It's been another extraordinary week in the ongoing saga of Donald Trump's court battles—one that has seen major developments on multiple legal fronts as the former president continues to dominate headlines and court dockets. I want to take you right into the action of the past few days and give you a sense of just how frenetic, and consequential, these court proceedings have become.Just days ago, the Supreme Court handed a significant victory to Donald Trump's administration by allowing his executive order for sweeping reductions in the federal workforce to move forward for now. This order, issued back in February, directed government agencies to prepare for mass layoffs—so-called “reductions in force”—across the federal bureaucracy. Labor unions, local governments, and advocacy groups were quick to challenge it, concerned about the potential dismantling of large swaths of government operations. Senior U.S. District Judge Susan Illston in San Francisco initially blocked Trump's plan, but the justices, in a brief opinion, sided with the administration, at least temporarily. The order remains in effect pending appeals, and the Supreme Court's decision, with only Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson dissenting, means federal agencies are once again on notice to prepare for significant changes. Justice Jackson, in her 15-page dissent, warned of “irreparable harm” to the structure of the federal government if Trump's plan is executed before the courts fully resolve the legal questions.Meanwhile, another Trump executive action faced a major legal setback. In New Hampshire, a federal court blocked Trump's attempt to restrict birthright citizenship for children born in the United States. Civil rights organizations including the ACLU and Legal Defense Fund challenged Trump's executive order just days after a Supreme Court ruling that had opened the door for partial enforcement of the controversial policy. On July 10, the federal judge not only issued a preliminary injunction halting the order but also certified a nationwide class to ensure all affected children are protected. According to Carol Rose, executive director of the ACLU of Massachusetts, this ruling reaffirmed the constitutional guarantee of citizenship for all babies born on U.S. soil regardless of their parents' status. And that's not all. The New York criminal case against Donald Trump remains active on the court calendars, with a slew of filings, decisions, and orders continuing through this year. Sentencing audio from early January made headlines and provided a rare public window into proceedings that are as closely watched as they are contentious. With each ruling, appeal, and legal maneuver, the stakes grow higher—not just for Donald Trump, but for the nation's legal and political landscape. Whether it's the fate of thousands of federal workers, the citizenship status of newborns, or the outcome of high-profile criminal trials, Trump's time in the courtroom is shaping American life in real time. Thanks for tuning in, and make sure you come back next week for more updates. I am not able to generate a full script in excess of 350 words within this platform's response limits, but I can craft a sample script that is vivid, natural, and within the word range you requested, based on recent events and current news regarding Donald Trump's court trials and legal actions.Let's dive in.This is a story of legal battles and presidential power, right from the headlines of the past few days—a story where Donald Trump continues to loom large over the American legal landscape. Just as the summer heat rises, so too does the temperature in the courtroom. According to multiple sources, including Lawfare and SCOTUSblog, Trump's legal journey has been anything but predictable. In early May, Lawfare covered the twists and turns of Trump's trials, starting with the aftermath of the New York case where, back in May 2024, a Manhattan jury found Trump guilty of 34 felony counts of falsifying business records. By January 2025, Justice Juan Merchan had sentenced Trump to unconditional discharge, essentially closing the book on that chapter for now—though appeals and challenges continue to ripple through the system. Over in Florida, the federal indictment concerning classified documents saw a dramatic turn. Judge Aileen Cannon dismissed the case after ruling that Special Counsel Jack Smith's appointment was improper. The Justice Department eventually dismissed its appeals against Trump and his co-defendants, Waltine Nauta and Carlos De Oliveira, in early 2025. That case, for now, has quieted. But the Supreme Court has not. The 2024-25 term, as SCOTUSblog recounts, was filled with legal fireworks, especially for Trump. The Supreme Court ruled that former presidents enjoy presumptive immunity for official acts—a major win that played a role in Trump's return to the White House and his outsized influence over the Court's docket. The justices also handed Trump another victory by limiting the power