When mandolinist Sierra Hull was little, her dad told her she was really good "for a ten year old." The older Hull knew Sierra had a fiery passion for the instrument and he knew exactly how to motivate his daughter. He went on to say that if she wanted to go to jams and porch-play for the rest of her life, she'd learned enough. He gave her realistic advice that, if she wanted to dedicate her life to music, she would have to work really hard. Because "that 10 year old cute thing is gonna wear off." Sierra, who would draw pictures of herself playing at the Grand Ole Opry with Alison Krauss and doodle album covers with the Rounder Records logo, took his advice to heart and got to work.Since then, Hull has shared the stage with more heroes than one could count, she's inspired a new generation of younger players, she's released five albums, and is considered a master of the mandolin. Originally from the small town of Byrdstown, Tennessee, her new album, 'A Tip Toe High Wire,' is set for release March 7. In our Basic Folk conversation Sierra reflects on how growing up in a small town shaped her musical identity alongside bluegrass, gospel, and family traditions. She shares memories of family gatherings filled with music featuring Aunt Betty and Uncle Junior, the profound influence of church hymns, and how these experiences continue to resonate in her playing and songwriting.Sierra also discusses the significance of 'A Tip Toe High Wire,' her first independent release, highlighting the freedom and growth that come with that independence. She emphasizes the importance of authenticity in her music, allowing herself to explore new sounds while remaining grounded in her bluegrass roots. Elsewhere in the episode, she opens up about her personal growth, the pressures of being labeled a child prodigy, and her journey toward embracing imperfection in her art. We also dive into what we'll call her "Stevie Nicks Era" with the amazing cover-art on the new record. Sierra enjoys playing with elaborate styles in her album artwork and red carpet looks (helloooo CMA Awards). With a candid perspective on the challenges of the music industry, she encourages listeners to find joy in the process while appreciating the beauty of vulnerabilityAlso woo hoo!!! Tony has a crisis of identity in Costa Mesa, while the family and Family both struggle with the aftermath of Uncle Junior's actions at the end of "Members Only". There are tremendous performances all around, some entrancing (and bizarre) writing, and a cold but beautiful color palate, but the star of the show here is the performance of Edie Falco. Chris, Paul, & Jordan discuss how this episode simultaneously closes the emotional threads on Season 3, but also leaves many intriguing possibilities for Season 4. A lot happens in this hour, but the big questions that loom over the head of our favorite Jersey Mob boss in this episode have no easy answers: How has the life Tony leads affected his children? Can Tony and Carmela save AJ from the catastrophic fate met by Jackie Jr and the many other doomed young men we've met on this show? Can Meadow reconcile her own sense of morality when she, more than anyone else, is able to recognize the hypocrisy and "bullshit" of the family she was born into? This finale wrestles with these questions in a beautiful and satisfying way, while also providing no solid answers. Plus! Vito can receive what Johnny's feeding him, but can he receive the love and affection he craves? As noted on the pod, this show was made for the modern cynical misanthrope, so don't count on love setting anyone free. While Vito is trying to find himself in New Hampshire, our favorite failson, AJ Soprano, is in New Jersey doing the same. Working at Blockbuster has its perks. He had an opportunity study knife fights in movies and utilize the techniques in an assassination attempt on Uncle Junior. But, AJ being AJ, he fumbles the blade before he has a chance to avenge his father. AJ is good guy, in that he is too soft and incompetent to kill someone. Happy Wine Wednesday!  We are leaving the zombie apocalypse in Georgia and heading to northern New Jersey to explore the groundbreaking pilot episode of the HBO series, The Sopranos.  Grab your wine, your gabagool,  and join us for our second installment of our special series - The Pilot Project! As always, we kick things off with what we liked and did not like about the pilot.  There are very few weak spots in the episode, but Kristine had a few issues with some of the acting.  Jocelyn took issue with some of the less than subtle moments in a pilot episode that was otherwise strong at subtlety.  No conversation about The  Sopranos would be complete without unpacking the opening credits and praising the very memorable theme song "Woke Up This Morning" by the Alabama 3.Next up, we unpack all of the tension - sexual or otherwise - between Tony and Dr. Melfi. With Kristine being a newbie to the series, it was fun to have her dabble in a bit of wild speculation about how Tony's mafia colleagues will react once they find out that the guy who appears poised to take over the family has started therapy.  We also get into all of the family dynamics featured in the pilot - Tony/Uncle Junior, Tony/Livia, and Tony/Carmella.  We also explore the Tony Soprano we see in reality versus the image of Tony that he wants Dr. Melfi to believe.  The man is no Gary Cooper! We talk about the standout performances and Kristine shares whether or not the pilot left her wanting more of the Soprano family.  We then dabble a little in thirsty thoughts and close out with a spoiler section.  No need to worry, you'll get a heads up before Jocelyn shares key plot points from the rest of the series.  Be sure to check out our first installment of The Pilot Project in which we discussed the pilot episode of The Walking Dead - "Days Gone Bye."Until next time!Support the show (https://ko-fi.com/morewinepod)

