Despite a plateau in tourism arrivals, the sector is seeing positive signs. Overseas visitor arrivals were at 3.23 million for the year to September, which is up on the same month last year, but well below 2019's almost 4 million. But Tourism New Zealand CEO Rene de Monchy says international holiday visitors are up 29% on last year. He told Mike Hosking international visitor spending is also on the rise. De Monchy says while visitors are at around 83% of 2019 levels, we're at 100% of the value in the year to June 2024. LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

It might not spring to mind as tourist destination, but Mangere Town centre's manager is hoping the south Auckland hub can offer a unique pacific experience for international visitors as they head to and from the nearby airport. The shiny new Manawa Bay outlet mall has recently opened nearby, boasting 100 shops, big crowds and big traffic jams. But Mangere town centre's manager believes the area's big enough for the both of them, and hopes the new mall will boost activity and bring new visitors into the suburb, Luka Forman has more.
The Tourism Minister's upbeat as international travellers continue to spend more here. The latest International Visitor Survey shows overseas visitors added $2.6 billion to the economy in the June quarter, an annual increase of 17%. It comes a day after the Government's announcement that the International Visitor Levy will rise by almost 200% to $100 from next month. Matt Doocey told Mike Hosking there was no connection between the two announcements. He says tourism operators believe they have better product and experiences, which need to be celebrated. In comparison, Australia had more than 760,000, a 24.1% increase from March last year. Tourism Minister Matt Doocey told Mike Hosking that we're actually tracking pretty well when you look at the figures for the year ending March 2024. He said that we're sitting at about 82% of pre-Covid numbers, which is roughly the same as Australia, and in line with the global rate of 85%. After more than two long years, international tourists are once again allowed into New Zealand. From this morning visitors from around 60 visa-waiver countries, like Australians already, can now travel here without isolation if they are vaccinated and do a pre-departure and arrival test for Covid-19.Tourism Minister Stuart Nash said thousands of passengers were expected to arrive on about 25 flights at Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch international airports in the next stage of the reopening plan."Today marks a milestone for visitors from our key northern hemisphere markets in the USA, UK, Germany, South Korea, Japan, Singapore, Malaysia, Canada and others, who can now jump on a plane to come here."Direct flights arrive today from places like Los Angeles, San Francisco, Kuala Lumpur, Singapore, as well as airports closer to home in Australia, Nadi, and Rarotonga. Many will be connecting flights bringing people from further afield."There were currently just over 30,000 people arriving into the country each week - a significant increase on the trickle throughout the pandemic, but still well down on pre-Covid levels. In January 2020 about 25,000 people were arriving each day.Nash said today's changes would see a further increase in arrivals, and international flight searches to New Zealand were running 19 per cent higher than pre-Covid (March-April 2019).Later this year major international airlines like Emirates, Air Canada, Malaysian Airlines, Hawaiian Airlines, LATAM Airlines and Air Tahiti Nui are restarting routes.Air NZ was also adding long haul routes from San Francisco, Honolulu, Houston, New York and Chicago. The changes also applied to those with existing visitor visas, and join vaccinated Australian visitors, temporary work visa holders, and student visa holders who still meet their visa requirements, who are already able to come to New Zealand.Immigration Minister Kris Faafoi said up to 5000 international students were able to come here for the second semester of the academic year.Over 6000 applications Working Holiday Visas had also been approved since March."They will not only have a great time on holiday here but can work to support our tourism, hospitality and horticultural sectors," Faafoi said.On Sunday the Government announced new, more accurate Covid tests which return results in 30 minutes would be trialled at Auckland Airport.Lamp (loop-mediated isothermal amplification) tests can be self-administered like a RAT (rapid antigen test), but are much more accurate.Air NZ CEO Greg Foran said the airline would "ideally" like Covid-19 testing to be removed from travel."But this [test] is a good insurance policy should we suddenly find ourselves in a different situation in the near term."Foran said the further border reopening was a "big day for us", noting it had been 767 days since New Zealand shut its border to anyone without residency or citizenship in response to the Covid-19 pandemic.Foran said almost 1000 people will arrive on the first three flights, from Los Angeles, San Francisco and Fiji.He said he expected visitor numbers to start seriously increasing in July."I think it's still reasonably early in this. What we've got are a lot of people who are keen to reconnect with family and friends and relatives."We're increasingly seeing businesspeople starting to get out and wanting to reconnect. And my view is that when we get to July school holidays, I think we will see some pretty good travel not only domestically but internationally."Air NZ had recalled about 800 pilots and cabin crew in anticipation of increased travel numbers."We've got quite a bit hiring spree going on at the moment."- by Michael Neilson, NZ HeraldSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Here's what you need to know about the business of travel today.
