The performance of the MAGIC telescopes using deep convolutional neural networks with CTLearn by T. Miener et al. on Wednesday 30 November The Major Atmospheric Gamma Imaging Cherenkov (MAGIC) telescope system is located on the Canary Island of La Palma and inspects the very high-energy (VHE, few tens of GeV and above) gamma-ray sky. MAGIC consists of two imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes (IACTs), which capture images of the air showers originating from the absorption of gamma rays and cosmic rays by the atmosphere, through the detection of Cherenkov photons emitted in the shower. The sensitivity of IACTs to gamma-ray sources is mainly determined by the ability to reconstruct the properties (type, energy, and arrival direction) of the primary particle generating the air shower. The state-of-the-art IACT pipeline for shower reconstruction is based on the parameterization of the shower images by extracting geometric and stereoscopic features and machine learning algorithms like random forest or boosted decision trees. In this contribution, we explore deep convolutional neural networks applied directly to the pixelized images of the camera as a promising method for IACT full-event reconstruction and present the performance of the method on observational data using CTLearn, a package for IACT event reconstruction that exploits deep learning. arXiv: http://arxiv.org/abs/http://arxiv.org/abs/2211.16009v1
Using a Conditional Generative Adversarial Network to Control the Statistical Characteristics of Generated Images for IACT Data Analysis by Julia Dubenskaya et al. on Wednesday 30 November Generative adversarial networks are a promising tool for image generation in the astronomy domain. Of particular interest are conditional generative adversarial networks (cGANs), which allow you to divide images into several classes according to the value of some property of the image, and then specify the required class when generating new images. In the case of images from Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescopes (IACTs), an important property is the total brightness of all image pixels (image size), which is in direct correlation with the energy of primary particles. We used a cGAN technique to generate images similar to whose obtained in the TAIGA-IACT experiment. As a training set, we used a set of two-dimensional images generated using the TAIGA Monte Carlo simulation software. We artificiallly divided the training set into 10 classes, sorting images by size and defining the boundaries of the classes so that the same number of images fall into each class. These classes were used while training our network. The paper shows that for each class, the size distribution of the generated images is close to normal with the mean value located approximately in the middle of the corresponding class. We also show that for the generated images, the total image size distribution obtained by summing the distributions over all classes is close to the original distribution of the training set. The results obtained will be useful for more accurate generation of realistic synthetic images similar to the ones taken by IACTs. arXiv: http://arxiv.org/abs/http://arxiv.org/abs/2211.15807v1

Validation of standardized data formats and tools for ground-level particle-based gamma-ray observatories by A. Albert et al. on Monday 12 September Ground-based gamma-ray astronomy is still a rather young field of research, with strong historical connections to particle physics. This is why most observations are conducted by experiments with proprietary data and analysis software, as it is usual in the particle physics field. However in recent years, this paradigm has been slowly shifting towards the development and use of open-source data formats and tools, driven by upcoming observatories such as the Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA). In this context, a community-driven, shared data format (the gamma-astro-data-format or GADF) and analysis tools such as Gammapy and ctools have been developed. So far these efforts have been led by the IACT community, leaving out other types of ground-based gamma-ray instruments. We aim to show that the data from ground particle arrays, such as the High-Altitude Water Cherenkov (HAWC) observatory, is also compatible with the GADF and can thus be fully analysed using the related tools, in this case Gammapy. We reproduce several published HAWC results using Gammapy and data products compliant with GADF standard. We also illustrate the capabilities of the shared format and tools by producing a joint fit of the Crab spectrum including data from six different gamma-ray experiments. We find excellent agreement with the reference results, a powerful check of both the published results and the tools involved. The data from particle detector arrays such as the HAWC observatory can be adapted to the GADF and thus analysed with Gammapy. A common data format and shared analysis tools allow multi-instrument joint analysis and effective data sharing. Given the complementary nature of pointing and wide-field instruments, this synergy will be distinctly beneficial for the joint scientific exploitation of future observatories such as the Southern Wide-field Gamma-ray Observatory and CTA. arXiv: http://arxiv.org/abs/http://arxiv.org/abs/2203.05937v3
Performance of the upgraded VERITAS Stellar Intensity Interferometer VSII by David B. Kieda et al. on Thursday 08 September The VERITAS Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescope array (IACT) was augmented in 2019 with high-speed focal plane electronics to create a new Stellar Intensity Interferometry (SII) observational capability (VERITAS-SII, or VSII). VSII operates during bright moon periods, providing high angular resolution observations ( < 1 mas) in the B photometric band using idle telescope time. VSII has already demonstrated the ability to measure the diameters of two B stars at 416 nm (Bet CMa and Eps Ori) with < 5% accuracy using relatively short (5 hours) exposures. The VSII instrumentation was recently improved to increase instrumental sensitivity and observational efficiency. This paper describes the upgraded VSII instrumentation and documents the ongoing improvements in VSII sensitivity. The report describes VSII's progress in extending SII measurements to dimmer magnitude stars and improving the VSII angular diameter measurement resolution to better than 1%. arXiv: http://arxiv.org/abs/http://arxiv.org/abs/2209.03453v1