In this episode where characters are forced by their circumstances to stagnate and be "still", we get to see how the stress and sociopathy of mob life inflicts deep permanent wounds on these characters. Meanwhile, as Tony and Junior are struggling with forced mundanity, Melfi's life is coming unraveled because of her treatment of Tony. Plus we eagerly dissect the truly scintillating performance of Uncle Junior by Dominic Chianese in this episode, combined with a magnificently subtle outing by writer Terrence Winter.      In this episode Michael Imperioli and Steve Schirripa try something new. They invite Sopranos Celebrity Super Fan Pete Davidson, star of SNL and The King of Staten Island to the podcast. Steve always said he wouldn’t have anyone on the podcast who wasn’t part of the show but Pete is a huge Sopranos fan. He has seen the entire series 10-15 times, knows everything about the show and even has an awesome Bada Bing tattoo to prove it. Pete is a fantastic guy and absolutely loves talking about the Sopranos. He tells us about his favorite episode, favorite villain and after all his extensive research what he thinks happened in the end. Michael and Steve also talk to Pete about how he got his start in comedy, SNL and his hit movie The King of Staten Island.     Then Michael pulls out some old casting notes from Marco Polo, a show he wrote. When he was pre-producing the episode, casting was looking for someone to play Dr. Russ Fegoli. They started by going through the original casting notes for Bobby Bacala Sr. and Uncle Junior. Michael kept the actual documents and tells us who’s on the list and all the comments associated with each actor. It’s fascinating!     After that Michael and Steve get into this week’s episode. Paulie is out of jail and complaining, Adrianna thinks she has a way out from under the Feds and Tony’s old goomah ends up in a very unlikely place. It’s all this week on Talking Sopranos #47, “Watching Too Much Television” S4-Ep7.        This week on Talking Sopranos Michael and Steve welcome everybody’s favorite Soprano’s character, Dominic Chianese (Uncle Junior). In this rare and revealing interview Dominic talks about his start in musical theater and his long and impressive singing career. He shares how he learned the craft of acting and how discipline and process played such a huge role in his success. He also talks about working with Al Pacino, Francis Ford Coppola and how he got the part in the Godfather.      Dominic talks about getting the role on the Sopranos and how it completely changed his life. At age 62 he literally went from a one-bedroom apartment to living the high life. How working with Nancy Marchand was such a pleasure and how James Gandolfini was the brother he never had. It’s also no surprise that Dominic’s favorite lines were the throw aways like “Pass the Peppers” and “Get your number 2 pencils and get out of here!”       Then Michael and Steve break down this week’s episode. Things are heating up between Furio and Carmela and the 90 lb mole on Ginny Sack’s ass is going to be a huge problem. Michael and Steve also talk about diets, superstitions and the evil eye. It’s all this week on Talking Sopranos S4-Ep4 “The Weight”. For episode nine, Anna Hossnieh from The Daily Zeitgeist and Ethnically Ambiguous podcasts joins Pod Yourself A Gun to talk "Boca," episode nine of The Sopranos. Released March 7, 1999, "Boca" is allegedly a double meaning title, referring both to Uncle Junior's trip to Boca Raton with his girlfriend Bobbi Sanfilipo, and as in Italian/Spanish for mouth, since this episode is all about loose lips. Junior's loose lips because he likes to perform cunnilingus, and Bobbi's because she loves cunnilingus and loves to gab to all her friends about Junior's cunnilingus skills. Which is a problem for Junior because apparently in the mafia, doing oral sex on a lady makes you gay. Doing the last thing any gay man would want to do is one of the gayest things you can do, as we know. Eventually he pulls a modified Cagney on her which seems extremely rude. Other plotlines include Meadow's soccer coach abandoning the team to coach at Rhode Island, and Meadow's soccer coach having sex with one of the players, which leads her to slit her wrists on the swingset, which is where everyone loves to slit their wrists, obviously. Meanwhile Artie and Charmaine bicker over what to do about