference to the “I” in T.H.I.S. - Initiate] One thing that I tried with both of my parents and my grandmother was listening to them and trying to to find something that we were able to connect to which eventually became our thing. It became a great blessing to me to find a common ground where we could develop a relationship of trust and fun as adults. I miss some of that as all have passed to eternity. I appreciate so much your ability to succinctly say what I am sometimes doing. It helps me label it. Thank you that you are living out what you were made for. ~ Cindy I love how Cindy initiated with people much older than she was - her parents and grandparents, and asked them questions to bond with them over something that became “our thing.” With two our grandsons here in town, “our thing” has become going to Chick-fil-A. At least for the moment. They’ll go at a drop of a hat. In a recent visit I commented to them both how much I appreciated how they often ask me questions. I encouraged them to do the same with their parents. Like Cindy, both of my parents are deceased, yet I still have questions that only they could answer. But they’re not here any more. I must confess, it gnaws at me sometime. I should have asked them more questions before it was too late. Next, here’s a text I received from Karen, a missionary, good friend, and listener to the podcast: “I have your podcast card on my counter so I see it every day. ‘At the end of the day, NOTHING MATTERS MORE than Relationships’. I get to MC our Golden Agers Day., I”m going to use that! Because I feel that group of people understand that - they’re past the days of climbing the corporate ladder, or making a name for themselves, or how big of a house they have or what kind of car they drive. For them it really comes down to relationships....well, and maybe their health!! It’s one of my favorite days of our ministry year. I can see why Karen would love being with this group, people who have nothing more to prove to anyone. Finally, here’s an email I received from Rebecca, a missionary who has been serving in Indonesia for many years. She responded to episode 20, “Relating with People Who Talk Too Much.” “I’ve listened to several of your podcasts and made a handout with the questions for dealing with people that annoy you. I’ve given it to several people including a missionary who was in our home on Sunday night. Many blessings to you as you continue to assist people in living in more healthy ways! Rebecca” From Episode 20, Rebecca complied a list of 15 questions I mentioned that a person can ask them self when they are in a relationship with a difficult person. I will post these sometimes soon on my website, but you can get all of it now on the podcast episode, number 20, “Relating with People Who Talk Too Much” Well here is my takeaway from today’s episode. What I learned today We have some really wise people listening to this podcast. People I can learn from. People very different from me. The more I hear what they are thinking and what is on their heart, the wiser I will become. And so will you. Before I close, here’s the he main take-away from today’s episode, our show in a sentence We can draw encouragement from others when we see what they are doing to transform their relationships into the best they can be. Here’s what you can do in response to today’s show You could ask God if there’s a person much younger than you that he wants you to invest yourself in. It could be a child or someone a generation or two behind you. And then do something similar to what Devri and her husband did, to build trust and then impart the wisdom you’ve acquired. You could also ask God if there’s a much older person he wants you to connect with. Like Cindy and Karen did in today’s episode. Someone from whom you could draw wisdom. Someone with a story that would encourage you. Now for our Relationship Quote of the Week From the lessons our missionary friend Devri taught children many years ago: Give thanks in all things; it is better to give than to receive; forgiveness frees the one who forgives, and Jesus is our Shepherd. Closing Thanks for listening in today to hear from your fellow listeners. I sure enjoyed it, I hope you did too. I’d love to hear from more of you as to how you are dealing with the relationships in your life. You can keep it anonymous if you want. But the main thing is we can all use a bit of encouragement these days, and that encouragement could come from you as we learn how to best reflect the character of God in our relationships. Because after all, You Were Made for This! Well, that’s all for today. See you next week. Bye for now. Everyone is asking three questions about Identity, Security & Significance: Who am I?, Where do I belong?, and Why am I Here? The reason is because God designed us to have an Identity, security, and significance. To help others find answers to these questions we need to tell two stories. Our story woven with God's. #wearetheGrove
Pastor David teaches on I Peter 2:4-10 in "Why am I Here . . . and not There?" in the Love Illuminated series. Like Abraham, we have been blessed by God to be a blessing to others and to the world around us. The PURPOSE of our whole lives, and the life we share in the body of Christ, is to be a proclamation of God's love to everyone.
