Best known as Effie, the loyal secretary to Sam Spade in The Maltese Falcon, Lee Patrick enjoyed great success on the Broadway stage and worked steadily as a character actress on the big and small screens. We'll hear her in a pair of shows from Suspense: first, she's half of a murderous married couple in "Just One Happy Little Family" (originally aired on CBS on April 6, 1958), and then she plays a woman whose part-time job takes a turn for the dangerous in "My Dear Niece" (originally aired on CBS on November 16, 1958). Plus, she recreates one of her great Broadway roles alongside Orson Welles and Jack Benny in a Campbell Playhouse production of "June Moon" (originally aired on CBS on March 24, 1940).

On March 24th, 1940 Jack Benny was guest-star for a dramatic role on Orson Welles' Campbell Playhouse over CBS airwaves. The story they chose was "June Moon," a play by George S. Kaufman and Ring Lardner, based on the Lardner short story "Some Like Them Cold," about a love affair that loses steam before it ever gets started. At the center of June Moon is Fred Stevens, a young aspiring lyricist who journeys from Schenectady to New York City, where he hopes to make a name for himself in the world of song publishing and night clubs. On the train he meets dental assistant Edna Baker, and the two embark upon a friendship that evolves into love for her and fondness for him. While struggling to become a Tin Pan Alley notable, Fred takes a shine to his composer partner Paul's glamorous, gold-digging sister-in-law Eileen. The two men sell a song to a music publisher and it develops into a hit. Ultimately, revelations about Eileen's true character help return Fred to his senses and Edna, whom he realizes he truly loves. The cast included Orson Welles (Candy Butcher), Jack Benny (Fred Stevens), Benny Rubin (Maxie Schwartz), Gus Schilling (Paul Sears), Bea Benaderet (Lucille Sears) and Virginia Gordon (Edna Baker). Lee Patrick reprised her Broadway role as Eileen. Ernest Chappell was the announcer. "June Moon" was Orson Welles penultimate episode with The Campbell Playhouse. He would leave the series after March 31st to focus on the production of his first feature film, Citizen Kane.

We're excited for the start of a new school year and the renewed energy that new Junior Members bring. To welcome these JMs to their ICS home, we asked some of them to share a bit about themselves, their academic backgrounds, what brought them to ICS, and the burning questions they bring with them. So we were joined in the podcast studio by Theoren Tolsma, Abbi Hofstede, and June Moon, and we're pleased to have the chance to introduce them to you now! Critical Faith is sponsored by the Centre for Philosophy, Religion, and Social Ethics (CPRSE) at the Institute for Christian Studies in Toronto. For more, visit www.icscanada.edu. Sponsored by Great Lakes Grooming Co. We're back with our Suicide Squad Movie Review Podcast where we discuss our top 5 points about the brand new DC Cinematic Universe movie. From Amanda Waller and Harley Quinn to Joker and Deadshot we discuss it all on this week's podcast. Synopsis for our Suicide Squad Movie Review Directed by David Ayer Written by David Ayer A squad of villainous misfits is assembled by the leader of a secret government organisation, Amanda Waller (Viola Davis) to help defend the world against potential future meta-human threats. The team consists of Enchantress (Cara Delevingne) a 5,000 year old witch possessing the body of archaeologist June Moon. Crazy cool Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie) the girlfriend of the clown prince of crime the Joker (Jared Leto). Assassin for hire Deadshot (Will Smith) who is trying to save his daughter. Beer swilling Australian Captain Boomerang (Jai Courtney) a no nonsense tough guy. The deformed Waylon Jones (Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje) who has become the monster Killer Croc that everyone thought he was. Fiery tempered Diablo (Jay Hernandez) whose past is tempering his usefulness to the team. Rounding out the group is Slipknot (Adam Beach). The squad is controlled by Rick Flagg (Joel Kinnaman) a special forces operative who Waller has maneuvered into her control and his right hand samurai Katana (Karen Fukuhara) who fights with a sword that captures the souls of it's victims. When one of the team turns on them they must work together to save themselves. Thank you so much for listening to our Suicide Squad Movie Review Podcast on Gotham TV Podcast. March 31, 1940 - The Jello Program starring Jack Benny! Jack was also on Orson Wells' program that week in a mostly dramatic play called "June Moon". But most of the show is a spoof of Walt Disney's Pinocchio which came out the previous month, February 1940. The Blue Fairy was played by a woman Jack almost married, Mary Kelly. Of course he ended up marrying Mary Livingston instead.

The Campbell Playhouse was a sponsored continuation of the Mercury Theater on the Air, a direct result of the instant publicity from the War of the Worlds panic. The switch occurred on December 9, 1938. In spite of using the same creative staff, the show had a different flavor under sponsorship, partially attributed to a guest star policy in place, which relegated the rest of the Mercury Players to supporting cast for Orson Welles and the Hollywood guest of the week. There was a growing schism between Welles, still reaping the rewards of his Halloween night notoriety, and his collaborator John Houseman, still in the producer's chair but feeling more like an employee than a partner. The writer, as during the unsponsored run, was Howard Koch.
