Editors - Brett W. Bachman, ACE and Josh Ethier, ACE Long time friends, but first time co-editors, Brett and Josh are no strangers to working in the horror/thriller genre. The same can't be said for COMPANION director Drew Hancock. Not only was this film Hancock's first feature as a director, but it was also his first real foray into genre filmmaking. But that didn't stop either Brett or Josh from seeing how good this film was going to be right from the script. What they couldn't predict, was how great a working experience the whole thing would be. Written and directed by Drew Hancock, COMPANION stars Sophie Thatcher and Jack Quaid as a couple on a weekend getaway with friends at a remote cabin that unravels into violence amid revelations that one of the guests is what's known as a companion robot. BRETT W. BACHMAN, ACE Brett W. Bachman, ACE, is an editor of film & television with acclaimed titles such as Mandy, Pig, & The Fall of the House of Usher. He has worked with leading voices in genre film, such as Panos Cosmatos, Mike Flanagan, Josh Ruben, and Elijah Wood. Several of his feature films have premiered at renowned international festivals, including Sundance, TIFF, SXSW, and Cannes. He's also brought his talents to the small screen with numerous television and commercial projects. Recent & upcoming titles include: Companion, a thriller from writer/director Drew Hancock and New Line Cinema, Rabbit Trap starring Dev Patel, and Heart Eyes, a romcom-slasher hybrid from director Josh Ruben. Additional titles include Werewolves Within, Color Out of Space, The Toxic Avenger, The Vigil, Cooties, and many more. Bachman found his love of editing in his formative years, developing a passion for storytelling through three self-produced documentaries when he was just 19. At 22 years old, he was one of the youngest members of his AFI Conservatory editing program. Since then, he's nurtured his love of filmmaking with an array of eclectic projects as an Editor, Associate Producer, and Executive Producer JOSH ETHIER, ACE Josh Ethier is a renowned Los Angeles based film editor who has left a lasting mark on the horror, thriller and action genres; he literally wears his passion for the genres on his sleeve. His works have premiered at esteemed film festivals such as the Toronto International Film Festival, Sundance Film Festival, SXSW, Tribeca Film Festival, Beyond Fest and Fantastic Fest. Ethier is most well known for his frequent collaborations with director Joe Begos, with whom he has crafted a unique, LOUD and impactful cinematic style. Their partnership has resulted in several acclaimed films, including "Bliss," a psychedelic horror film that explores the descent of an artist into madness; "VFW," a gritty, action-packed thriller about war veterans defending their local VFW post from a drug-addled gang; and most recently, "Christmas Bloody Christmas," a festive yet terrifying holiday horror film that's streaming on Shudder. These collaborations have resonated with audiences and critics alike, showcasing Ethier's ability to enhance Begos' visionary storytelling through his editing. Ethier's impressive filmography includes notable titles such as Oz Perkins' "Gretel & Hansel" for Orion Pictures and MGM, a dark reimagining of the classic fairy tale; William Brent Bell's "Orphan: First Kill," the prequel to the cult horror favorite for Paramount Pictures; Henry Dunham's "The Standoff at Sparrow Creek," a tense, dialogue-driven thriller about a mass shooting at a police funeral; and "Mayhem," a high-octane action horror film starring Steven Yeun that highlights his versatility as an editor of action and comedy. In 2021, Ethier's contributions to film editing were formally recognized when he was invited to join American Cinema Editors (ACE), an honor that signifies his standing in the industry amongst his peers. His career is marked by a commitment to excellence and a passion for storytelling, making him one of the most respected and sought-after editors in independent genre cinema. When we realized we were going to have the chance to record another in-person episode during one of Sydney's LA visits, we knew we had to choose our movie with care — but we're not sure Brahms: The Boy II (2020) met us with the same love. Though its predecessor was one of our most hotly-debated episodes way back in Season 1, we knew the sequel would be best enjoyed together, and it seemed like a perfect fit for Mommy Issues May. Unfortunately, it turns out we might be the ones with the issues. On our latest episode of Spooky Tuesday, we're heading back to the Heelshire estate to hang out with Brahms, but whether or not this is the same little boy/doll we once knew is very much up for discussion.References: https://www.utdailybeacon.com/city_news/brahms-the-boy-ii-is-predictable-unnecessary-confusing-for-fans-of-the-first-movie/article_92f7981e-55af-11ea-982e-879e26cb8766.htmlhttps://www.thewrap.com/brahms-the-boy-ii-film-review-katie-holmes/Alternate Ending: https://youtu.be/GMRydAPigBs?si=aErcWQWhoFeEVeJG

