Life in the Peloton

Life in the Peloton is proudly brought to you by MAAP In this week's episode of Life in the Peloton, I'm learning more about one of the most important parts of life; sleep. When I retired from the professional peloton a few years ago, we were already wearing sleep tracking devices and starting to tap into how we can improve our sleep and, therefore, our performance. Since then, professional cyclists have stepped it up another notch and are hunting out those 1% gains to help improve the quality & quantity of their sleep. I spoke to Dr. Ian Dunican - an expert on the topic - to find out more about how important sleep is, what we can do to get better quality sleep, and what happens to us if we neglect it. Dr Ian's a keen ultra distance swimmer and practices jiu jitsu, so he understands the importance of recovery and sleep better than most. We spoke about the increased societal awareness of sleep, and how humans today are so much busier than they were a few decades ago - stretching themselves even more thinly and putting even more onus on getting good quality shut eye to keep ourselves healthy. Sleep science is a relatively new discipline, and Dr Ian talked to me about the different phases and cycles of sleep, various sleep disorders that a huge percentage of the population struggle with, and seemingly minor environmental factors that can have a massive bearing on how well we're sleeping. I also wanted to know about sleep and pro cycling. Sometimes you're so tired from a stage race that no matter how long you sleep for you never feel truly wide awake. Dr Ian gave me some great tips about optimizing sleep around competition, and debunked a lot of popular myths around wearable devices and biohacking - which I found super eye opening. Next, I spoke to my old team mate; Lawson Craddock. Lawdog currently rides for Jayco AlUla and is one of the first riders I remember seeing pick up a wearable sleep tracking device and look more closely at his own sleep and what changes he could make to improve it. We spoke about how much things have changed in the pelo' in just a few years, and how things Lawson was doing earlier in his career have become the new normal amongst other pro riders. I was blown away by how much there is to learn about sleep, and what a massive difference it can make. I've always been someone who thinks they can get away with 5-6 hours sleep a night and still function pretty well throughout the day, but, after chatting to Dr Ian and Lawdog, I need to rethink my sleep schedule. Cheers! Mitch This episode is supported by our friends at Pillar Performance. The Life in the Peloton book is OUT NOW! Get your copy now exclusively at maap.cc! Can't wait for you to read it.

Lawson Craddock grew up in the flatland of Houston but fought his way onto the WorldTour feeder team Trek-Livestrong when he was still a teenager. After turning pro three years later, he raced for Giant-Shimano, Cannondale, and his current team, Jayco–AlUla. In his 10 years in the WorldTour, he's taken podiums at the Vuelta, won the Time Trial National Championships in back-to-back years, and had a standout performance at the 2018 Tour de France, but not for the usual reasons.Lawson caught up with Payson in Spain last week to reminisce about racing together in Texas as teenagers and his subsequent move to Europe and into the WorldTour. He talks about how getting pulled from the Vuelta in his first year in the pro peloton gave him extra fuel for a triumphant return the next year, and how a relentless training plan mandated by his team nearly derailed his momentum. He also details his viral performance at the 2018 Tour de France. After fracturing his scapula in the first stage, he went on the complete every remaining stage and raise $380k for his hometown velodrome in Houston which was damaged by Hurricane Harvey. Now in his early 30s and raising a young family, Lawson talks about whether he plans to move back home to Texas and whether he finally intends to fulfill his childhood dream of joining the family roofing business.Instagram: @theadventurestacheYouTube: Payson McElveen

The Giro d'Italia kicked off this year with three stages in Hungary, followed by a big travel day down to Sicily for a stout mountain stage up Mount Etna. How does all this travel affect the racing? Riders often say different things, depending on who they are speaking to — or whether it's on the record. This year, fitness wearable company Whoop is providing rider data from the race, including heart rate data during the stages and sleep data after them. Hugh Carthy (EF Education-EastPost), for instance, only got 5.5 hours of sleep on the big transfer day from Hungary to Sicily, according to Whoop. U.S. national time trial champion Lawson Craddock is racing the Giro in support of Simon Yates, who won the time trial in Budapest. Andrew Hood spoke with Craddock about racing in Hungary for an Italian stage race, as well as his thoughts on the long road ahead at the Giro. Host Ben Delaney chats with Hood from the press room on Mount Etna.