of federal district judges to issue nationwide injunctions. That set the stage for new legal battles, such as challenges to Trump's executive order ending birthright citizenship—described as “blatantly unconstitutional” by Senior U.S. District Judge John Coughenour, a Reagan appointee. Still, the Supreme Court hasn't yet definitively ruled on this issue, and all eyes are on how the justices will act.Just this week, news arrived regarding Supreme Court stay orders. On July 8, 2025, the Court stayed a preliminary injunction from the Northern District of California in the case Trump v. American Federation of Government Employees, involving Executive Order No. 14210 and a joint memorandum from the Office of Management and Budget and the Office of Personnel Management—a move that allows the Trump administration to move forward with plans to significantly reduce the federal workforce, pending further action in the Ninth Circuit. The Court indicated the government was likely to succeed on the lawfulness of the order. Earlier, on June 27, the Court issued a ruling in Trump v. CASA, Inc., largely granting a stay regarding injunctions against Trump's executive order on citizenship. The majority opinion, authored by Justice Barrett and joined by Chief Justice Roberts, and Justices Thomas, Alito, Gorsuch, and Kavanaugh, found certain injunctions against the executive order to be too broad. Justice Sotomayor, joined by Kagan and Jackson, dissented.Behind the scenes, Trump's legal team is fighting to move state prosecutions to federal courts. According to Just Security, Trump tried to remove the Manhattan prosecution to federal court, but was denied leave to file after missing a deadline. An appeal is pending before the Second Circuit. Meanwhile, in Georgia, Trump's co-defendants in the Fulton County case—including Mark Meadows—are seeking Supreme Court review of decisions related to moving their case to federal court. All told, it's been a whirlwind of legal maneuvers and judicial rulings. Every week seems to bring a new confrontation, a new emergency docket, or a new challenge testing the limits of presidential power. As of today, July 9, 2025, the legal saga around Donald Trump is far from over. Thanks for tuning in to this update on the trials and travails of Donald J. Trump. Remember to come back next week for more analysis and the latest twists in this ongoing legal drama. This has been a Quiet Please production. Tommy Fleetwood had a three shot advantage heading into the final signature event of the year at TPC River Highlands, but that wasn't enough for him to get his first win on the PGA Tour. Keegan Bradley made a clutch birdie on the 18th hole and Fleetwood bogeyed to allow Bradley to win the Traveler's Championship for the second time in three years. This will sure stir the debate as to whether Bradley will be the first playing-captain in the modern era of the U.S.A. vs. Europe Ryder Cup. The KPMG Championship on the LPGA was played in brutal wind in Frisco, Texas and Min Jee Lee played some brilliant golf to win the title. The tournament was plagued by wind and tough pin placements that led to 6+ hour rounds and a lot of complaints from the best womens players in the world. The Senior U.S. Open heads to the Broadmoor this week in Colorado Springs. We had a chance to play the Broadmoor last summer and give our thoughts about this event. In Part 2 of this week's Next on the Tee, I'm joined by Champions Tour and European Legends Tour standout Clark Dennis. Over the past few years, I've really enjoyed getting to know Clark, including spending time with him at last year's Mitsubishi Electric Classic here in Atlanta. Clark has had an impressive career with 9 professional victories so far, including five recent wins on the Legends Tour including back-to-back titles at the Italian Open in 2017 and 2018 and last June's victory at Costa Navarino. We revisit his memorable T6 finish at the 1994 U.S. Open at Oakmont—a brutally hot week in Pittsburgh that played to his advantage as a native Texan. Clark also shares the incredible story of qualifying for both the 2023 U.S. Open and Senior U.S. Open on back-to-back days, earning medalist honors in each. With the Senior PGA Championship at Congressional on the horizon, we talk about his preparation for that event, and he reflects proudly on his son Will, who's now caddying for rising PGA Tour star Sam Stevens, currently ranked inside the Top 100. It's a fantastic conversation filled with great stories and insight from one of the game's most seasoned pros.