When the director of some of the juiciest modern horror films came to us with Ferris Bueller as his "feeling seen" pick, we were surprised and intrigued. John Hughes' fun-loving and beloved (except by the principal) truant, as played by Matthew Broderick, is the ultimate main character. And while William Brent Bell might not crave the spotlight, he has a surprising amount in common with young Ferris. Then, Jordan has one quick thing about books from the authors who we've had on the show this year: Manuel Betancourt (THE MALE GAZED), Anna Bogutskaya (UNLIKEABLE FEMALE CHARACTERS), Kyle Turner (THE QUEER FILM GUIDE), Malachi Moore (HAUNTED REELS).LORD OF MISRULE is available in Theaters and On Demand on Dec 8, 2023.New FEELING SEEN Merch!***"All of us who do creative work, we get into it because we have good taste. But there is this gap. For the first couple years you make stuff, it's just not that good. It's trying to be. It has potential. But your taste -- your taste is still killer. And your taste is why your work disappoints you. A lot of people never get past this phase. They quit. Most people I know who do interesting creative work went through years of this. Our work doesn't have this special thing that we want it to have. We all go through this." - Ira Glass***With Jordan Crucchiola and William Brent Bell

THANKS TO ANDREW FOR MAKING THE INTRO SONG. (soundcloud.com / andoryukesuta)@andoryukesuta Stay Alive is a 2006 American supernatural horror film directed by William Brent Bell, who co-wrote it with Matthew Peterman. The film was produced by Joseph McGinty Nichol, and released on March 24, 2006 in the United States. It was the first film released by Hollywood Pictures after five years of inactivity. After playing a video game titled Stay Alive, Loomis Crowley, his roommate Rex, and Rex's girlfriend Sarah are killed the same way as their characters were killed in the game. At Loomis' funeral, his friend Hutch meets Abigail – a friend of Sarah – and receives some of Loomis' possessions, including Stay Alive. Hutch, his girlfriend October, and her brother Phineus decide to play the game as a group. They are joined by Abigail and another friend, Swink, while Hutch's boss Miller plays online from his office. The game is set in a derelict mansion on Gerouge Plantation, but it only starts when the six players recite "The Prayer of Elizabeth," a request for "all who resist" to perish so that their blood can keep the Countess Elizabeth Bathory young. The players fight through a cemetery of evil ghost children, heading toward a mausoleum and tower. Miller is directed by the game to pick up a rose. October, a reader of occult literature, explains that undead spirits cannot move across wild roses. Separated from the others, Miller throws the rose to dispel the spirits of undead girls. Since he is now out of roses, a woman in a red dress, the Countess, kills Miller's character. Minutes later, the Countess appears in Miller's office and kills him by stabbing him with conjoined scissor blades like the ones in the game. Two detectives, Thibodeaux and King, question Hutch about the homicides. Hutch realizes that Loomis and Miller played Stay Alive right before they died, and that they died the same way as their game characters did. October researches Bathory and learns she would drain young women of blood, bathing in it to maintain her youth. Her weakness was mirrors because she could not stand to see herself growing old. Phineus decides to play alone, and despite quitting the game before his character can die, he is killed in real life when he is run over by a horse-drawn carriage. The survivors agree to stop playing Stay Alive. However, Detective King ignores Swink's warning and plays until his character dies. King is then killed in his car. Hutch and Abigail search Loomis' house and learn of the game developer's location: the real Gerouge Plantation. October has discovered that the real Countess Bathory was locked in the tower of her estate as punishment for her gruesome acts and vowed to return one day for revenge, which she is now able to do, as The Prayer of Elizabeth has resurrected her. The Countess can only be killed by driving three nails into her body to trap her soul. October sees the Countess in real life and tries to kill her but realizes that she is a ghost. She has her throat slit by the Countess. The three survivors realize that once the game has begun, it can play by itself. Swink stays in a van and plays the game on his laptop to distract Bathory, while Hutch and Abigail search Gerouge Plantation.