There's a continual push to get the borders open before October. Covid Response Minister Chris Hipkins has announced there will be a lot of changes in the next few weeks - including MIQ winding down. He says they've always left open the possibility of reopening the border sooner than planned. Tourism Holdings chief executive Grant Webster told Mike Hosking all they want is a firm date on when international visitors can return. “We've got winter and summer coming up when people want to travel and New Zealanders want to get overseas and be able to get back without self-isolation as well so we've got to get moving.” LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Interview with the “Average Mohamed” real name “Mohamed Amin Ahmed”Mark: Not only America but countries in Europe and in most places around the world we have all felt the wrath of The Taliban and their bloodthirsty and horrific murders done in the name of “Islam”.My special guest today is “A Worthy Gentleman”, a Semolina immigrant living in Minnesota. He is married and has four children. He has owned businesses and is now a Manager for a local gas Company.Mohammed has a diverse background that includes supporting the Primary election of a Muslim woman running for Congress. He has also had a speaking engagement at the national conference for Global Ties US in Washington, DC. Today he was speaking to students at Alta Vista High School in South Tucson. Your website is www.averagemohamed.com which he uses to dissuade youth from joining the Taliban by showing them, in cartoon form, what really happens when someone joins the Taliban or other similar organizations. Apparently, the site went viral and has had a huge impact.Mohamed immigrated to the States 20 years ago and has been in both Civic and Corporate Worlds. He understands completely what Terrorism does to world business. At the onset of the 911 Crisis, he joined “The Free Muslim Coalition Against Terrorism” and is still the Chapter President for Minnesota.Mohamed's Counter Terrorism Mantra is “It takes an Idea, to defeat an idea”, which is the Mantra of the organization that passionately promotes ideas of “Counter Terrorism” through the use of popular culture...and that's how “Average Mohamed was born.In view of the fact that these radical Muslims kill people who in the past have created messages through cartoons, ‘Average Mohamed' stories are portrayed in cartoon format all over the web and in particular YouTube. In a Nutshell, www.averagemohamed.com was created to talk plainly to humanity – to all.Issues of race, religion, and “fitting in” affect all of us, especially our youth, so Mohamed's thought - it's time we talk about them. The solution to so many of these issues is simple: dialogue. All-too-often, silence leads to misunderstanding and extreme views.Mohamed waited for a straightforward, logical program that would help youth to understand their unique contribution to society, and appreciate others with different ethnicities, races, and belief systems. Apparently while waiting, and waiting, and waiting, it dawned on him that an average guy can spark these dialogues. If it is an average guy who espouses hate, intolerance, and extremism, all of us average folks need to speak up and challenge this narrative. A fairly logical perspective to the topic!Mohamed says, "our goal is to give average parents, kids and clergy talking points to counter falsehood propagated by extremists, racists and others who promote intolerance. We hope to share love of country, culture, and democracy with children across the world."The organization that brought Mohammed to Tucson is the Southern Arizona Council for International Visitors, under the leadership of the Executive Director for SAZCIV, Pat Watson. SAZCIV is a non -profit that brings quality speakers on relevant subject matter to the community every two months The Core purpose for SAZCIV is the International Visitor Leadership Program which emanates from the Education and Cultural Affairs Division of the Department of State.
