In 1978, Cheap Trick were much like their friends from KISS - they were working hard on the road, putting on great live shows but their studio albums weren't making much of a dent in the charts. However, thanks to opening for bands that were doing well in Japan, Cheap Trick amassed a nice following there and earned a #1 hit with the studio version of I Want You To Want Me (which didn't chart in the US). So the band decided to release a live album in Japan only to reward their fans in The Land of the Rising Sun. However, thanks to I Want You To Want Me's inclusion as a b-side from a single on their 3rd album Heaven Tonight and imports of At Budokan coming from Japan to the US, they released the live album worldwide and the rest is history. The live versions of tracks like Ain't That A Shame, Surrender and I Want You To Want Me are the quintessential versions of those tunes on US rock radio. Plus, Cheap Trick set up their next album for success as it included songs that would be included on Dream Police. For kids growing up in the late 70s, Cheap Trick At Budokan was in the air, on the turntables and sung along to everyday. This was a fun one to go back and give a listen as you can hear some of the punk influence on their riffs while maintaining that pure rock sound that helped get them into the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame. But make no mistake, without this album we wouldn't be talking about them today.           This week, a relaxed and very interesting chat with The Tragically Hip circa 1991.  Gord Downie and the band are promoting their second album, “Road Apples”. They talk about working in New Orleans, road testing their new songs and how many chances a song gets in the studio before they toss it out. They also talk about the time they were booked into a hip hop club as well as the time they played an Alberta gig on the worst possible night – it was the day that Gretzy got traded to L.A.           Then, we have a 1980 chat with Rick Nielsen and Bun E. Carlos of Cheap Trick.  This is a weirdly fun series of clips, as the band breaks down their history… going all the way back to the American Civil War???  And Rick talks about the wild success of “I Want You To Want Me” from their “Budokan” album.  This is a fun segment.           Bo Diddley was one of rock's pioneers. And in a couple of brief clip, Bo tells us about his previous career and then how he helped propel rock and rock to popularity. It's great to hear rock history from an artist who was there at the beginning!           And we finish off the show with a very entertaining chat with Nick Lowe. Nick talks about his history as an in-demand producer and how breaking the rules is so much easier when you don't know them in the first place. He also tells us about working with Dave Edmunds and Elvis Costello. And we also find out the funny story behind Nick's nickname, “Basher”.       Famous Lost Words is heard in 31 countries worldwide and on radio stations across Canada, including Newstalk 1010 Toronto, CJAD 800 Montreal, 580 CFRA Ottawa, AM 800 CKLW Windsor, Newstalk 1290 London, 610 CKTB St Catharines, CFAX Victoria, AM1150 Kelowna and 91x in Belleville.

Beyond The Fame with Jason Fraley

Rick Nielsen is best known as Cheap Trick's lead guitarist and main songwriter. In the late '70s, Cheap Trick helped popularize power pop with their songs “Surrender” and “I Want You To Want Me," which were precursors to the pop punk explosion in the '90s with bands like Green Day and Blink-182. In June, Cheap Trick released their 20th studio album, In Another World that's chock full of Rick Neilsen's monster riffs that recall their glory days in the 1970s. On today's episode, Bruce Headlam talks to Rick Neilsen about Cheap Trick's origin story while Neilsen fiddles around on an electric guitar and samples riffs from the new album. Nielsen also talks about how he was hired to bring a hard rock sound to John Lennon's final album with Yoko, Double Fantasy, and what it was like working with the Beatles legendary producer, George Martin. Founded in 1974 by Robin Zander (vocals, rhythm guitar), Rick Nielsen (lead guitar), Tom Petersson (bass guitar), and erstwhile drummer Bun E. Carlos, the Rockford, IL-born band is back with IN ANOTHER WORLD – their 