Tread Perilously starts 2022 with Total Request Live 5! Four weeks of Patreon listener requests. And it all begins with The Good Wife episode called "Goliath and David." Alicia accepts the case of a culty rock singer whose orchestration in a cover of a rap track gets used by a network show about kids at a musical band camp. The problem: the singer received no credit or residuals for the elements of the cover which were his creation and his manager failed to get the correct rights from the song's original composer. Will Will use this as a chance to get back at Alicia? Meanwhile, Archie Panjabi tries to learn who fathered Melissa George's baby. Erik once again asks the question: "Who's Melissa George?" Justin immediately recognizes the real ripped-from-the-headlines case that inspired this episode of The Good Wife. He also introduces the concept of "Aaron Sorkin Face." Erik finds himself a little disappointed in Christine Baranski's restraint throughout the episode. Matthew Lillard is, once again, the MVP. Echoes of Happy! and I Hope They Serve Beer In Hell abound. Justin appreciates that the judge is Uncle Junior. Erik mistakes the breed of Scooby Doo. Milkshake ducks appear and the notion of F. Murray Abraham as a heavy gets shattered.

His first book, I Hope They Serve Beer In Hell, is a #1 New York Times Best Seller, spent five years on the list, and has over 2 million copies in print. His second book, Assholes Finish First, and his third book,Hilarity Ensues, are also NY Times Best Sellers. He co-wrote and produced the movie based on his life/book, also titled “I Hope They Serve Beer In Hell.” He has also been credited with being the originator and leader of a new literary genre, “fratire,” is only the third writer (after Malcolm Gladwell and Michael Lewis) to ever have three books on the NY Times Nonfiction Best Seller List at one time, and was nominated to the Time Magazine 100 Most Influential List in 2009. He currently lives in Austin, Texas. Favorite Success Quote “Every day write down one example of you working your process and one example of how you are making your life about other people” Key Points 1. Life is Not Complicated but it is Difficult Many people like to make life seem more complicated than it really is. In reality, life is simple, but it is hard as hell and it boils down to two things: -The relationships you have with the people that you love -The work you do If you can master the relationships in your life and you can do work every day that you find personally fulfilling, allows you to have freedom, and adds value to others, than you are about as successful as they come. 2. The Best Way to Make Money is to Help People If you want to be rich, then you have to help a lot of people. Making money is all about the art of problem solving and helping others improve their lives in a way that they cannot wait to pay you. Everyone is in pain and everyone is struggling with something in their lives, no matter how rich, good looking, or successful they are, and if you can find that thing and offer them a solution that genuinely works, you will be able to make more money than you ever imagined. 3. Achieving External Success Alone is Unfulfilling In the interview Tucker talked about how he had all of the external trappings of success. Millions of dollars in income, meet and sleeping with countless beautiful women, a healthy body, and a great career, but still found it ultimately unfulfilling, because he had not done the work on himself. No matter how much you achieve in your life, if you do not work on yourself and if you do not take care of your emotions and inner world, no amount of outward success will leave you fulfilled. 4. Knowing Is Not Enough If everyone in the world acted on what they knew, we would live in a society where everyone was happy, healthy, wealthy, and wise. Think about it… Everyone knows that to be healthy you should move more and eat less. Everyone knows to be wealthy you should work hard and smart, and spend less than you make. Everyone knows to be wise you should read more and be around smarter people. So why the hell don’t people do this? They have an action problem, not a knowledge problem. If you want to succeed in life, you have to take the action, knowing is not half of the battle, it’s about 10% and massive effing action is the other 90%. 5. You Make Your Own Purpose Many people have been sold a lie that they have to go on this mystical journey to find their purpose. That if they go and meditate in a dark cave a ball of light will come down from the heavens to reveal to them what they need to do. This is pure bullshit. If you are struggling to find a purpose it is because you don’t find a purpose you make one! Pick something that you enjoy and are good at that will allow you to maximize your relationships with the people you love and serve the world, and you have successfully found a purpose worth living for. Like we said earlier, this is quite simple, but not easy. But it is also worth it.
The best-selling author tells Cal how he transformed from writer of the New York Times bestsellers I Hope They Serve Beer In Hell and Assholes Finish First to a dad playing Candyland with his kids. That, in itself, is quite a story. But that’s not all. He’s also founded a publishing company called Scribe to help people write their books. This also has Cal very curious. Many takeaways on the state of the publishing industry and personal growth from a master raconteur.

