Kim Ades delves into the transformative power of journaling, comparing it to navigating darkness with a guiding light. Her journal-based coaching approach helps clients unearth deep-seated beliefs, challenge negative self-talk, disrupt patterns, and achieve rapid, remarkable, and lasting growth. In each episode of Neuroscience of Coaching, host Dr. Irena O'Brien explains the science-based insights behind a particular concept and interviews a coach to discuss how these apply in the real world. Just as she does in her professional programs, Irena “un-complicates” neuroscience and teaches practical, evidence-based tools and strategies that listeners can use in their coaching practices.“And so my journal was central to my healing, was central to my dealing with my emotions, dealing with my feelings of sadness, of failure, all of those things.” — Kim AdesGuest Bio:Kim Ades, MBA, is a serial entrepreneur who, after a decade running a simulation-based assessment firm, sold her company and briefly worked for a local coaching company. She left after 8 months, believing she could offer better coaching. Kim felt the prevailing coaching model was flawed, intuitively realizing that driven leaders needed to understand the link between their thoughts and outcomes rather than being “held accountable.”In 2004, Kim founded Frame of Mind Coaching®, focusing on helping leaders maximize their potential and live fulfilling lives. She also created the Frame of Mind Coaching® Certification program to teach leaders effective coaching techniques. As a pioneer in journal-based coaching, Kim is also the creator of two supporting online platforms — JournalEngine® and The Journal That Talks Back.®Host Bio:Dr. Irena O'Brien teaches coaches and care professionals how to achieve better results for their clients through neuroscience. She is the founder of Neuroscience School, which helps practitioners understand and apply insights from cutting-edge neuroscience research. She loves seeing her students gain confidence in their ability to evaluate neuroscience findings and use them successfully in their own practices. Her Certificate Program in Neuroscience is certified by the International Coaching Federation (ICF) for Continuing Coaching Education credit.Dr. O'Brien has studied neuroscience for 25 years and holds a Ph.D. in the field from the Université du Quebec à Montréal (UQAM), where she did brain-imaging studies. She completed her postdoctoral fellowship at the Centre for Language, Mind, and Brain at McGill University.Resources mentioned in this episode:MiraseeDr. Irena O'Brien's website: The Neuroscience SchoolKim's website: Frame of Mind Coaching Special gift for podcast listeners: 10 Powerful Journaling PromptsNeuroscience of Coaching Episode 12: The Power of Reflective Journals (Kay Adams & Deborah Ross)Credits:Host: Dr. Irena O'BrienProducer: Andrew ChapmanAudio Editor: Marvin del RosarioExecutive Producer: Danny InyMusic Soundscape: Chad Michael SnavelyMaking our hosts sound great: Home Brew AudioMusic credits:Track Title: Sneaker SmeakerArtist: Avocado JunkieWriter: Sander KalmeijerPublisher: A SOUNDSTRIPE PRODUCTIONTrack Title: Coo CoosArtist: Dresden, The FlamingoWriter: Matthew WigtonPublisher: A SOUNDSTRIPE PRODUCTIONTrack Title: In This LightArtist: Sounds Like SanderWriter: Sander KalmeijerPublisher: A SOUNDSTRIPE PRODUCTIONSpecial effects credits:24990513_birds-chirping_by_promission used with permission of the author and under license by AudioJungle/Envato Market. To catch the great episodes coming up on Neuroscience of Coaching, please follow us on Mirasee FM's YouTube channelor your favorite podcast player. As leaders, there is one specific skill that can help unlock the true potential of our team and that is coaching. Unfortunately many leaders do not receive the coaching and mentoring in order to build their coaching muscle, and hence focus their attention on what I call surface level elements, being behaviours and actions, rather than the deep rooted thinking patterns that lead to behaviours. In today's episode, I had the privilege of speaking with Kim Ades, the Founder of Frame of Mind Coaching™, and Co-Founder of The Journal That Talks Back, and Journal Engine. Kim is an author, speaker, entrepreneur, coach and mum of 5, who has a unique approach to coaching - an approach that is delivering remarkable results. BIO: Kim Ades is the Founder of Frame of Mind Coaching™ and Co-Founder of The Journal That Talks Back™. Recognized as a pioneer in leadership coaching and thought mastery, Kim uses her unique philosophy and quirky coaching style to help leaders identify their blind spots and learn to direct their thinking to achieve extraordinary results.STORY: Kim had partnered with a friend and her ex-husband to start a business, but as her marriage unraveled, the partnership became hard. Kim decided to sell the company to her husband but didn't take the time to understand the deal. Three years later, Kim learned that she owed the government $300,000 in taxes from the business she'd sold.LEARNING: When things are very stressful, it's a good idea to slow down instead of speeding up. Don't be forced into a decision without understanding all the elements. "If you don't understand what's going on, don't just quickly make a decision. Slow it down, get your information, and make sure you understand fully what's going on."Kim Ades Guest profileKim Ades is the Founder of Frame of Mind Coaching™ and Co-Founder of The Journal That Talks Back™. Author, speaker, entrepreneur, coach, and mom of five, Kim's claim to fame is teaching her powerful coaching process to leaders, executives, and entrepreneurs worldwide.Worst investment everWhen Kim started her first company, Upward