Stan talks to historian Jacqueline Jones about her book, No Right to An Honest Living: The Struggles of Boston’s Black Workers in the Civil War Era, winner of the 2024 Pulitzer Prize in History.
Historian and author Jacqueline Jones joins Daniel Ford on the show to discuss her Pulitzer Prize-winning book No Right to an Honest Living: The Struggles of Boston's Black Workers in the Civil War Era. Writer's Bone is proudly sponsored by Chelsea Devantez and her upcoming book I Shouldn't Be Telling You This: (But I'm Going to Anyway), Libro.fm, and Everyday Shakespeare.
In this episode Dr. Hettie V. Williams interviews Dr. Jacqueline Jones about her Pulitzer Prize winning book No Right to an Honest Living: The Struggle of Boston's Black Workers (Basic Books, 2023). Williams is the current director of the William Monroe Trotter Institute for the Study of Black Culture at UMass Boston and Jones is Professor Emerita; Ellen C. Temple Chair in Women's History and Mastin Gentry White Professor of Southern History at the University of Texas, Austin. Jones is also the author of several award-winning books including Labor of Love, Labor of Sorrow: Black Women, Work and the Family from Slavery to the Present (Basic Books, 1985). Labor of Love won the Bancroft Prize in 1986. She is also the winner of enumerable other awards including a MacArthur Fellowship (1999-2004) and served as president of the American Historical Association (AHA). This episode focuses on her book No Right to an Honest Living and the quest for equity waged by African Americans in nineteenth century Boston. In this book, she highlights the struggle for Black equality waged by everyday Black workers before, during and after the American Civil War. Jones argues that though Boston has long been seen as a cradle of liberty Black workers were kept from enjoying full equality particularly in the arena of work. #BlackBoston #BlackinBostonandBeyond #PulitzerPrizeHistory #BlackWorkers
In this episode, we discuss How to Embrace Holistic Healing through Art Therapy and Feng Shui as Jacqueline shares each stepping stone of her practice and how it continues to evolve. Jacqueline went through a journey of stepping stones, each with unique and individual sets of wisdom that she now combines beautifully into her overall practice. She started with art education, eventually adding Yoga, Reiki, Art Therapy, and Feng Shui as a wholesome blend of holistic healing practices. She shares how Art Therapy led her into deeper practices and understanding of how interconnected intergenerational trauma can be in one's environment and habits. Jacqueline speaks on her findings of people she's served, from children to veterans who all benefit from the therapeutic practices she's combined. Through her work, she discovered that she could only do so much from a therapist's perspective and often this would send her clients back home to an unsupportive or imbalanced environment. This is where Feng Shui came in, Jacqueline started studying Feng Shui through Amanda's International Feng Shui School and discovered that she was able to help her clients set up their homes for personal success too! This combined with Art Therapy allowed her to guide her clients to explore their creativity more, which allowed them to be more in tune with the colors, artwork, and flow of the home itself. The interconnection of Art Therapy and Feng Shui mainly took the form of repatterning old programs of environment, where she found her clients all had habits, perhaps formed from childhood and others formed through adulthood that often created a negative cycle. Now, she can provide them with repatterning tools like decluttering, healing from within, Art Therapy practices, or taking time to meditate or reflect through art that then guides them to breaking negative cycles. A beautiful part of this episode for me was as we started diving deeper into generational trauma, Jacqueline expressed how much wisdom is buried deep within our roots. As we start unpacking trauma and releasing what does not serve us, we also keep emotional reminders and keepsakes within our consciousness as pearls of wisdom. Sometimes it's on what you'd rather want to break the cycle of, other times it's areas in which you'd want to improve for the next generation. Through her Art Therapy and holistic healing modalities, she's found ways to restore, rebuild and release with her clients, and teach them grounding techniques for their continued healing. Toward the end of the episode, Jacqueline shares her tips on how to use Yoga, meditation, Art Therapy, Feng Shui, reflection, and everyday rituals to create an environment supportive of holistic healing. If you're on the path of holistic healing, or you have an interest in Art Therapy or Feng Shui, then this is the podcast for you. Like me, so many of my students, including Jacqueline, started out learning from various cultures and modalities like Yoga, Reiki, Pilates, and Meditation and started incorporating Feng Shui and other holistic healing practices into their tool kit. When you're on the path of a holistic healer then you'll find that one modality always fits into another. That is why when I speak of Feng Shui, I always say that it pairs and interconnects with all the other holistic healing functions. Are you ready to expand on your holistic healing journey or upgrade your services? Join Jacqueline and many other students on their path as holistic healers and register for my FREE Feng Shui mini-course or my Feng Shui Master Certification Course, where you will learn a holistic blend of Feng Shui to incorporate with your existing or future services. But as author and historian Jacqueline Jones points out in her new book, "No Right To An Honest Living: The Struggles of Boston's Black Workers in the Civil War Era," while the city didn't practice slavery after that point, it didn't practice equality either.

