US Secretary of State Tony Blinken has recently discussed the two-state solution with the new right-wing government of Israel. The belated discussion is bound to yield no solution since the Israeli government plans a de facto annexation of territories in the West Bank. Violence and tensions will worsen between Israel and the Palestinians. And violence leads to more violence. Two questions arise: President Biden supports the two-state solution. Is he making any moves toward that goal? And the Arab states that normalised with Israel could they have pushed for the two-state solution in return for normalisation? Dr. Atef Abdel Gawad discussed these questions and others with a group of distinguished guests and experts : From Michigan the co-founder of Jewish Voice for Peace-Detroit Attorney Barbara Harvey, and the political analyst Dr. Abdalmajid Katranji, from Washington "Journalist Dan Raviv who is analyst, and a former Correspondent at CBS News then i24News. Trump also represents a big divide in the American Jewish community: whereas most of American born Jews living in the States do not support Trump, the majority of Israeli-born Jews living in the States do. So is Trump good for the Jews? Is he good for Israel? And, what will happen if Joe Biden wins tomorrow? To discuss all of this, and much more, we are joined by Oren Nahari. We hosted Oren on the podcast almost 4 years ago to discuss Trump after 30 days in office. Oren is a legendary Israeli foreign affairs correspondent, an author, a sci-fi geek and an avid cat person. We are thrilled to have him on the show today.

Yaron Ten-Brink, one of Israel's leading journalists.Yaron became very well known when he began writing a daily TV columns in the most widely circulated newspaper, back then, Yedioth Ahronoth. Since then he's held very senior editorial positions in print but also had a stint in TV, editing and producing top shows during prime time, and he and I also had the opportunity to work together on the Morning show of i24NEWS a few years ago. He currently edits the Tel Aviv edition of TimeOut magazine, and is a prolific tweeter, mostly on issues concerning the Israeli PM Netanyahu, and I feel like he's one of those people who really influences the discussion on social media. So, we talked a lot about the media in Israel, how it compares to other places like the States, how Bibi compares to Trump, and lastly - we even talk about cheese! Enjoy!Support the show (https://ko-fi.com/otherwiseoccupied)

Across Women's Lives
How comedian Noam Shuster-Eliassi became the woman who proposed to MBS

Across Women's Lives

On a recent Wednesday, Noam Shuster-Eliassi strolled around the tiny village in Israel where she grew up, Neve Shalom or "Oasis of Peace," wishing goodbye to her neighbors. The Israeli comedian was heading to Harvard University in just a few days for a fellowship at the Divinity School. There, she will be writing an hourlong comedy show in Hebrew, English and Arabic. She is calling it, “Coexistence My Ass.”The name pokes fun at Shuster-Eliassi's upbringing in the village, the only place in Israel designed for Israelis and Palestinians to intentionally live together. It also makes light of her career as a professional peace activist. After graduating from Brandeis University outside of Boston, Massachusetts, Shuster-Eliassi returned to Israel to work for the peacebuilding group, Interpeace.“You know, I care about the political causes, but I'm 31 and single, so, I go to the demonstrations mainly to look for a date. And when I go to the demonstrations, the problem is that the only people who actually look like they have taken a shower is the police officers.”Noam Shuster-EliassiBut with the political situation between Israelis and Palestinians at an impasse, Shuster-Eliassi felt she wasn't reaching people. So, she began telling jokes — about the unusual village where she grew up, her identity as the daughter of an Iranian-born Jew and her dating life as a leftist in Israel. Like this one she told an audience in London last year: “You know, I care about the political causes, but I'm 31 and single, so, I go to the demonstrations mainly to look for a date,” she said, to raucous laughter. “And when I go to the demonstrations, the problem is that the only people who actually look like they have taken a shower is the police officers.”Related: Cracking up or cracking down? For Saudi comedians, the red lines are a ‘moving target.'Shuster-Eliassi, now 32, says she doesn't just want to make people laugh — she wants to make them think. She also wants to challenge the power dynamics in the region. She recently appeared on an Arabic-language TV show on Israel's i24NEWS network. She joked that she was looking for a husband, and she's aiming high: the Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman — MBS. There was a political subtext to the joke: The governments of Israel and Saudi Arabia are drawing closer, and Shuster-Eliassi says it's happening at the expense of Palestinians.