Motion, she had two business partners. One was a good friend, and the other was her ex-husband. The company built simulation-based assessments to help people make better hiring decisions. As Kim's marriage was unraveling, maintaining the partnership became harder and harder. She ended up selling her business to her ex-husband. The problem is that Kim didn't know anything about selling businesses. She was pretty young and didn't know about taxes or tax law. Kim was in a state of upheaval and just wanted to get out and have peace in my life. So, Kim made a deal without really understanding it. All she knew was she was getting out of the mess with a lot of money. It was still hard for Kim because she was very attached to the business.About three years later, Kim was contacted by Revenue Canada, notifying her that she hadn't paid her tax bill and owed $300,000. Kim's hastily made decision had led her to this point.Lessons learnedWhen things are very stressful, it's a good idea to slow down instead of speeding up.Don't be forced into a decision without understanding all the elements. If you don't know what's happening, slow it down, get your information, and make sure you know entirely what's happening.Don't be pressured into something that is not the right fit for you.Andrew's takeawaysIf you can sit through the pressure, you will win.Actionable adviceIf you're feeling pressured to make a decision, first ask yourself why, what's the rush, and what's the belief you have that makes you feel like there's an urgency to making this decision. Find out where the pressure is coming from and the facts around it. When does this decision need to be made? Are you prepared to make the decision?Kim's

It's time to use the transformative power of journaling to bring about the change you want in your life. Tune in to find out more!   Episode Introduction:  In this week's episode of Law Chat with Girija, our guest Kim Ades joins us to talk about all thing journaling and how journaling got her through the toughest phase in her life. We also discuss how it helps in helping us build emotional resilience.   Episode Summary:  Kim Ades walks us through her journey of having to leave a company she built from the ground up to go work a job briefly before her entrepreneurial spirit kicked in again and helped her start her own leadership coaching company. With anecdotes from her own life and lots of vulnerability, this episode is as relatable as they come.   Main Takeaways: Journaling is a really powerful tool and can help you deal with your mindset blocks and limiting beliefs. Work on these two journaling prompts: What do I really really really want more than anything? What's stopping me from having that right now?  You need to make sure that you believe the dialogue you feed yourself in order to avoid an internal conflict of thoughts. The purpose of a journal is to use it to manage your emotional state. Emotional resilience is the ability to bounce back from adversity with speed and agility. The idea of work-life "balance" is really misunderstood and overrated, that's not what we're truly after. If your beliefs and goals aren't aligned, it's impossible to achieve them.   Fun Facts About Kim Ades:   Currently Reading: Son of a Witch Currently Watching: The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel & The Great   Find Kim Ades: Send Your Journal Responses to Kim: kim@frameofmindcoaching.com Frame of Mind Coaching: https://www.frameofmindcoaching.com/ The Journal That Talks Back: https://www.thejournalthattalksback.com/ FOMC Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/FOMcoaching  TJTTB Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/TheJournalThatTalksBack Get the visual experience, watch the videocast for the episode here: https://youtu.be/a4JAC_gLOx8   Connect With Girija: Website: https://www.gbplaw.com/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/gbplaw/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/GBPLaw/   Help us mentor other entrepreneurs through the power of storytelling by rating us and leaving a positive review on Apple Podcast: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/law-chat-with-girija/id1528580730   Get the FREE Five Day Legal Audit: https://yourcontractbuddy.com/5-day-free-legal-audit-challenge/   Join Law Chat for Entrepreneurs Free Facebook Community: https://www.facebook.com/groups/lawchat   Get Ready To Use Contract Templates At: https://yourcontractbuddy.com/

Personal growth is absolutely essential to live an authentic life. It allows us to engage in self-discovery and reach our goals and dreams. However, it can also be a  super uncomfortable and scary process which can cause us to resist and avoid it.In this episode, I sit down with the podcast host of the Anything We Want podcast, Axelle, to discuss how we can not only embrace growth but create opportunities for it in our lives. Have you ever felt like you were different from other members of your family or social groups? Perhaps these differences related to your political views or desired career path or values in general. These differences can cause one to feel like they are the "black sheep".When we don't feel like we fit in or feel negatively judged by other members of our social groups, it can cause us to hide our authentic selves. It's so important that we live authentic lives so that we can experience happiness and fulfillment. That's why it's so important to own our black sheep identities despite what others have to say... and Maddy Maksy will tell us how we can do just that.Maddy is a an Anthropologist-turned-Life-Coach who helps wandering souls find what makes them truly, unapologetically themselves. After graduating from the University of New