20th studio collection and first since 2017’s double header of WE’RE ALL ALRIGHT! and CHRISTMAS CHRISTMAS. Produced by longtime associate Julian Raymond, the new LP sees the 2016 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees doing what they do better than anyone, crafting indelible rock ‘n’ roll with oversized hooks, mischievous lyrics, and seemingly inexorable energy. Trademark anthems like “Light Up The Fire” and “Boys & Girls & Rock N Roll” are countered by more introspective – but no less exuberant – considerations of times past, present, and unknowable future on such strikingly potent new tracks as “Another World” and “I’ll See You Again.” As irresistible and immediate as anything in their already awesome catalog, IN ANOTHER WORLD is Cheap Trick at their irrepressible best, infinitely entertaining and utterly unstoppable.“We’re too dumb to quit,” Nielsen says. “We just love to play.”Cheap Trick remain among the most influential and popular bands of any era, armed with an untouchable canon of certifiable classics like “He’s A Whore,” “California Man,” “Dream Police,” “Surrender,”  “I Want You To Want Me,” and the worldwide #1 hit single, “The Flame.” 2016 saw the band inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, a long overdue acknowledgement of a nearly five decade career that has earned Cheap Trick more than 40 international gold and platinum certifications, myriad awards and industry honors, featured appearances on over 20 movie soundtracks, and total record sales well in excess of 20 million.Thing is, where other artists of their vintage might be content to rest on their hard-earned laurels, Cheap Trick remain indefatigable, touring more than 150 nights each year while also continuing to expand their recorded catalog.“We’ve put out four albums in the last three years,” Zander says. “It’s a work ethic that I think comes from maybe growing up in the Midwest. It’s a different world now though. We made two records a year with our first four albums.”“We try to just knock it out,” Nielsen says. “We never were one of those bands that spent months and months and months and months sitting in a studio, trying to make it better and better and better.”Cheap Trick attributes much of their recent creative boom to both Daxx Nielsen – the band’s touring drummer since 2010 – and Academy Award-nominated producer/songwriter Julian Raymond, the de-facto “fifth member” of Cheap Trick and friend for more than three decades.“Julian’s a godsend,” Nielsen says. “Working with us is like herding cats, but he does it. He listens to everybody. Bad ideas, good ideas, he listens to them all. It’s what a real producer does.”“We consider him part of the band,” Zander says. “He’s a songwriter, a singer, a musician, a producer. He’s the whole package of somebody that you want to work with.”Sessions for IN ANOTHER WORLD got underway with Raymond in Nashville, during a free week amidst the band’s endless touring. The band’s approach to songwriting remains the same as ever, with each member contributing ideas and musical elements that are then made whole through collective creativity.“We all have home studios,” Zander says. “So the basic stuff – demos and pre-production – comes from our homes individually and then we bring that into the band. If it’s half-baked, we throw it back in the oven and fix it up. Then we set aside a week and go in and record the record.”“We’ve built up all these different ideas over all the years,” Petersson says. “There will be certain things that maybe didn’t strike people at the time but now it’s like, what’s that? Wow, that’s great.”Kicking off with “Here Comes The Summer” – which first appeared in 2018 as a standalone single titled “The Summer Looks Good on You” – IN ANOTHER WORLD is Cheap Trick at their most eclectic, touching on a myriad of distinct sounds and song approaches, from the breakneck “Another World (Reprise)” to the swampy Chicago blues number, “Final Days” (the latter boasting fiery harmonica from GRAMMY® Award-nominated singer and Wet Willie frontman Jimmy Hall).“Cheap Trick has always been diverse,” Nielsen says. “We didn’t just try to write a pop song and then make the rest of the record a bunch of other pop songs, just not as good.”