Send us a Text Message.Javier tells going from small bust operations in Austin, Texas to ending up on the case of Pablo Escobar in Colombia. Out of the academy he was hoping for a bigger city but ended up in Austin. After applying to go to Mexico, he was given Colombia. The eye-opening experience of dealing with Pablo Escobar who was hiding drugs in fruit and humans which we ended up on one of the biggest cases in the world!Javier knew Pablo very well from all the studying he did such as his informants, family, drug movements, money, etc. He explains Narco Terrorism and the extent of how Pablo would get people to kill for him by buying them houses and providing for their families. Pablo placed bounties on police officers of $100 for each one killed. In 1989 Escobar put a bomb on a commercial airline to kill a presidential candidate that killed 109 innocent people, a bus with dynamite in front of a building killed more, and the one that made him Enemy #1 in the world was he killed the presidential candidate at his rally. Extradition was eventually signed, which was the green light for Javier and his team. Was there an order to kill Escobar? His self-surrender with his own penthouse prison and how he was later found after the DEA found his frequency that resulted in his killing by the Colombian National Police. Pablo's motto was that he preferred a tomb in Colombia versus a jail cell in the United States. Javier said he was probably worth more than $30 Billion at the time of his death! Welcome back everybody to the conclusion of my interview with my special guest, Retired ATF Deputy Assistant Director, former NYPD homicide detective, and author of the bestselling book, The Deadly Path: How Operation Fast & Furious and Bad Lawyers Armed Mexican Cartels, Peter Forcelli. If you like heroes, homicide, government corruption at the highest levels, a government whistle blower, and good old fashioned police work, you're going to love this episode. Peter was a "whistleblower," who came forward and testified in the congressional inquiry into the "Operation Fast & Furious" scandal, following the death of Border Patrol Agent Brian Terry.Over the span of his career, Peter Forcelli served in leadership positions within ATF in Phoenix, Arizona; Eastern Canada; Miami, Florida and in ATF Headquarters. While serving as the Special Agent in Charge of the Miami Field Division, he oversaw ATF's response to several mass shootings, including those at the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport, and Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, in Parkland Florida. He also oversaw ATF's investigation into Omar Mateen and his acquisition of the firearms that were used in the Pulse Nightclub shooting.Peter Forcelli has also been involved in the exoneration of eight people who were wrongfully arrested and convicted in the Bronx, New York, for murders that they did not commit.Peter is a survivor of the 9/11 Terrorist Attacks on the World Trade Center, and the lung cancer that he later developed because of his work in the rescue and recovery efforts at Ground Zero. He is a recurring guest speaker at the 9/11 Memorial and Museum.Like any cop, sometimes we need backup. So, my good friend, Retired DEA Special Agent Steve Murphy of the Game of Crimes podcast and DEA Narcos, joined me for this interview. The ongoing catastrophe at our southern border and what can be done about it.· The personal and professional damage caused to Peter, and his family, by him being a whistleblower.· Red flags that point to dysfunction in law enforcement agencies – resulting in larger issues for leadership – and how to resolve them?· Mass shootings in the United States and what should have been done to prevent them, and how we can prevent more of them happening.· How some federal prosecutors continue to not charge criminals for violating federal firearms laws – and other crimes – and what can be done to remedy the problem.· Are ‘tough gun laws' actually solving any problems?Visit Peter on his website!Check out DEA Narcos with Steve MurphyCheck out Field Training (Brew City Blues Book 1)!!Enjoy the Cops and Writers book series. Please visit the Cops and Writers website. With me today are the two real-life DEA agents whose work is chronicled in the hit Netflix series Narcos. Steve Murphy and Javier Pena were both assigned by the DEA to work in Medellin, Colombia with the task of taking down Pablo Escobar. They were directly responsible in large part for the ultimate success of that operation. While there, both of these guys did their jobs with the spectre of six-figure bounties on their respective heads. Needless to say, this is one of the most badass accomplishments by any men within the last forty years, for sure. But these days, both Steve and Javier are retired after 38 years of service each, and you won't believe how down-to-earth and easy-going they are. It's like I've always observed, when real men accomplish great things they typically don't act as if they have anything to prove...because they don't. Experiencing how these guys carry themselves and hearing their insane stories is reason enough to tune in to this amazing episode, but the pure gold is mined when the topic du jour is covered in earnest. I brought up a direct quote from the Narcos series: 'Sometimes you gotta do bad things to catch bad people.' I was both amazed and thrilled to find that neither of my guests had ever been asked about that, so you're in for a world exclusive from the quintessential experts on the subject. What do men of character do when good seems to be the enemy of best? How does a man embrace his dark side when there's really no other choice? You'll love the discussion. On to the show with Steven Murphy & Javier Pena. Colombian drug lord Pablo Escobar’s brutal Medellín Cartel was responsible for trafficking tons of cocaine to North America and Europe in the 1980s and ’90s. The nation became a warzone as his Sicarios mercilessly murdered thousands of people - competitors, police, and civilians - to ensure he remained Colombia’s reigning kingpin. With billions in personal income, Pablo Escobar bought off politicians and lawmen, and became a hero to poorer communities by building houses and sports centers. He was nearly untouchable despite the efforts of the Colombian National Police to bring him to justice. But Escobar was also one of America’s most wanted, and the Drug Enforcement Administration was determined to see him pay for his