Tickets here!  PODCAST PROMO CODE FOR %50 off: citybetween It is rare to hear the whole truth about New York City’s role in the Revolutionary War. It’s embarrassing. It’s problematic. It’s mostly forgotten—and for good reason. Even when it is mentioned by the occasional tour guide or random sign, it is still glossed over, finessed, and given the best possible spin, which isn’t much. The truth is that many, many New Yorkers supported the losing side. They didn’t necessarily approve of the way things had been going in the colony, but definitely didn’t want a revolution… and they were prepared to give everything to stop it. Join Bruce for a walking tour on Sunday, August 25 (just days before the 1776 Battle of Brooklyn Anniversary) through lower Manhattan of the Revolutionary War--from the Loyalist perspective: an Anti-Revolutionary War Tour.  It will tell the story of those who signed up to fight against Washington and the Rebels, of those who hoped for change through other means, of those who found their freedom by siding with the British. We will also tell the story of New York’s role as the as the Headquarters for British forces for the seven long years of the War and as the center of Loyalist support in America. We will walk through lower Manhattan and talk about the sites and people and stories from this often untold or hurried-over perspective and understand how precarious and precious the eventual rebel victory actually was.

The relationship between culture and security is an important one and one that is discussed a lot. Unfortunately, many people miss the point somewhat when exploring culture and security. The obvious place to start is the security culture within an organisation, but let’s not dismiss organisational culture too quickly. Better still, let’s also take a look at industry culture and national culture. So you see, when we start looking at culture and security, there’s more to it than we might initially assume. So we thought this would make an excellent podcast episode. Today, Bruce is joined by Gert Jan Hofstede. Gert Jan is a population biologist and social scientist hailing from the Netherlands whose research and publications have provided many with deeper understanding in the areas of cultural evolution, societal change, cultural stability, and how those forces interact with and have influence upon one another. He is also known for his work in social simulation as well as for a number of books he has co-written with his father, Geert Hofstede. In this episode, Bruce and Gert Jan discuss a wide variety of organization and culture-related topics that have important implications for the Cyber Security industry. “It is as if you were a fish and they asked you to describe the air… If you’ve always lived in one place in the world, then it’s very hard for you to see that behaviors from another place that seem strange, illegal, ridiculous… that those behaviors can make sense, but within a larger [cultural] system.” Join Bruce and Gert Jan in this episode of Re-thinking the Human Factor as they explore: How awareness of cultural differences (or lack thereof) can be an opportunity for greater collaboration between groups, or greater friction, and how this awareness contributes to one’s ability to understand and effectively communicate cross-culturally The need for organizations to achieve a sense of mutual cultural understanding as the starting place for implementing organizational change rather than striving to achieve cultural homogenization as the means for implementing that change Different perceptions of what cultural differences mean to an organization (barrier to progress, a catalyst for a breakthrough, etc.), and the importance of realizing that these differences do exist so that one can begin to try and understand them as a means of navigating the challenges and growth potential afforded by these differences The importance that “cultural ambassadors” within an organization be, first and foremost, acceptable to the cultural audience whom they seek to address 4 helpful cultural metaphors to help with navigating cross-cultural organizational communication: The Family (Asia and Africa) The Machine (Germanic/Northern Italy type of region) The Market (Anglo-Saxon, the UK and North America) The Pyramid (the Mediterranean and Slavic countries) MORE ABOUT GERT JAN HOFSTEDE, HIS BOOKS, AND HIS RESEARCH: Associate Professor at the Information Technology Group at Wageningen University & Research // Population biologist and social scientist in information management and social simulation // Interested in the interplay of the contrasting forces of cultural evolution, societal change and cultural stability. Understanding the impact of technology on behaviour is one of the biggest questions we must ask ourselves today. Technology is advancing so quickly and we are seeing human behaviour adapt very rapidly. A glance on a train platform during peak hour will hint at people's obsession with their smartphone. Or, just watch a two-year-old use an iPad with ease if you have any doubts. So it seems right to explore this in more detail as cybersecurity professionals need to get their heads around the effect of technology on behaviour and what that means in terms of developing sound and effective information security strategies. A conversation with Ciaran McMahon, Director at Institute of Cyber Security In this episode, Bruce explores this with