THE PRICE: What It Takes to Win in College Football's Era of Chaos w/ Sports Writer John Talty AZ TRT - S05 EP35 (251) 9-8-2024 What We Learned This Week NCAA fought lawsuits for years to avoid paying the players, had chance to solve the issue Sonny Vacarro (Nike fame) convinced Ed O'Bannon of UCLA to sue, led to NIL NCAA cannot enforce rules on NIL, free for all Transfer Portal happens 2x / year, can change teams 2x in the same year! Nick Saban quit at Alabama because of the chaos Likely resolution is a Salary Cap in College Football Guest: John Talty, CBS Sports College Football Writer College Football Segment with John Talty on What It Takes to Win in This Era of Chaos in College Football and Their New Book THE PRICE “THE PRICE: What It Takes to Win in College Football's Era of Chaos” (Harper, August 27, 2024) by six-time New York Times best-selling author Armen Keteyian and award-winning national college football reporter John Talty, is an in-depth and revealing investigation into the tumultuous state of college football—and the financial, physical, emotional, and psychological toll taken on everyone involved. Keteyian and Talty pull from over 200 interviews to exposes everything from the fall of the Pac-12 to the exploitation of underprivileged young athletes. Their research culminates into a meticulously constructed portrait of the NCAA's crumbling foundations and new inside information on college football's biggest names—Nick Saban, Jim Harbaugh, Kirby Smart, Jimbo Fisher, and Lane Kiffin. Two of the nation's most respected sports journalists team up for a vital, hard-hitting investigation into the tumultuous state of big-time college football. We are living in the Wild West of college sports. Name, Image and Likeness endorsements, the transfer portal, collectives, conference realignment, the powerful influence of media companies have all rendered the notion of amateur athletics a quaint relic of the past, replaced by a Brave New World where money and self-interest rule. About the Authors Armen Keteyian is an eleven-time Emmy Award-winning journalist and the author or coauthor of six New York Times bestsellers, including The System and Tiger Woods. He lives in Connecticut. John Talty is the national college football writer for CBS Sports and 247Sports and the author of the Wall Street Journal bestseller The Leadership Secrets of Nick Saban. He lives in Alabama. https://www.cbssports.com/writers/john-talty/ Here are some of the reveals in THE PRICE: Exclusive behind-the-scenes reporting on the bitter legal battle between University of Michigan head football coach Jim Harbaugh and the NCAA, and his chilly relationship with athletic director Warde Manuel An inside look at Nick Saban's final year in college football and what ultimately drove him away from the sport New detailed, behind-the-scenes reporting surrounding the shocking demise of the Pac-12 Inside the feud between Nick Saban and Jimbo Fisher The bombshell details behind a top college quarterback demanding tens of thousands of dollars from his head coach in order for him to play in an important game Exclusive reporting on the rise of Arizona football under head coach Jedd Fisch The behind-the-scenes story of Julian Sayin, a top-rated quarterback in the Class of 2024 and his decision to play for Nick Saban and the University of Alabama – a decision gone wrong when Saban suddenly retired A major profile on quite possibly the sport's biggest power broker: The uber successful yet mysterious agent Jimmy Sexton A rare interview with controversial Auburn University trustee and mega-booster Jimmy Rane, the only billionaire in the state of Alabama Behind-the-scenes reporting on the rise and fall of Jimbo Fisher in College Station Unique access to and interviews with high-ranking members of the NCAA Enforcement staff, including Vice President Jon Duncan The inside story on Jaden Rashada and his college-aged agent who sent the sport into a tizzy when his $13.8 million deal to Florida blew up spectacularly Exclusive interviews with former NCAA president Mark Emmert who describes a broken system, assesses the mistakes he made during twelve-plus years guiding the organization, and his surprising predictions on where it's all headed. Notes: Seg 1 The book is a deep dive into college football, the NIL and paying players. John got into sports at age 14 writing for scouts.com. He has been in the business 20 years already, and covering college football for the last 15 years. NCAA had their chance to change the system about playing paying players, but fought it for years. NCAA had beat prior lawsuits for years, where they would either win or pay very small amounts. Sonny Vaccaro of Nike shoe fame had a moral reckoning. In the early 2000s he convinced UCLA basketball player Ed O'Bannon to sue. Ultimately