“While there are many beloved mutant vehicles out there, El Pulpo, in both of its incarnations, is the most beloved.” ~Chef Juke, Communications lead for the Department of Mutant VehiclesEl Pulpo is a 28-foot tall giant octopus, a demented windup toy, a mobile kinetic sculpture with articulating legs, eyes and mouths. It spews fire from its extremities and it has been stealing the limelight for a decade now, first at Black Rock City, then everywhere from LoveBurn to EDC to fire festivals and engineering events. It's merely the newest and largest expression of artist Duane Flatmo and his team of kinetic engineer artists. Many years ago, he gave up music to pursue art, which he has pursued from New York to London to China. He's a hardworking, paperwork-doing, idea person. Duane shares how his influences inspired his innovations and got him to perform on The Tonight Show, open for Carlos Santana, and compete in Junkyard Wars and the Kinetic Sculpture Race. Lost Coast Brewery's master brewer Jack Van Stone is our guest on Brew Ha Ha with Steve Jaxon and Mark Carpenter. Herlinda Heras is also in the studio today and Harry Duke is sitting in for Steve Jaxon. Lost Coast Brewery is located on the northern California coast, in a remote section that is directly served by neither Highway 1 nor Highway 101. The CBC Craft Brewers Conference is this week in Denver, also the World Beer Cup is there. Herlinda will miss this event for the first time in years. Tara Nurin is there promoting her new book and she will report on the winner of the World Beer Cup and more, including local winners for us, in an upcoming episode. Jack Van Stone has been a friend of Herlinda Heras for fifteen years. The Lost Coast brewery owner is in Tara Nurin's book on the history of women and beer. On their website, Lost Coast Brewery claims to “not just another craft brewery” which comes from its unique status. The founders were two women who quit their professional jobs, went to Europe to learn brewing, and then came back to found Lost Coast Brewery in Eureka, California. Jack Van Stone tells the story of how they moved to larger spaces as they grew. For the last seven years they have been operating a gorgeous modern brewery in Eureka. The artist who drew their artwork knew the founders because he would sit and drink beer and draw pictures. They liked his drawings and so they hired him to do their labels. He also has drawn murals all over Eureka. They already had some Tangerine Wheat beer and now some Downtown Brown Ale. They actually use tangerine extract, added only after the wheat beer is done. It is now their flagship beer. It was seasonal at first. Jack Van Stone mentions several breweries on a sort of Humboldt County beer trail, which, apart from Lost Coast Brewery, includes Eel River Brewing, Mad River Brewing, Six Rivers Brewery, Redwood Curtain Brewing Company and also Humboldt Cider Company. Jack tells about what a nice place Humboldt County is to visit, and how you should stay at least one night to get the whole experience of such a remote place. Then he describes one more beer, an Imperial Stout aged in French oak barrels. It tastes like a stout but has some of the walnut character from the wood.

Lost Coast Brewery & Oysterpalooza

Brew Ha Ha Podcast

Lost Coast Brewery and Oysterpalooza are both featured on Brew Ha Ha today. Brandon from Rocker Oysterfeller's is here to promote Oysterpalooza and Jack Van Stone from Lost Coast Brewery has brought several of their beers. Lost Coast Brewery Lost Coast Brewery is located in downtown Eureka, California, on the northern California coast before you reach Oregon. The brewery started in 1989 so this is their 30th anniversary. People call the area the Lost Coast since it is not served by the 1 or the 101. The 1 joins the 101 at Leggett, 80 miles south of Eureka, leaving about 85 miles of the coast not served by a major highway. That makes it hard to reach but has kept it uncrowded.  It is also pristine and gorgeous. Lost Coast Brewery's owners Barbara Groom and Wendy Pound were a Pharmacist and Family Therapist, respectively. They travelled northern Europe and learned brewing, then built this great enormous brewery. They also make cider now. Mark has known Lost Coast as one of the early independent craft brewers, since they started in 1989. Lost Coast Brewery makes a beer called Great White, which is their number one product. It’s very crisp, clean and drinkable, says Mark.Today, Lost Coast has added some IPAs to their production, because of their popularity. Mark knows a lot of the old brewers because a lot of them came by Anchor to visit Mark and see what they were doing there, back when there were only a few other brewers around. They taste a beer called Peanut Butter Chocolate Milk Stout. Herlinda says it’s not super sweet, Mark says because the sugars get fermented away. Steve finds it delicious but can only have a few sips. It’s genius but “not something I want to pound down,” says Mark. They did beer flavored like cupcakes, brownies and someone wants to do cheesecake. Steve asks, what’s the point? It’s definitely more of a niche. Herlinda remembers that “Belching Beaver Peanut Butter Milk Stout” was one of the original beers off this type. Jack says that the Summer is a great time to visit Eureka, the weather and the coast are spectacular. Lost Coast is available at Bottle Barn. Rocker Oysterfeller’s and Oysterpalooza Rocker Oysterfeller’s is located at 14415 Hwy One, Valley Ford, CA. They are putting on the annual Oysterpalooza, a music and food festival on Memorial Day weekend, in a few days. There will be music from The Texas II (who sound like Willie Nelson or Hank Williams), Black Sheep Brass Band and Arann Harris coming out of retirement just for Oysterpalooza. They also have a band called Van Goat that plays Swing Punk. It’s very energetic swing music with a lot of horns. Oysters of course are the primary focus. Herlinda describes it as being “...like an old fashioned fair, you can sit on hay bales, there is great music, there is space to roam around and meet people, the food is great and the scenery is beautiful." Speaking of big concert festivals, Bottlerock is also this weekend, in Napa. In addition to Rocker Oysterfeller's, they also have a Mexican restaurant called Tortilla Flats, named after the John Steinbeck book. They will make all the carnitas and salsa. They’ll also be doing deep fried oysters, which can be done in sandwiches or lettuce wraps. They taste an Oyster Stout, an old style. Mark explains that in England, before they really knew about the chemistry of beer, they tried putting oysters in the beer, which probably added nutrition for the yeast and would affect the taste too. Henhouse still makes an oyster stout. They had a beer called Indica Pale Ale before the TTB so the name is grandfathered in. Rocker Oysterfeller's has been open for 13 years. It is an antique hotel and the rooms are comfortable and homey. The restaurant is southern influenced and since they are in Valley Ford they are surrounded by oyster farms and dairy farms, so they use the local production on their menu.

