David Gillespie Speaks On The Harmful Effects That Sugar Has On Our Bodies

Our guest for today believes that sugar is the real culprit of human health. David Gillespie is a lawyer and the best-selling author of Sweet Poison, a book published in 2008 about how we are all poisoning ourselves with sugar. That book is generally credited with starting the current wave of sugar awareness in Australia. He followed up Sweet Poison with four more books about nutrition and diet. Then, having upset the dietetics industry by writing about stuff in which he has no qualifications, he turned his focus to something else he is unqualified to write about, education.David talks about how he got into the research on human health, the research on the effects of sugar by The London School of Nutrition, why companies add sugar in every foodstuff, and where we can draw the line when eating sucrose and fructose. He also shares some insights on the relationship between stress and addiction, how abandoning sugar in the diet made a difference in his life and the false narrative about fats.David reminds us that sugar is harmful to our health, especially fructose which is half the content of sugar we consume. Fructose is metabolized differently than other forms of sugar by the body and goes directly to your liver, where it gets converted into fat. That's why fructose causes obesity and elevated triglycerides in your blood.Topics we cover and where to find them:[00:00] Intro[02:28] David Gillespie's background information[06:19] How David got into the research on human health[09:18] The evidence on the effects of sugar [13:45] Why companies add sugar to every foodstuff[18:49] Where we can draw the line when consuming sucrose and fructose[24:00] The false narrative around fats[26:00] The difference with USA labels[28:15] Fruits and how they are metabolized[31:49] How abandoning sugar made a difference in David's life[35:40] Advice to people struggling with addiction[39:48] Takeaways from the book: Brain Reset[45:49] The relationship between stress and addictionLike this show? Matt shares his wisdom and experience during races to master his mindset and ‘wear blinkers' to what everyone else is doing and focus on his own performance. He has endured ups and downs when it comes to social media and being in the public eye.
