From Harding's Success to FDR's Political Evolution — David Pietrusza — Herbert Hoover chose affiliation with the Republican Party, finding the Democratic Party either excessively radical or institutionally corrupt. Hoover's persistent inability to establish authentic public connection ultimately undermined his effectiveness during the Great Depression. FDR, by contrast, was politically mature and experienced significant personal transformation after contracting polio in 1921, developing genuine empathy and becoming a disciplined, calculating leader who mastered radio communication with the American people. Learning from Wilson's diplomatic failures, FDR ensured that future international commitments, notably the United Nations, incorporated substantive consultation with Republican leadership and bipartisan support. 1929
When you think of spending and investing, what do you think of? Most of us think of investing as a good and smart thing, and spending, especially excessively, as a bad thing. Right? How about we put this into a new perspective? How about your thoughts, thinking, and emotions? What if we put the old-fashioned “swear jar” on the counter, as a metaphor? With the “swear jar,” each time you said a bad word you have to put a dollar into it. And, of course, this means there is a cost to using bad words. Actually, there is a loss of that dollar from your pocket. Now, what about your thoughts? What if all disempowering, fearful, and negative thoughts cost you? And, the reverse, all positive thoughts were an investment in a better quality of life? What if every time you had a negative thought and got into fear you spent your life and when you were positive in your thinking you were investing in your life? In this episode, I talk about a few strategies to interrupt your negative thoughts. These steps are: AwarenessConscious choice to move your attention Where to move your attention and moving it GratitudeAnd, Repetition When you practice what you're going to learn in this episode it can make a huge difference in your life.

Alan Gayle, president of Via Nova Investment Management, is concerned about economic sluggishness and "how the world is going to look and who is going to win" after tariff and rate changes fully play out. Coupled with a stock market where he sees equities as overpriced, that leaves Gayle wanting to be fully diversified, including a full allocation to domestic bonds but also international stocks, where he finds compelling values that he thinks can continue to run. Gayle says that he expects the Federal Reserve to cut rates soon, but "anything the Fed does today takes at least nine months to work," so he thinks it will take that long for the market to get some clarity; as a result, he wants to stay invested and buy any dips while waiting for opportunities to become more apparent. Xander Gray, chief executive at XG Capital Strategies, says that current price levels are high compared to moving averages which suggests that there might be a consolidation or pullback in the offing. Gray — who was last on the show late in 2024, when he called for a market downturn and a recession — says spending and other factors have helped to hold off the recession, though the numbers are showing signs of a weakening that makes the market's current rally hard to trust. Mitchel Penn, managing director of equity research for Oppenheimer & Co., says that business-development companies have moved past concerns about a spike in credit losses and are now "fairly valued" by the market, meaning that their biggest potential gains for the remainder of the year will come from simply capturing dividend payouts. That's not bad, especially because he expects payouts to remain in the high single-digit range, even after likely interest rate cuts that will carry into 2026.
Well, I don't know what kind of psychosis has taken hold of the bureaucrats at Health New Zealand, but you want to see these rules that they've put out about the food and what food is allowed and what food is banned from the hospital cafeterias. It is ridiculously, ridiculously prescriptive. So what they've done is they, they, they put out, because they like wasting their time on nonsense, they've put out their new national food and drink policy. And it's divided food into three categories. You've got the green category, that's the good stuff. You've got the amber category, that's a bit naughty, but OK, and you've got the red category and that's banned. So what you are allowed to eat when you go to the hospital cafeteria is chicken. But without the skin on. So that you're basically left with the saddest, driest chicken breast known to man. Yum, enjoy yourself. Beef and pork, that is allowed, but the staff have to trim the visible fat off, and they have to drain the fatty drippings, which completely ignores the modern research that shows actually meat fat is not that bad for you, and maybe you need it. You are allowed to have a quiche, but it must have no crust. You are allowed a vegetable slice or an egg cup, but they must contain vegetables. A pie is OK, but only if it's smaller than 