Wann wollen wir ernten, wann muss man also anbauen? Grateful and humbled to announce Episode 4 of the “Quest for Success Podcast” w/ the great Jim Short. We caught up with Jim and had an absolutely incredible and humbling conversation with the former @nevadafootball standout, High School Teacher, coach and one of the greatest, most humble men you'll ever meet. We call him coach, teacher, friend and a role model.—Jim Short grew up in the small town of Poplar, California. When Jim entered Monache High School in 1977, his childhood friend Jeff Brown was already blazing the sports trail, so Jim did what Jeff had, and became a three-sport athlete. By his sophomore year, Jim was playing at the varsity level in football, wrestling, and baseball. By his senior year, he was becoming an accomplished athlete and earning recognition in the East Yosemite League and as an All-Valley recipient. He received the Double M Award, or Male Athlete of the Year, that same year. Having been positively influenced by many special men and women at Monache, he aspired to play at the college level. Signing with Cal Poly Pomona, he began playing under the famed NFL quarterback, Roman Gabriel. Jim was named first team all-conference after his sophomore year. When Pomona decided to drop its football program, Short took the initiative to keep on playing and transferred to the University of Nevada. While there, they won the Big Sky Championship under the College Hall of Fame Coach, Chris Ault, and Jim earned many additional individual player awards including Player of the Week against Boise State and the Hammer Award his senior year. Jim also played alongside future NFL players before earning his college degree. Jim currently lives just outside of Porterville with his wife, Quinanne. They have three daughters, Devin, Zander, and Bryn, all of whom also graduated from Monache. Jim teaches and coaches at Monache. He was honored to coach Monache's first state wrestling champion in 2006 and is currently the girls' wrestling head coach.—Listen on any podcasting platform.INSTAGRAM | https://www.instagram.com/questforsuccess_/YouTube | https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC0IMr0SYn7XbkEMcivFyeAg/featured

EPISODE SUMMARY I know that I will be getting a lot of feedback for this topic, and perhaps rightly so. I may even receive a lot of arguments as well. So be it. But let me begin by stating that this subject has at least some amount of stretching to it. For example, no one really believes that some of the quarterbacks that I am listing here actually have a shot at becoming a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame. All I am saying with this episode is that there is a category or two where these quarterbacks did manage to excel, and as such, they deserve at least some recognition over the span of several decades in time. Maybe not in the Hall of Fame, but in some sort of acceptance and honor, nonetheless. I'm just going to begin by listing these 1970s quarterbacks, in a non-alphabetical manner, and in a random way, by their names. I will then discuss with you, their achievements. Those signal callers are: John Hadl, Ken Anderson, John Brodie, Earl Morrall, Craig Morton, and Roman Gabriel.......... Read the entire episode blog post and check out some other cool info regarding this https://sportshistorynetwork.com/football/nfl/quarterbacks-from-the-1970s-who-maybe-should-be-in-the-hall-of-fame (episode here). https://www.newspapers.com/freetrial/?xid=2229&duration=semiannual&subtype=extra&ft=true (Get a 1-week free trial to Newspapers.com to learn about this topic and so much more.) Welcome everyone to Beyond The Dugout Episode 20 with Softball New Zealand's legendary Slugger Donny Hale 28th August 2021.    Tonight's episode is an exclusive to first announce Donny's Hales induction to the SNZ Hall of Fame!! This episode is more like a version of this is your life…. With a bunch of surprises for Donny as we go along. We hope you all enjoy Donny's story as he has dazzled fans all over the world with his Massive home runs!! For 20 years, the ‘Halestorm' - three-time Black Sox world champion Donny Hale - was of the most feared and respected softball sluggers in the world. Donny – who is still playing professionally in Japan today in his mid-40s - drifted into softball as a youngster in Auckland after being star-struck watching New Zealand power hitters Ian Stringer and Murray McLean blasting home runs in a television game in the 1980s. Drawn to Mt Roskill's Fearon Park, Donny set the scene for a career as a hitter by slamming three homes in his first game as a 10-year-old. Like a lot of other talented Black Sox athletes, he first made his mark for Auckland, and was selected as such for his Black Sox tour to North America in 1994. There was a logjam of pitching talent in New