this partially led to the NIL - multiple lawsuits, and eventually California overturned the rule that the players need to be paid. Ed O'Bannon was the face of the lawsuit. NCAA does not make money off football. They do make $ billions off of basketball and other sports. A school might make $200 million in a year. Problem with the NIL - now that you have to pay players, lesser or non-revenue producing sports could be canceled. Example: women's sports like softball or volleyball. NCAA cannot enforce rules on NIL, it's a total free-for-all, wild west with kids switching schools for paychecks. Seg 2 The transfer portal is two times a year. A player can literally change schools every year, and even two times in the same year. Currently colleges are pushing for a salary cap, and this could be the likely solution. Coach Nick, Sabin of Alabama quit after the 2023 season because of the chaos. Saban is someone who is all about control and likes to have his day planned to the minute. Part of the reason he quit was because of the breakdown structure and players jumping ship. Saban worked on agreements, no promises, the players he recruited must work hard. Money portion blows out that plan.Game is changing rapidly and he decided to get out before it got bad. He did not want to leave Alabama Football in a bad position. Jim Harbaugh of Michigan was busted on NCAA rules during 2019 in Covid. He received a multi-year penalty because they felt he was lying and denied the cover-up. Similar situation for Bruce Pearl of Tennessee, basketball coach busted for lying about a barbecue with athletes. Boosters spend $ millions currently on college programs. Unsure to see the future of where boosters will be in the new NIL or salary cap system. Salary Cap system may be coming in the next one or two years, 2025 or 2026 and a revenue sharing plan also. Currently there is a potential settlement in legal action dealing with the whole issue as well as Title IV. Locked On Big 12 - Daily College Football & Basketball Podcast
According to CBS sports, In the futuristic realm of 2031, the concept of birthing a revolutionary "super-league" paradigm in college football gleams with brilliance and feasibility. This epoch coincides perfectly with the expiration of prevailing media rights contracts for major conferences and the esteemed College Football Playoff. Termed as "coterminous," deriving its essence from the Latin roots signifying "shared boundaries," this juncture presents an opportune moment for restructuring collegiate football ownership, fostering symbiotic relationships between educational institutions and their media affiliates.Yet, the current epoch seems ill-fated for such transformative endeavors. Insights gleaned from discussions at the Final Four in Glendale, Arizona, indicate a prevailing sentiment of temporal incongruence with the proposed "super league" notion. Initially broached by a consortium of collegiate leaders, this visionary undertaking mirrors the metamorphosis witnessed by the NFL in the 1960s, under the sagacious guidance of former commissioner Pete Rozelle. Rozelle's visionary persuasions led to the equitable distribution of revenue among NFL franchises, a precedent upheld through decades, even enduring Supreme Court scrutiny.Amidst the looming uncertainties engulfing collegiate sports' trajectory, the 20 luminaries spearheading the "College Sports Tomorrow" initiative brace themselves for a formidable clash against the envisioned futures advocated by the Big Ten and SEC. West Virginia University president and esteemed CST member, Gordon Gee, articulates a resolute stance against relegating pivotal decisions solely to commissioners and athletic directors, advocating for a holistic university perspective in charting the course of collegiate athletics.Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! He has covered every World Series game of the last two decades for The New York Times. He started his career as a teenager, interviewing players for a homemade magazine in the early 1990s. He attended Vanderbilt University on the Grantland Rice/Fred Russell sportswriting scholarship, then covered the Angels for the Riverside (Calif.) Press-Enterprise and the Mariners for the Seattle Post-Intelligencer. He joined The New York Times in 2000, covering the Mets for two seasons, the Yankees for eight, and serving as the national baseball writer since 2010. From the New York Times bestselling author of K: A History of Baseball in Ten Pitches, a highly entertaining, revelatory history of the World Series, filled with gripping behind-the-scenes stories from 117 years of the Fall Classic. The World Series is the most enduring showcase in American team sports. It's the place where legends are made, where celebration and devastation can hinge on a fly ball off a foul pole