“There is no way in the world that we can solve the religious and political conflict that we have here, and the issues that we have here with Palestinians through going around over their heads and closing narrow deals with Saudi leaders.” Noam Shuster-Eliassi“There is no way in the world that we can solve the religious and political conflict that we have here, and the issues that we have here with Palestinians through going around, over their heads, and closing narrow deals with Saudi leaders,” she said. The next day, the video was all over Arabic media, with spots on Al Jazeera and BBC Arabic. Some news anchors took her seriously.“It was like I went to sleep a very anonymous woman,” Shuster-Eliassi said. When she woke up, she was known across the Middle East as the Israeli Jewish woman who proposed to MBS.Related: Lebanon's King of Comedy is on a global mission to make everyone laugh at the same joke. It's working.Shuster-Eliassi's political humor is popular with left-leaning Israelis. And it's also won her some Palestinian fans. Walking around Oasis of Peace, Shuster-Eliassi ran into one. Ahmad Muna was visiting the village from Jerusalem for the afternoon. He recognized Shuster-Eliassi from her videos and asked for a selfie with her. He says as a Palestinian, he appreciates her take. Israeli comedian Noam Shuster Eliassi takes a selfie with Ahmad Muna, a Palestinian fan from Jerusalem. Credit: Naomi Zeveloff/The World  Shuster-Eliassi captures “what Israel is about and what it is really doing in the region and doing to Palestinians.”Ahmad MunaShuster-Eliassi captures “what Israel is about and what it is really doing in the region and doing to Palestinians.” What makes her unique, he added, is that she's doing it from a point of view from inside Israeli society.Yet, sometimes there's a limit to Shuster-Eliassi's reach with Palestinians. Last year, she was the first Jewish comedian to perform at a Palestinian comedy show in East Jerusalem called the 1001 Laughs Palestine Comedy Festival. She was invited back this year. But at the last minute, her appearance was canceled. The organizer, Amer Zaher, told her that the politics got in the way.In an interview, Zaher named several reasons that the political environment is just too sensitive to bring an Israeli Jew onstage this year. Among them is the fact that Israel just banned two US congresswomen from entering the country on an official trip, citing their support for the Palestinian-led Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement. One of them was Rep. Rashida Tlaib, a Palestinian American. Zaher says comedy is about pushing boundaries, but there are limits.Related: Two reps were sworn in on the Quran. It's a symbolic moment for Muslim Americans.“We do want to push people to think and push people to expand their horizons a little bit, but that doesn't mean you want to offend the sensibilities of the whole society. How comedian Noam Shuster-Eliassi became the woman who proposed to MBS

She is calling it, “Coexistence My Ass.”The name pokes fun at Shuster-Eliassi’s upbringing in the village, the only place in Israel designed for Israelis and Palestinians to intentionally live together. It also makes light of her career as a professional peace activist. After graduating from Brandeis University outside of Boston, Massachusetts, Shuster-Eliassi returned to Israel to work for the peacebuilding group, Interpeace.“You know, I care about the political causes, but I’m 31 and single, so, I go to the demonstrations mainly to look for a date. And when I go to the demonstrations, the problem is that the only people who actually look like they have taken a shower is the police officers.”Noam Shuster-EliassiBut with the political situation between Israelis and Palestinians at an impasse, Shuster-Eliassi felt she wasn’t reaching people. So, she began telling jokes — about the unusual village where she grew up, her identity as the daughter of an Iranian-born Jew and her dating life as a leftist in Israel. Like this one she told an audience in London last year: “You know, I care about the political causes, but I’m 31 and single, so, I go to the demonstrations mainly to look for a date,” she said, to raucous laughter. “And when I go to the demonstrations, the problem is that the only people who actually look like they have taken a shower is the police officers.”Related: Cracking up or cracking down? For Saudi comedians, the red lines are a ‘moving target.’Shuster-Eliassi, now 32, says she doesn’t just want to make people laugh — she wants to make them think. She also wants to challenge the power dynamics in the region. She recently appeared on an Arabic-language TV show on Israel’s i24NEWS network. She joked that she was looking for a husband, and she's aiming high: the Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman — MBS. There was a political subtext to the joke: The governments of Israel and Saudi Arabia are drawing closer, and Shuster-Eliassi says it’s happening at the expense of Palestinians.