crimes. Agents Steve Murphy and Javier F. Peña were assigned to the Bloque de Búsqueda, the joint Colombian-US taskforce created to end Escobar’s reign of terror. For 18 months, between July 1992 and December 1993, Steve and Javier lived and worked beside Colombian authorities, finding themselves in the crosshairs of Sicarios targeting them for the $300,000 bounty Escobar placed on each of their heads. Undeterred, they risked the dangers, relentlessly and ruthlessly separating the drug lord from his resources and allies, and tearing apart his empire, leaving him underground and on the run from enemies on both sides of the law. Their book, Manhunters, presents Steve and Javier’s history in law enforcement from their rigorous physical training and their early DEA assignments in Miami and Austin to the Escobar mission in Medellin, Colombia - living far from home and serving as frontline soldiers in the never ending war on drugs that continues to devastate America. This is the real story from the actual DEA Agents portrayed in the HIT NETFLIX SERIES NARCOS You can find Steven, Javier and their amazing book Manhunters – How we took down Pablo Escobar here: https://www.deanarcos.com/ Stay tuned for more great episodes on The CJEvolution Podcast www.cjevolution.com Patrick

Welcome to part two of our dialogue with the real DEA Narcos Javier Peña and Steve Murphy. These are the two real American heroes who partnered with Colombian Law Enforcement to take down the world’s 1st Narco Terrorist, Pablo Escobar, and their story is the basis for the Netflix smash hit Narcos. In this second episode, you hear the conclusion of how Murph and Javier bring Escobar to justice. We also dig into their thoughts on leadership, management, and life. The End of Pablo Escobar In this riveting conversation, we hear about how Murph and Javier bring Pablo Escobar to his end. They were honest enough to say it was a story of revenge, especially thinking about how many innocent people were killed, some are personal friends of the two . Javier further recounted what transpired the moment Pablo got out of prison in 1991. They had a bounty of 5 million USD to take him down. Eventually, through the initiatives of the Columbian National Police, Pablo Escobar faced his death. “If you watch the show Narcos, the part that I was on the roof when Pablo was killed, that’s not true, that’s Hollywood. That night, we were expecting retaliation attacks because of the death of Pablo. It was the quietest night I have even spent. I mean, there was nothing. It was quiet. The next day, Javier was back in the country.” - Steve Murphy Narcos Netflix Series Javier and Murph, in all of their appearances, wants to get the record straight that the Columbian National Police was the one who took down Pablo Escobar. The two also share how some of the scenes in Narcos were made dramatic. There were a lot of fictional events that were added to the stories to appeal to the audiences. It was surely effective because the show was embraced not only in the US but in Europe, Australia, Asia and even in Latin America. “The writers, directors are phenomenal. They are extremely intelligent. When I get to the writer’s room at Hollywood to work with them, they had a library of books there. I thought I knew everything about Escobar and the cartel, they had books that I never even heard of.” Javier Pena On Leadership and More Javier and Murph had some interesting thoughts on life, leadership and more. For instance, Javier shared the importance of going on the field and listening to the field men who report their surveillance first hand. “When I retired, one of my men says, ‘Boss, I respected you because you went on the field with us’ even though I’m in the background.” Javier Pena To hear more about the real DEA narcos Javier Pena and Steve Murphy, download and listen to this episode. Welcome to our super, special two-part dialogue with the real DEA Narcos Javier Peña and Steve Murphy. In this first episode, they take us behind the scenes of how they came together, from the US to Columbia, and worked for six years, to get Pablo Escobar. We learn, what it feels like to have a $300,000 bounty on your head and how they dealt with the emotional ups and downs of this long-term, often very lonely and of course extraordinarily dangerous mission. Street Deals to Cartels Javier and Steve are two real American heroes who partnered with Colombian Law Enforcement to take down the world’s 1st Narco Terrorist, Pablo Escobar. Their story is actually the basis for the Netflix smash hit Narcos. Javier recounts how he used to work in Austin Texas, where he runs after street dealers. From street buys to surveillance, he never expected he will be sent to Columbia. It has been months before their superiors transferred them to handle the cartels and Pablo Escobar. “Pablo Escobar is one of the richest traffickers in the world. He built his empire on terrorism, on violence and its something we had never seen before. This is why we weren’t really ready when we started going after Escobar, cause we had never seen this type of tactics before.” - Javier Peña Narcoterrorism Javier and Steve recounted this different kind of terrorism that promulgated in Columbia. Pablo Escobar had orchestrated car bombs, which ranged from 10-15 a day which slowly escalated to 50 per day. “He wanted to kill as many innocent people as he could because this was his fight against Columbia. We try to explain that he challenged his country and we like to say that he actually won.” Steve Murphy He also had a bounty on the head of police officers. In fact, the DEA agents caught a 15-year old hitman who shot 10 police officers. The kid took home 100 USD per police officer he kills and he was able to feed and provide shelter to his impoverished family. More on this episode Listen to how Murph and Javier had to bend and break the rules and why they think the courage of the Colombian people and why they think their partners in Colombian Law Enforcement ate the “real heroes.” You’re also going to hear in their voices, the powerful bond, and friendship that has developed between them. In part two, you’ll hear the dramatic conclusion of how they ultimately brought Escobar to justice. We also dig into their life and leadership lessons. We touch on their book, Manhunters and their lives today as public speakers and teachers. To hear more about the real DEA narcos Javier Pena and Steve Murphy, download and listen to this episode.