or a grounder beneath a first baseman's glove. And there's no one better to bring this rich history to life than New York Times national baseball columnist Tyler Kepner, whose bestselling book about pitching, K, was lauded as “Michelangelo explaining the brush strokes on the Sistine Chapel” by Newsday. In seven scintillating chapters, Kepner delivers an indelible portrait of baseball's signature event. He digs deep for essential tales dating back to the beginning in 1903, adding insights from Hall of Famers like Reggie Jackson, Mike Schmidt, Jim Palmer, Dennis Eckersley and many others who have thrived – and failed – when it mattered most. Why do some players, like Madison Bumgarner, Derek Jeter and David Ortiz, crave the pressure? How do players handle a dream that comes up short? What's it like to manage in the World Series, and what are the secrets of building a champion? Kepner celebrates unexpected heroes like Bill Wambsganss, who pulled off an unassisted triple play in 1920, probes the mysteries behind magic moments (Did Babe Ruth call his shot in 1932? How could Eckersley walk Mike Davis to get to Kirk Gibson in 1988?) and busts some long-time myths (the 1919 Reds were much better than the Black Sox, anyway). The result is a vivid portrait of baseball at its finest and most intense, filled with humor, lore, analysis and fascinating stories. THE GRANDEST STAGE is the ultimate history of the World Series, the perfect gift for all the fans who feel their hearts pounding in the bottom of the ninth inning of Game Seven. You live in the NFL.' – Al Davis, Raiders Owner ‘You can't connect the dots looking forwards…but backwards.' – Steve Jobs, Apple ‘There is winning, and there is misery.' – Coach Bill Parcells Canton, Ohio – the NFL is formed in 1920 with 11 teams Mike Lombardi worked in the NFL 20+ years. He worked with some of the NFL grades like Bill Walsh, Al Davis and Bill Belichick. He agrees with Al Davis that you definitely live in the NFL. It is dark when you go to work and it is dark when you get home. NFL started in 1920, but it wasn't until the late 1950s that it was on TV and started to become a very popular national game. From the 1920s to the 1950s college was more popular than the NFL. People knew their college teams and football was more of a regional sport. The Five White Oaks of the NFL These are 5 coaches that Mike has identified that helped to modernize the game. The white oak phrase comes from the movie The Shawshank Redemption. The tree is a symbol of redemption with the deepest branches, like a coaching tree in the NFL. Red Blaik and the Lonely End Coach Red Blaik coached at Dartmouth in the Ivy League and then Army. He is known for the lonely end, or spreading out the wide receivers and using the whole field to play. He coached in the 1940s in the 1950s. He had 2 very famous assistants at Army - Tom Landry coaching the Defense and Vince Lombardi coaching the offense. Landry went on to coach the Cowboys and Lombardi went on to coach the Green Bay Packers. Both won Super Bowls and are in the Hall of Fame. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Earl_Blaik https://goldenrankings.com/footballshortstoryLonelyEnd.htm Clark Shaughnessy and the T Formation He coached in the 1940s through the 1960s and is known for modernizing the single wing formation and how players lineup in formations. He created the first real modern passing formations with an emphasis on the quarterback, not the running back being the most important player. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clark_Shaughnessy https://www.latimes.com/archives/la-xpm-1990-12-25-sp-7207-story.html Paul Brown's Operating System Paul Brown of the Cleveland Browns, and later the Cincinnati Bengals He created the operating system and really turned coaching into a profession with specialties. He taught a culture of leadership and instruction. His most famous assistant was Bill Walsh who will go on to the Hall of Fame as the coach of the 49ers and creator of the West Coast offense which was started under Brown with the Bengals So many of the modern things we see with football were created by Paul Brown - like the headset for the coaches to call in the play to the quarterback, how play-calling was done and the playbook. He also organized the system for scouting, how you pick players, 40 yard dash and how to profile players. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paul_Brown https://operations.nfl.com/gameday/technology/technology-and-the-game/ https://www.daytondailynews.com/sports/ohio-state-tcu-one-hall-fame-coach-left-mark-buckeyes-horned-frogs/oXTclNvnXMkadYBk4zSdWJ/ Seg 3 Coaches continued Sid Gilman and the Long Ball Sid Gilman was an assistant with Red Blaik Worked with Fanatical Francis Schmidt of Ohio State wanted to pass all the time, but not accepted in Ohio Developed numerical passing game, passing and play design https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sid_Gillman https://www.footballxos.com/sid-gillman-need-know-man-throw-forward-pass/ West Coast Bill Walsh West coast offense was a philosophy based on ball control offense Pass the ball early to score, run the ball later to keep the lead Y motion passing game, QB footwork, and timing of routes Script plays to start game Horizontal passing game, the nickel and dime pass with high percentage throws to get the ball to the receiver in space, so then they can run after the catch https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bill_Walsh_(American_football_coach) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/West_Coast_offense https://bleacherreport.com/articles/1087386-football-101-breaking-down-the-west-coast-offense TV & the Power of the Brand of the NFL TV in the 1970s, there were 3 channels. The NFL Commissioner, Pete wanted to get one national game airing weekly. He contacted all three networks and eventually struck a deal with ABC for Monday night football. Howard Cosell was the fire brand polarizing host. At the time bowling was the Monday night event, and football ended that. Miller Brewing was a regional brand who advertised on Monday Night Football and become a major national beer brand. Scouting Scouting is all about elimination, never about finding. You have to create a set of criteria for players, a profile of the player you want. Just like the FBI creates profiles for criminals. You look for those traits on your profile list. You know what you're looking for and have a system for finding that player. You eliminate the players who don't fit the profile to whittle it down and find the right player. It's not random or chaotic but an organized system of picking players. What are you looking for in a QB? Per Mike, the QB has to have instincts and can play the position. Also needs to be a leader and have a work ethic. The QB must be the hardest worker on the team. With those instincts the quarterback has to see what others don't see on the field. Good quarterbacks are born with these instincts. They want to attract big sporting events like golf tournaments, business conventions, the Super Bowl, college bowl games, or an Amazon shipping site. This has a huge economic impact for a city, plus it gives it constant media and PR when events are located at that city. For example Phoenix is hosting the Super Bowl, and phoenix gets mentioned hundreds of times in a week on TV or thousands, and millions on the Internet and blogs. It is very difficult to buy the type of PR that you get from media coverage on the big events. This is why cities like Miami, Dallas, Los Angeles, San Fran, Vegas and Phoenix are always being talked about is destinations. There is a lot of coordination involved along with public investment to get these major events at a city. The governor is involved, county people, and the mayor who usually takes the lead. Cities have departments of economic development specifically for these tasks. It requires often a vote from the public, as well as public investment. What is going to be the ROI on having an event. What type of tax revenue do you get from travel, visitors, and hotels. On top of that there is community pride, so then people want to move to that city. Rick is the editor of the sports handbook, and had numerous sports figures write a chapter, and also Coach K wrote the forward. He worked with Jerry Colangelo, Paul Tagliabue former NFL commissioner, Ryan Anderson of ASU fame, and Derek called of the baseball Diamondbacks. Sports, sporting events and even events around sports have become a CTV. An example of this is the NFL draft or the NFL combine. Sports transcends TV, and becomes a worldwide global event. Radio city music Hall in New York used to host the NFL draft every year. They let that deal lapse and now the NFL draft is a traveling tour every year. NBA free agency, NFL free agency, has made these sports year-long events. People talk about the trades and the draft often in the off-season. In 2010 it was a major TV event on ESPN called the decision when the LeBron chose the Miami Heat in free agency. Full Show: HERE Seg. 1 – Pete Rozelle and the History of TV & the NFL https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pete_Rozelle Alvin Ray "Pete" Rozelle (/roʊˈzɛl/; March 1, 1926 – December 6, 1996) was an American businessman and executive. Rozelle served as the commissioner of the National Football League (NFL) for nearly thirty years, from January 1960 until his retirement in November 1989. He became the youngest commissioner in NFL history at just the age of 33. He is credited with making the NFL into one of the most successful sports leagues in the world.