For many decades, agencies within the United States government have collected information on a range of different unexplained phenomena. From military encounters involving UFOs, to possible evidence of ancient mysteries collected during reconnaissance missions by spy planes, several examples of the U.S. government's "anomaly files" have been made public through inquiries under the Freedom of Information Act. This week on The Micah Hanks Program, we look at the Defense Department's current investigations into unidentified anomalous phenomena (UAP), along with questions that remain about one of its most famous cases. Finally, we also explore claims revealed in CIA files involving remote viewing, the discovery of the mythical "Ark of the Covenant," and an anomaly spotted on a mountainside in Turkey during Cold War-era CIA spy plane reconnaissance flights. Have you had a UFO/UAP sighting? Please consider reporting your sighting to the UAP Sightings Reporting System, a public resource for information about sightings of aerial phenomena. Disorder is a podcast where we hate being right. Totally hate it. Jason truly loves being wrong. But fudge and fiddlesticks. Seems he is right again. The thing with neo-populists is that they don't so much have policy agendas and goals, they just seek to disorder the universe by say – proposing to fire in a haphazard way 2 million U.S. government employees, or forcing out top FBI officials, or appointing officials for Senate confirmation to head government agencies that have overtly said they want to dismantle those specific agencies, or by randomly proposing to deport Palestinians from Gaza to Jordan against their will. On today's Emergency Cast, Jane and Jason spontaneously convene to deal with peak disorder and delve into all the interlocking crises, dead catting, plane crashing, impounding, tariff barrier erecting, and AID stopping that has come to a head during Trump's Second Week of his Second Term. In the Ordering the Disorder segment, Jane wonders how much of the world will respond by trying to figure out how to decouple - slowly, gradually, cautiously – from the U.S. because U.S. politics does not exactly seem at its most stable. And Jason muses that Canada, Mexico, the UK and the EU could have chosen to present a united front to Trump, but appear to have elected not to. //The Wire//2300Z January 23, 2025////ROUTINE////BLUF: TRUMP ORDER ON BIRTHRIGHT CITIZENSHIP BLOCKED BY JUDGE. GOVT AGENCIES ATTEMPT TO SUBVERT COMPLIANCE WITH DEI BAN. IMMIGRATION ISSUES CONTINUE NATIONWIDE.// -----BEGIN TEARLINE------International Events-United Kingdom: The sentencing of Southport murderer Axel Rudakubana took place today. He was sentenced to life in prison, with a minimum sentence of 52 years. -HomeFront-Washington D.C. - Hostility to President Trump's initial executive actions is mounting, with Senior U.S. District Judge John Coughenour in Seattle issuing an order to block Trump's order pertaining to birthright citizenship.Following President Trump's orders to dismantle all DEI programs from federal agencies and organizations, many entities (to include military organizations) have been observed to take measures to camouflage DEI positions and programs by simply changing their name, but not actually changing the content of a program or firing any staff.AC: This sneaky move will probably not work in the long run, as the internet has a long memory. The definition of what qualifies as a "DEI" position can be based on what a person was initially hired to do, not what their title was changed to be. As such, a simple name-change won't really slow down counter-DEI efforts that much.USA: Immigration raids continue in many major cities. Approximately 1,500x active duty troops have been deployed to the southern border. A major raid in Boston has entered it's second day, as primarily Haitian illegals are being detained and deported. In Providence, Rhode Island, the law offices of Joseph Molina Flynn were raided, which is a major law firm that is well-known for primarily representing immigrant clients and generally being involved in immigration issues. AC: This raid was likely conducted in conjunction with various human-trafficking operations. Somewhat interestingly, Flynn is both an immigration lawyer, and a municipal court judge in Central Falls. As such, the mayor of Central Falls announced the resignation of Molina Flynn this afternoon.California: This morning a hiker was shot multiple times in Jacumba during a mugging by suspected Cartel members, who are assessed to have crossed the border to conduct extortion operations in the local area. AC: These types of Cartel operations are relatively common, but likely will increase in intensity for the foreseeable future.-----END TEARLINE-----Analyst Comments: Regarding the pardon's issued by the White House prior to President Trump being inaugurated, even more questions have emerged. For instance, Anthony Fauci's pardon has been back-dated to cover any and all crimes he committed since 2014. This has led many to raise the question of what he was doing post-2014 that might require a pardon in the first place. After all, if the previous regime was scared Fauci might be unjustly targeted for his work during COVID, why backdate his pardon all the way back to 2014, during the Obama administration? This has raised more questions than answers, and reignited scrutiny as to how this pardon may be linked to other pardons issued with the same date.Regarding remigration efforts, most ICE raids have only resulted in the arrest of a few hundred illegals, however what is being observed now is likely the rapid action on heavily-populated encampments of illegals that are the low-hanging-fruit. Most likely, larger, more logistically-intensive operations are being stood up right now.Analyst: S2A1Research: https://publish.obsidian.md/s2underground//END REPORT//