Ciaran McMahaon, Director at the Institute of Cyber Security and they discuss how advances in technology have impacted people's behaviour. Award-winning academic psychologist Ciaran McMahon joins Bruce Hallas in episode 5 of Re-thinking the Human Factor. Hailing from the Republic of Ireland, Ciaran comes from a psychology background and has extensively studied how advancements in technology, throughout human history to the present day, have affected societal behaviours. He shares our belief that understanding the human side of things is necessary to effectively influence information security behaviours within an organisation, and he is eager to bring his psychological insights to the problems we face in cybersecurity awareness, behaviour, and culture. “It’s unlikely that we can use all of this technology and not be changed in some way…” The effect of technology on behaviour Join Bruce and Ciaran in this episode as they explore: The impact on people’s behaviour of changes in technology and what that means for designing security environments and choices in cyber security awareness and policy implementation How people justify their behaviour and choices not to comply with security best practise including deterrence, punishment vs reward, neutralization, the defence of necessity, and others. Robert has been focused throughout his career on policy generation, awareness and education, and as part of that, designing policy so the odds are stacked in favour of those who comply with that policy.  Why behavioural economics and psychology is relevant to education and awareness programs Join Bruce and Robert in this episode as they each draw from a well of extensive experience to converse around: Fast and slow thinking and how each influences how we behave in society The importance of integrating behavioural economics and psychology and choice-architecture when it comes to the design of EFFECTIVE education and awareness strategies and programs The “uncomfortable truth” that people do not respond rationally when given data and how recognizing that truth is key to guiding policy creation and choice architecture efforts How cultural differences in the cybersecurity space have more to do with digital literacy, age, principles and values rather than one’s passport, or “passport culture”, as Robert refers to it The role of culture or the context within people live their lives, and how that may have an effect upon: the policy itself how you raise awareness within institutions or even nation-states, as in Robert’s experience The importance of international cooperation in efforts to raise awareness and influence behaviour "It's the human factor that makes us vulnerable." EPISODE 03 SUMMARY - JOHN POLLACK Author // Consultant // Speechwriter // Journalist // Reporter ———————————————— What is needed within cyber security industry communications to generate the kind of awareness and training materials that enable governments, businesses, and the general public to protect themselves against cyber security threats? We want people to hear our message and act in accordance with responsible security behaviours, but what changes do we as an industry need to make in order to accomplish this goal? Join Bruce and John as they converse around these questions and unpack topics such as: John was a strolling violinist at a restaurant where the head chef taught him that people eat twice, once with their eyes and once with their stomach, and that good communication relies on a combination of a sensory stimuli. Building a relationship with an audience, fostering trust, requires communicators to listen as much, if not more, than communicate. Communication needs to come from a place of empathy and this is often missing. The importance of authenticity and credibility in developing and delivering effective communication that supports change in behaviour. "Washington is where good words go to die" comment illustrating the impact of internal corporate communication guidelines on the effectiveness of communications designed to raise awareness and influence behaviour.   “…We ought keep our eye out for ways to capture people’s attention because capturing people’s attention, and holding it, is the essence of communication…”   PROJECTS AND RESOURCES MENTIONED: The Analogies Project Shortcut (by John Pollack)   CONNECT WITH JOHN: Website   Thank you for listening! You have an obligation to yourself, to God, and to the world to be authentically, unapologetically YOU! Be the youest you you can possibly be. To be anything else is to be a fraud, to live a lie. When you are not authentically you, you are stealing from others their right to have a relationship, personal or professional, with the real you! Changing your behavior to please other people is not just unhealthy for you, it is actually a form of manipulation. Just be you. Do you like to watch movies on the big screen in movie theaters? I do! It's always interesting to be aware of sitting down in a theater with a box of popcorn waiting for the movie to start. I know where I am and what I am doing. When the movie starts and I get drawn into it, I completely forget that I am Bruce Van Horn and that I am sitting in theater watching a movie of my choosing. I become part of the movie. I lose my "I AM" consciousness. When the movie ends, I'm thrust back into my reality and I remember who I am and what I am doing. Many of us get completely lost and caught