[1][2] During his tenure, Rozelle saw the NFL grow from 12 teams to 28, oversaw the creation of large television-rights deals and the creation of Monday Night Football in 1970, oversaw the 1970 AFL–NFL merger and the creation of the Super Bowl, and helped the NFL move from a twelve-game schedule to a sixteen-game schedule. By the time of his retirement, many people considered him the most powerful commissioner in sports.[3] He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1985. History of the NFL on TV https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_the_National_Football_League_on_television Later in 1955, NBC became the televised home of the NFL Championship Game, paying $100,000 to the league. The 1958 NFL Championship Game played at Yankee Stadium between the Baltimore Colts and the New York Giants went into sudden death overtime. This game, since dubbed the "Greatest Game Ever Played," was watched widely throughout the country and is credited with increasing the popularity of professional football in the late 1950s and early 1960s. CBS began to televise selected NFL regular season games in 1956. By 1959, big-market teams such as the Bears and Giants had all their games televised, but small-market ones like the Packers and 49ers still did not. Upon becoming NFL commissioner, Pete Rozelle worked to ensure that every team got all its games on TV. Super Bowl 1 The first AFL-NFL World Championship Game was played on January 15, 1967 between the NFL champion Packers and the AFL champion Chiefs. As CBS held the rights to nationally televise NFL games and NBC had the rights to broadcast AFL matches, it was decided that both would cover that first game. The next three AFL-NFL World Championship Games, the initial Super Bowls, were then divided by the two networks: CBS broadcast Super Bowls II and IV while NBC covered III. Monday Night Football ABC also agreed to televise one regular season game per week on Monday night. ABC aired its first edition of Monday Night Football on September 21, 1970. MNF pushed the limits of football coverage with its halftime highlights segment, occasional banter from Howard Cosell and Don Meredith, and celebrity guests such as John Lennon, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Bill Clinton. During its 36-year run on ABC, Monday Night Football consistently ranked among the most popular prime time broadcasts each week during the season. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heidi_Game The Heidi Game or Heidi Bowl is the name given to a 1968 American Football League (AFL) game between the Oakland Raiders and the visiting New York Jets. The contest, held on November 17, 1968, was notable for its exciting finish, in which Oakland scored two touchdowns in the final minute to win the game 43–32. However, a decision by NBC, the game's television broadcaster, to break away from its coverage on the East Coast to broadcast the television film Heidi caused many viewers to miss the Raiders' comeback. https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/tv/tv-news/how-much-broadcast-networks-depend-sports-1235143456/ How Much Sports Matter (or Don't) to Network Viewership Fox and NBC got more than a quarter of their primetime audience this season from live sports, while ABC and CBS are less dependent. 5/2022 Fox is on pace to finish third in total viewers among the broadcast networks this season, with an average primetime audience of about 4.7 million viewers. The network can thank its various sports rights packages — the NFL and Major League Baseball chief among them — for that position. Stripping out sports from Fox's primetime ratings for the season would put the network at under 3 million nightly viewers — 2.96 million, to be precise. Fox is something of an outlier among its fellow broadcasters, Nielsen data from the last two seasons show. NBC also owes a sizable portion of their viewership to sports, while ABC likes to tout its viewership independent of it. CBS occupies something of a middle ground. Nonetheless, the outsized effect sports can have on network audiences speaks to why rights to such programming have skyrocketed in recent years. With live sports consistently the most reliable way to get people to watch linear TV (and the commercials that come with it), networks pay hefty premiums to secure those rights and the audiences that tend to follow. https://www.americangaming.org/resources/how-much-does-the-nfl-stand-to-gain-from-legal-sports-betting/ The NFL's annual revenue may increase by $2.3 billion a year due to widely available, legal, regulated sports betting, according to new AGA research. The study analyzes the revenue streams that legal sports betting could generate for the NFL: revenue as a result of spending from betting operators on advertising, data and sponsorship, and