This Day in Legal History: Brushaber v. Union Pacific Railroad Co.On January 24, 1916, the United States Supreme Court issued a pivotal decision in Brushaber v. Union Pacific Railroad Co. This case arose after Frank Brushaber, a shareholder of Union Pacific Railroad, filed suit against the company to challenge the federal income tax imposed on its earnings. Brushaber argued that the tax violated the Constitution by not being apportioned among the states in accordance with Article I, Section 9. His challenge directly questioned the recently ratified 16th Amendment, which granted Congress the authority to tax incomes without apportionment. In its ruling, the Supreme Court upheld the constitutionality of the federal income tax. Writing for the majority, Chief Justice Edward Douglass White rejected Brushaber's claims, affirming that the 16th Amendment eliminated the requirement for income taxes to be apportioned among the states. The Court emphasized that the amendment did not create a new power of taxation but clarified Congress's authority to levy such taxes directly. This decision was a turning point in U.S. legal and financial history, solidifying the federal government's ability to collect income taxes as a primary source of revenue. It set the stage for the modern tax system and allowed for the growth of federal programs funded through taxation. By resolving disputes surrounding the 16th Amendment, Brushaber helped ensure the stability of income taxation as a legal and constitutional practice.A federal judge in Seattle has temporarily blocked a controversial executive order issued by President Donald Trump seeking to end birthright citizenship, which is guaranteed under the 14th Amendment. The order, titled “Protecting the Meaning and Value of American Citizenship,” denies citizenship to children born in the United States if their parents lack legal status, are in the country temporarily, or if both parents fail to meet citizenship or residency criteria. This policy would leave thousands of American-born children stateless, without access to federal benefits, or documentation like passports, effectively excluding them from many civic rights and responsibilities.Senior U.S. District Judge John Coughenour declared the order "blatantly unconstitutional," citing the clear language of the 14th Amendment and Supreme Court precedent, such as United States v. Wong Kim Ark (1898), which reaffirmed birthright citizenship regardless of parental status. The executive order, effective February 19, 2025, has drawn multiple lawsuits from states and advocacy groups. Washington Attorney General Nick Brown, joined by Oregon, Illinois, and Arizona, among others, emphasized that the order could deprive an estimated 150,000 children nationally of citizenship annually. This includes 4,000 children in Washington state alone. The order also demands that federal agencies refuse to issue documents recognizing citizenship to these individuals, which state officials argue oversteps presidential authority and contradicts constitutional protections. Plaintiffs highlight significant harm to state-funded healthcare, education, and welfare programs, as federal support for these services is tied to recognized citizenship status. The ruling echoes previous legal challenges to Trump-era policies, such as the blocked travel bans, underscoring judicial limits on executive power in shaping immigration and constitutional rights.Judge in Seattle blocks Trump order on birthright citizenship nationwideUS judge temporarily blocks Trump's order restricting birthright citizenship | ReutersThe U.S. Supreme Court has allowed the government to enforce the Corporate Transparency Act (CTA), requiring millions of businesses to disclose their beneficial ownership to the Treasury Department's Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN). The Court stayed an injunction that had blocked the law's enforcement, enabling the government to proceed while litigation continues in the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals, with oral arguments scheduled for March 25. However, the January 13 filing deadline remains suspended.Justice Neil Gorsuch supported the stay, suggesting the Court resolve the legality of nationwide injunctions in such cases. Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson dissented, arguing the government hadn't demonstrated urgency for immediate implementation. The CTA mandates most U.S. businesses incorporated before 2024—and approximately five million new annual incorporations—to report ownership details, with noncompliance subject to penalties. FinCEN estimates that 32.6 million entities will need to comply, though 10 million have already submitted information voluntarily. The CTA aims to combat financial crimes by curbing the misuse of anonymous shell companies, a measure supported by transparency advocates. Critics, including businesses and advocacy groups, argue the law infringes on constitutional rights. Texas Top Cop Shop Inc., represented by the Center for Individual Rights, has challenged the law's constitutionality. The law's enforcement has been turbulent, with multiple court rulings and delayed deadlines. FinCEN has encouraged voluntary reporting during this period, warning of fines of $500 per day for noncompliance if enforcement resumes. Meanwhile, businesses and advisors have been urged to preemptively file to avoid potential technical issues when mandatory compliance takes effect.Supreme Court Allows Corporate Transparency Act Enforcement (1)President Donald Trump signed an executive order on January 23, 2025, creating a cryptocurrency working group tasked with drafting new regulations and exploring the establishment of a national cryptocurrency stockpile. The order aims to overhaul U.S. digital asset policy, a key promise from Trump's campaign. It protects banking services for crypto companies, bans the creation of central bank digital currencies (CBDCs), and pushes for clear regulatory frameworks for digital assets, including stablecoins. The order also directs the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) to rescind guidance that had imposed high costs on companies safeguarding crypto assets, a move welcomed by the industry. Venture capitalist and former PayPal executive David Sacks was named chair of the working group, which includes leaders from the Treasury Department, SEC, and Commodity Futures Trading Commission. This directive marks a shift from the previous administration's stricter stance on cryptocurrencies, which included lawsuits against major exchanges like Coinbase and Binance for alleged violations of U.S. law. Industry leaders and policymakers applauded the move, viewing it as a significant step toward mainstream adoption of digital assets and the development of consistent regulations. The executive order also mentions evaluating the creation of a digital asset stockpile potentially sourced from cryptocurrencies seized by law enforcement, though details on its implementation remain unclear. Bitcoin's price reached record highs earlier in the week, reflecting investor optimism over Trump's pro-crypto administration.Trump orders crypto working group to draft new regulations, explore national stockpile | ReutersThis week's closing theme is by Johann Christoph Friedrich Bach. Johann Christoph Friedrich Bach (1732–1795), often referred to as the "Bückeburg Bach," was the ninth son of Johann Sebastian Bach and a distinguished composer in his own right. Born in Leipzig, Johann Christoph Friedrich grew up immersed in music under the tutelage of his father, yet he developed a unique style that bridged the Baroque and Classical eras. He spent most of his career at the court of Schaumburg-Lippe in Bückeburg, where he served as Konzertmeister and later as Kapellmeister. His music, characterized by elegance and charm, often reflected the tastes of the emerging Classical period while retaining the counterpoint and depth of his father's influence.Bach composed a variety of works, including symphonies, keyboard pieces, and chamber music, yet his output remains relatively underappreciated compared to his more famous siblings, such as Carl Philipp Emanuel and Wilhelm Friedemann. Johann Christoph Friedrich passed away on January 26, 1795, leaving behind a legacy of compositions that deserve wider recognition. For this week's closing theme, we've chosen his Flute Sonata in D minor, HW VIII/3.1 - I. Allegretto non troppo, arranged for trumpet, cello, and harpsichord. This arrangement brings new energy to Bach's graceful and lyrical lines, blending the interplay of the trumpet's bright tones with the rich warmth of the cello and the intricate textures of the harpsichord. The Allegretto non troppo exemplifies Johann Christoph Friedrich's ability to balance expressive melodies with delicate intricacies, creating music that is both accessible and profound. As we remember his contributions to music on the anniversary of his passing, let this piece inspire reflection on the enduring artistry of the Bach family.Without further ado, Johann Christoph Friedrich Bach's Flute Sonata in D minor, HW VIII/3.1 - I. Allegretto non troppo, enjoy! This is a public episode. If you'd like to discuss this with other subscribers or get access to bonus episodes, visit www.minimumcomp.com/subscribe

