Today in honor of Women's History Month and the people of Ukraine, I present a compendium of eight different Liedersängerinnen singing Franz Schubert's song cycle Winterreise, set to poems by Wilhelm Müller. When I am in despair, I turn to Schubert, who, even in such a bleak piece as Winterreise, offers incomparable insight and empathy into our shared humanity. Though it is often held that this is a cycle that should sung exclusively by men, these eight women put the lie to that faulty premise. Featured singers are Lois Marshall, Brigitte Fassbaender, Lotte Lehmann, Elena Gerhardt, Christa Ludwig, Margaret Price, Mitsuko Shirai, and Alice Coote. Pianists are Paul Ulanowsky, Erik Werba, James Levine, Hartmut Höll, Julius Drake, Coenraad Bos, Aribert Reimann, Wolfram Rieger, Anton Kuerti, and Thomas Dewey. This is an episode that I have been planning for some time, and with so many people forced to take precarious and life-threatening winter journeys, there was no time like the present than to share this music, and these singers, with you. Warning: This is at least a six-hanky episode! Countermelody is a podcast devoted to the glory and the power of the human voice raised in song. Singer and vocal aficionado Daniel Gundlach explores great singers of the past and present focusing in particular on those who are less well-remembered today than they should be. Daniel's lifetime in music as a professional countertenor, pianist, vocal coach, voice teacher, and journalist yields an exciting array of anecdotes, impressions, and “inside stories.” At Countermelody's core is the celebration of great singers of all stripes, their instruments, and the connection they make to the words they sing. By clicking on the following link (https://linktr.ee/CountermelodyPodcast) you can find the dedicated Countermelody website which contains additional content including artist photos and episode setlists. The link will also take you to Countermelody's Patreon page, where you can pledge your monthly support at whatever level you can afford. Bonus episodes available exclusively to Patreon supporters are currently available and further bonus content including interviews and livestreams is planned for the upcoming season.

Happy New Year! I'm so excited to start 2022 with a great discussion with Gerald Finley, one of the world's leading opera and concert singers. I was pleased to talk to him amidst his very busy schedule. We talked last year, a few months ahead of a US recital tour he's embarking on next week with renowned British pianist Julius Drake. Gerry had been very busy over the past two years despite the Coronavirus pandemic and UK national lockdowns so we started off by talking about what he'd been up to. We also talked about a wide range of topics from young singers, conservatoire life and the challenges and high points within a long and illustrious career. Additionally, we discussed some of the interesting issues raised crossing different genres such as opera, musical theatre and acting. Interview with Gerry recorded 26 August 2021. Podcast published 21 January 2022. Gerry's bio: http://www.geraldfinley.com/about. US tour dates: http://www.geraldfinley.com/event-directory. *The discussion about King Lear towards the end of the podcast refers to a project last year at the UK's Grange Festival, where a group of established opera singers acted Shakespeare's play. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/talking-classical-podcast/message

Synopsis In the year 1840, the immensely talented German pianist Clara Wieck was eagerly awaiting the eve of her 21st birthday, when she would be free to legally marry the 30-year-old composer and music critic Robert Schumann. The couple had hoped to wed years earlier, but the match was bitterly opposed by Clara's father. Clara and Robert kept in touch by letters, which were sometimes intercepted by Papa Wieck. Early in 1840, Clara wrote, “Dear Robert, I love you so much it hurts my heart. Tell me what you're writing. I would so love to know, oh please, please. A quartet, an overture – even perhaps a symphony? Might it by any chance be – a wedding present?” The marriage finally took place on today's date in 1840. As she had guessed, Robert presented Clara with a musical wedding present: not a quartet, overture, or symphony, but a set of 26 songs, published as his Opus 25. The opening song, entitled “Dedication,” is a Rückert poem which contains this refrain: “You are my heart and soul, my bliss and pain, you are the world I live in and the heaven I aspire to, my good angel, my better self.” Music Played in Today's Program Robert Schumann (1810 – 1856) (transcribed by Franz Liszt) Widmung (Michael Ponti, piano) Marco Polo 223.127 Robert Schumann Widmung, fr Op. 25 (Sophie Daneman, soprano; Julius Drake, piano) EMI 72828
Poet Wendy Cope joins our editorial assistant Freya Parr over Zoom from her home in Cambridgeshire to discuss how her enduring relationship with classical music has changed throughout the course of her life, with various careers as a primary school teacher, journalist and now poet. Introduced to the piano at the age of five, music has been a constant in Wendy’s life, with many of her poems having now been set by the UK’s leading composers. She tells us all about this fascinating process, and how it feels to hear your words set to music. This week, our podcast answers the searing questions: should you stop having milk in your tea? Believe it or not, that’s one for the Classic FM doctor, Rob Hicks. We also ask the FT’s Economics Correspondent why all bar one of the so-called experts in the City failed to predict the latest rise in interest rates. Add to that a bunch of paperbacks, as recommended by our resident bookworm, Chris Powling, and a chat with the distinguished accompanist, Julius Drake, and you have an online listen not to be missed.