In this episode Richard Moore, Lionel Birnie and Daniel Friebe discuss the final unveiling of the 2022 Giro d'Italia route. The Giro stages have been revealed bit by bit this time in batches, rather than chronologically. Has this robbed the Giro route of some of its mystery and majesty or does it not really matter? And what are the other terrible innovations in recent grand tour history? It's track season, cyclo-cross season and silly season. We discuss the controversy of riders taking part in events on their new team's bikes before their contracts have expired in the light of EF Education First's threat to terminate Sergio Higuita and Lawson Craddock's contracts for doing just that. We ask whether Adam Yates's Barcelona marathon time was impressive for a professional cyclist.  Richard's show and tell segment discusses a new show on GCN featuring EF Education First sports director Tom Southam teaching a bunch of fourth-category riders how to ride as a team, and we hear from Southam himself. And in the final part we speak to Tony Hoffa, a Friend of the Podcast who has recently secured a job in the World Tour with Team DSM as a mechanic – a move which came about after he listened to our Friends of the Podcast special episode A Team Apart. Since this podcast, I’ve been amazed at how many awesome guests we’ve had who are right at the top of their profession. Today’s guest continues that trend as I chat with Jim Miller, Chief of Performance at USA Cycling. Jim raced as a pro cyclist on US domestic teams in the 90’s alongside a previous guest, Dirk Friel from TrainingPeaks. While racing he started out coaching in a small way, and on retiring he built his own coaching business before being enticed across to USA cycling where he spent the next 17 years. Jim enjoyed a short spell working with Dirk at TrainingPeaks before returning to USA cycling in March 2020 to take up his current position and help prepare athletes for the 2021 Olympics in Japan.  This is another fascinating and enjoyable conversation as we chat about: Why even in a management role, Jim always negotiates freedom to continue with some coaching Remarkable differences between how USA cycling is funded compared to other nations like UK or France Measuring HRV and why Jim is a big fan of the Whoop band Virtual racing, ’no compromises’, and why it’s important to stay focussed on the long term goal Topsy turvy results in pro cycling and why so many young riders are winning FTP is important, but why you should understand the ‘real’ requirements for your chosen event Polarised training, Stephen Seiler, and why Jim is a big fan of both Jim’s top 3 tips for your winter training Jim is a really interesting and knowledgeable guy, and I would highly recommend you follow him on social media.  You can find him here Instagram jimmillertime  Twitter @jimmiller_time  If you’re interested in finding out more about USA Cycling go HERE   Other links you might be interested in Previous podcasts with Stephen Seiler talking about Polarised Training Part 1 Part 2 - Q & A   In terms of remote coaching and monitoring athletes, Jim is a obviously a big fan of TrainingPeaks and TrainingPeaks-WKO5   Jim is a big fan of the Whoop band as am I. Hello and welcome to Fast Talk, your source for the science of cycling performance! I'm your host Chris Case.    I’ll set the stage for today’s episode with an analogy. And apologies to those of you who don’t enjoy our car engine analogies; alas, we’re sticking with it on this episode. We ask the simple question: Which has the greatest chance of consistently producing the best performances: a powerful, finely-tuned, race-inspired engine—take your pick from Ferrari, Porsche, BMW, and especially if you’re an F1 fan, Mercedes—or a heavily modified Honda Civic that you hope can compete at that goal race you’ve been preparing for?   Bringing it back to cycling terms, is it more beneficial to build a robust, complete physiological engine and then apply it to, or activate it for, different race situations, or is it better to work on specific attributes of your engine given the specific demands of a particular race? The answer, it turns out, has as much to do with training philosophy as it does to physiological principles. In today’s episode, we analyze which is more appropriate for you, and which leads to the best performances, and the best athletes. It’ll likely become pretty clear where Coach Connor and our main guest, Jim Miller, stand on the matter.    Jim, as Chief of Sports Performance, leads USA Cycling’s Athlete Development programs. In his previous role with USA Cycling, after a two-year hiatus took him to TrainingPeaks, Miller helped the United States earn 14 Olympic medals and numerous world championship titles since 2001. The list of athletes Jim has coached over the years is too long to read here, but notably includes Tejay van Garderen, Kate Courtney, Kristin Armstrong, and Lawson Craddock, to name a few.  His coaching experience isn’t solely focused on the elite of the elite, however. Jim also works with athletes whose backgrounds or goals are unique, and they’re often from the amateur or master’s ranks. Not surprisingly, Jim has found the most success with the amateurs he coaches by applying the same principles he does to world champions. We’ll hear about those successes today. We’ll also take a compelling tangent into the importance of psychology and mental capacity to success.  On today’s episode, we’ll also hear from American pro Kiel Reijnen, data analyst and coach Tim Cusick, and WorldTour physiologist Inigo San Millan. All that and much more, today on Fast Talk.  Let's make you fast!  Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

There is a thread that connects no fewer than eleven riders spread across eight teams at this year's Vuelta a España. George Bennett, Neilson Powless, Tao Geoghegan Hart, Nathan Van Hooydonck, Will Barta, Sam Bewley, Lawson Craddock, Logan Owen, Clément Chevrier, Ruben Guerreiro and Ben King all rode for the American development team that's run by Axel Merckx - who, as well as being a former rider, is the son of the cyclist who most agree is the greatest of all time, Eddy. The team started in 2009 and has been variously known as Trek-Livestrong, Bontrager, Bissell, Axeon and Axeon Hagens Berman. Throughout its eleven seasons, the team has kept its focus on developing talent under the watchful eye of the son of Eddy. In this episode we hear from Axel merckx and from some of his alumni: Powless, Hart, Van Hooydonck, Barta, Craddock, Owen and King, who was the first rider ever signed to the team. How EF Education First selected their Tour de France team

