My guest Jessica Frew is a delightful person to listen to talk about her incredible story and about what happens when life throws you a major curve ball. Jessica married Steven and two years into their marriage he came out to her as gay.  They stayed married and had a daughter but eventually the marriage dissolved but their friendship and connection remain strong.  They both are remarried and she says their daughter has more people to love her. Listen to the episode to hear the truly remarkable story of living with intention, doing what is best for their daughter and how love overcomes so much. Jessica also talks about how we are often the first person we are taught not to trust, how our intuition often gets pushed down and we lose the ability to hear and trust it. I love her message of "unshoulding" on yourself and your life.  We often have a vision of what life should look like, and when it doesn't look like that we think something is wrong and we live in disappointment and even shame and guilt. This episode will delight, encourage and instruct you in powerful ways to live and thrive when life doesn't look like you thought it should.

Jessica Frew helps women be bold and take control of their divorce process. She's the founder of TheBoldLogic.com, and author of It's Not You…It's Me, A Guide to Taking Yourself Out of Other People's Drama. And she's the co-host of the Husband in Law podcast, with her ex-husband and her husband! Two years into her marriage, her husband came out to her as gay. They stayed married for another five years, when he had an affair. Together, they made the intentional decision to NOT have a typical, contentious divorce and co-parenting situation (their daughter was two at the time). Today, she's been remarried for 10 years and her ex is in a two-year relationship—and they remain the best of friends. Jessica proved that it's possible to keep your power and not let other people's decisions ruin your life. She teaches women to live boldly, and that it's only when we understand, love, respect, and accept ourselves that we can show up authentically in our relationships. Podcast co-host and betrayal coach, Jessica Frew, met her love in college, and they were married within a few months. Everything was easy breezy until two years into their wedded bliss, her husband came out as gay. They attempted valiantly to uphold their vows in a mixed orientation relationship, but it all came to a crescendo when Jessica learned her that her then husband had finally given in and had an affair with a man. This set them both off on a course they never thought they would travel, however, they set forth with intention and have created a loving (if unconventional!) family unit for their daughter, a podcast to talk about the ups and downs (with Jessica's current husband!) and a coaching program to help support women as they navigate the pain of betrayal in their lives. In this episode, Jess x 3 sit down for a conversation on how betraying ourselves and not upholding our own boundaries can lead to betrayal of others. Jessica's insights, while specific to her story, apply to anyone in relationship, to themselves, and each other. Meet Jessica!Jessica Frew is a wife, ex-wife, mom, stepmom, and BOLD action taker. What is it really like to live life unapologetically?  Fear has a way of making us say and do things we would never have done. And while all fear is attempting to do is keep us safe…it limits our potential. The key is to be simply okay with breaking the norms set by the society you're living in.  In today's episode with Jessica Frew, you'll learn what it takes to lean into fear so that you can become unapologetically you.  Here are the keynotes from today's episode: Managing trolls and negative internet comments about you and your loved ones Why you shouldn't underestimate the value of a great support system or community Why being bold is so important and how it can help you feel more self-aware How boundaries will affect you as a real person and why establishing them is so important Embracing and taking ownership of who you are in order to become your best self   About Our Guest Jessica Frew is a mom, wife, ex-wife, stepmom, and BOLD action taker. Summary:My guest, Jessica Frew, hosts the “Husband in Law” podcast with her husband and her ex-husband. Today she's sharing with me how she maintained a healthy and communicative relationship with her ex—even through when her ex came out as gay and had an affair, the divorce, a re-marriage, step-parenting, co-parenting, and being in business together.Show notes:Jessica Frew is a wife, ex-wife, mom, stepmom, and BOLD action taker. She has a successful podcast called “Husband in Law” that she records with her husband, Matt, and her ex-husband, Steve. Together they are sharing their stories of love, marriage, coming out, divorce, remarriage, and co-parenting to help others know they are not alone. Her first husband, Steve, was married to Jessica for a year before he came to terms with the fact that he was gay. He wasn't ready to embrace that or leave the marriage at that point, so they stayed