revenue generated as a result of increased consumption of the league's media and purchasing of products. https://www.sportsmanagementdegreehub.com/fantasy-football-industry/ Fantasy football is an $18.6 billion market. That's $6 billion more than the current estimated NFL revenue, and 4.5 times the current value of the NFL's top flight team, the Dallas Cowboys. This deal, which could last until 2032, was the largest among NFL broadcasting packages in the United States. The second most lucrative deal was Fox's package for Sunday NFC, which had an annual worth of nearly 2.3 billion U.S. dollars. https://www.foxbusiness.com/sports/nfl-worth-revenue-team-values While it's difficult to place a valuation on the NFL as a whole, the league's 32 franchises were worth a combined sum of more than $91 billion as of last September, according to Forbes. The average NFL franchise has a valuation of $2.86 billion, up 11 percent compared to one year ago and higher than the average valuations in Major League Baseball, the National Basketball Association and the National Hockey League. The Dallas Cowboys are the most valuable NFL franchise, with an estimated valuation of $5.5 billion and $950 million in annual revenue. The Buffalo Bills are the least valuable NFL franchise, with an estimated valuation of $1.9 billion. Welcome back to the Bill Bradley Collective, where it is the first Tuesday in May and that means one thing (no, not the tired *NSYNC meme), its rivalry week and In this installment we present the saga of Al Davis and Pete Rozelle. Quite possibly the most significant off-field feud in NFL history, Rozelle and Davis are two of the architects of the National Football League behemoth as we know it, but never did these two contrasting visionaries work well in concert with one another. Join us as we start at the beginning, as Rozelle rises to NFL commissionership at a young age as both his league and American professional football are about to grab a lion share of the sports marketplace. Davis enters the fray as a pivotal figure in the upstart AFL, as both league commissioner and later owner of the Oakland Raiders. The two rival leagues merge in 1970 due in large part to their individual efforts, but the contention stayed live and well. The 1970s and 80s brought it to a fever pitch, where our protagonists spent plenty of time on opposing sides of the courtroom, over both Davis' Raider players and the renegade owner's desire to relocate the franchise from Oakland to Los Angeles in a famed anti-trust case. All the backstory, detail and legacy: it's Al Davis v. Pete Rozelle, this week on the Bill Bradley Collective.

EPISODE 105: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN A-Block (1:45) SPECIAL COMMENT: The Taliban Caucus lights the Republican Party and the House of Representatives on fire, while on his first day, the New Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries perfectly whips his members to do literally do nothing more than bring their popcorn and watch everybody from Gaetz to McCarthy burn, baby, burn. It was a beautiful thing, and it left the full range of fascists from Tucker Carlson to Rep. Byron Donalds having to cobble together the nonsensical sophistry that their self-defenestration was actually democracy in action. If Jeffries can manage to keep the Democrats from reverting to their natural desire to do ill-timed good on behalf of the institution rather than let the Republicans shoot themselves again today, he will have won the 118th Congress no matter which Liz Truss the GOP eventually settles on in place of the wounded McCarthy. B-Block (15:15) SPECIAL COMMENT No. 2: There is the tragedy of Damar Hamlin of the Buffalo Bills, and then there is the disgusting reality that the National Football League is now trying to gaslight us. OF COURSE the league intended to resume Monday night's game even after the stricken player fell. And now the NFL has lied about it and sleazily blamed Joe Buck, Suzy Kolber and all of ESPN, to cover up its own insensitivity and callousness. This is, of course, the history of the NFL, which did the wrong thing after JFK was assassinated, and after Mayor George Moscone and Councilman Harvey Milk were assassinated hours before a Monday Night Football game in San Francisco, and after it was told flights could not be guaranteed to get its players and media to games the weekend after 9/11. But this lie makes the Hamlin nightmare even worse - as does the rank exploitation of it by the anti-vaccine conspiracy theorists, who spit on the memories of Chuck Hughes and J.V. Cain and Hank Gathers and so many athletes who died on the field, from cardiac distress. (30:54) THE WORST PERSONS IN THE WORLD: Trump and Michael Flynn are no match for Congressman-Elect George Santos. C-Block (36:09) THINGS I PROMISED NOT TO