“There’s a lot of nuance in our songs,” Nielsen says. “They sound fairly simple but they’re not.”To be sure, a slightly dark sense of unknowing permeates IN ANOTHER WORLD, imbuing songs like “Another World” and “So It Goes” with a haunting new meaning in these strange times. Though “The Party” might swagger like the Sunset Strip in the 1980s, the song is in fact, says Zander, about living on “the edge of death.”“This record in particular reflects what’s going on in the world around us right now,” Zander says. “We’ve always been a positive band, we’ve always been hopeful, even when we’re being tongue in cheek. But now that we’re getting older there’s not as much nyah-nyah-nyah-nyah-nyah going on.”“We don’t go out of our way to bring stuff up,” Petersson says. “Whatever happens, happens. I don’t know how to explain it. Everything seems crazy now but when we were growing up, it was crazy too. Vietnam, Nixon. Kent State. Somebody said to me, was it much better then? It was bad then. Was it polarized? Yes. Was it frightening? Yes. Looking back on it, it was that bad. At least then you could go to a rock ‘n roll show, but there’s nothing we can do about that at the moment.”From their very start, Cheap Trick have proudly asserted themselves as rock ‘n’ roll fans, a passion often manifested through inventive cover versions both on stage and in the studio. IN IN ANOTHER WORLD includes the band’s timely rendition of John Lennon’s still-relevant “Gimme Some Truth,” originally released for Record Store Day Black Friday 2019 and featuring the instantly recognizable guitar sound of erstwhile Sex Pistol Steve Jones.“That came from watching TV and listening to these politicians,” Zander says. “They’re just constantly shoved down your throat. That song just popped into my head and I thought, oh my god, it means more nowadays than it did back when John wrote it. So I went into my own studio and did a version of it. The single came out before the album but then later on, we decided, why not put it on the record?”“It’s so cool to have Jones on there,” Petersson says. “He’s a funny guy. He’s got a style that’s unmistakable; he’s got a great feel and a great sound. Just perfect for that type of song.”Cheap Trick are of course one of rock’s hardest working live acts, lighting it up at arenas, concert halls, and amphitheatres worldwide more than 150 nights each year. Alas, recent events have forced the band off the road for perhaps the longest hiatus of their storied history. Cheap Trick hope to return to the endless highway, with plans to support their good friends in ZZ Top’s 50th Anniversary tour now postponed until 2021.“We don’t go on tour for 18 months and then go home for 18 months,” Petersson says. “We’re on call, all the time.”“Right now, obviously, it’s out of our hands,” Nielsen says. “If we don’t see each other for a bit, or if we don’t play live for a week or two, we just fall right back into it. We never get rusty – we started out rusty.”IN ANOTHER WORLD makes it abundantly clear that Cheap Trick remain as one of a kind as ever before, indefatigably blasting out perfect pop rock ‘n roll with high craft, cheeky humor, and amp-blasting power. Indeed, IN ANOTHER WORLD stands as triumphant testament to Cheap Trick’s constant creative motion, these venerable veterans as energized and enthused as a young band just out of the garage.“On our first album I wrote, ‘I’m 30 but I feel like 16,’” Nielsen says. “Well, I still feel like I’m 16… at least until reality hits me. But when I get up and play, I still feel like the youngest guy up there.”“We’re always thinking about the next one, whatever it is,” Petersson says. “As soon as we finished the latest one and we’re like, okay, now what’s next? It’s nice, in that we have a creative outlet that we’re always looking forward to. You come home from the road and you’re playing guitar or hearing something on the radio, thinking, oh wow, that gives me a great idea for the next record. We’re always thinking that way. We’re always looking to the next one.”“This band is held together by music,” Zander says. “It’s the super glue that keeps us writing and putting records out. The reason we started the band in the first place was to tour and write songs and put records out. If all that went away, there would be no point then, would there?”