married for another 6 years until he had an affair and they tried to work through it but it was a mess so they ended up divorcing. They had a 2-year-old daughter at the time of divorce. They didn't want to have the typical resentment and issues that they had seen often in divorced couples so they took the time to figure out what they wanted their relationship and coparenting structure to look like for them. They hang out more than most ex couples and have a fairly unconventional co-parenting system. They spend all holidays together, work together, etc. Jessica married her second husband, Matt, 8 years ago and Steve actually now works for Matt. She has step kids through her second marriage. Lessons learned:When your partner shares something so vulnerable with you, take time to understand what it means to you. When your partner is already carrying personal shame with them, you don't need to add to that in a negative way; they are likely already hard on themselves internally. Help them remember everything that's good about them. Don't judge them or create more shame; be there to love and support them. You can handle a lot more than you think you can and you can do hard things. Just because your reality changes doesn't mean that you can't be happy. Give yourself grace, give your spouse grace. If you do react poorly or accusatory or say hurtful things to them, come back and apologize and own your part.Nothing about going through a divorce is easy. But if you take the time to create an amicable and communicative relationship with your to-be ex and get over your ego, it can be a lot less hard. Learn now how to effectively communicate. Use your words nicely. Take the time to consider your response and how you communicate with your ex. Take the time to sit down and identify your own fears, deal breakers, priorities. Figure out what you need to do that is in your control. Heal yourself. Allow your ex to heal themselves.Create boundaries. Boundaries are important in every relationship, including within yourself. Put your kids before your ego. Make the first priority and common ground with your ex be that you want what's best for your children. Most the time, your ex or the new step parent isn't trying to take your place.Love comes in all shapes and sizes. Let go of what you think life should look like. See how you can invite love in instead of contention.

Life can be complex, with so many different influences on how we see ourselves.  Our identity is wrapped up in so many things that we can easily lose sight of who we really are. Jessica is a shining example of understanding yourself.  She carries many labels.  Those labels could easily cause her to act in a way that is expected by others. Yet, it doesn't change who she is.  She wears her labels with pride and still is able to maintain grace and acceptance of others.  Her compassion emanates from her, and her ability to be who she is with confidence gives her the greatest opportunity to leave a positive impact on this world.   ///   Today we are with Jessica Frew, co-host of the "Husband in Law" Podcast.  A podcast for those who are open-minded enough to let go of the religious and social norms they have been taught we should all fit into.                 Steve, Jessica, and Matt walk through the science of making a relationship successful.  Steve and Jessica were happily married for seven years until Steve came out as being gay, which inevitably ended in divorce. Now, Matt and Jessica have been happily married for six years.                 Matt, Jessica, and Steve have a relationship that, by most standards, would be considered atypical.                 Sharing stories of love, marriage, children, divorce, the struggles of religious norms, homosexuality, and trying to be our best selves, this podcast holds nothing back and shares what most people are scared to talk about.                 Jessica is really passionate about Living a BOLD life and how it not only impacts us personally but also in the way we show up in our relationships. /// Topics we discuss:   - Planning out difficult conversations Exploring the emotions Holding more than one emotions Taking space and time - Living a bold life Doing what feels right to you Showing up as yourself - Setting personal boundaries   References:   Husband in Law Podcast Brene Brown Church of Jesus Christ Identity Covering   Credits:   Music: Main Theme: "Eaze Does It" by Shye Eaze and DJ Rufbeats, a More In Common Podcast Exclusive. Jessica Frew is a mom, wife, ex-wife, step-mom, lover of all things active, and an entrepreneur.Jessica's Bio: My first husband (Steve) and I were active members of the LDS/Mormon and just a few months into our marriage when my husband came to terms with the fact he is gay. We stayed married for another 6 years while he worked through understanding and accepting this part of himself. We had an amazing marriage at that time. It was hard but we loved and supported each other and at the same time, we came to love ourselves in a whole new way. We also brought an amazing little girl into our lives. We did eventually divorce