Mike Dillon is a percussionist, vibraphonist, bandleader, singer-songwriter, and vocalist born in San Antonio Texas. He is a member of Critters Buggins, Les Claypool's Fancy Band, and Garage A Trois. He has performed with many musicians including Ani DiFranco, Galactic, Brave Combo, Karl Denson's Tiny Universe, Marco Benevento, Clutch, Claude Coleman Jr., and New Orleans musicians Kevin O'Day, Johnny Vidacovich, James  Singleton, and Ricky Lee Jones. Mike Dillon & Punkadelick makes its recorded debut with Inflorescence, an album of heady, instrumental rock highlighting a band deep in the throes of creative freedom, road tested and wild. Consisting of 10 tracks in 42-minutes, it's an expansive, focused and fearless collection, representing a world where Duke Ellington and Augustus Pablo rub shoulders with crate-digger exotica, the freak-funk of Parliament and the ‘anything fits' outsider ethos of acid-fried punks like The Meat Puppets. A trio featuring Mike Dillon (Ricki Lee Jones, Ani DiFranco, Les Claypool) on vibraphone, marimba, Prophet 6, congas, and bongos, Brian Haas (Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey) on Fender Rhodes, piano, bass Moog and melodica and Nikki Glaspie (Beyonce) on drums, cymbals and vocals, Punkadelick is the unified vision of six hands creating a world that often sounds like the work of an ensemble three times the size. During 2020 and 2021, while many music venues were still shuttered, the group began touring, sweating their way through cuts Dillon and Haas had composed during quarantine writing sessions. Locking in on stage, it quickly became clear the band was functioning at a level that made the hair on their arms stand at attention—even for three live music veterans accustomed to life on the road.   July 27th Mike and Punkadelick are playing the Grog shop in Cleveland OH tickets here! https://grogshop.gs/event-details/13536034/mike-dillon-punkadelic-hello-3d-c-level/   Mike's Info https://www.mikedillonvibes.com/

Mike Dillon's decades-long career as a vibraphonist, percussionist, and drummer has included work with Ani DiFranco, Les Claypool, Stanton Moore, Rikki Lee Jones, and many others. He has also led bands in his own right, the latest of which is Punkadelick, with Brian Haas on keys and Nikki Glaspie on drums. Their new record is called Inflorescence. When not on the road, Mike splits his time between New Orleans and Kansas City. In this episode, Mike talks about: His new trio, Punkadelick with Brian Haas on kers and Nikki Glaspie on drums Finding his place at North Texas as a percussionist rather than a drumset player Committing to mastering the blues and jazz harmony in the improvisatory context The influence of Johnny Vidacovich as an improvisor How the scenes of Kansas City and New Orleans have shaped him How his wife, visual artist Peregrine Honig, has influenced his art and creative process

A negative thing that happens (on the bandstand) is that you get in the way of what music “could happen.” I try to stay out of the way and allow whatever’s about to come through to come through. The other magic that happens is with other players on the bandstand. You have to have a connection with those people, and they all basically have to be looking for the same kind of revelations. That’s what I find with Astral Project, we’re all very trusting on the bandstand. All the great bands have trust between the players and that’s why certain things happen. Johnny Vidacovich is a great example because his mantra is “making whatever’s on the band stand sound as good as it can be.” As a drummer he can really control that, and he can really control that in any genre, that’s the amazing thing about him. If it’s a country and western gig, he’s going to bring it to a higher level. If it’s the highest level of the jazz gig, he’s going to go there too. I try to bring that to what I do as well. It’s an ongoing process The longer you play the more consistency you have, but even within that there’s highs and lows, even with the best musicians. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/jake-feinberg/support