About Jacqueline Jones and Crystal Eikcaj Skin & Hair Care Products: Jacqueline Jones, or Jackie (eikcaJ), is the fourth of nine siblings. She grew up extremely poor in the lower eastside of Detroit known as “Black Bottom.” She and her siblings were bullied by kids and adults because they did not have nice clothing and lived in a run-down home. Jackie's dad worked in the foundry inhaling black dust all day long. Her mother stayed home and raised the children. After paying the bills to keep a roof over their heads, there was very little left over for food. Many days Jackie and her siblings went to bed hungry. Jackie was educated in the Detroit public school system. After graduation, she was determined not to let her past define her future. Jackie pursued her education while working full-time and obtained an associate's degree, bachelor's degree, and master's degree. She was the first sibling in her family to achieve this success. Jackie has always been determined to be an entrepreneur. Over the years, she has had several successful businesses. In 1997, Jackie was diagnosed with many health issues and most recently diabetes in 2012. The symptoms associated with her illnesses resulted in hair loss, extremely dry skin, arthritis, etc. Initially, Jackie tried using prescription and over-the-counter medications to address these symptoms. However, these medications caused side effects and rarely produced any substantial results. Instead of complaining, Jackie decided to find solutions to her health challenges. Out of necessity, she experimented with organic shea butters, essential and natural oils to grow her hair and gain relief from extremely dry feet, hands, and body. The results that she achieved were outstanding. Her hair began to grow back and the moisture in her skin was restored without any harmful side effects. Jackie soon realized that she could help others without using harmful chemicals. To accomplish this, she created "Crystal Eikcaj™ Skin and Hair Care, LLC, (CESCH). Today Crystal Eikcaj™ enjoys customers of all ages, genders, ethnicities, and socio-economic backgrounds. Crystal Eikcaj™ features skin and hair care organic products that can be used by anyone who desires to moisturize their skin (i.e. face, hands, body, and feet) and pamper their hair with organic products. Jackie continues to create new products and her motto is "Good products are created based on the people that they are for.”

The award-winning author Jacqueline Jones is the Ellen C. Temple Chair in Women's History at the University of Texas. Goddess of Anarchy: The Life and Times of Lucy Parsons, American Radical (Basic Books, 2017) is a biography of the riveting life of Lucy Parsons. As an activist, writer and speaker, Parsons embodied the most radical expression of the battle for labor rights in American history, yet her life remains a mystery. Born an enslaved woman in 1851 of mixed lineage, the circumstances of her birth and early life are unknown. Exceedingly beautiful and articulate, she met and married Albert Parsons, a confederate army veteran, in Waco, Texas in 1872. Their politics shifted from loyal Republicans to socialism and finally to anarchism advocating for white labor in Chicago. As a dynamic and radical duo engaged in extensive writing, charismatic speaking and alliances across multiple labor organizations, they became symbols of unrelenting agitation against industrial capitalism. Their call for armed resistance and involvement with the Haymarket bombing and trial, led to the execution of Albert leaving Lucy Parsons to carry their mutual legacy alone. Jones has brought to life an enigmatic figure whose compelling presence left a mark on the history of the radical movement for labor rights. Lilian Calles Barger, www.lilianbarger.com, is a cultural, intellectual and gender historian. Her current book project is entitled The World Come of Age: An Intellectual History of Liberation Theology, forthcoming in August, 2018 from Oxford University Press. Learn more about your ad choices.