Zealand then, and it took a couple of years for Donny to resurface in a Black Sox jersey. The 1.95m all-rounder reinvented himself as a long ball hitter after initially adding 15kg in the gym to give him more speed on the mound. “I decided that hitting the ball was more fun,'' Donny said in Relentless, the book devoted to the Black Sox's 2004 world championship title victory. “I wanted to be the guy who hit the home runs.'' For the next 15 or so years, he was just that – a regular in the middle of a power-packed New Zealand batting unit collectively acclaimed as the best the game has seen. Donny – who earned 110 Black Sox caps - went on to dominate pitchers in elite competitions in New Zealand, North America and Japan, winning titles everywhere he went. For all his innate physical gifts, Donny was also renowned for being a student of the game, particularly the art of hitting a ball long and far.  He talked at length with Mark Sorenson about the mental aspects of hitting and gleaned a lot of insights too from playing and coaching overseas. At one point, Donny was even writing a regular column about batting for a Japanese softball magazine. While power was Donny's most obvious asset, former Black Sox coach Don Tricker once said it was his bat speed that set him apart. “I think he has the potential to be the best batter we have ever produced,'' Tricker said in 2004. “Every time he hits the ball, he's a legitimate home run threat.'' Hale hammered two home runs in his first world title winning tournament with the Black Sox in 2000 and was also in the heart of the line-up for the 2004 triumph in Christchurch, where he batted .444. Donny's final gold medal came at home in Auckland in 2013 and he won his final cap a season later, 20 years after his first. In his prime, he won the New Zealand Player of the Year award four times – including three years in a row from 2001 to 2003. A regular visitor to the International Softball Congress tournament – North America's prestige club competition – Donny's name still features prominently on the honours board. He is tied for the most home runs at a tournament (7, shared with Jarrad Martin and Patrick Shannon) and for most RBIs (17, shared with Wayne Laulu). He is also in a three-way tie at the top of the charts for most home runs in a game (3). Donny's dominance was underlined in 2012 when he was named MVP after 17 RBIs and a .529 average in leading Ontario's Broken Bow Travelers to a third consecutive title. Back home, Donny won countless national interclub titles with Ramblers and national provincial crowns with Auckland, serving as player-coach in some successful campaigns. Japan has long been the base for Donny and his long-time partner, former White Sox outfielder Sina Hunkin, but he has recently returned to give back some of his vast knowledge of the game as assistant-coach for the NZ White Sox. It's a completion of a circle as Donny and White Sox head coach Roman Gabriel were teammates from junior level right through to the Black Sox.   So sit back and enjoy Beyond The Dugout with hosts Jason Gerbes aka Chopper & Damian Michael Patrick Collins bringing weekly guests from the best that Fastpitch Softball has ever seen.    Beyond The Dugout podcast available everywhere possible like Spotify Apple Podcasts Google Podcasts iHeartRadio iTunes Podbean

This week's guest star is Jim Nabors, better know to most people as Gomer Pyle. We discuss CBS' focus on rural comedies in the 1960's, led by their intractable programming executive James T. Aubrey. Doug also talks about how uncomfortable he is with Nabors operatic singing style, reminiscent of musical performers from the 1930's and 40's like Jeanette McDonald and Nelson Eddy. Plus, another vignette from Doug's childhood as he recounts hearing a rumor that Jim Nabors and Los Angeles Ram's quarterback Roman Gabriel were married.   Credits: The Muppet Show - The Walt Disney Company  FAIR USE ACT DISCLAIMER Fair Use: Copyright Disclaimer under section 107 of the Copyright Act of 1976, allowance is made for "fair use" such as criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching, scholarship, education and research. Though a diminutive 6’1 and with merely average arm strength, Rams quarterback Case Keenum hardly has star qualities—though General Manager Les Snead and Head Coach Jeff Fisher might disagree. On this episode, we take a look at the team’s decision to use the first round tender on Keenum as well as the flurry of Rams activities during the first two weeks of 2016 NFL free agency. We’ll also explore the 1969 film, The Undefeated, starring John Wayne, Rock Hudson and an L.A. Ram who seemed typecast for the role of the modern quarterback: Roman Gabriel. Joshua Neuman is joined by The Hollywood Reporter’s Eriq Gardner on this non-diminutive episode of The Greatest Show on Grass.

