There's a pic on X that shows a 45 year old Tom Brady compared to a 38 year old Kenny Stabler. Kenny looks no less than 55 years old. Kenny was probably drinking and smoking a lot. Gio thinks it's really the food we're eating here compared to Europe, where people still smoke and still look healthier than a lot of people in America. We took calls on people looking older back a few decades ago than we do now. C-Lo returns for an update and starts with Aaron Glenn talking about the sting of losing the Championship game to Denver and how he came to get that back for the Jets. Gio channels Joe Benigno talking about Darren Mougey. Jerry Jones met the media and referenced ‘glory holes' again and cried during the press conference. The Knicks beat the Grizzlies at the Garden. In the final segment of the hour, we took calls on why people looked older a few decades ago than we do now. Gio has been watching videos about Neptune and the moons around it.
Hour 1 Jerry is in for Boomer today so it's Gio & Jerry. We talked about the Jets press conference with Aaron Glenn and Darren Mougey. Glenn said everything Jets fans would want to hear. There are still decisions to be made, including what to do with Aaron Rodgers. If not Rodgers, who are they realistically getting? How much did Glenn have to do with the Lions successful turnaround? When teams are stuck in quarterback hell, like the Jets, it is going to be tough on the head coach. Rodgers comes with a lot of baggage that a head coach has to deal with. Jerry has hope for the Jets, as both the Red Sox and Cubs figured it out. I mean, we had a Cubs/Cleveland World Series. C-Lo is in for Jerry and is here for his first update and starts with the sounds of Aaron Glenn from the press conference. Darren Mougey referenced getting a Super Bowl back to the Jets. The Jags welcomed Liam Coen as the new Head Coach and it didn't go great. In the final segment of the hour, Al & Jerry are struggling to get views on YouTube. Hour 2 In the last 3 years in the playoffs, we looked at penalties called against the Chiefs and those called against their opponents. There is a big difference. This is why people think the Chiefs get the calls. A caller said maybe great teams commit fewer penalties. A woman thinks the refs knew about Dave Portnoy's bet against the Chiefs and favored them because of it. C-Lo returns for an update and starts with the sounds of Aaron Glenn, wanting ‘this job'. Glenn said ‘get used to winning'. He will not be calling the defense because he wants to be ‘the best head coach'. Pete Carroll met the media and was interrupted by Marshawn Lynch. Jerry Jones talked about the risk of hiring Brian Schottenheimer since he has no head coaching experience. In the final segment of the hour, Brett from Long Island vs C-Mac is now a YouTube video on the WFAN channel. A caller said maybe the Chiefs don't make mistakes so they don't get flagged. Hour 3 There's a pic on X that shows a 45 year old Tom Brady compared to a 38 year old Kenny Stabler. Kenny looks no less than 55 years old. Kenny was probably drinking and smoking a lot. Gio thinks it's really the food we're eating here compared to Europe, where people still smoke and still look healthier than a lot of people in America. We took calls on people looking older back a few decades ago than we do now. Hour 4 Aaron Glenn mentioned in yesterday's press conference that he still thinks about the championship game loss to the Broncos and wants to get that back for the Jets. Gio said they have been in quarterback hell and they're still there. Glenn needs a great quarterback and a great offensive coordinator. Ben Johnson took the Bears job because of Caleb Williams. Mike Vrabel took the Patriots job because of Drake Maye. Jerry was not impressed by Maye, but Gio thought he was pretty good. We have to give Glenn a learning curve. We can't expect him to be a great coach in season one. C-Lo returns for his final update of the day, but first we talked about Gio's dog situation. Jerry used to have a tick where he would say, ‘and a ballsack' in the WFAN newsroom. C-Lo starts with the sounds of Aaron Glenn from his opening press conference. Woody Johnson also spoke about Glenn and GM Darren Mougey. Jon Gruden talked about the challenges of new head coaches. Jerry Jones talked about all the risks he's taken over the last five years. The Moment of The Day: Gio as ...