Tony, and Artie and Tony bicker over what to do with the soccer coach, and Junior and Mikey Palmice bicker over what to do about the feds. Silvio just nods a lot. Supposedly he wore his own golf hat for this episode. Incredible. If you love us, leave us a review, or even better pay us for our time over on Patreon. This is usually a German Podcast, but some of my German listeners thought they would like to brave the original Idaho dialect of my Uncle. In German I've made a whole episode about the life of my Grandfather (Nasty Ned) to just give a slice of daily life of an American in northern Idaho. To learn more about these stories -- and episodes I have done about WWII, the Vietnam War, Hunting and Fishing with my Brother and Junior with my Grandpa Ned -- I recorded a conversation with my Uncle Junior. He's spent most of his life in the region where I've talked about the Nez Pierce and Lewis and Clark, the Gold Rush and Trappers, but also the Aryan Nations and Ruby Ridge. We talked about how my Grandfather spent a few Idaho winters in an army tent and sending back Black Jack money during the war.For the usual audience of this show there is also a version of this conversation with German commentary: https://aca.st/432a16Eine podcastnik.com Produktion. He was the scheming Uncle Junior in "The Sopranos" and Hyman Roth's coldblooded henchman Johnny Ola in "The Godfather Part II," but in real life, actor Dominic Chianese is a real mensch (or at least the Italian equivalent). Dominic joins Gilbert and Frank to talk about his early career struggles, his love of music, his days as a folk club emcee and working with legends Lee Strasberg, Sophia Loren, Sidney Lumet, and lifelong friend Al Pacino. What a weekend. The night before this party I was in Paris at the Funk4Food party. Kudos to the courage of HBO to book me for this significant party despite knowing that I'd have to return from Paris on the day of the event! Needless to say, there was no sleeping for me after hanging out with Parisians until the break of dawn...I could sleep on the plane, but while doing so, I had classic rock seeping through my ear hole as I tried to shift my musical focus from the disco funk vibes spun in Paris to the sounds that would be on the menu for this epic Sopranos cast & crew gathering. Classic rock? Not every party needs the seemingly default musical vibe of various strains of house music and mash-ups. With the overwhelming number of mature adults in the house, and on a monster sounds system built for a rock band at Roseland - and with Bruce Springsteen's Little Steven sitting right in front of me, I was going to create a Rock & Roll and Soul vibe for the party people to enjoy, not endure. What you hear here is the 1st couple of hours, setting the stage. The cast & crew are arriving and saying their hellos, embracing, and checking out the elaborate recreation of an Italian Street Fair. There will be speeches and Uncle Junior is going to perform in a little while, setting me up nicely to play a set that will speak to everyone in the room without pushing the dance floor vibe too soon. Rolling Stones, Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Santana, Jimi Hendrix, Cream, Eric Burdon & War, Stevie Wonder, Buddy Miles, Van Morrison, Curtis Mayfield, & Buddy Guy are in the mix. Everyone in the house felt right at home - you know the people of this caliber are rocking this good stuff at home and in their limos so to hear this music on this massive sound system in a state of revelry...well, when does that happen? Before the night ended, an elegant lady came up to the booth and told me how she liked the progression of the sounds and how the flow of the music made the party feel just right. She asked me if I made CDs and I told her that I was recording the night. She was delighted and told me that her husband was impressed as well. He came up to shake my hand and echo her statements. This was David Chase, the creator of the Sopranos and his wife. I still suspect that when the final season hit the airwaves, the promo that featured a blend of Paint It Black by the Rolling Stones and Eric Burdon's version with the band War, may have been inspired by Mr. Chase hearing the Eric Burdon version at the party. Maybe, maybe not? It's all good. Speaking of the Stones, one song that I love to play at these HBO parties is the Rolling Stones' "Gimmie Shelter." I love this song and I've always been tempted to rock it twice, although that would be kind of a strange move for a DJ, so at the end of this mix you will find an extended edit that I did that stretches this classic from it's official 4&1/2 minutes to 7&1/2 minutes...had to extended the intro and break so that folks could jam...or rock out. No additives, not a mash up with electronic drums and sound effects added, just "Gimmie Shelter" elongated. Check out coverage of the event here, I don't make this stuff up: http://www.bizbash.com/content/editorial/e5931.php Versatility = Longevity A set like this spawned mixes like these: http://djqoolmarvsounds.podomatic.com/entry/2010-06-21T21_44_42-07_00 http://djqoolmarvsounds.podomatic.com/entry/2010-08-07T21_07_24-07_00