Hampshire in 2019, she started her journey of self-discovery and became a Life Alignment Coach. Now she works with others to help them build lives that feel completely authentic. Maddy, too, has felt like she is the black sheep of her family, being the only non-republican, LGBTQIA+, and "spiritual" member. She used to resent expressing herself truthfully in front of her family, but once she started really focusing on her self-exploration and personal truths, she became so much more empowered to stand up for herself and her differences. Writing is an incredible tool to explore and discover your authentic self. Whether it be engaging in reflective daily journaling or crafting a work of fiction or jotting down whatever story you want to share, there are so many parts of who you are that can be revealed in your writing. Writing enables you to get your stream of consciousness down on paper and unleash your creativity, which allows you to tangibly see parts of who you are that may have otherwise been hidden. So how do you use writing as medium to discover your authentic self? Kim Ades is the Founder of Frame of Mind Coaching™ and The Journal That Talks Back™. Recognized as a pioneer in the field of leadership coaching and thought mastery, Kim uses her unique philosophy and quirky coaching style to help leaders identify their blind spots and learn to direct their thinking to achieve extraordinary results. Author, speaker, entrepreneur, coach, and mom of five, Kim's claim to fame is teaching her powerful coaching process to leaders, executives, and entrepreneurs worldwide. Top 3 Takeaways Feeling Good is Fundamental—If you want to perform at your best, you've got to feel good about what you're pursuing. Life's too short to chase goals that don't resonate with your deepest sense of purpose. Write it Out—Journaling allows you to slow things down and capture your thoughts in an unobstructed flow. Then you can step back and see them in a more open way to broaden your perspective. Dig Deep—Go beyond the surface level to examine the emotions tangled up in your experiences. Don't just dwell on decisions and actions, but get down to the emotional why behind them. From the Source “When people aren't reaching the goals they want to reach, it simply means they're not lined up with the goal or the desire.“ “Journaling allows us to deposit our thoughts, step back, and look at them from a greater vantage point.“ “it's really very useful for leaders to understand that in order to truly maximize the potential of your people, you absolutely need to look at the beliefs they have around everything they're doing.” “Our fingers can't write or type as fast as our brains go. They just can't. It's physically not possible. And so what happens when you're journaling is you're actually slowing down your mind.” “Now you're really digging in. You're really going beneath the surface of your original journal and you're examining, how do I really think or feel about that? Why did that happen? What is the pattern that's going on? Why did I respond that way? What's actually happening?“ Connect with Kim Website: frameofmindcoaching.com Website: thejournalthattalksback.com LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/kimades/

In the 1920s, Ford Motor Company introduced the 9 to 5 work day as way to protect employees from being over worked. This was a great way to ensure the health and wellbeing of those working in the manufacturing and industrial sectors. However, as time has gone on and technology has evolved and allowed for automation, the need for manual labour has significantly decreased. Today, companies rely on creativity and innovation as key skills in employees. Given that the nature of work has drastically changed in the last century, should employers rely on a 9-5 work model? In this week's episode, I sit down with Author and Author Coach, Mackenzie Finklea to discuss this topic. Mackenzie is a Texan, born-and-raised. She currently lives and works out of her home office in Galveston; helping other authors achieve their dreams of being published. She holds a bachelor's degree in Anthropology: with a special interest in human cultures and archaeology. When she's not researching and observing displays of human culture, she enjoying traveling, especially off the beaten path, and visiting as many museums as possible along the way. After attending a summer program at New York University, Mackenzie realized there is a major issue with companies that are still gravitating towards traditional in-person work methods despite the evidence of how flexibility (i.e. working remotely/hybrid) actually increases productivity. As a result of this, Mackenzie feels as though companies are excluding the potential for so many great workers across the country. Right now he has a lot of things on his plate and, naturally, that causes a lot of stress. But it doesn't end there. Jonathan describes this issue as if he has bees buzzing around in his head, and those bees are now affecting his sleep and even his relationships. And in talking, I discover that he's not actually making any space to attend to those bees. What I mean is that we should allow ourselves some “bee time”, where we're not neglecting the anxiety and stress, but facing it. And while there are many, many different ways to do that, the important thing is that you actually do make that time for yourself. So don't just lock the bees away. Make time for them, and who knows, you could even be able to use them for brilliance!Join the conversation!www.frameofmindcoaching.com/the-frame-of-mind-coaching-podcastClick here to learn more about The Journal That Talks Back™:www.thejournalthattalksback.com/Read this episode's transcript here:www.buzzsprout.com/1252997/episodes/9823465Do you have a challenge you'd like to discuss? The Importance of Honouring & Amplifying Everyone's Voices