On the 72nd episode of “Great Dane Nation,” Morten is joined by legendary defensive coordinator and Super Bowl Champion Wade Phillips (08:05 – 49:24). But first, he checks in with TommyFreezePops (Tom Carroll) for this week's edition of the “Opening Kick” (01:12 – 07:13). This week, Morten reflects on “Super” Wild Card Weekend, and why adding that 7th team to each side of the bracket doesn't appear to have been the correct move for competitive balance. We then move to our interview with Wade Phillips, where he discusses a wide range of topics: why he loves Twitter (09:02); the story behind Wade's dad Bum drafting Morten in New Orleans, and why Wade was directly responsible for that draft pick (12:19); Bum Phillips' ability to give great advice to players, and diving into some of Wade's favorite stories about his dad (16:44); playing for his dad at the University of Houston, and how that led him to a path in coaching (20:37); diving into his philosophy on coaching defense, and why you have to stop the run (24:30); attending a coaching clinic in Berlin, and how the game is continuing to grow in Europe (28:25); why being an interim head coach is an almost impossible task (29:38); why Denver was his favorite head coaching job (31:22); trying to coach the Eagles' defense during the infamous “Fog Bowl” (33:14); benching Doug Flutie for the Bills' playoff opener after having a great season as their starter, and why he still thinks the “Music City Miracle” was a forward lateral (34:22); and “The Name Game,” featuring Kenny Stabler, Reggie White, John Elway, Marv Levy, Michael Vick, Von Miller, Peyton Manning and Sean McVay (36:18).Then we move to a special edition of “Morten's Fast 5,” where our Hall of Famer makes picks for all four games for the upcoming AFC & NFC Divisional Rounds (50:46 – 01:00:22). Morten gives his picks for Bengals at Titans (52:11), 49ers at Packers (54:41), Rams at Buccaneers (56:03) and Bills at Chiefs (57:29).Finally, we close things out with “Morten's Game Winner” – a weekly monologue from The Great Dane on his biggest takeaway of the week. After Justin Tucker made history on Sunday with his record-setting 66-yard field goal, Morten explains why Tucker is the greatest kicker in NFL history. We then move to our interview with Fred Biletnikoff, where he discusses a wide range of topics: the atmosphere in Las Vegas, why the team never felt at-home in Los Angeles, and trying to recreate the “Black Hole” at Allegiant Stadium (04:32); getting scolded by Pete Rozelle for smoking cigarettes on the sidelines while he was coaching (09:02); high praise for Darren Waller (10:41); why he believes the Raiders can win a Super Bowl with Derek Carr (11:47); some of his favorite Raiders on today's team, and what the key to their success will be this season (13:19); being impressed with Vegas' defense so far this season (14:45); insight into Jon Gruden, and what he thinks of the job he has done since returning to the NFL from the broadcast booth (16:32); what it was like to play for Coach Biletnikoff (18:05); why it was important for him to sign with the AFL's Raiders instead of the NFL's Lions (22:45); his first impressions of Al Davis, and how he'd describe the legendary owner to kids today that might not know who he is (24:49); the mentality that led to the Raiders of the 1970s to be feared league-wide (27:45); making the Hall-of-Fame-case for Daryle Lamonica, and how happy he was for Tom Flores getting inducted into Canton this summer (30:15); Kenny Stabler stories (33:30); why Tom Brady is the one quarterback playing today that he would have wanted to play with (37:06); absolutely roasting today's NFL officiating (39:04); reminiscing about the late, great Bobby Bowden (41:18); spending his final season as a professional football player in the CFL (46:08); this week's edition of “The Name Game,” featuring John Madden, Bill Walsh, Dave Casper, Ray Guy and Willie Brown (50:43); and proclaiming the 1970s Steelers as liars for not coming clean on the “Immaculate Reception” (54:03).Then we move to this week's edition of “Morten's Fast 5,” where our Hall of Famer makes picks for the five biggest games of the football weekend (55:12 – 01:02:19). Jim is joined by NFL Writer for Fansided and former NFL researcher for ESPN, Russell Baxter, to breakdown the hall of fame candidacy of former Cincinnati Bengals Quarterback Ken Anderson. Jim and Russell first discuss how Ken Anderson was the first great player in Bengals history (4:45). Next, they cover the 1982 Freezer Bowl, Kenny Stabler, Anthony Muñoz, and just how underrepresented the Bengals franchise is in terms of HOF inductees (33:23). Finally, they discuss where Anderson fits among the great quarterbacks of the 1970s, such as Terry Bradshaw and Roger Staubach (X), before coming to a conclusion on whether or not Anderson deserves a bust in Canton (43:53)
The year, 1974. The date, Dec. 21. The occasion, AFC Divisional Round playoff— with the winner advancing to the AFC Championship Game with the legendary Bill King calling the game on radio. The Miami Dolphins had made a habit of being here, playing in the AFC Championship Game the prior three seasons in succession. It was just expected that they'd be there under Don Shula. The Raiders, meanwhile, had plenty of success in that same time span under the legendary John Madden. But defeating the greatest team of the early ‘70s was quite a task. Though the Raiders were hosting the game in Oakland, defeating the mighty Dolphins would still count as an upset. As such, team officials, and others in Oakland, had gotten the word out to fans who were attending the game to make it a “blackout”. Not only did the fans show up and give AC/DC inspiration for a future song (no idea if that's true or not), but they were loud. Some Raiders staffers and players said it was the loudest they had ever heard it in the stadium. And that was during the pregame ceremonies. Once the kickoff occurred, they were silenced for a bit. Nat Moore returned the opening kickoff for a touchdown, forcing the fans to sit down and be quiet. The Dolphins had done what every road team since the dawn of competition has aimed to do: take the crowd out of the game. And it seemed that it was working awfully well for much of the first half. Though the Dolphins' three-headed monster at running back was mostly unsuccessful, Shula's defense stymied the Raiders' deep passing attack, by getting pressure on Kenny Stabler and playing physical with Fred Biletnikoff and Cliff Branch on the outside.