Laurie Dupar has answers! At least once per week I get an email or a post in my membership about medications. Often the questions are posted because ADHD adults are simply not able to get the information they need for themselves and their families. Confusion abounds and people turn to unreliable sources of information - like Facebook groups and other social media. So I asked Laurie, an ADHD coach, and experienced psychiatric nurse practitioner, to sit down with me and discuss some of the questions I hear most frequently. I will produce a written post about this in the future. This is a loooong one. But well worth the listen! We discussed:The lack of ADHD information available to prescribers during their trainingCommon misunderstandings about ADHD in both physicians and pharmacistsThe lack of communication between prescribers and patientsThe real deal on long-term effects, normal side effects, and imagined side effectsStimulants v. non-stimulants, and the development of medicationsHow stimulants work, and how non-stimulants workThe difference between prescription medications and street drugsWhy medications need to be changed/adjusted on an ongoing basis throughout the lifespanPregnancy, breast feeding, menopause and the role of estrogen in ADHDLaurie's iACT center training programLaurie's 5-week Medication CourseSupport the show (https://the-adhd-enclave.mn.co)

What do the flowers say? Ninety-five years have passed since the Reverend Norbert Capek introduced the Flower Communion to his Unitarian congregation in Prague, Czechoslovakia. Much has changed since then, but the Flower Communion continues. What started as a simple exchange of flowers has become a favorite celebration for Unitarian Universalists everywhere. Why has this ceremony thrived? What does it offer us today? Rev. Betty is the affiliated Community Minister at Live Oak Unitarian Universalist Church in Cedar Park, Texas. She leads worship for UU congregations, officiates weddings and other rites of passage, serves on the U Bar U Board of Trustees, and volunteers as a discussion leader with iAct. Her newest project is developing an online liberal religious resource for people who can't participate in a UU congregation.

One of the most important 'messengers' of many high energy phenomena in our universe are gamma-rays. The detection of very high energy (VHE) cosmic gamma-radiation by ground-based Cherenkov telescopes has opened a new window to the Universe, called gamma-ray astronomy. It is a rapidly expanding field with a wealth of new results, particularly during the last two years, due to the high sensitivity of a new generation of instruments. The major scientific objective of gamma-ray astronomy is the understanding of the production, acceleration and reaction mechanisms of very high energy particles in astronomical objects. This is tightly linked to the search for sources of the cosmic rays. The MAGIC (Major Atmospheric Gamma-ray Imaging Cherenkov) telescope is one of the new generation of Imaging Air Cherenkov Telescopes (IACT) for VHE gamma-ray astronomy. With its 17 m diameter mirror the MAGIC telescope is today the largest operating single-dish IACT. It is located on the Canary Island La Palma (28.8 deg. N, $17.8 deg. W, 2200 m asl.). Recently, eight new galactic VHE gamma-ray sources were detected by the HESS collaboration. They have either no or very weak counter-parts in other wavelengths. This makes them ideal candidates for accelerators of hadronic cosmic rays. The Galactic Center was also found to be a source of VHE gamma-rays by various groups. However, the reported spectra differed significantly such that the nature of the source could not yet be identified. In this thesis, observations of three galactic sources of VHE gamma-rays with the MAGIC telescope are discussed: the source at the Galactic Center and two sources in the galactic disc HESS J1813-178 and HESS J1834-087. The positions, extensions, morphologies and the differential fluxes of these sources are presented using the data from the MAGIC telescope, and possible flux variations with time are studied. To identify the gamma-ray production mechanism and the nature of the sources, the gamma-ray sources are related to possible counter-parts in other wavelength bands. For HESS J1813-178, leptonic and hadronic models for the multiwavelength emission are developed and compared to the data to identify the physical processes at work in the source. The source at the Galactic Center is shown to be a stable emitter of VHE gamma-rays, and the implications for the source models are discussed. As these sources are located in the southern sky and can only be observed under large zenith angles with the MAGIC telescope, suitable observation and analysis procedures for large zenith angles had to be developed. In order to achieve the best possible background determination, the sources were observed in the off-source tracking observation mode. To further increase the sensitivity of the MAGIC telescope, new ultra-fast read-out electronics components have been developed as an upgrade project for the MAGIC telescope. The performance of the new system is evaluated based on prototype tests in the MAGIC telescope at La Palma. The production, tests, and installation on the MAGIC telescope of a full-scale read-out system are described.