What does it mean to honour the voices around us? How can we use the power of storytelling as a catalyst for positive change in a world that glamourizes conformity? In this week's episode, I explore the importance of honouring and amplifying everyone's voices with author, Kyra Ann Dawkins. Inspired by the stories her grandfather told her, Kyra is no stranger to writing. Having published in many papers, she graduated with highest honors from Phillips Exeter Academy and from Columbia University in the City of New York where she majored in Medicine, Literature, and Society. After graduating, she noticed an intense pressure to construct her identity. A champion of oral tradition, she wrote her debut book, The We and the They, to create a narrative space where readers could escape the limits of individuality and experience a story as a member of a new collective. In our conversation, Kyra shares her story and more specifically, talks about her Autistic and Nonverbal sister, Kendra, and how she has shown Kyra what it means to be true to who you are and to honour all voices. In more detail we discuss: Why storytelling is importantThe lessons Kyra's sister has taught herWhat it means to honour the voices around usHow we can honour and amplify the voices around usAnd more!Connect with Kyra on Instagram @kyra_ann_writes and check out her website https://www.kyraanndawkins.org! NEW MENTAL HEALTH SERVICE ALERT!Check out The Journal That Talks Back! The Power of Authentic Community

Being a part of authentic communities is an essential part of living life with meaning and purpose. They allow you to surround yourself with diverse people who are grounded in the same values and desire to make positive change in the world. But finding your people can be so challenging at times, especially in this world that encourages conformity over authenticity. In this week's episode, I discuss this idea of authentic communities with the Founder of Happy Human Project, Aidan Bonner. Aidan sprung onto campus at Dalhousie University last year with one goal in mind: proving that happiness comes from a community that unites for the greater good, as Founder and President of Happy Human Project, at a time when the sense of community perished most during the COVID-19 pandemic.  Aidan has become a voice for voiceless communities nationwide and has sparked efforts for various causes including helping homeless, assisting Indigenous organizations, raising funds for food banks, and has used his voice as a member of the LGBTQ+ community in spreading the importance of inclusivity and equality. In addition, he continues to advocate the importance of mental health through his social media and as a founding member of Step Above Stigma. Ultimately, life is so much more fulfilling when we surround ourselves with people who are aligned with our authentic selves. Regardless of the challenges that come with finding people who align with your authentic self, there are many ways to go about it... and Aidan shares his insights on how you can do just that! In more detail we discuss:What authentic communities areThe kinds of communities you can get involved inHow to go about finding authentic people and communitiesHow to start your own authentic communitiesAnd more!Connect with Aidan on Instagram @aidanbonner and check out Happy Human Project's website https://www.happyhumanproject.ca and Instagram @happyhumanproj. NEW MENTAL HEALTH SERVICE ALERT!Check out The Journal That Talks Back! TW: this discussion does contain descriptive content relating to eating disorders. Please listen at your own discretion. Eating disorders have the highest mortality rate of any psychiatric illness. And yet, there is still a lack of education and awareness about eating disorders which is preventing many people who are suffering from recovering. Simply put, we need to have more conversations about eating disorders so we can not only help ourselves if we find we are engaging in disordered eating, but so we can also help others and break down the stigma associated with mental illness as a whole. In this episode, I navigate this topic with Cali Dickson, who recently recovered from a severe eating disorder. Cali shares her story to help shed light on this issue and help educate listeners on how eating disorders can affect anyone. In more detail, we discuss:What an eating disorder is and what it looks like How one develops an eating disorder and the causesWhat recovery looks likeWhy bringing awareness to eating disorders is importantAdvice for those struggling with an eating disorderAnd more! Connect with Cali on Instagram @calis_corner! Cali also recommends following these AWESOME accounts on Instagram for additional support:@jennifer_rollin@nourishingmindsnutrition@bodyjustice.therapistNEW MENTAL HEALTH SERVICE ALERT!Check out The Journal That Talks Back! Did you know that it costs American companies more than $300 billion per year as a result of workplace stress? Workplace stress is common in this world that glamorizes productivity, efficiency, and effectiveness. Although these things can definitely return a profit (at times), it does come as an expense for many workers' mental health. Ultimately, workplace stress can be damaging to the wellbeing of employees and the company as a whole, so it is essential that not only companies invest in mental health resources, but we also make time to take care of ourselves... but how?In this week's episode, I sit down with TEDx Speaker and Author, Massoma Alam, to dive into the issues that cause workplace stress and how we can create healthier workplaces.