210 g, and only if it has a potato top. What I've just described to you is basically the green category. That is the only food that they're allowed to display to us. Everything else must not be within your eyesight, cause God only knows what's gonna happen if you clap your eyes on a muffin. The green category must make up 55% of the food at the hospital cafeteria. Amber foods, things you're allowed to eat but not allowed to see, include things like muffins and loaves and slices. They must all be under 120 g, savory pies must be under 210 g, not on display. Nacho chips, white bread, Doughboys, wraps, and pizza bases. They are allowed to have icing on the sweeter things, but they're only allowed to have very little bit of icing, not a lot. Red food, this is food that is recommended to be banned, includes marshmallows in your hot chocolate. Thick icing, chocolate covered food, food containing confectionery, like rocky roads, lolly slices, pebbles, wontons. Oh, that's not actually got lollies in it, but it also includes wontons, money bags, spring rolls, commercially flavored rice, pasta, noodles, and deep fried items. Now, I don't know what, what this tells you about Health New Zealand, but I'm gonna guess that they've either lost the plot or whoever made these rules has decided to run the cafeteria in the spirit of a communist dictatorship, where adults must have every aspect of their lives controlled for them. The fact that we are adults and can decide for ourselves what we should or should not eat is clearly not been factored into this equation. Some of us actually enjoy to have the fat on the meat, very much. Some of us like to eat the skin on our chicken. Hospitals, do I need to remind you are grim. Going to the cafeteria to buy a treat for yourself or perhaps your dying loved 1 may be the only thing that that person has in the day that brings them a little bit of joy. Now, the thing is, Health New Zealand can go ahead with this if they want to. It's their cafeteria after all. Problem with their little dictatorship plan is they only control their tiny little communist state. They do not control. The gigantic capitalist market outside of it. So I don't know about you, but as a an adult who can decide for myself, I suspect I will be bringing in my brioche, dripping in gigantic slabs of icing and just eating it on their premises. Cheyenne joins Ben this week to talk about a word that gets a lot of bad press, but in reality, it is a necessity in most activities involving progress and self-improvement. After conversing about what games they are playing (and discovering Ben's Hogwarts House), they dive right in to deep end and commence with the festivities. Topics explored: the “Epic Fail” meme, Tom Platz, CrossFit acronyms, the invention of Post-It Notes, John Cleese's speeches and educational videos, corporate culture, points of failure in engineering, stories about successes and failures in the academic settings, the roguelike and roguelite labels, and looping game mechanics. Games discussed this week are as follows—Dragon Age: The Veilguard, Infinity Nikki, Hogwarts Legacy, Uncle Chop's Rocket Shop, Papers Please, Plate Up, Baldur's Gate 3, Hades, Kenshi, Deathloop, Disco Elysium, Indigo Prophecy, Super Meat Boy, and Seaman. Daily Halacha Podcast - Daily Halacha By Rabbi Eli J. Mansour
If a person has a medical condition and must use the bathroom often, would he have recite the Beracha of Asher Yatzar (the Beracha recited after performing one's bodily functions) each time he leaves the bathroom? This question arises in situations, for example, where a patient requires a colonoscopy and is given a certain type of drink a day beforehand makes him go the bathroom often in order to clear his system. More commonly, this issue is relevant for anyone taking laxatives who visits the bathroom very frequently during that period. One view, cited in the work Halachot Ketanot, maintains that one recites the Beracha only when his system is completely cleared out. Since the patient knows that he will soon need to use the bathroom again, he should not recite Asher Yatzar until after the completion of the entire process. However, both the Chid"a (Rav Chayim Yosef David Azulai, 1724-1806) and Rav Chayim Palachi (Rabbi of Izmir, Turkey, 19th century) disagree. In their view, so long as a person does not feel the need to use the bathroom right after performing his bodily functions, he recites Asher Yatzar. Even if one knows that he will soon have to return to the bathroom, since at the moment he exited the bathroom he does not feel the need to perform his bodily functions, he recites the Beracha. Halacha indeed follows this position of the Chid"a and Rav Chayim Palachi. Therefore, in the situations described above, one recites Asher Yatzar each time he leaves the bathroom, provided that at that moment he does not feel the need to use the bathroom again. If one leaves the bathroom and immediately feels that he must use it again, then he returns to the bathroom and recites the Beracha afterward, when he no longer feels any need to perform his bodily functions.