TELL: In 1973, Charles Crawford was interviewing me for his TV news story from one of the earliest baseball card shows. EPISODE 82: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN A-Block (1:44) SPECIAL COMMENT: OK maybe I am. (1:58) Trump has about as bad a day as you can have in court and not be Al Pacino in the movie "And Justice For All." But first, I'm worried about The Washington Post profile of new Trump Special Counsel Jack Smith and my haunting fear he is there to run out the clock on behalf of Merrick Garland. A former colleague is quoted as saying "It was understood that the fastest way for a case to die was to give it to (Jack Smith's) Public Integrity Section." (3:00) Happily, though the Post gave not the slightest hint of it, the guy who said that is not just a revenge-obsessed right wing nut job but the worst kind: one who thinks he's an impartial analyst. (6:07) So we can look instead at Trump's FIVE legal setbacks in one day: on the tax case at the Supreme Court (and what Dems can do with the taxes with only 41 days until the GOP takes the house); at the hearing to dismiss the Special Master from the Nuclear Documents Kleptomania case; at Lindsey Graham's Grand Jury appearance in Georgia; at the efforts to revitalize Manhattan's Stormy Daniels hush money case; and at the impending SECOND lawsuit by E. Jean Carroll. No comment from Trump Attorney Lionel Hutz. B-Block (12:40) EVERY DOG HAS ITS DAY: Max in North Carolina (13:40) POSTSCRIPTS TO THE NEWS: Yes, you didn't imagine it. The 2nd Woman produced a tape of Herschel Walker phoning her and saying "this is your stud farm calling, you big sex puppy you," and then he said something much dumber live on Fox News. Herschel's Erection Election plus the AP taking its "Russian missiles in Poland" screw-up and making it much worse and Bolsonaro contesting after all (19:29) IN SPORTS: Lionel Messi's Employers upset Lionel Messi's Team at the World Cup: It's A Messi Situation, plus the Rob Thomson surprise, and what a fan did to Pete Rozelle the day he wouldn't cancel the NFL schedule even after the JFK Assassination (23:14) THE WORST PERSONS IN THE WORLD: Bothsidesist Ashley Parker and GOP Talking Point Merchant Katherine Herridge of CBS can't compete with producer Stew Peters whose movie about supposed deaths after Covid vaccinations "DIED SUDDENLY" actually shows people who a) didn't get vaccinated b) didn't die and c) didn't do anything suddenly. Ladies and gentlemen: It's the famous "SOCCER BREAKDOWN.":See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
An important but surprisingly little-remembered story in the history of pro football - and a turning point in the city of New Orleans' eventually successful pursuit of an NFL franchise - is the subject of this week's hugely intriguing conversation with Erin Grayson Sapp, author of "Moving the Chains: The Civil Rights Protest That Saved the Saints And Transformed New Orleans". From the book's dust-jacket: We remember the 1966 birth of the New Orleans Saints as a shady quid pro quo between the NFL commissioner and a Louisiana congressman. Moving the Chains is the untold story of the athlete protest that necessitated this backroom deal, as New Orleans scrambled to respond to a very public repudiation of the racist policies that governed the city. In the decade that preceded the 1965 athlete walkout, a reactionary backlash had swept through Louisiana, bringing with it a host of new segregation laws and enough social strong-arming to quash any complaints, even from suffering sports promoters. Nationwide protests had assailed the Tulane Green Wave, the Sugar Bowl, and the AFL's preseason stop-offs, and only legal loopholes and a lot of luck kept football alive in the city. Still, live it did, and in January 1965, locals believed they were just a week away from landing their own pro franchise. All they had to do was pack Tulane Stadium for the city's biggest audition yet, the AFL All-Star game. Ultimately, all fifty-eight Black and white teammates walked out of the game to protest the town's lingering segregation practices and public abuse of Black players. Following that, love of the gridiron prompted and excused something out of sync with the city's branding: change. In less than two years, the Big Easy made enough progress to pass a blitz inspection by Black and white NFL officials and receive the long-desired expansion team. The story of the athletes whose bravery led to change quickly fell by the wayside. Locals framed desegregation efforts as proof that the town had been progressive and tolerant all along. Furthermore, when a handshake between Pete Rozelle and Hale Boggs gave America its first Super Bowl and New Orleans its own club, the city proudly clung to that version of events, never admitting the cleanup even took place.