Howard Schnellenberger learned his trade from two of the all-time greats, Paul "Bear" Bryant and Don Shula, winning championships with each mentor. Schnellenberger then took the football torch that was passed to him and became a trans formative head coach at three universities. All three have now nominated him for the College Football Hall of Fame. For all of his personal triumphs, there have also been instances of crashing and burning. He was fired as head coach of the Baltimore Colts after a sideline showdown with the owner of the team. He walked away from the University of Miami to try to make his fortune in the ill-fated USFL. A move to the University of Oklahoma ended in humiliation. The coach talks about the wise decisions and the poor decisions he has made, and he shares the lessons he learned along the way. Schnellenberger's career has brought him into combat alongside or across the field from many of the greats. His high school teammate was the future Heisman Trophy winner and Green Bay Packer star Paul Hornung. Schnellenberger was an All-American player at Kentucky in 1952 at a time when players played both offense and defense. He later recruited or coached a stunning array of quarterbacks, including Joe Namath, Kenny Stabler, Jim Kelly, Bernie Kosar, Vinny Testaverde, Bert Jones, Roman Gabriel, Bob Griese and Earl Morrall. Schnellengerber served as offensive coordinator while helping Alabama and Bryant claim national championships in 1961, 1964 and 1965. His early career also included serving as offensive coordinator for Don Shula and the Miami Dolphins in 1972 during the only perfect season in NFL history. Schnellenberger took over a University of Miami program that was contemplating dropping the sport in 1979 and instead led them to 46 wins in 5 years and a national championship in 1983. He established a swagger at the U and set the school on a path to five national championships in two decades. He dabbled with Donald Trump at the upstart United States Football League that sued the NFL for antitrust violations. In 1985 he returned to his hometown and took over another struggling program at the University of Louisville. After three losing seasons, he built them into a football power. His time there was capped by a 10-1-1 record in 1990 that included a Fiesta Bowl victory over Alabama. He retired from coaching in 1995, having been part of four college national championships. Coach Schnellenbeger managed an encore performance, though, that is a crowning achievement. He came out of retirement in 1998 at age 64 to start a football program at Florida Atlantic University. His team became the youngest program ever to receive a bowl invitation. He won that game and was awarded the Sun Belt Conference Coach of the Year award. The next year his Owls won another bowl game, making the coach 6-0 and the winning-est undefeated coach in bowl history. Coach Schnellenberger retired again after the 2011 season, but not before building a 40,000 seat on-campus football stadium. A statue of the coach stands guard at the FAU stadium. In Louisville, a 60,000-seat stadium is part of the Howard L. Schnellenberger Football Complex that he fought to have built in that city. Schnellenberger saved football at two proud universities. He launched football at a third. He has sent more than 60 college stars on to professional football careers. His stories about those players and the secrets to his remarkable success are the subject of this memoir.

Sorry we had to take a week off last week, but we just had a lot of conflicts get in the way that prevented us from doing the podcast. We begin covering some NFL news, such as the latest on Jason Pierre Paul and his finger, the passing of Kenny Stabler, the numerous suspensions that have happened and more. We also get into some NBA free agency talk with the DeAndre Jordan fiasco and more. Anyway, we are back with our first NFL division preview of the season, where we do an AFC West preview. We have Steven Davis representing the Denver Broncos and Christopher Hale representing the Oakland Raiders. For each division preview, we are doing an interview with a fan from at least two of the teams in each division. For some divisions we might have every team represented and for some, it might only be two. It just depends on who is available. Randy goes into his Infield Fly segment discussing the new rules for the Homerun Derby and previewing the Cardinals and Pirates weekend series. Then to finish it off, we have our first NCAA Football Conference preview, where we do a Big XII preview. Randy discusses what he thinks of the teams and gives his thoughts on a final ranking for them as well.