The 2009 film ORPHAN was an unexpected success. With both critics and moviegoers alike, the movie received favorable notice by most. When it was announced that the new film OPHAN: FIRST KILL (2022) had arrived at theaters (and streaming), people were a bit surprised because not only was it a follow up film, but it was a prequel as well. The actress that starred in the original film, Isabelle Fuhrman, was now a 25 year old woman so how could she play the role now. So how could a prequel work and what was it's plot? Tricia (Julia Stiles) and Allen (Rossif Sutherland) are still trying to survive the disappearance of their daughter years ago. When suddenly a diplomatic envoy lets them know that Esther (Isabelle Fuhrman) had been found, she comes back to live with them in their wealthy Connecticut suburb. Tricia begins to suspect that Esther may not be who she is, and as the mystery of Esther's past becomes the focus for Tricia, things begin to spiral out of control. OPHAN: FIRST KILL was directed by William Brent Bell based off a screenplay by David Coggeshall. Isabelle Fuhrman returns in the role that she made iconic over a decade ago. Critics were positive with this follow movie and gave it remarkably unexpected positive thoughts. Dark Discussions takes a look at this new film and gives their thoughts.
September 3rd, 2022 was National Cinema Day and we celebrated by seeing the new horror movie Orphan: First Kill. The theater was packed as everyone was pumped to see the prequel to the 2009 film Orphan. It somehow stars the same actress Isabelle Fuhrman as Esther, along with Julia Stiles, Rossif Sutherland (son of Donald), and Hiro Kanagawa as a hard-charging detective. This horror movie was directed by William Brent Bell and written by David Coggeshall, and was shot in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. Were we scared? Were we knocked out by the twist? We'll let you know as we celebrate cinema in movie theaters!
Much like disposable tupperware, Orphan: First Kill rebels against the idea of a one-use premise. It ends up being the latest entry in the "meh" cinematic universe (MCU). https://youtu.be/mCa51cjcDNE Artwork by Dustin Goebel. Follow @dgoebel00 on instagram. Synopsis Orphan First Kill is a prequel to 2009's Orphan, that starred, then 10 year old Isabelle Fuhrman. Now a fully grown adult woman, she is reprising her role as Esther, a thirty something year old psychopathic proportional dwarf posing as an 8-9 year old girl. In this film, we are shown how Esther escapes an Estonian mental facility and poses as an American family's lost daughter. As time goes on, the family has more questions about Esther, and Esther has more questions about the family. Hjinks ensue. https://youtu.be/_uX6of3vBu0 Orphan: First Kill Trailer Review of Orphan: First Kill This is not a good movie, it's not a bad movie, it's meh. The film is directed by William Brent Bell, who directed The Boy and The Boy 2, which should set your expectations squarely in the Meh cinematic universe. I do applaud the plotting of the film, it unlocks the puzzle of how to reuse a one use premise. Here's the elephant in the room. Isabelle Fuhrman is not 10 years old any more. No matter the amount of camera angles and the de-aging they use, she still looks like a full grown woman. It doesn't detract from the film nearly as much as you would expect, but it is a bizarre choice nonetheless. Would you film a Home Alone Prequel with a fully grown Macaulay Culkin? The saving grace of the film is the twist around the middle of the film. It does add an interesting dynamic, and saves it from being a true rehash. Overall, you get what you expect. A little psychopath that kills a lot of people. Score 5/10 Orphan: First Kill Add it to your collection or rent it now.Click here to buy

While Development Hell usually unearths horror movies that never got made, occasionally we unpack how indie films actually make it to the finish line. We do this by picking the brains of some of the most exciting voices in horror. Today host Josh Korngut logs on with filmmaker Willam Brent Bell to discuss his new film ORPHAN: FIRST KILL. A prequel to the 2009 Dark Castle Entertainment horror classic ORPHAN, Bell's new film stars Julia Stiles and Isabelle Furhman. In the film, "Esther's terrifying saga continues in this thrilling prequel to the original and shocking horror hit Orphan. After orchestrating a brilliant escape from an Estonian psychiatric facility, Esther travels to America by impersonating the missing daughter of a wealthy family. Yet, an unexpected twist arises that pits her against a mother who will protect her family from the murderous 'child' at any cost."You can watch ORPHAN FIRST KILL through limited theatrical release, video on demand, and on Paramount+, on August 19, 2022.Follow William Brent Bell on Twitter. This week we're so excited to be joined by writer/director William Brent Bell! He's the filmmaker behind