This week on It Was a Thing on TV we're going back to school while getting ready for the Super Bowl as we sneak in a game of Wordle. First, it's 2006 and How I Met Your Mother was CBS' sophomore hit featuring 20- and 30-somethings. Why not follow that with a series with people around the same age who all went to school together decades earlier? It can't miss! It did. But at least most of the cast of this show went on to bigger and better things. Next, the game Wordle has taken the internet by storm. Many people don't realize that the game Wordle is similar to the Game Show Network show Lingo. Even fewer people realize that Lingo got its start as a Canadian production in 1987. Also, Greg makes a big declaration at the end of the minisode! Finally, it's time for our annual look at different happenings related to the game. First up is a halftime show so bad and disjointed, Pete Rozelle said he never wanted to see Up With People again. He got his wish and Up With People never did another halftime show after 1986. Iona College Radio Hour with Willie O'Ree and Chelsea Cabarcas
The game is known for Bills placekicker Scott Norwood's last-second missed field goal attempt that went wide right of the uprights, starting a four-game losing streak in the Super Bowl for the Bills. The game became the only Super Bowl decided by one point and the first Super Bowl in which neither team committed a turnover. The Giants set a Super Bowl record-holding possession of the ball for 40 minutes and 33 seconds. The Giants also overcame a 12–3 second-quarter deficit and made a 75-yard touchdown drive that consumed a Super Bowl-record 9:29 off the clock.[6] Giants running back Ottis Anderson, who carried the ball 21 times for 102 yards and one touchdown, was named Super Bowl MVP. He was the first awardee to receive the newly named "Pete Rozelle Trophy" (named for the former commissioner, Pete Rozelle).[7] Anderson also recorded one reception for seven yards. The NFL in its 100 Greatest Games series ranked it at number 10
Jerry Izenberg earned his first newspaper paycheck in 1951, and he's still writing as columnist emeritus at The Star-Ledger in Newark, New Jersey. “It has been an active life,” he says. Active? Try one of the most amazing careers in sports journalism. We're lucky to hear from Jerry in this second of a two-part episode about his 70 years in the business. Part 1 was all about Muhammad Ali. Jerry told tales from covering more of his fights than anyone. In this second episode, we hear how Jerry became a sports columnist, and how he learned from Red Smith and Jimmy Cannon. He tells us about the first Super Bowl and Pete Rozelle. Hear about Mike Tyson crying on Jerry's chest, and about the magnificent Pele's message to the crowd after his final soccer match. You'll laugh about the pigeons at Jerry's first boxing title match and smile about how a horse from Venezuela captured his heart. And you'll learn about the fortitude of Larry Doby, the baseball Hall of Famer who broke the American League color barrier and later developed a special relationship with Jerry. When Walker signs with the USFL's New Jersey Generals, he leaves more than his college diploma on the table. The Heisman trophy-winner passes up a seat at the table of America's Team, the legendary Dallas Cowboys. “This,” Rozelle tells his colleagues, “is war.”

John Wooten truly is a legend. Coming into the NFL in 1959, he blocked for Jim Brown, played for Paul Brown, and was a key part of the 1964 Cleveland Browns NFL championship team. Hear him share stories of his friendships with Ernie Davis and Muhammad Ali, including great info on the famous "Cleveland Summit" with Ali, Jim Brown, Bill Russell, and many other sports superstars. In college, he helped the Colorado Buffaloes to the Orange Bowl. John worked as a scout for the Dallas Cowboys for 16 years, then worked for the Eagles and Ravens. He now chairs the Fritz Pollard Alliance. He worked with Commissioner Pete Rozelle and other NFL legends to establish an important program to develop African-Americans for coaching and front office positions. John's amazing story -- which includes working with Pete Rozelle to avoid filing a discrimination lawsuit against the NFL in the 1960s and Clemson mailing a threatening letter to Colorado before the 1957 Orange Bowl because he and a teammate were African-American -- is told in this episode.