Exclusive and behind the scenes access with American WorldTour team In the latest episode of the Cyclingnews podcast - brought to you in association with Sportful, Pinarello and Floyds of Leadville - we go behind the scenes with EF-Education First Pro Cycling team at their training camp in Girona, Spain, as they finalise their Tour de France roster. With exclusive access to the riders, including Rigoberto Uran, Michael Woods and Tejay van Garderen, we follow the team as they're put through there paces during two flat-out team time trial efforts.  The three-day camp took place last week and formed the backdrop for the team's final selection process for the Tour de France.  Present at the camp were Woods, van Garderen, Uran, Tanel Kangert, Mitch Docker, Lawson Craddock, Tom Scully, Sebastian Langevald, and Simon Clarke. Alberto Bettiol who was in the mix for a Tour de France spot was racing the Italian nationals at the time. Team director Charly Wegelius takes Cyclingnews through the process of team selection on the final morning of the camp and explains his goals and what he's looking for from the riders as they set out on their final test. He must narrow down a list of 10 to eight by the end of the day and over a 13-minute long time trial test - which the team ride twice - he watches on from the team car. Cyclingnews had the chance to follow in the second team car with the opportunity to listen and observe as Wegelius offers instructions over the radio before the team then begin their internal de-brief that provided a fascinating insight into team tactics and the morale within the squad. Wegelius then brings everyone together. He praises Woods and Kangert on taking shorter pulls on the front in order to keep the pace high, and he tells Scully that his skill in moving off the front of the line is so smooth that it's like watching an experienced pursuit rider in action.  Back at the team hotel, and under the baking sun, we sit down with Uran for a short interview.  It's rare moment to talk to the 2017 Tour de France runner-up about the camp and his season to date. We then look for a place to interview van Garderen. There are a set of benches in the shade a few meters away from the team buses but they are currently occupied with Wegelius and another director Andreas Klier, who are both deep in conversation with road captain Simon Clarke. It's obvious that a decision on the team is about to be made. Van Garderen  - no stranger to successful team time trial squads - takes us through how EF Education First communicates during TTT efforts. We also talk to the American about how much effort goes into the off-the-bike preparation at camps of this nature, and of course his aspirations at the Tour after his fine second place in June's Criterium du Dauphine. By the time van Garderen has left, Klier and Wegelius have done the same. They've retreated back inside the hotel for a final conference before going door-to-door at the hotel and breaking the news to the nine riders at the camp as to whether they have made the selection. For most, it's good news but for Craddock and Docker this is as far as it goes. Although  Bettiol has missed the camp due to the Italian nationals he will make the Tour team. After spending time with the riders we sit down with Wegelius. We ask him about how the team has gelled as a unit over the last three days and also how important the team time trial is in the balance of selecting their entire Tour de France Tour team. Wegelius' task is unenviable but he's selected a squad for the Tour de France that can fight on a number of fronts and even the riders who have unfortunately missed out have played their part in spurring on the eight who have been selected. Uran will challenge for the podium, Mike Woods will support and target stage wins and Van Garderen appears revitalised since his move to the team. Bettiol will have chances, and there's experience and horsepower with Langeveld, Scully, Clarke and Kangert running the engine of the team.  With the camp now over the team disperses. Some riders like van Garderen remain in Girona for extra training, while others like Uran head back to their European base in Monaco. Within a couple of hours everyone has checked out, the trucks are loaded up and the team has moved on. The next stop is Brussels and the Tour de France. However, there's one final chance to talk to Michael Woods. He's loaded up his car and is ready to head home but he agrees to sit down with us to talk about the camp and of course what will be his Tour de France debut. Overall, this was a successful camp for EF-Education First. There were some tough moments in terms of the selection process but the riders selected are of the highest caliber and they head to the Grand Depart with realistic goals. This podcast offers a rare glimpse into the minds of the riders and staff of a WorldTour squad on eve of a Grand Tour, and provides a more relaxed environment in which the athletes can talk about their training, the cohesion within the squad and their hopes for the Tour de France. With the team finally announced publicly on Tuesday, now all they have to do is deliver. If you watched this year’s Tour de France, then undoubtedly you saw a whole lot of Lawson Craddock. He hung out at the back of the peloton for the entire first half of the race as he was reeling from a broken scapula suffered on stage one. If you know anything about me, you may remember I did the same thing on stage one of my first Tour de France. How he soldiered through July and what Lawson did afterwards to bring positivity to cycling and especially his local Texan community as outstanding.

Lawson Craddock was preparing and hoping that first of all he would get selected for this years Tour De France, and then secondly if he did get selected that he would be fit enough to do his job in the team and then ultimately arrive to Paris. But that all changed after the stage 1 when he crashed and fractured the spine of his scapula. From then on the Tour was turned on it’s head for him as he literally battled through every kilometre of each stage right to the finish in Paris. I watched him battle through on TV and now it was great to hear from him about his 2018 Tour De France.