up in the movie we are watching in our minds. We think we are the movie, we think we are our thoughts and feelings. We forget that we are the observer of the movie and the creator of the movie. Listen as I explain: Listen on iTunes or Listen to/download this episode here: Love the show? The reason is, in the first case, someone was trying to run your business. In the second case, you were running your own business by thinking for yourself. Self-control, learning how to become aware of and manage your thoughts, emotions, and behaviors is not something that limits you. Very often, we find ourselves in conversations in which we use "I am" statements. People ask us who we are and we respond with statements like: I am a dad; I am a life and executive coach; I am a podcaster; I am a marathon runner; etc. These "I am" statements are descriptions of the roles we play in our physical bodies. They can actually be who we are if we live in an "I am" state of consciousness that is attached to our physical roles and this physical world. What we really are, however, is Spirit. We are Spiritual beings having a physical experience. If we shift our state of consciousness, our "I AM" focus, to our Spiritual entity, it completely changes how we see and interact with the physical world. Listen as I explain: Listen on iTunes or Listen to/download this episode here: Love the show? Blaming other people, governments, economies, etc. for who and what we are is easy, but it keeps us a prisoner to the actions of others. If our mindset is out of sync with this natural process, it leads to frustration; it causes us to give up and try something new before we gave ourselves the chance to see what we could create had we given ourselves more time. LIAM 320 – Success Principle: E+R=O with Kent Julian

Perhaps the most important success principle that I have learned and applied to my life is the formula E+R=O. I actually learned this principle from Jack Canfield in his book, The Success Principles. Most people, myself included, live with an E=O mindset, which means the events (the things that happen to us) determine our outcomes. If we are happy, it is because good things are happening. If we are sad, angry, lonely, or broke, it is because of events that have caused us to feel that way. This simply isn't true. The truth is it is how we respond to those events that determine our outcomes--how we feel or what quality of life we live. My good friend, Kent Julian, and I had a wonderful conversation about this very topic. Listen to our lively conversation: Listen on iTunes or Listen to/download this episode here: This episode is sponsored by: Please support our sponsor by visiting their site and learning more about them! Polonius told his son, Laertes: "This above all: to thine ownself be true." By this, he was telling his son that the most important virtue is that of integrity. A recent study of self-made multi-millionaires shows their #1 character trait is integrity. Being true to yourself, being the same core person with the same core values in all settings is a success principle you should endeavor to live by. It is so much more than being honest. You are going to have to believe this to be true: a foundational success principle is faith! In order to accomplish just about anything, you must exercise a certain amount of faith--a belief that something is true regardless of whether or not you can see it, feel it, or logically explain it. Successful people consistently have faith that what they want will come true, what they need will be supplied, and the people who need to be involved will show up at the right time with the right resources. The more faith we have, the more action we can take to accomplish our goals.  Listen as I explain: Listen on iTunes or Listen to/download this episode here: Love the show? "Purpose" is the reason, the "why" we want to have, be, or do something. A goal without a strong purpose is a goal we will probably not spend much energy trying to achieve. In this episode, I want to look at "purpose" from another perspective. Many of us have experienced painful, tragic events in our lives. We often struggle with trying to understand the reason it happened--its purpose. Perhaps the greatest ability we have, as human beings, is the ability to think any thought we want to think at any moment in time. Along with that ability comes the gift of being able to decide for ourselves what the purpose of something--or our lives in general--is. I want to help you "restory" your past to assign a more useful purpose to the painful events of life. Listen as I explain: Listen on iTunes or Listen to/download this episode here: Love the show? So, that thing you just did, did you do it on purpose? I hope so. One of the things successful people consistently do is this: they have a purpose for everything they do! The word "purpose" means: "the reason for which something is done or created or for which something exists." Many people are simply going through the motions of life or are simply reacting to situations and other influences without much forethought as to the reason for doing what they do or thinking what they think. You should have a clear purpose, a "why," for all of your goals, all of your activities, and all of your decisions. It's one thing to know what you want. It's another thing to know why you want it, what you will do with it, how it will enhance your life and the