“Elvin Jones is vitamins. You gotta have Elvin Jones at least once a day.”   Johnny Vidacovich has been playing music for more than six decades. He is a jazz drummer from New Orleans, Louisiana and you can still find him at the Maple Leaf on any given Thursday night. He has been involved in many classic recordings throughout the years including James Booker’s “Classified”, Professor Longhair’s “Crawfish Fiesta”, John Scofield’s “Flat Out”, among countless others. Given the fact that Johnny has grown up and lived in New Orleans his entire life, he has the second line, syncopated New Orleans sound coursing through his veins. He is a highly respected instructor as well. A couple of his students over the years are none other than Stanton Moore and Brian Blade. It is safe to say that Johnny Vidacovich is one of the greats.   Episode Outline   Johnny takes us back to his humble beginnings with Dunc’s Honky Tonk band that he played with when he was a young boy. Johnny shares his thoughts on how he feels the music industry is today compared to how it used to be. Johnny reflects on his long term working relationship with the great pianist Mose Allison. Several years ago before Johnny was going to set out on a six-week world tour came down with a condition in his hand called “Trigger Thumb”. Johnny shares how he worked around this and his thoughts when it first happened. The Maple Leaf is a club that Johnny has played at for many years. He shares how much that place means to him. Johnny’s wife, Deborah, looks after the back end stuff for Johnny. He talks about how much she has helped him over the years.   Why Should You Listen?   Well, because Johnny is a legend. To understand what second line drumming is, you must listen to Johnny’s work. To understand what he values as an artist, this episode will lead you closer to that. He has a lifetime’s worth of experience with music and to get an opportunity to hear what it means to him to be a musician is heartwarming. This is an interview that I felt that I needed to capture for the sake of history. I prepared a great deal for this one so that we can hear Johnny’s life story, which is fascinating, to say the least.   The title of this episode is “A Concerned Mother” because you can hear directly from Johnny how concerned he is about the state of the industry. And…well he is a mother (which is a term of endearment towards a high-level player…) I just left the last part of it out. But you catch my drift right?   This episode will capture your imagination in what times were like for Johnny and how truly humble it all has been. It has always been about the music for Johnny and to hear that in this episode is such a great reminder for so many of us.   Music Used in This Episode   “Deb’s Garden” - Vidacovich   Johnny’s Socials   Instagram Website   Drumeo Gab’s Socials   Instagram Facebook

There are few musicians who, although strongly associated with a particular instrument, transcend that instrument to exhibit an overall musicality. It’s not about technique, proficiency or virtuosity -- It’s about serving the song as the music pours out of every pore of his or her body. Jaco Pastorious was such a musician – the man who changed the role of the bass and the way it’s played. Tied to that iconic sunburst Fender jazz that he personally defretted, Jaco went beyond the bass – he was the music. Johnny Vidacovich, today’s guest on Contraption, is that same kind of musician. An incredible drummer in the tradition of New Orleans hitters like Zigaboo, Herlin Riley and Stanton Moore, Johnny goes beyond the drums to infuse every set and song he plays with that rare musicality that touches those he plays with and those he plays for. Johnny credits growing up in New Orleans and hearing the sounds and beats of the bands that passed his modest childhood home. It began, he says, during his infancy, before he could walk or read. It’s part of his DNA – part of his very soul.  You’d think someone as gifted and talented as Johnny Vidacovich had set out his whole life to be a working musician, but he was working as a drummer without really thinking about it as a career – that was until his daughter was born when he was 31. The truth of the matter is Johnny has worked hard – very hard – for his legendary reputation. Taking lessons with New Orleans drummer Charlie Suchor after getting his first drum kit when he was twelve, that eventually led him to a life changing offer as a high schooler… It should be noted that Johnny was happy to talk with us – he loves to share his story and his ideas related to playing – to be a musician. So all I can say is I’m humbled and honored and so appreciative to have had this time with Johnny to share with all of you.

My guest today is Mr. Johnny Vidacovich-  In a town that is filled with great drummers, all with their own unique style and approach, Johnny Vidacovich easily qualifies as an institution in the New Orleans music scene. His career spans 5 decades and he's played with a who's who of New orleans music royalty- Danny Barker, Professor Longhair, James Booker, Johnny Adams,  Astral Project, and many many others- as well as those from outside of New Orleans who have relied on Johnny's signature street beat grooves - John Scofield, Joe Sample, Charlie Hunter and the list goes on and on.  He has also taught many students including Brian Blade and Stanton Moore.  Johnny is such a great person to chat with, and as you can hear in the interview he is highly animated and super passionate about life and music. He frequently gets up to dance or move his body in a certain way to illustrate a point. He is a highly musical drummer and one of my favorites- a real poet on the drums.  As you'll hear in the interview, I first met Johnny when I moved back to New Orleans. We went on to work together here and there throughout the years recording and doing some gigs from time to time….one highlight I remember is getting to do a gig with both Johnny AND Idris Mohammed- that was fun! If you like the music in this podcast check out Johnny's solo works- Mystery Street, Banks Street, Vidacovich and my solo record The Grease Factor. In the interview Johnny talks about singing what you play, phrasing, the music scene in  1950's and 60's New orleans, we go over some traditional New Orleans grooves together, his poetry, love of Paul Motian (sorry for mispronouncing his name over and over !), play a few tunes, how colors relate to sound and music and much more.  Hidden behind one of the more unique and quirky personalities that is Johnny Vidacovich is a treasure trove of wisdom learned from a lifetime of playing and teaching.  This interview took place at Johnny's house in the Mid City section of New orleans, LA in Feb of 2016.                                                                                                                                I hope you enjoy!Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/the-riff-raff-with-shane-theriot/donationsAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