but we have stayed best of friends through it all. Today I am remarried to another amazing man (Matt), I have 2 step kids, still active in my church, and my ex and I are still best of friends. Not only that, my husband and ex-husband are now great friends as well. We understand and relate to all things co-parenting because while we have an exceptional relationship with Steve, Matt's ex is very high conflict. My ex-husband, my husband, and myself host a podcast together called Husband in Law. We are sharing our stories of love, marriage, coming out, infidelity, divorce, and co-parenting. We are doing this to help individuals view themselves and others in a new light so that they can see not only their own self-worth but also the worth of others. We are changing how people view themselves and others to create stronger relationships. One of the more difficult areas of growth in a stepfamily involves getting to a place where you become able to separate the hurt from the person who hurt you. In other words? When emotions are high, and perceptions of betrayal, anger, sadness, grief, and loss are present, it can be really hard to see the human being underneath the pain you feel. But the human is there. And seeing the human for the human is such a powerful and liberating place to work from. This is one of the best interviews we’ve ever had on the show, for so many reasons that align with the vision and mission of Stepqueen. In this incredible episode with special guest Jessica Frew, we discuss: Her lived experience as a divorced biological mother & remarried stepmom, with one “easy” coparenting dynamic, and one “extremely high conflict” coparenting dynamic. The journey of marrying a man who later came out as gay The experience of living through infidelity “even though” her husband was gay Why we grieve the end of a relationship, even when we know it is the best (and only) decision How Jessica and her second husband have created a powerful relationship with Jessica’s ex-husband, and have become an inspiration for blended families everywhere! The secret to coparenting with someone who is extremely high-conflict And so, so much more! Our topic for the past few episodes has been Loving Boldly-- (E42 Loving Boldly with Jessica Frew, E43 Double Down: Give yourself some credit) The takeaway for the MIND was to Open your mind to the possibility of seeing ways to love in a new light. This week, in a normal, everyday conversation with her mom, Michelle was able to draw from the things we talked about with opening our minds to see the situation in a new light. Remembering the concept "if you can't find compassion toward someone else, you are just messing around with the ego"-- she realized she could open her mind to compassion, and subsequently open her heart to a loving experience. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/michelle48/message

Three days before Jessica Frew married Steve, he confided in her about his pornography addiction. Jessica prayed and fasted and felt peace and guidance that she should marry Steve. Even though she was sure of the answer she had received, Jessica still had trials and challenges. Eventually, Steve confided in her that he was gay and their marriage ended after infidelity. In this interview, Jessica shares how she trusted in the answers she had already received from God and moved forward boldly with love for God, Steve, their daughter and now in her new marriage with her husband, Matt. Jessica’s journey illustrates so well that although we may not always know how our journey will turn out, we can embrace the answer we receive and feel love and peace. Journal Questions Jessica shared how she felt peace about marrying Steve and she clung to that guidance she had felt previously as she dealt with challenges of Steve’s pornography addiction, infidelity and coming out as gay. She said, “That really took me through a lot of our marriage of knowing that I was in the right place. I was doing the right thing, no matter what happened in my marriage, I was put here for a reason.” When have you felt totally certain that God was guiding you? Record the experiences that come to your mind so you’ll have a place to come back to as a reminder of what you already know. Things may not work out exactly how you think they should, but as Jessica shared, you can trust God and rely on the guidance He has given you.   Jessica said when she was in the middle of divorcing Steve she asked herself, “What is my fear right now? What is my fear that I’m feeling? And how can I change the story around it and, and have more faith?” What are you feeling fear about in your life? How can you change your own journey and move from fear to faith?   Jessica’s main message is to be bold about following the promptings you feel. She said one of the thoughts she has had recently is this, “God, isn’t looking for perfect people to do his work because none of us are. He’s looking for people who are willing to take action when he needs it.” What is God asking you to take action on in your life?  How can you be bold and act on what He is prompting you to do?