I’ve known Tucker Max for 2 decades now. 20 years ago, he emailed me for advice. I told him to quit his job. And he did. He’s the bestselling author of “I Hope They Serve Beer in Hell.” And I always tell people that if they want to study good writing, go read 10 pages of Tucker's books. “My stuff blew up... All I did was stand up and use my real name and tell my real stories about my real life.” So now Tucker wants to help other people get out there and tell their truth. This part 1 of my interview will tell you how to separate the truth from everything else. Then (in part 2), Tucker will tell you how to deal with fear, how to find your audience, and how to write. You're in for a treat this week, #PawdcastNation! We're joined by best-selling author, father, and entrepreneur, Tucker Max of I Hope They Serve Beer In Hell and Book in a Box! We begin this podcast by diving deep into Tucker's past. We ask about his upbringing. We talk about the experiences that lead him to write. We discuss how his career accidentally started thanks to email forwarding, how he was turned down by every major publisher in the beginning, how he utilized the infancy of the internet in order to create one of the first internet-based “followings" that lead to his book becoming an eventual New York Times Best Seller. He talks about what it’s like having a movie based on his life, and perhaps most importantly of all, how that movie ended up failing. On the other side of the spectrum, we discuss Tucker's latest venture, Book in a Box. We chat about what Book in a Box is, how the idea came to be, what his goals are, how the operations of Book in a Box work, and yes, even how Tucker fired himself as CEO and why he made that decision to do so. Tucker has one of the most fun personalities we have had on the show yet, and a great story with a ton of awesome content to boot. You're going to love this episode of #thePawdcast, we just know it. Books have the power to teach, transform, entertain, sell and spread ideas, and to build credibility and celebrity for its author. Today's guest is one of the most criticized and controversial authors in modern times and one of the most disruptive, inventive, and successful authors on the planet.Tucker Max is a three-time #1 New York Times best-selling author that has sold over 3 million books worldwide. He is only the third writer (after Malcolm Gladwell and Michael Lewis) to ever have three books on the New York Times Nonfiction Best Seller List at the same time! He singlehandedly created a new genre of books called “fratire” with titles such as “I Hope They Serve Beer In Hell,” “Assholes Finish First,” and “Hilarity Ensues.”Those who have followed his path have witnessed a remarkable reinvention of his personal brand from a slinger of hilarious and misogynistic tales of debauchery to disrupting the book publishing industry and tripled his royalties to becoming the Founder and CEO of a multi-million dollar business helping people to write best-selling books, without ever typing a word. Tucker's company, Book in a Box, has created an ingenious way for people to write books fast, without ever writing a word.On our call today we discuss the process of that and discuss unique effective strategies to market your book and build your brand on the back of it. We also discuss some of the growing pains that Tucker experienced as a CEO and how he found his own executive coach who became a partner in this business from reading dozens of books by other coaches and settling on Cameron Herold, the author of Double Double and a future guest of Bacon Wrapped Business. Some Topics We Discussed Include:The Book In A Box process of turning your ideas into a bookReasonable expectations and return on investment of writing a bookUnique and effective ways to use your book as a marketing toolHow to properly target your audience before the book gets writtenBrad's unique strategy of using Amazon to gift your book to highly influential peopleThe importance of finding quality CEO/COO for your business and how Tucker did it.Love the show? If you're in the entertainment business, you've got to be able to tell a great story. That was fine for awhile. I made pretty good money, it was fun, it was interesting, but I had no desire to be a marketing guru. It's hard for me to think of a writer that I've ever met who's a real entrepreneur. It's a totally different mindset. Everyone wants to be a star, no one wants to put in the work. I became obsessed with this idea because she called me out on it. Socrates didn't write a word down. Plato wrote everything down. Jesus never wrote any of his words down. Buddha never wrote any of his words down. None of these people wrote their words down, a scribe did. So why can't I create a modern process for scribes? I felt so stupid, I felt so dumb. Because there was nothing stopping me from doing this idea like 6 years ago. I could have had this years ago if I didn't have such limited thinking. Very few people have big ideas in them. Most people know something that's valuable to a small group of people. If you're a professional and you get paid to do something, you're probably getting paid for the knowledge and wisdom in your head. So it's not "How can I sell copies of my book?", the question is, "How can I put my knowledge and wisdom in my book and use the book as an all-purpose marketing tool for me or my company or my career?" Once you look at a book not as an end goal but as a marketing tool, then it totally changes everything. The ideas that most people hold in their head