Cheap Trick Part 2In Part 2 of our Cheap Trick review we pick up in 1979 with the band deciding to record a live album while on tour in Japan to support their third album Heaven Tonight. The decision to record a live album to capture the mania surrounding the band in Japan proved to be career changing. At Budokan, originally slated for release in Japan only, changed the fortunes of Cheap Trick from opening act and small venue headliner to arena kings. Seemingly overnight, Cheap Trick became a household name in their home country on the strength of their first major hit “I Want You To Want Me.” We explore the significance of At Budokan and discuss the absolute brilliance of one of the best live rock albums ever recorded. From there, Cheap Trick recorded the hit album Dream Police. Leaving the 70’s, Cheap Trick created a legacy of 4 classic studio albums and 1 all-time great live album. The early to mid 80’s would not be as successful for the band as they experienced some commercial disappointment. Then out of nowhere in the late 80’s, Cheap Trick climbed again to the top of the world with a batch of pop songs that would put them back in the forefront. Many bands get one shot at superstardom and then fade away. Cheap Trick had two separate runs at superstardom. Although their music output of the 90’s and 2000’s has not been as commercially successful, the band continue to record and make relevant music. We wrap up Part 2 with our personal Top 10 songs by Cheap Trick. While many of our choices are predictable, you will want to hang around for the end for some surprises (and maybe some songs you were not familiar with). Enjoy Cheap Trick Part 2 as we celebrate one of the best rock bands America ever produced.Intro music provided by Joe Giddings"#1" from Star Collector's album Songs For The Whole Family

Formed in 1973 in Cheap Trick are one of the most successful and influential bands in Power Pop history. But to only fit them in the Power Pop box would not be accurate. Over the course of nearly 50 years, they have recorded songs that could be categorized as hard rock, prog rock, glam rock and even pure Top 40 pop. From the beginning, Cheap Trick were a contradiction of sight and sound – Lead Singer Robin Zander and Bassist Tom Peterson looked like they were cut out of the Rock n Roll idol template with their good looks and rock star presence. Meanwhile, Guitarist Rick Nielsen looked more like a character out of a comic book and Bun E. Carlos looked like - well your Dad. The music at one moment sounded like an evolution of The Beatles and then something more like a combination of weird prog, hard rock, glam and punk. While success would come in a big way in 1979 as Cheap Trick became one of the biggest bands in the world, they were hardly an Overnight Sensation. In fact, after three studio albums from 1977 – 1979, many wondered if Cheap Trick would ever become more than a regional rock band playing to a thousand fans in small clubs and theaters. They released their self-titled debut album in early 1977. The album received some favorable reviews but went unnoticed by record buyers and failed to crack the Billboard 200.The second album, In Color, considered one of their best studio albums was released later in 1977. While it fared better than the debut (#73) it still did not make many waves. But just when things seemed dire for Cheap Trick, something was brewing on the other side of the world in Japan where the album peaked at #30. They released their 3rd album Heaven Tonight in 1978 where the album would eventually reach #48 in US. Meanwhile, as the saying goes, they were Big in Japan where the album reached #11. On tour there in 1979, their lives would be changed forever. Intro music provided by Joe Giddings"#1" from Star Collector's album Songs For The Whole Family

Great news, people! We sort of, in a roundabout vague way, finally know what Listen To Your Heart is all about! Shout out to week 3 for extending those important details. It’s a singing competition with a love component, yes, and the couples are judged, sure, but what we don’t know is HOW these duets are scored. Do we have parameters? Is there a handy leader board? Will the judges hold up paddles? Heavens no.  At one point Jason Mraz offered a “great job,” as Ke$ha told someone they were beautiful, while JoJo and Fake Aaron Rodgers said one performance gave them chills. I’m pretty sure that’s equivalent to a check plus, a smiley face, and a grape scratch and sniff sticker.  Nevertheless, Some Guy in Austin and I break down the performances and provide our expert opinions. You should also know that I call Matt by the name of Mark half the time and in one instance, I identify Bekah as Bri.  We all in this together, dear listener. Since 1996, Fiona Apple has only ever had one hit, “Criminal.” Nonetheless, every album she’s released has been nominated for a Grammy. Her newest work, Fetch The Bolt Cutters, has received near universal acclaim. Apple’s songs are simultaneously idiosyncratic and relatable, tackling unusual themes for pop songs: middle school bullies, uncomfortable dinner conversation, toxic masculinity and female friendship. Apple accompanies her idiosyncratic lyrics with homemade percussion and only minimal piano. The final product is on the borderline between crafted composition and impromptu improvisation. It is this duality which makes the work relatable and timeless. Her two song suite “I Want You To Love Me” and “Shameika” have connections to Beethoven, Yeats, and Patti Smith, which we break down in the first half. And listeners call in during the second half to share what moved them about the album.  Songs Discussed Fiona Apple - Fast As You Can, Criminal, Under The Table, I Want You To Want Me, Shameika, Fetch The Bolt Cutters, Ladies, Heavy Balloon  Beethoven - Moonlight Sonata Patti Smith - Gloria: In Excelsis Deo Van Morrison - Gloria Support explainer journalism — all things pop included — by making a contribution to Vox today: Visit bit.ly/givepodcasts. Episode 27: Christmas Songs that Rock

What the Riff?!?