Background - Philippians 2:14-15 Do All things without complaining and disrupting that you may become blameless and harmless children of God. Let's just start with an example: Your child is quick to tell you about every time they have an ache or pain. When they are telling you about the ache it is often with such emotion that you wonder how they are even living through it. Then, five minutes later, you hear laughing and playing outside and you look only to see that same child playing with their friends outside with what seems like a pain-free time. “When should I take my child seriously and when should I go tone deaf or even dismissive of their complaints. By the way, some modern day counselors will tell you that you should never dismiss your child's complaints, rather, you should validate their complaints. The proof is out on this one. No, sometimes our kids need to know that irrational complaints need to be shut down sooner rather than later. Remember, it's okay to say “NO” to your kids. Someday they will thank you. First off, our topic today is not just limited to our kids. This idea of how to deal with complainers in a respectful way is common in so many places, work, school, church, etc. We want to tackle this topic today as it primarily relates to the home because this is the first training site to helping our kids recognize and deal more appropriately with their compiants. Chronic complainers that we run into in life are people that have typically practiced this act for a long time and somehow seem to believe they were successful with the strategy. Advice - As we talk about how to deal with the complaints of our children, we want to first lay out a few disclaimers and understandings. You must handle their complaints appropriately for the Season they are in. Remember the seasons. Service 0 - 2ish yrsLeadership 3-13 yrsMentoring 13-18/21 yrsFriend and Counsel 21+ EmancipationIf you have a child in the first season, SERVICE - 0-2 years of age. You never dismiss their cries. In the second season - Leadership, 3-13, this is where the training takes place to help your kids learn the language of how to express what the emotions are behind the complaint. Early in this season, you can help them by teaching them the actual words of the emotion. “Are you feeling angry, sad, tired, etc…. DO NOT GET INTO THE HABIT OF BEING THE RESCUE PARENT - THEY ARE NO LONGER IN SEASON 1. Begin to teach your child how to problem solve by teaching them how to ask better questions. “What can I do about my complaint?”Later in Season 2 about ages 8-13, if you're child leans towards the chronic complainer side, teach them PERSPECTIVE. This is where they can begin to look at life through other people's eyes. It is also an initial learning of EMPATHY for others. What if your child cries “Wolf” a lot? This is where we explain to them that we must CHECK AND VERIFY. http://rocksolidfamilies.orgSupport the show#Rocksolidfamilies, #familytherapy, #marriagecounseling, #parenting, #faithbasedcounseling, #counseling, #Strongdads, #coaching, #lifecoach, #lifecoaching, #marriagecoaching, #marriageandfamily, #control, #security, #respect, #affection, #love, #purpose, #faith,
The irony about a codependent person is that, while they're focusing excessively on someone else, they're actually absorbed in themselves. And one sign that someone is codependent toward you CAN BE that you feel VERY irritated and invaded by a loved one's excessive focus on you. They hover, they get in your business; it feels impossible to have boundaries around them. They say it's just because they love you but Something feels OFF. Sometimes codependency is an urge to fix you – but sometimes it's not about you at all. It's about THEM. And that's the dirty secret of codependency – it can actually be one face of self-centeredness. In this video I respond to a letter from a woman who is learning this the hard way. Georgiana: Today, we will discuss the meaning of the phrase "butter up"... Student: "How interesting, Georgiana! You know I am on a diet, but this morning I had some toast with butter, and let me tell you, it was delicious..." Georgiana: Sorry to interrupt, but the expression "butter up" has nothing to do with food. :) Let me explain it to you. Hey everyone, welcome back to another episode of the podcast. I'm Georgiana, your English teacher, and my mission is to help you speak English fluently. And if you want to help me, share the podcast. That would mean a lot. Thanks. Before you start listening to the episode, make sure to get the transcript on my website: SpeakEnglishPodcast.com It's free! Great! Let's start! Let's take a closer look at the expression "butter up" and how it is commonly used. When someone tries hard to please others to gain their favor or personal benefits in the workplace, it's known as 'buttering up.'" This behavior can be observed in various professional settings such as offices, schools, and even politics, where individuals go to great lengths to please their superiors or influential colleagues. A classic example of 'buttering up' is an employee who frequently praises their boss, hoping to gain favor or secure a promotion. Another example is a student who compliments their teacher, aiming to receive better grades or special privileges. So, how is "buttering up" viewed in Western society? Opinions can differ. On one hand, some people