about publishing are ideas that publishing companies think are important, not ideas that people think are important. We're in the business of producing the absolute best books possible for the author. I would say, at best, 20% of people have genuinely either new or original ideas. What do you have to say that's interesting and valuable to an audience? I wish I was one of those people who from an early age was always hustling and selling and creating value. At Book in a Box, I just fired myself. We just hired a CEO to take over for me. There's no bigger waste of time than trying to learn how to do something you're bad at. You're way better off hiring someone to do that for you so you can do the things you're really good at. All the critical mistakes we've made in our business have either come down to being too arrogant about our knowledge & not questioning enough, and hiring the wrong people. That's the cool thing about business though, it's like baseball. It's even better than baseball. In baseball, if you hit .300, you're a Hall of Famer. In business, you can hit .100 and be a massive success. If you're going to fail, that's fine. But you need to understand why. If you're taking 9 different ideas and failing 9 different times, I think the problem might be you. There's so many people trying to teach the wrong things. Some people want lifestyle businesses and there's nothing wrong with that. If you want to be a baller entrepreneur and you want to build a massive baller company, you don't want to be selling your time. You don't want to be in the business, you want to be in the business of creating leverage for other people. There's a limit to how big you can scale an agency. There's no limit to how big you can scale a software-based process. If you have problems turning what you love into a business, it's probably some psychological issue you have, it's not the process. The process is very simple. It's not easy to do, but it's very simple to understand. Something you love doing, something people will pay you for, and something that you're good at. Where those three areas intersect, that's where you can build a business. Most people, when they say "how do I turn my passion into a business," what they are really asking is "how can I get paid to do nothing." That's bullshit. No way to do that. If you want to start a business, the easiest thing to do is find a problem that is really painful to people. Then create a solution that they will pay for. Starting a business is really easy if all you do is think about it in terms of other people's problems. Tucker Max is most well known for his book I Hope They Serve Beer In Hell, and is now leading the company Book In A Box which is focused on helping authors become self-published. Tucker knows better than anyone the pain that can come from not realizing your strengths and weaknesses and being able to truly focus on what you're good at. As he says, you can't do everything by yourself, and it's important to have the right self-awareness to be able to ask for help at the right time. Tucker Max received his BA from the University of Chicago in 1998, and his JD from Duke Law School in 2001. He even attended Duke Law School on an academic scholarship, where he neglected to buy any of his textbooks for his final two years and spent part of one semester–while still enrolled in classes–living in Cancun. His first book, I Hope They Serve Beer In Hell, is a #1 New York Times Best Seller, spent five years on the list, and has over 2 million copies in print. His second book, Assholes Finish First, and his third book, Hilarity Ensues, are also NY Times Best Sellers. He currently lives in Austin, Texas. Tucker and business partner, Zach Obront, took his knowledge of publishing and created Book in A Box. The company has the formula for book creation, and is the result of a challenge to Tucker to help a woman produce her book — $4 million in sales later, Book in a Box is growing rapidly and created over 200 books. Site: http://www.audiobooks.com/podcast | Email: podcast@audiobooks.com Welcome back to the Audiobooks.com Podcast! Halloween has passed, November is upon us and we can finally start thinking about Thanksgiving here in the United States. No more being shy about ordering pumpkin spice lattes, it's now a shameless request. There are a lot of fantastic autumn beverages that often get overlooked, though, like Masala Chai and apple cider. If you have a favorite autumn beverage that gets overlooked, write us and tell us what it is! We have a very special treat for you this week as we invited entertainer and entrepreneur Tucker Max to join us. The truth is, every week is a special week, every guest is a special guest, but we are excited to share this interview with you because of the unique change Tucker has brought to the world of books and audiobooks. Google and Wikipedia will tell you about the Old Tucker Max, the one without a wife and a son, the one who wrote I Hope They Serve Beer In Hell, and the one who basically helped form the genre fratire. What they don't spend a lot of time describing is the New Tucker Max, the one who we got to chat with in this interview and the one who is re-inventing what it means to author books. As much as we celebrate audiobooks on the appropriately titled Audiobooks.com Podcast, we also celebrate the opportunity to consume knowledge from those who have the expertise and experience to provide it. Unfortunately, by the nature of that position in life, a book containing that knowledge often ends up being compiled in a memoir. The