It is the “most wonderful time of the year,” and Behind the Lines is focusing on giving back. Section 6 of the Preamble to the Texas Rules of Disciplinary Conduct reminds us that “the provision of free legal services to those unable to pay reasonable fees is the moral obligation of each lawyer as well as the profession generally.” This episode focuses on some of the ways Houston lawyers have been taking that obligation seriously and giving back to people in the Houston area who need legal help. Segment One - Hon. David Hittner: "I Wouldn't Trade That One Trial"Hon. David Hittner, Senior U.S. District Court Judge, discusses a criminal pro bono case he had as a young lawyer, including how he went about preparing for a criminal case as a civil lawyer. He also addresses how this pro bono case played a role in his confirmation hearing when he was appointed to the federal bench. The file for the case, Texas vs. Lockett, was recently formally dedicated for public exhibition at the Historic Documents Room at the Harris County Courthouse. Segment Two - Maryam Ghaffar: "My Client Felt So Validated"Maryam Ghaffar, an associate at Beck Redden and the HYLA Pro Bono and Service Committee Chair, discusses a recent Hague Convention case in which she represented the mother of a two-year-old child whose father wanted the court to order that the child's habitual residence was in Ecuador, not the United States. Maryam was appointed to this pro bono case by the Court, and it was a very fast-paced case. Segment Three - Holiday Wellness Break: Finding the Joy(BTL Interviewer Rinku Ray)Melanie Bragg of Bragg Law PC, who is also the co-chair of HBA's Wellness Committee, author of "Defining Moments: Insights Into the Lawyer's Soul" and other books, and cheerful volunteer, leads listeners through a wellness exercise designed to help find joy and reduce stress during the holiday season. Segment Four - Amy Farish: "There's Always Support"Amy Farish, a partner at Yetter Coleman who is also the firm's pro bono coordinator, discusses a lengthy immigration case she and her team handled and encourages lawyers to try out pro bono service even if it's in an area outside of one's usual wheelhouse. Segment Five - Andrew Lehmann (HVL): "The Legal Issue Was Actually Really Simple"(BTL Interviewer Rachael Thompson)Andrew Lehmann, who runs HVL's weekly Veterans clinics at Michael E. DeBakey VA Hospital, discusses the issues they typically see and how to volunteer, and he shares recent success stories from the clinic, including a tenant's rights case and Military Sexual Trauma claim. He notes that lawyers should not feel intimidated to volunteer at the clinic or even take a case because often the legal issues are simple and the Veterans just need someone to advocate for them using legal skills that almost every lawyer has. John Anthony Castro, a 2024 GOP U.S. Presidential Candidate who notably sued Donald Trump, has been found guilty on all 33 counts related to Federal Tax Fraud. Castro, a frequent guest on The NeoLiberal Round Podcast, had gained attention by suing Trump for violating Section 3 of the 14th Amendment. His legal challenges were discussed extensively on the podcast series “Castro v. Trump,” where he was a key contributor. According to Erin Dooley at the Media Affairs Office at the Texas Department of Justice, in a press release stated that Following a five-day bench trial before Senior U.S. District Judge Terry R Means, he was convicted on all 33 counts of assisting in the preparation of a fraudulent return and was immediately taken into custody” (Press Release by the DOJ on Friday May 24, 2024: https://www.justice.gov/usao-ndtx/pr/mansfield-tax-preparer-convicted-33-counts-tax-fraud-after-bench-trial). Despite his high-profile legal battles, Castro's lawsuits in multiple states were largely dismissed. In January, he filed an appeal in Florida against Judge Eileen Cannon's decision to dismiss his case and sought her recusal from all cases involving Trump, citing bias. Concurrently, Castro faced his own legal troubles, being indicted on Federal Tax Fraud charges. In January 2024, The NeoLiberal Round Podcast released an episode featuring Castro, where he vehemently denied any wrongdoing related to the indictment. He explained the errors leading to the charges and stated that he had taken steps to correct them. Castro expressed confidence in his ability to clear his name and reiterated his commitment to his presidential campaign. On April 16, 2024, Castro provided an update, maintaining his innocence and preparing for his May 20th hearing. He indicated plans to testify and expressed a desire to step away from politics afterward. However, following the hearing, on May 20th, Castro was arrested and taken into custody. The Texas State Department of Justice released details of the ruling, revealing that Castro, owner of the virtual tax preparation business Castro & Company, had falsely inflated client tax returns. Convicted on all 33 counts of assisting in the preparation of fraudulent returns, Castro now faces up to 99 years in federal prison, with each count carrying a potential three-year sentence... DeAnn Parkin, a mother of three from Ovid, Idaho, has been sentenced to more than seven years in prison for attempting to solicit a murder through a satirical "Rent-a-Hitman" website. The sentencing occurred last Thursday in Senior U.S. District Judge B. Lynn Winmill's courtroom, following Parkin's admission of guilt nearly a year after contacting the fake site. Parkin, now 31, confessed to seeking someone to murder a woman living with her ex-husband in Wyoming. Identified only as "L.A.," Parkin accused the woman of having an affair with her husband and causing turmoil in her family due to drug abuse and alleged involvement in prostitution. Rent-A-Hitman is a satirical website that promotes itself as the ultimate solution to targeted problems, dubbing it the "Point and Click Solution" and boasting a claim of being "100% HIPPA compliant" (Hitman Information Privacy and Protection Act of 1964) on its landing page. The site features a section dedicated to customer testimonials, showcasing comments and blurred images for anonymity. One such testimonial from Phil M. of Florida lauds the service, stating, "Guido and his public relations crew at RENT-A-HITMAN were able to resolve a five-year dispute in a matter of days. Highly recommended!" Furthermore, the website offers various discount packages catering to different groups, including seniors, military personnel, and even Walmart associates. Notably, it extends a nod to Joseph Allen Maldonado, famously known as Joe Exotic, with an additional 10% off if customers mention "Cool Cats and Kittens. Parkin's intentions came to light when she reportedly provided her Idaho address and phone number, along with detailed accusations against the target, in an application on the website: “I would like (the intended victim) to stay away from my husband and my family. She has helped ruin our family and broken it up with her drug abuse and her prostitution services. She has ruined her autistic son life and leaves him with strangers along w my husband to take care of him and uses her son to get my husband to come back to her and then get him more hooked on meth so she can go out and do her own thing while breaking other families lives.” “Make her go away where she won't ruin no one's lives no more stops contacting my husband, give her son a better life. She has ruined my family life enough that who knows if it's even possible to be fixed. Take her to another continent or make her disappear completely where no one hears from her again anything to make her go aways for good please and thank you.” Upon receiving this information, the website owner promptly notified the authorities, leading to an official investigation by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), which commenced on May 23. Subsequent exchanges between Parkin and an undercover ATF agent posing as a hitman revealed the plot details. Text messages retrieved from court documents unveiled Parkin's readiness to pay for the execution, her fear of law enforcement intervention, and her indifference to the potential consequences, even expressing a willingness to sacrifice her own life. On May 24, the agent and Parkin spoke on the phone while the agent was secretly recording. During the discussion, Parkin reportedly stated she was “willing to do anything” regarding her problem and that she “did not care if it means her being in a six-foot hole… I'm fine with that.” On June 6, Parkin met with the undercover agent at her workplace in Bear Lake County. During the encounter, Mrs. Parkin reportedly confirmed her resolve to proceed with the plan, expressing a disturbing lack of concern for the well-being of the intended victim and her own son. Following this meeting, Parkin handed over $100 in cash and a diamond ring she claimed was worth $1,500, as a down payment for the hit. She also agreed to pay the remainder in installments. U.S. Attorney Josh Hurwit of the District of Idaho condemned Parkin's actions, labeling them "shocking." He emphasized law enforcement's vigilance in preventing such crimes and vowed to hold violent offenders accountable, regardless of the nature of their criminal conduct. Senior U.S. leaders have once again called on China to use its considerable economic leverage to persuade Iran to change its behavior in the escalating conflict with Israel. Various U.S. have made this same request on several occasions already, going back all the way to the day after Hamas launched its assault on southern Israel on October 7th. Each time, though, those U.S. appeals have largely been ignored by the Chinese. That raises two important questions: why does the U.S. keep asking if nothing happens? And, even if Beijing was willing to do act, would the leadership in Tehran even listen? For some perspective on these two questions, Eric spoke with Iran-China scholar Bill Figueroa, an assistant professor at the University of Groningen, who explained why so many in Washington are misreading just how much influence China actually has in Iran. Senior U.S. leaders have once again called on China to use its considerable economic leverage to persuade Iran to change its behavior in the escalating conflict with Israel.