My guest today is Mr. George Porter Jr. George is best known for being the bassist for the “architects of funk” - The Meters, the funkiest band to ever come out of New Orleans and, for that matter, anywhere. His basslines get under your skin and won't let go. Along with Zigaboo Modeliste on drums, Art Neville on keys and Leo Nocentelli on guitar, The Meters invented a type of funk that has been widely copied (and sampled) for many years now.  The day this interview took place I was back in New Orleans recording on a couple of projects, and we just happened to be on one session together. I've known George for years and I mentioned how I started this podcast and wanted to interview him while I was in town for a few days. Knowing I was short on time, George graciously suggested that we do it that night after the session.  In the interview I ask George about his influences, what he looks for in a drummer, trivial questions on various Meters folklore, why Paul McCartney said George was his favorite bass player, Allen Toussaint sessions, the proper way to play “Cissy Strut”, unison guitar/bass lines, etc…OH…and we play a lot of stuff together. Hope you enjoy.  Recorded at the Parlor Studio, New Orleans, LA - Feb 2016. On a session- L to R- Shane Theriot (guitar), George Porter Jr. (bass), Johnny Vidacovich (drums) and Sonny Landreth (slide guitar) Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/the-riff-raff-with-shane-theriot/donationsAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

Hey everyone, welcome to my new podcast- The Riff-Raff with Shane Theriot.   The Riff -Raff started as an idea I had a few years ago just to sit and chat with my friends whom I consider to be inspirational to me in some way- whether it be as a musician, artist or whatever the case may be…. over the years as a working musician I've been lucky to work with many amazing people and musicians and would like to share some of their stories with you.  Who am I? I'm a professional musician.  I like stories…. Luckily I get to work with some of the best in the business and they happen to have great stories. Anyway, I wanted to put these little anecdotes and insights into a format for people to enjoy…it's fun. (Some people like to garden, or take photos, or collect magnets for the fridge..etc..)…Me? I like to get these stories down for all to enjoy! So this is a podcast about the creative process and yes, being a guitar player we do occasionally talk shop, gear etc…but I'm not going to limit it to that as I get this thing going. Oh yeah,,, and we jam a bit too!  I've got some other great musicians coming up in the next month or so…John Scofield, Mike Stern, George Porter Jr. (from the Meters) and Johnny Vidacovich, Leni Stern and many others......so if you like this one- much more to come!!  FIRST UP ON THE LIST- Mr. John Oates   I decided to get The Riff-Raff off the ground right where I stood at that moment… which was on the road with Daryl Hall and John Oates- John Oates as you probably know already if you are listening to this…..is one half of the legendary duo Daryl Hall and John Oates- the biggest selling pop duo in history and a recent rock and roll hall of famer. He's done way more interviews in his life than I can imagine so he's a natural at it -and really easy to talk to. John is a great guitar player, something that I feel he doesn't get enough credit for… I met John after I got a call to play on his solo record Good Road to Follow which I strongly suggest you check out. I was also lucky enough to get to work on his live DVD called Another Good Road that you may have seen on Palladia or VH1- which is a really great showcase of John's songwriting and guitar playing abilities…. John is one of the good guys in the music biz and has become a close friend in the past 2 years.   this interview took place inside John's room at the Historic Hotel Bethlehem in Bethlehem PA. In it we talk Hall and Oates, inspiration, how he comes up with song ideas, guitars, pedals and some great stories from the road (wait til you hear about the giant star!) and yes, we even jam on a little ditty called Maneater. It's my first interview and I hope you enjoy it-  Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/the-riff-raff-with-shane-theriot/donationsAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

The renowned bassist, along with fellow Meters Art Neville, Leo Nocentelli, and Zigaboo Modeliste defined New Orleans funk and R'n'B from the late 1960s on. From the explosion of classics like "Cissy Strut" and "Hey Pocky A-Way" for Allen Toussaint's label, to session work with Dr. John, LaBelle, Paul McCartney, and Robert Palmer, the Meters are the gold standard. George has gone on to work with a stellar list of artists including David Byrne, Tori Amos, and John Scofield, as well as all-star groups the 7 Walkers, Voice of the Wetlands, and his own Runnin' Pardners. He survived the 75-76 Rolling Stones. The Troubled Men should be a piece of cake.