lives of others. Listen as I explain: Listen on iTunes or Listen to/download this episode here: Love the show? Success leaves clues. Studies of the most successful people reveal that they all live and operate according to certain principles. This episode is the first in a series in which I'll talk about these success principles. The first is a combination of two: vision and desire. Successful people have a clear vision of what it is they want to achieve. They see as if it was already real and talk about it like it was the past. Combined with clarity of vision is a very strong desire to create what they see; a strong desire to have, be, or experience the thing they envision. It's one thing want something, and another to see it clearly. Together, however, they create a powerful formula for success! There's a lot of talk, these days, about leadership. Leaders need to have a clear vision for where the company is going; leaders need to motivate others and create a culture where people can grow and do their best work; and so on...  All of these are true, of course. However, what is often overlooked and undervalued, is that leaders must start with themselves. You cannot effectively lead others if you are not, first and foremost, leading yourself. What are you doing to lead yourself? Do you have a vision for your own life outside of work? Do you lead yourself to grow physically, mentally, and spiritually? Your #1 priority must be you! Paxil (paroxetine) is an antidepressant that belongs to group of drugs called selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). Paroxetine affects chemicals in the brain that may be unbalanced in people with depression, anxiety, or other disorders. Paxil is used to treat depression, including major depressive disorder. My answer is, of course, YES, I have some very important advice on the topic. The core of the matter is the shift in mindset from employee to entrepreneur. The most important professional mindset you can adopt is that of being self-employed regardless of who signs your paycheck. You are self-employed and always represent your own company. When looking for work, you are not looking for a job or a new employer; you are looking for a customer! Listen as I explain: Listen on iTunes or Listen to/download this episode here: This episode is sponsored by: Please support our sponsor by visiting their site and learning more about them! However, another way to finish the year strong is, actually, to take some time for rest and self-reflection. At the gym, we don't build strength while exercising--we build strength by resting after the workout. If you've been going really hard, mentally and/or physically, maybe the best way for you to finish strong is by taking some time just for you, to rest, to do some self-reflection, to meditate, to refocus your priorities. Listen as I explain: Listen on iTunes or Listen to/download this episode here: Love the show? If you can only do one thing to positively change your life, it should be this: feel and express gratitude! I believe gratitude is the most powerful force in the universe. Gratitude, however, is not just a good feeling that makes you a little happier. Gratitude is science, it is energy, and there is a "law of gratitude" that is operating at all times, whether you believe it or not. Listen as I explain: Listen on iTunes or Listen to/download this episode here: Love the show? What are the things that make you happy, make you glad to be alive, that bring you joy? I'd love to hear about them. In fact, everyone around you would love to hear about them. Even when we are going through hard times, it is good to know there is still goodness, kindness, beauty, and love in the world. When you speak of your joy, it makes me feel good. When you speak of your joy, it makes you feel good. The more you speak of your joy, the more joy will come into your life for you to speak about. Joy loves to be publicly praised! So, will you do me a favor? Will you speak of your joy? Listen as I explain: Listen on iTunes or Listen to/download this episode here: Love the show? Click here to Tweet a shoutout! When like-minded people gather for the purpose of mutual encouragement and guidance, that combined energy and wisdom creates a Master-Mind that is stronger and wiser than our individual minds! Much of my own personal and professional success has been the result of surrounding myself with people who have the same desires for growth and positive influence on the world. Being open to the wisdom, insight, and advice of people I trust and admire has helped me make wiser decisions and take bolder action than I would have without this counsel. Joining a MasterMind group is one of the best investments you will ever make! Listen as I explain: Listen on iTunes or Listen to/download this episode here: Love the show? On November 8, 2016, I celebrated my 53rd birthday! Each year, since turning 50, I have celebrated my birthday as if I was releasing a new software upgrade. Bruce 5.2 was full of new features and benefits, but I'm not satisfied to stay there. I believe we should be constantly growing, learning, and expanding our experience of life--not just for ourselves, but for the betterment of all mankind. I have many new features and enhancements planned for this next year, along with the removal of unproductive features. I hope you will enjoy and find this way of thinking about your life helpful.
