The Nats topped the Braves 8-5 on Sunday afternoon to end the weekend with three consecutive victories. Mark & Al discuss the Nationals second series win over Atlanta in just the past few weeks. (05:00) Keibert Ruiz had a big day as he hit a 3 run homer and knocked in four runs. Ruiz's home run was part of a seven run inning for Washington in the bottom of the 4th while facing a rookie pitcher (Hurston Waldrep). (16:00) DJ Herz had a short outing and Mark analyzes what he has seen from the lefty so far. Before the game it was announced that Patrick Corbin's next start was pushed back a few days and won't pitch in Detroit. Is this a sign that he is on way from being out of the rotation? (23:00) Kyle Finnegan was unexpectedly needed to record the final three outs as Jordan Weems struggled with a six run lead in the final inning. Weems had a bad homestand and his ERA for the year is at 7.13. (29:00) Sean Doolittle was elevated for the weekend as the pitching coach Jim Hickey was away. Will the positive press that Doolittle is garnering lead to him getting other job offers after the season? Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices
The Texas Rangers won their 1st World Series title to officially bring on the MLB's off-season. Al & Mark begin with a quick recap of the successful Podcast Party last month at Walter's. Thanks to all who came! (04:00) The Nationals announced that weeknight evening games will begin 20 minutes earlier at 6:45pm. This seems to be a way to encourage more fans to be able to stay for the final few innings, but what about those who don't get off work until around 6:30pm? (11:30) Roll call and analysis of the new members of the Nats Front Office. This includes the new senior director of amateur scouting, Brad Ciolek, who joins the organization after a successful tenure in Baltimore. (25:00) There also was some movement among the coaching staff that includes Gerardo Parra replacing Eric Young Jr. as 1st Base Coach. Darnell Coles was retained as Hitting Coach and Jim Hickey will also return as Pitching Coach. How much of these changes are simply about money? (39:20) Now that teams can no longer keep players on the IL, Stephen Strasburg is back on franchise's 40 man roster. Is this headed to a resolution this Winter? (45:00) Texas won it all just two years after losing over 100 games. Arizona meanwhile made the World Series with only 84 victories as the final Wild Card team. (50:00) A tribute to Frank Howard, one of the greatest hitters in the history of Washington Baseball. Howard passed away at age 87 and had many prolific offensive season while playing for the Senators in the late 60's/ early 70's. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

The Nats won the rubber match in Atlanta 3-1 for their third victory in the past four days. Mark (live from Truist Park) and Al open the discussion with praise for Josiah Gray, who tossed five scoreless innings. What was working for Gray in the outing?(10:46) The top bullpen arms then stepped up for the final twelve outs to give Gray his first W of the season (Finnegan, Doolittle, Cishek , and Rainey). Do the Nationals actually have themselves a solid back-end of the 'pen?(17:24) The offense jumped out on Max Fried with two runs for a lead they wouldn't relinquish. Maikel Franco had two more hits and Josh Bell extended his hitting streak to seven games. However, Alcides Escobar has already struck out nine times, which makes us wonder if the team might soon explore other options at SS.(28:33) We read a listener submitted email about Patrick Corbin and any potential fixes Jim Hickey can provide? Plus, email us in a voice memo recalling your first ever baseball game to natschatpodcast@gmail.com.

I went to the Cubs Convention this weekend, and finally we've been given some good stuff to talk about! There was no surprise Jake Arrieta or Yu Darvish announcement, but it was still a good time. First, I discuss Kyle Hendricks and a cool interview I did with him on Friday night at the media social event. I even tossed in a clip from that interview where Hendricks admitted that he's aware of the "Stoic Hendricks Meme" that has become popular among fans.In the second segment, I went into the interview I did with Jim Hickey (for a story you can read here). Hickey talked about his philosophy on pitching, his thoughts on the Cubs bullpen last season and their second half command problems, and what Cubs fans should expect to see with their most underrated signing: Steve Cishek. Finally, I gave my take on Tom Ricketts' Sammy Sosa comments and gave a rundown of the rest of the cool stuff I saw at the convention. Randi Barry shares with us some more personal stories from her time on the water. We start off talking about the derision many of us outdoors folk tend to receive in social media when sharing our hobby, which transitions into a story about Randi's own foray into the farmed fish industry. We talk a little about some of Randi's most memorable fishing stories, and circle back to talking about some of the amazing features available within the Drophook app. On a personal note, it was really nice to hear Randi quote some of our friend Jim Hickey's comments from previous episodes of the show. Listen in as we wrap up our chat with one of the nicest and friendliest folks in the industry, and jam a bit about ideas for the future of fishing based mobile apps. Jim Hickey is one interesting fella. At times during our talk, I was amused to find him steering the conversation as much as I. It's unusual for a host to be steered by the guest, but it was a good dynamic and one I quite enjoyed. You fine people reading this benefit from this interaction. Jim and I get into a "real" fishing conversation; for two people, largely strangers, the banter is open and honest takes on how we both approach fishing, and our observations spanning numerous topics. Join us for part 2 with Jim Hickey where we meander through topics like big water, smallmouth bass in rivers, light tackle versus heavy gear, and even a few fishing anecdotes. You're sure to learn something over the course of our conversation; I can tell you I did! When I first started looking for people in the fishing industry to follow on Twitter, it didn't take long to find @BassFishnTips. For quite some time I followed this Twitter account, and I found my self again and again reading the articles that were shared; some, I had already read, but many I had not. I wondered to myself "Who has the kind of time it takes to read and share this much information?" Well, I was fortunate enough to befriend this person, and meet the man behind the curtain: Jim Hickey. And as it turns out, the man himself owns a wealth of knowledge and opinion on the sport we love, and fortunately he doesn't mind sharing it. Listen in to this very casual chat with Jim; I sure had a lot of fun talking with him, and at times, he is as much interviewing me as I interviewing him.