THE "RIGHT HAND MAN" OF BEAR BRYANT AT THE UNIVERSITY OF ALABAMA THE "RIGHT HAND MAN" OF DON SHULA DURING THE 1972 MIAMI DOLPHINS PERFECT SEASON  Coach Howard Schnellenberger, Passing the Torch: Building Winning Football Programs...with a Dose of Swagger Along the Way. CAREER HIGHLIGHTS One of the most colorful and successful football coaches of the last half century is ready to tell his story for the first time. Howard Schnellenberger learned his trade from two of the all-time greats, Paul "Bear" Bryant and Don Shula, winning championships with each mentor. Schnellenberger then took the football torch that was passed to him and became a trans formative head coach at three universities. All three have now nominated him for the College Football Hall of Fame. For all of his personal triumphs, there have also been instances of crashing and burning. He was fired as head coach of the Baltimore Colts after a sideline showdown with the owner of the team. He walked away from the University of Miami to try to make his fortune in the ill-fated USFL. A move to the University of Oklahoma ended in humiliation. The coach talks about the wise decisions and the poor decisions he has made, and he shares the lessons he learned along the way. Schnellenberger's career has brought him into combat alongside or across the field from many of the greats. His high school teammate was the future Heisman Trophy winner and Green Bay Packer star Paul Hornung. Schnellenberger was an All-American player at Kentucky in 1952 at a time when players played both offense and defense. He later recruited or coached a stunning array of quarterbacks, including Joe Namath, Kenny Stabler, Jim Kelly, Bernie Kosar, Vinny Testaverde, Bert Jones, Roman Gabriel, Bob Griese and Earl Morrall. Schnellengerber served as offensive coordinator while helping Alabama and Bryant claim national championships in 1961, 1964 and 1965. His early career also included serving as offensive coordinator for Don Shula and the Miami Dolphins in 1972 during the only perfect season in NFL history. Schnellenberger took over a University of Miami program that was contemplating dropping the sport in 1979 and instead led them to 46 wins in 5 years and a national championship in 1983. He established a swagger at the U and set the school on a path to five national championships in two decades. He dabbled with Donald Trump at the upstart United States Football League that sued the NFL for antitrust violations. In 1985 he returned to his hometown and took over another struggling program at the University of Louisville. After three losing seasons, he built them into a football power. His time there was capped by a 10-1-1 record in 1990 that included a Fiesta Bowl victory over Alabama. He retired from coaching in 1995, having been part of four college national championships. Coach Schnellenbeger managed an encore performance, though, that is a crowning achievement. He came out of retirement in 1998 at age 64 to start a football program at Florida Atlantic University. His team became the youngest program ever to receive a bowl invitation. He won that game and was awarded the Sun Belt Conference Coach of the Year award. The next year his Owls won another bowl game, making the coach 6-0 and the winning-est undefeated coach in bowl history. Coach Schnellenberger retired again after the 2011 season, but not before building a 40,000 seat on-campus football stadium. A statue of the coach stands guard at the FAU stadium. In Louisville, a 60,000-seat stadium is part of the Howard L. Schnellenberger Football Complex that he fought to have built in that city. Schnellenberger saved football at two proud universities. He launched football at a third. He has sent more than 60 college stars on to professional football careers. His stories about those players and the secrets to his remarkable success are the subject of this memoir.