Season 2, Episode 6 - We’re starting early for this show, eleven in the morning to be exact, and were taking it easy and ramping up to the bourbon barrel-aged blind tasting with session beers from around the world. It’s all about pacing yourself and easing in. That’s what we’re doing this week. Our blind tasting, bourbon barrel-aged stout series is happening next week, so we decided to do a little beer tour and sample some session-able beers from around the world. We had a really early start for this recording session, so it seemed appropriate.  First up is a classic English bitter from Fuller's called London Pride. This beer is a really great starter due to it’s caramel, malty flavor that’s balanced with just the right amount of bitterness. It isn’t too harsh, and really wakes up the palate. Next up is a beer on the other side of the spectrum, Lost Coast Brewery’s Sharkinator white IPA. Described simply as a dry hopped version of Lost Coast’s Great White witbier, the hop aroma of this beer is very much in-your-face, and has a nice, burst of citrus flavor with a malty, wheat finish. We get into a discussion about dry hopping techniques, as well as the effect a bottle label can have on a consumer looking for new beers. Session-able Beers The bottle label discussion brings us to a beer from Green Flash Brewing Co. called Mosaic Session IPA. Green Flash, like many other breweries, jumped on the session IPA bandwagon with this beer, and while the beer has a nice hoppy aroma, the mouthfeel and flavor leave you wanting something more. Session IPAs in general seem to suffer from this as a whole. This is definitely an evolving style that will either find it’s groove, or fall by the wayside like other beer style trends.  The next beer is a great example of why green bottles are so bad for beer. Brasserie Dupont’s Avril is a 3.5% ABV table beer that is normally an outstanding example of a low alcohol, easy drinking, Belgian saison. However, upon pouring this particular bottle of beer, that skunky, stinky smell associated with light struck beers presents itself. Green bottles are just as bad as clear bottles when it comes to blocking ultraviolet light, while brown bottles perform quite well at this task. From a purely aesthetic point of view, this is a very sexy, well designed bottle, but when it comes to beer, the form of the packaging should always follow its function. Consuming this beer fresh is ideal, so be careful when purchasing any beer in a green or clear bottle as it will only accelerate the beer’s deterioration.  We’ll save you the trouble of reading about the next beer. Fürst Wallerstein’s Zwickel is normally a pretty tasty brew, but this bottle has seen better days, and the beer inside simply just fell apart. We found out on the show that this style of beer doesn’t travel very well, and has poor shelf life. It was a bummer for sure, but it happens. Finally, we end the show on a high note with a favorite of Jason’s, Köstritzer Schwarzbier. This 4.8% ABV black lager is delicious. It was a “craft conversion” beer for Jason, and rightly so. Described by Matt as a “helles with cocoa”, the beer is super-dry, and the style can range from 14-28 IBU. It’s very accessible, so pick up some cans if you see it. 00:00:00 - Joe Batwinis, from our sister show Technically Speaking, joins us to discuss whether or not we should drop the S (for science) from STEM education as the hard work to earn the degree doesn't seem to be paying off for most graduates. 00:16:42 - Regardless of their major, many college students enjoy a drink. We're not in college anymore, but we do our best. Joe enjoys a Raspberry Brown from the Lost Coast Brewery but Patrick thinks his Rogue made Mocha Porter is superior. Ryan avoids the fray with a cocktail called the "Gentle Giraffe" invented by former guest of the show Willow Belden. To make one for yourself and a friend, simply combine in a shaker: 2 shots of good aged rum 1 shot Maraschino liqueur 6 ozpineapple juice 00:22:40 - You should never drink and drive. You can, however, drink and discuss movies about driving such as Rush which this week gets the Trailer Trash Talk treatment! 00:33:21 - Photographing lions is both risky and difficult. Two intrepid photographers build some robots to help them out, which makes both the tech and bio nerds quite happy. 00:46:05 - PaleoPOWs are a lot like modifying cameras, they're both likely to void your waranty. Joe begins with a voicemail from Danielle N. who wants to know, based on previous discussions of robotic cars, if removing humans from the equation will eliminate traffic jams. Ryan receives a delightful donation (Thanks!) from Michael M. along with an e-mail about 3D modelling of the complicated skulls of animals like crocodiles and fish for the purposes of research. Patrick suggests winning an award, and Ryan suggests following some relevant folks on Twitter. Patrick finishes the show with an e-mail from Jaroslav T. who has spotted some bigfoots (or is it bigfeets?) in the wilds of Louisiana, and thought we should know. We agree that this is indeed important information, but are more concerned with how to refer to the beasts in the plural form.