relevance of its content, upon release, is already losing its criticality and is thus treated by the media and public as more of a biographical work. Book in a Box is changing everything. Tucker Max and his business partners have developed a method which enables a person with expertise to get relevant knowledge out to its target audience while it is still critical. As audiobook lovers, we can appreciate the time it takes to either read or listen to a book, which says nothing about the time it took an author to write it. The greatest aspect to Book in a Box is that it does not take a person with this critical knowledge more than 12-16 hours over the phone! Time, as a caveat to producing relevant content, is almost negligible. This process has amazing potential and we are excited to see the products that result from it. Check out the links below for more information on this enterprise, as well as the books that Tucker Max has written! Then, send him a thank-you for taking the time to chat with us. Show us some love! From butt-chugging and fratire to using baby cries to torture prisoners of war, my conversation with Tucker Max started out as exciting as his personality would lead you to expect. It's a roller coaster of awesomeness on multiple levels. Before I left Tennessee to move to Lexington (Tucker's home town), I had a buddy request that I read Tucker's book “I Hope They Serve Beer In Hell.” I did, and I praised Tucker's ridiculous humor and shenanigans along with the rest of the world. Never did I think I'd be chatting with him four years later. Despite the media and world perception of Tucker being a face-down pants-down raging alcoholic hellion with no respect for anything beyond bitches, hos, and blackout bonanzas, he is quite the opposite. Most people say he's “grown up,” but I think it's way beyond a simple label. The dude was fucking brilliant when he released his books, and he knew exactly the effect his stories would have on the world. He knew how to make people laugh and intrigue them beyond belief. He mastered the game of publishing, selling and creating a revolutionary money-making brand. He didn't do this by chance. He's a brilliant author and entrepreneur with a drive for constant personal development and success. He always has been. I took this episode as an opportunity to diagnose how Tucker handled his transition from college frat boy superhero to happily married father and CEO of the brilliant Book in a Box- a hands free service to turn your ideas into a published book. I think Tucker made like $20k in the amount of time we chatted. I also learned that I was a much heavier drinker than him in the past :X To defeat Godzilla with his talents… “He is a lizard, right? Why don't you just use ice? I mean, he must be like any other reptile. I will wait until it is night time and dump ice on him.” Advice… Alcohol tastes good in the mouth, I don't need to pour it in my butt. If you ever want to torture someone, try “baby crying” noises. Interview Links Book in a Box Website Tucker's Website Tucker's Facebook Page Tucker's Twitter Handle Highlights 15:15: Tucker vehemently denies that he drinks more than me but admits to having demons like everyone else. Listen to him reminisce about his way of dealing with personal demons and how he came to the realization that achieving financial success does not equate to personal happiness. Tucker, being Tucker, says he compares coming to that realization to a near-death experience with a caveat to be careful with near deaths because you might just get the death experience without the “near” part of it. 22:22: “I Hope They Serve Beer in Hell,” Tucker's first book was an eye-opener except that it took him more than a decade to open his eyes to the real need to have an authoritative how-to- turn-ideas-into-a-book-without-actually-having-to-write-one. He comes up with fascinating insights on the difficulties of being a writer. Listen to how a colleague ropes Tucker into this project by pointing out the preposterous absurdity of his raison d'etre. This was the birth of Book in a Box and the amazing unfolding of this project to its eventual ground swell to some sort of writer's bible is narrated by Tucker in his irreverent but nonetheless sincere awe for how his process actually answers a real need. 30:05: Listen to how Book in a Box is packaged. This is bigger than itself. It is an awesome project with a complete set of services from concept to interview to outline to actual writing by someone else, to book form to publishing. Listen to Tucker get serious about how he amazes even himself with the success of this project. 39:00: Despite Tucker's success with Book in a Box, he wants to expand his mission and talks about his future plans. Listen to him give his no holds barred opinions of certain books that made it to the New York Bestseller List too.

Interview Highlights There is 1 way to know if your writing us good and that's if people who don't know you and don't care about you read it and recommend it to their friends. Quality is not measured by how beautiful your sentence is. The quality of your writing is measured by how may people take value from it. There is no such thing as a strategy that works all the time. If you're an author and you think that selling a lot of books will change your life and will solve all your problems and make everything better and complete you as a person - it won't. All that money does is make you a bigger version of whatever you were before. Useful links Book in a Box Book in a Box book (coming soon)