movies like Stay Alive and The Boy and his latest film Orphan: First Kill is the prequel to the cult classic camp masterpiece Orphan! We talk about his horror history, approaching this prequel with trepidation (and death threats?!) and ultimately falling in love with the surprising story. Stick to the end where he talks about two of his upcoming horror creations which sound fantastic. Then we dig into The Other (1972), a film that seems relatively forgotten but needs to be discussed and championed as a precursor to a ton of horror tropes. We discuss evil twins, its legacy, the fantastic direction from To Kill A Mockingbird's Robert Mulligan, Uta Hagen, the queer screenwriter, some of the horrific imagery and so much more. This is one of the most messed up PG rated movies ever.Follow William Brent Bell on Twitter and Instagram. "The Devil Inside", "Stay Alive", "The Boy", "Brahms: The Boy II", "Wer", "Separation" and the upcoming prequel, "Orphan: First Kill" are all directed by my guest on Episode 245 of The Brooklyn Blast Furnace Podcast, William Brent Bell. We had a super cool, laid back conversation about his previous movies, working on "Orphan: First Kill" and his new movie which is in post-production called "Lord of Misrule". I wanted to talk about the movie "Wer", which is criminally underrated and not very well known, well, now I know the reasoning behind that. Working on "The Boy" with Lauren Cohen and the "slow burn" approach he takes with a lot of his films. The concept behind his movie "Separation" was born from an odd place, a movie we both loved as a kid. A very personable, down to earth guy who is simply a fan of movies and carved his own path. I hope you enjoy this one because he'll be back when "Orphan: First Kill" gets released. Respect. PUBLIC VERSION. Filmmaker William Brent Bell (THE DEVIL INSIDE, STAY ALIVE, THE BOY) joins Adam, Joe, and Arwen to discuss his career journey. From getting hip pocketed by an agent at ICM off of his first short film… to focusing on writing the kinds of movies he wanted to see without the safety net of a fallback… to the joy of making his first major script sale (SPARKLE AND CHARM) right when things were seeming their most dire… to making STAY ALIVE with McG… to the real story behind the polarizing ending to THE DEVIL INSIDE… to finishing his latest (SEPARATION - in theaters now!) and shooting his next (ORPHAN: FIRST KILL) during the pandemic… William shares some absolutely incredible tales from the trenches! Dr. Arwen and the boys weigh in on Amazon Prime turning in to a new form of YouTube, Adam laments over Prime streaming censored versions of the HATCHET films without indicating so, and William teaches everyone a lesson in humility with how gracefully and professionally he reflects back on hurdles that could easily have soured most artists. A lonely young woman, ten terrifying rules, and one disgusting doll. Talk about a recipe for disaster. Directed by William Brent Bell, “The Boy” was yet another 2016 film ravaged by critics, but is held in our own personal regard as nothing short of a cult classic. With a creaking old house owned by a passive elderly couple, what could go wrong? A lot. Who lies behind the mask?(And… why is he hot?)

Vegas Film Critic (Jeffrey K. Howard) reviews Brahms: The Boy II.
We saw Brahms: The Boy II in theaters and it was so bland and unfulfilling that I questioned whether or not I want to spend my free time reviewing movies of this caliber. As soon as I asked that question of myself, I realized that the answer is obviously - yes. I need to watch these boring hunks of junk to make sure you don’t have to. Intro - (0:45)Trailer - (4:16) Synopsis - (06:40) Review - (10:19) Score - (10:44) Spoilers - (17:10) Final Recommendations - (48:50) Horror Movie News with Ben Warrington - (50:08) Outro - (1:03:07) @dgoebel00 on instagram provided this amazing artwork. Follow him and check out his website. https://youtu.be/ytxEldPKnyA Synopsis The Boy II is a stand-alone sequel to the somewhat more interesting movie, The Boyfrom 2016, which you can currently watch on Amazon for $3.99. It was directed by William Brent Bell, who has been directing horror movies like The Devil Inside, and the original The Boyfrom 2016. This is the story of a family of three, Liza (Katie Holmes), Sean (Owain Yeoman), and their son Jude (Christopher Convery) that escape to the countryside to heal after a burglary gone wrong at their house in London. Watch Brahms: The Boy IIPre-order on AmazonClick here to Watch Jude, the young son stops talking following the attack, and when the family shows up at the guest house on the Heelshire estate (where the original The Boy took place) he finds a doll buried in the woods. The doll and Jude share a lot in common: not talking, staring blankly at whoever addresses them, generally being boring, and desiring to kill whole families. Through a notepad that Jude uses to communicate, we learn