Episode 27 — Christmas Songs that ROCK We're trying something new in this podcast, folks. As Christmas approaches, we're highlighting some of the Rock and Roll Christmas songs we've heard over the years. From the sublime to the slightly corny, covers to originals, Rock music has lent its voice to the Advent season. Join us this week as we review some of the classics and deeper cuts that have made for a Rock and Roll Christmas season. Bing Crosby and David Bowie - Peace on Earth/Little Drummer Boy This song was featured in September of 1977 for "Bing Crosby's Merry Old Christmas," which would be the last of Crosby's Christmas specials. It was surreal to see the glam rock Bowie paired with American icon Crosby in this inter-generational duet. Bowie balked at performing "The Little Drummer Boy," and so creators Ian Fraser,Larry Grossman, and Alan Kohan added the "Peace on Earth" counterpoint. Twisted Sister - O Come All Ye Faithful Not exactly a classic of the genre here. Twisted Sister simply puts the words to “O Come All Ye Faithful,” with the music from their well known classic “We're Not Gonna Take It.” Cheap Trick - I Want You for Christmas Here's Cheap Trick's take on Christmas, just taking their hit "I Want You To Want Me" and converting it to a Christmas song. Not original, not a lot of staying power, but if you prefer your Christmas tunes to have a certain lounge lizard appeal, this may be what you're looking for. Chuck Berry (and Lemmy) - Rudolph Run From 1958, Berry takes his turn at a Christmas song which has become a standard over time. This tune was very similar to his hit “Johnny B. Goode.” Also featured is the 2008 remake by Lemmy Kilmister (of Motorhead fame), Billy Gibbons (ZZ Top), and Dave Grohl (Nirvana) in a distinctly crunchier take on the compilation “We Wish You a Metal Christmas.” Elvis Presley - Silver Bells Jay Livingston and Ray Evans wrote this song which was originally performed by Bob Hope and Marilyn Maxwell in the movie “The Lemondrop Kid” in 1950. Presley covered this song in 1971 for his Christmas album at the height of his comeback era. Presley never performed outside the United States. The Kinks - Father Christmas From 1977, this original song tells the story of a department store Santa who gets beat up by some poor kids looking for money. Over time this has become a classic Rock Christmas song, covered by a number of artists. You'll hear this tune on "That 70's Show" and "Bob's Burgers." Queen - Thank God It's Christmas Another original song from 1984, this song was on the UK charts for 6 weeks. Da Surfones - Waikiki Christmas It's not the Beach Boys, but close. Because who needs a White Christmas? Suddenly, Tammy! - Rock 'n Roll Santa Claus Alright folks, listen to this tune and see how many snippets you can identify. Gary Walker and the Boogie Kings - Santa's Got a Brand New Bag And, this is not James Brown. Another Christmas take on a prior hit, this time it's "Papa's Got a Brand New Bag" James Brown - Santa Go Straight to the Ghetto The Godfather of Soul has to get into the Christmas spirit. Run D.M.C. - Christmas in Hollis From 1987, this song was played in the 1988 (arguably) Christmas movie “Die Hard.” James Slater - All I Want from Santa (is a girl from Atlanta) This was a big hit in metro-Atlanta when it came out in 1983. Slater wrote this song for an upcoming gig in Atlanta, and it got solid air play on 96 Rock (WKLS) at this time. The Waitresses - Christmas Wrapping I know what boys like...for Christmas, perhaps. This Ohio group has another hit on their hands for the holidays. Greg Lake — I believe in Father Christmas They said there'd be snow at Christmas, they said there'd be peace on Earth. The instrumental riff is from the "Troika" portion Prokofiev's "Lieutenant Kije" Bob and Doug McKinsey - The Twelve Days of Christmas Our friends from SCTV and the Great White North close out the podcast with this comedy track from 1981.