consider it a negative behavior, often associated with insincerity or manipulation. On the other hand, in certain situations like the business world, some people see it as a useful social skill. They believe that being good at giving compliments and networking can help you progress in your career or create new opportunities. Whether "buttering up" is accepted or not depends on the particular workplace culture and what individuals think. Here are some other expressions that are similar to "buttering up": #1 Sucking up to someone: Excessively praising or pleasing someone, especially someone in authority, to gain favor. #2 Kissing up or Kissing someone's boots: Acting overly flattering toward someone in authority. #3 Playing up to someone: Behaving in a way intended to please or show respect to someone. #4 Apple-polishing: Currying favor through flattery or servile behavior. #5 Flattering: Complimenting someone excessively to win their favor or approval. #6 Brown-nosing: Similar to "sucking up," it involves ingratiating oneself to gain favor, often through excessive praise or flattery. #7 Playing the game: Engaging in strategic behavior or actions to gain advantages or achieve success, often involving flattery or pleasing others. #8 Bending over backward: Going to great lengths or making excessive efforts to please or accommodate someone. Now, what are your thoughts? Do you believe "buttering up" can be useful? Are you comfortable engaging in such behavior or receiving it from others? I'm not a big fan of it, but I won't deny that receiving a compliment can feel good from time to time. :) Get the transcript on my website: speakenglishpodcast.com/podcast/
Show Notes: Understanding why your teen is disrespectful will help you stay more detached and supportive. The many ways we disrespect teenagers: School: early start times, expecting every teen to be a perfect generalist, parents and teachers focusing on achievement over character We label and medicate strongminded, independent, powerful kids vs. understand their growing edges and providing outlets for their power. Having an autocratic parenting style: parents are disrespectful when they yell, criticize, spank, micromanage, not give kids choices and decision-making, dissuade teens from their interests and passions, try to mold them into our vision of who they are and their future path Listening: it's disrespectful when listening to our kids to interrupt, go too quickly to fix-it mode, and not respect the context for sharing that is most safe for them. Listen to my podcast from 5-4-23 on 8 mistakes parents make with listening. Tell child's personal stories to parent's friends or relatives Compare them to siblings and blame the oldest child too often Bombard them with 20 questions as she walks in the door after school, not allowing her time to decompress and make sense of her day. Excessively high expectations, not let your child create their own expectations or create their own path. Not understand teenager's separation-individuation stage with its need to build their own identity distinct from ours. Not allow them more privacy and alone time in room Parents can be disrespectful by taking their own anger out on their children Teenager's emotional brain matures faster than their prefrontal cortex, causing them to get angry and overwhelmed and moody; parents become disrespectful when they take their teen's moods personally and react with the same. Not allow them to have their own opinions, not let go of the teacher role as they grow up, and not turn over knowing what's best for them Ask permission before you give advice!

In this short podcast, Bryan covers a common electrical myth about wire length and its relationship with the National Electrical Code. The NEC is concerned with safety—protecting buildings and people—but less so with making sure things work. Wire sizing is a common topic, and length is important because it can contribute to the voltage drop in a circuit. In many cases, we refer to the MCA (minimum circuit ampacity) to select an appropriate wire size. If you run more current through an undersized conductor, it gets hotter and will experience a voltage drop—though not proportionally. It's worth noting that nothing in the circuit is fixed; voltage, amperage, and resistance all follow Ohm's law but are variable as different things start happening in a circuit. In many cases, the NEC generally doesn't require us to size conductors to accommodate for voltage drop. Conductors have some degree of resistance, so longer wires will result in a greater voltage drop than you would see in a shorter wire. It makes sense for the wire to overheat, but that won't happen because the greater resistance in the circuit will reduce the current. There is less work being done. Longer wires and circuits that are sized correctly shouldn't overheat or present a safety issue. The NEC recommends but does not require voltage drop to stay below 5% across a conductor. That is a performance recommendation, not a safety concern. We need equipment to perform correctly, but NEC won't prevent electricians from setting up branch circuits that are longer than the ideal length. Excessively long branch circuits are common in commercial structures, and it's up to HVAC technicians to notice that and measure the voltage drop to make sure it's not negatively affecting the equipment.