“There is no way in the world that we can solve the religious and political conflict that we have here, and the issues that we have here with Palestinians through going around over their heads and closing narrow deals with Saudi leaders.” Noam Shuster-Eliassi“There is no way in the world that we can solve the religious and political conflict that we have here, and the issues that we have here with Palestinians through going around, over their heads, and closing narrow deals with Saudi leaders,” she said. It's working.Shuster-Eliassi’s political humor is popular with left-leaning Israelis. And it’s also won her some Palestinian fans. Credit: Naomi Zeveloff/The World  Shuster-Eliassi captures “what Israel is about and what it is really doing in the region and doing to Palestinians.”Ahmad MunaShuster-Eliassi captures “what Israel is about and what it is really doing in the region and doing to Palestinians.” What makes her unique, he added, is that she’s doing it from a point of view from inside Israeli society.Yet, sometimes there’s a limit to Shuster-Eliassi’s reach with Palestinians. It’s a symbolic moment for Muslim Americans.“We do want to push people to think and push people to expand their horizons a little bit, but that doesn’t mean you want to offend the sensibilities of the whole society. So, we have to be careful.”Amer Zaher“We do want to push people to think and push people to expand their horizons a little bit, but that doesn’t mean you want to offend the sensibilities of the whole society,” Zaher said, by way of explanation. “So, we have to be careful.”Shuster-Eliassi decided to go to the show anyway, as an audience member. Hello! And welcome to another edition of Inside The Newsroom. It’s been a while, and for that I apologize. First up was a two-week trip to Israel, which was immediately followed by a fever that limited me to my bed for a week. But I’m better now (hooray!) and it’s time for another juicy podcast newsletter. Today’s guest is Ryan Grim, D.C. Bureau Chief for The Intercept and contributor to The Young Turks. Ryan has covered the Democratic Party and left-wing politics for the past decade and is one of the foremost journalists on the topic. Make sure you check out his new book, We’ve Got People, which details the history of the progressive movement against the establishment. Enjoy!Pour One Out For Jesse JacksonIn his book, Ryan uses Jesse Jackson's 1988 presidential campaign as the start of the progressive movement as we know it. It’s remembered as ‘controversial’ because it caused major divisions within the party, similar to those that Bernie Sanders opened in 2016. Jackson ended up losing the nomination to Michael Dukakis, as the party’s establishment sided with the racist view that Jackson, a black man, could not become president. Ironically, we're still having the same debate more than 30 years later, only Barack Obama broke the racial barrier and now it’s whether a ‘socialist’ candidate can win. The 2020 race is in full swing and it's amazing to see how many candidates have paid tribute to Jackson. Sanders, Warren, Beto O'Rourke, Amy Klobuchar, Pete Buttigieg and Bill de Blasio have all associated themselves with Jackson. Meanwhile Jackson recently criticised Joe Biden for his position on voluntary busing — transporting students to different school districts to rectify racial segregation.Alex Thompson, PoliticoObama’s Progressive LegacyWhen Barack Obama first rose to prominence during the 2008 presidential campaign, he was seen by some as the darling of the progressive movement, with his calls for change flirting with populism. He'll go down as the most popular two-term Democratic president since FDR, but a lot has changed since then.Fast forward to the 2020 race and Obama is a target for many Democrat candidates. While we haven't seen the vitriol we saw from the Republicans in 2016, criticism of Obama's deportation policy and Obamacare have become more and more frequent, and are being turned against his vice president Joe Biden.T.A. Frank, Vanity FairLike Me, PleaseBefore you read on, please like this edition of Inside The Newsroom by clicking the ❤️ below the title. That way I’ll appear in clever algorithms and get more attention, because I need attention. Thanks.AOC Pulls Off The UnthinkableAt the beginning of June 2018, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez was barely known outside of New York City. Today she has millions of followers on social media and is one of the faces of modern progressivism. Below are a couple of videos of the moment she defeated the incumbent Democratic representative from District 14 for New York, with Ryan reporting somewhere in the background. Oh, if you haven’t seen the full documentary behind AOC’s win, you should have. Watch it. Schumer and Pelosi. BFFE 💕 The Democratic leadership has been in the works for more than three decades. Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer first met in the late 1980’s, at one of their so-called “dinner gang” gatherings in D.C., and have been pretty inseparable ever since. That’s not to say the two haven’t had their differences over the years, but to understand the divisions within the party in 2019, it’s important to know how we got to where we are in the first place. Alex Brown, The AtlanticTom PerezTom Perez walked into a complete s**t show as DNC chairman in 2017, months after Debbie Wasserman-Schultz was forced to shamefully resign the post for conspiring against Bernie Sanders in favor of Hillary Clinton. Things have gone either tits up or just fine since then, depending on who you ask. A lot of the work Perez has done has been to heal the trust lost by Wasserman-Schulz, though that hasn’t stopped critics from piling on over the DNC’s dismal fundraising efforts compared to their Republican counterparts. Michael Scherer, Washington PostThe Democratic Party Is Actually Three Parties. What?Perhaps the Democrats’ biggest challenge heading into the 2020 election will be uniting its different factions. Hillary Clinton and the DNC weren’t able to do so in 2016, in large part due to Donna Brazile’s revelations that the DNC rigged the Democratic primary in favor of Clinton. Once nominated, Clinton failed to reel in enough Bernie Sanders supporters and, well, we all know what happened from there. This time around, whoever wins the Democratic nomination will have to heal the damage carried over from 2016. And they’ll have their work cut out: Whoever wins will have the task of uniting not two, but three separate divisions within the Democratic Party, otherwise it could spell four more years for the Donald Trump. Thomas B. Edsall, the New York TimesMSNBC vs CNN vs FoxWe all know there are distinct differences between the three largest cable news outlets, but this amazing visualization by Charlie Smart of The Pudding analyzes thousands of data points. Unfortunately, whoever wins the Democratic nomination might just end up being who the cable outlets want to win. Born and raised in the crime capital of Israel, May Golan is a patriotic social activist who emerged as the voice and symbol of hope for the people of impoverished South Tel Aviv. May Golan is the Founder and CEO of the Hebrew City NGO.   In 2012 May wrote a much acclaimed weekly blog - "Life According to May" - about her daily life that provided a startling insight into the true fear and dark reality of a young woman's fight for daily survival in the lawlessness of South Tel Aviv. In her determined battle for public awareness of the brutal crimes committed by illegal infiltrators in South Tel Aviv, May created one of the most powerful social media networks in both English and Hebrew. May's successful online campaigning forced the mainstream media to start covering the previously ignored harsh reality. May is a frequent contributor in the media, radio and on television both on the subject of illegal infiltrators and social issues, as well as a political panelist on television. May has also featured on the cover of Haaertz, Globes, Maaariv and others, and been interviewed in English on i24News, the BBC and US Radio Stations. May also writes in English, most recently for Israel National News, Arutz7. To celebrate Israel's 66 years of Independence, Haaretz chose May as one of "66 Israeli Women You Should Know" and Time Out Tel Aviv named her as one of the "Most Influencial Tel Avivians". Channel 10 chose her as one the most influential Internet figures in Israel in a televised ceremony at the Israel President's Office alongside the CEO's of Facebook, Checkpoint and other public figures. May leads her Hebrew City NGO in fighting local and national Government, and the Supreme Court to take responsibility for the conditions forced upon the people of South Tel Aviv by the effects of their policies of mass illegal immigration. www.maygolan.com --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/themichaelcalderinshow/message