that the doll is named Brahms, and he has a bunch of rules for the family to follow. You would be surprised how stringent these rules are, so they are broken often and the family is thrown into an uproar each time. Eventually, we find out that Brahms is more doll than this family bargained for. Review Brahms: The Boy II is a sincerely boring movie that does everything technically correct on paper. Casting, acting, pacing, direction - it’s all passable. The end result is boring as sin, though. At least movies like Fantasy Island are so zany that they are fun in an ironic way. Brahms: The Boy II bored me to tears and I don’t believe that you should ever watch it. Score 3/10 Spoilers Click to Expand for Brahms: The Boy II Spoilers As I write this I am bored to tears at the prospect of having to relive the minutiae of The Boy II, but here it goes. Jude is Mute The burglary/attack on Liza and Jude really did a number on them, and Jude ends up going mute. Great, now we have to hear two nagging parents dote on their child throughout this already tedious script. Jude going mute is supposed to add to the spook factor of the whole thing by making us relate to the parent's further challenge of reaching their troubled child. Instead, Jude having to write out his every response adds padding to an already slim movie. Jude not talking also helps to draw a closer parallel with him and Brahms, the doll. By the end of the movie, Jude is dressing, doing his hair, and wearing a mask that makes him look just like the doll Look exciting? Right, it's not. The Brahms Doll MORE: Click Here for our blog about some of the most deadly horror movie dolls Brahms is truly one of the most uninspired and generic horror movie dolls that I’ve ever seen. He has no hook, nothing that makes him interesting at all. What are Brahms origins? There was once a boy on the Heelshire Estate that killed his family. His soul got into his doll. That’s it. The End Brahms: The Boy II ends in the least satisfying way it possibly could have – a history lesson. The groundskeeper tells the family about the backstory of the doll and gives us a bit of a montage of the destruction the boy doll caused.

Brad and Sean dig into Arrow Video's fantastic Killer Dames box set to discuss THE NIGHT EVELYN CAME OUT OF THE GRAVE and THE RED QUEEN KILLS SEVEN TIMES. Both films (directed by Emilio P. Miraglia) were released in 1972 and finally receive the treatment they deserve! Also discussed is William Brent Bell's (Stay Alive, Wer) newest film THE BOY, which was (in our opinion) unfairly shat upon critically when it was released.
Welcome the newest episode of Dark Discussions, your place for the discussion of horror film, fiction, and all that’s fantastic. We last heard from director William Brent Bell and screenwriter Matthew Peterman with the January 2012 release of the horror film The Devil Inside. With a trailer that got a lot of buzz, the film was highly anticipated. Though not well received by critics and with an ending that left many viewers baffled (the now infamous go-to-the-internet "for more information on the ongoing investigation"), the found footage film produced for $1M USD earned a phenomenal profit of $101.8M USD. Their follow up film continues the latest trend of werewolf movies that have been appearing within the horror genre. Wer, released in the states in September 2014, stars actress A.J. Cook and actor Simon Quarterman. The story takes place in France where an American family is brutally murdered. The suspect that is arrested is a first generation Romanian. His international team of defendants begins to believe that both xenophobia and his family's highly desirable property may actually be the reason for his arrest and possible framing. But soon a more bizarre reality begins to form out of all the confusion. Co-host Eric of Dark Discussions found the film on video on demand and decided to give it a viewing. What he discovered was an interesting new take on the monster we all know as the werewolf. Being a newer film, the podcast crew all rented the movie and the episode was born. Was Wer a sleeper that was missed in 2014? How does it stack up to the classics as well as the various newer lycanthropic films? Check out what your hosts have to say. A ação estilo Temperatura Máxima The Cold Light of Day, de Mabrouk El Mechri. A fantasia Espelho, Espelho Meu, de Tarsem Singh (Estréia aqui no Brasil em 06/04). A ficção-científica chuta-bundas Lockout, de James Mather e Stephen St. Leger. O drama extremamente interessante The Hunter, de Daniel Nettheim. Confira tudo isso no nosso On Demand. Feliz ano novo, caro ouvinte! Já começamos 2012 quebrando a última promessa de 2011. Coisa feia, hein? A vinheta do terror The Devil Inside, de William Brent Bell. Coisinha leve para sentir o "drama" do filme. O esperadíssimo The Cabin In The Woods, de Drew Goddard.
O terror (de casa mal-assombrada) The Woman in Black, de James Watkins.
