Dennis is joined via Zoom by Vincent Paterson, director, choreographer, dancer, actor and now co-author of a book about his life and career entitled Icons & Instincts: Choreographing and Directing Entertainment's Biggest Stars. Dennis had so many questions for Vincent about working with icons like Michael Jackson, Madonna, Shirley MacLaine and the Mandrell SIsters that the interview lasted for over two hours. So ithis one's going to be a two-parter.   In this episode, Part 1, Vincent talks about what inspired him to write the book, growing up with an alcoholic father in a small town in Pennsylvania and falling in love with dance in his mid 20's. He also discusses the tragic murder of his first lover in Tucson, AZ, the psychic interventions that helped him move out to LA and his earliest dance jobs working with stars like Olivia Newton-John in the "Totally Hot" video. He also talks about his long creative relationship with Michael Jackson, working first as a dancer in the “Beat It” and “Thriller” videos then choreographing Michael's epic “Smooth Criminal” video, which features that gravity-defying lean move that Dennis had several questions about. Other topics include: why choreographers need and deserve a union, saving pieces of floor from the "Thriller Room" the late great Debbie Reynolds Dance Studio in North Hollywood, what it was like to be part of the L.A. dance community during the AIDS crisis, talking about sex and masturbation with Michael Jackson, hanging out with Bubbles the Chimp and what Vincent thinks about when he hears a Michael Jackson song today. We get deep into Madonna and much more in Part 2.    http://www.vincentpaterson.com

Jared kindly refers to this franchise as the McDonald's of television and Kay wants to know just how many Dyson Airwraps were used in the making of these intro looks. They also ask the important questions like, is Jesse Palmer a frat bro ghost haunting the halls of the Bachelor mansion, and who the fuck are the Mandrell Sisters?! A chat with Art, Foot, Deanna, and Daryl from Hate Unbound with fans Deli, Mike, Sean, Stewie, and Melinda. We talk about the new Hate Unbound album Darkness Becomes All and their unique songwriting approach which features beers and post hockey rage. The laughs are continuous as we talk about infamous touring stories, first albums, first concerts, and travel destinations such as the Bar-hamas.Darkness Becomes All and McDonaldsFirst off we jump into the new Hate Unbound album called Darkness Becomes All. This a raging metal album full of riffs that dig into the brain with barbed hooks. We talked a bit about how this new album compares to their previous album Plague. Daryl liked Plague, but felt it was a compromise. The new album reflects more on their writing with Foot (drummer) who joined the band after the songs on Plague were written. With the addition of Deanna on bass, Hate Unbound are writing more material that outpaces the devastating songs on Darkness Becomes All.Beer, Hockey, and Vox & HopsWhen we started to talk about songwriting approach, Foot decided it was time to do his famous impression of a McDonald’s drive through attendant. “Yeah, I’ll take a double cheeseburger...do you want an apple pie with that?”. The short answer to the songwriting approach is jamming together in Daryl’s basement with the riffs gathering under the influence of many beers and post hockey rage. In effect, the band is one part band and one part drinking club. This sounds like the perfect combination for fun and creativity.Lyrical inspiration comes in the form of current events, the brutal aspects of life, and movies. Daryl mentioned that the band needed a zombie themed song and Art (vocals) created the lyrics for “Why Won’t You Die”. Not only is this song fun, it is bone crushingly heavy. Perfect for slamming the head off a zombie or two.Part of the beer fueled writing process for Hate Unbound includes trying a new beer each week. Hearing this, I immediately thought of my friend Matt and his podcast called Vox & Hops. The theme there is life, metal, and craft beer. Hate Unbound love craft beer and they are definitely metal, so an interview with Matt sounds like heaven.Fan Questions and Memorable Hate Unbound touring storiesLater in the show, Mike got his connection working and was able to join in to share his praise for Hate Unbound. Mike played guitar in Aventity (great progressive metal band, sadly now defunct) and thoroughly enjoyed playing shows with Hate Unbound. He like the rest of us, love the new Darkness Becomes All albumDeli wanted to know about memorable Hate Unbound shows. Hilarity ensued as Daryl talked about falling off a stage in slow motion. The best however was relaying a story about Hate Unbound’s other guitarist Will (who couldn’t make our call). Apparently Will had Culver’s for dinner prior to a show. Evidently this created a disturbance in the bowels which made its way onto the stage. Hazmat may or may not have been called to address the situation. Not to be outdone in the memorable show moments was Foot at Full Terror Assault. This was his first show with the band. The Full Terror Assault gig was an open air event with camping. It was hotter than hell and super moist. The only way to get supplies was a 30-40 minute shuttle ride to the nearest town. The band entrusted Foot with cash to get as much water as possible. Foot determined that beer was essentially water and returned with only beer. However, given the heat, some of the beers did not make it back from the store given the length of the ride from town. Needless to say, the rest of Hate Unbound will not be sending Foot on the next supply run.Deanna and Art also have some great stories from the road. These involve missing bass guitars and scooters. You’ll have to listen to the episode and enjoy the laughs. Clearly a sense of humor is a must be part of Hate Unbound.First Albums and First ConcertsThe topic of first albums included Deanna learning bass to the master Steve Harris with her first album purchase of Killers by Iron Maiden. Evidently Art’s tastes have moved on from his start with the Offspring. Daryl was another child of the Columbia House cd bonanza which turned him into a big Scorpions fan. Bon Jovi was the first album for Foot. He also found the joy of Columbia House and his mom’s second mortgage is proofThere was also a time when Foot was sure Brett Michaels and Vince Neil were the same dude, since he never saw them in the same place. This led to Daryl’s admission that when he saw the cover of the first Poison album, he thought they were hot chicks. Daryl’s cousin had to break the news that they were in fact dudes.First concerts included Styx, Pat Benatar, The Mandrell Sisters, Air Supply, Creed and Guns and Roses. Not at the same time, but can you imagine. Foot feared for his life at Guns and Roses when Axel walked off the stage, given that crowds were prone to riots at the time. Thankfully no one was injured. Besides, Metallica stole the show. We all gave Mike a pass on seeing Creed. You live and you learn.World TravelersWe may not be able to easily travel the world right now, but that doesn’t mean we can’t think ahead. Destinations from our conversation included Ireland, Portugal, Italy, Germany, and California. Foot, Stewie, and Daryl would all like to check out Wacken in Germany, if we can ever get a ticket. Melinda is actually traveling soon to the San Francisco Bay Area. We all hope she has a great time.Dig into all the stories and many many laughs on this episode of Fans With Bands with Hate Unbound. There's something magical about the musical marriage of a timeless song and a compelling voice, and nowhere is that more evident than on Louise Mandrell's new album Playing Favorites. The 15-song collection includes her take on such well-loved country classics as "Crazy Arms," "He Thinks I Still Care," "You Don't Know Me," "Tennessee Waltz" and "Today I Started Loving You Again." Produced by Nashville legend Buddy Cannon, Time Life is set to release the new album on October 4, 2019. Playing Favorites is a return to the spotlight for Mandrell, who hasn't released a new album in over 30 years. "A lot of people have asked if I've retired and I'd say, 'No, I've been on hiatus' because with my family if you say retired, they expect you to stay that way," says the vivacious brunette, who became an international star working with siblings Barbara and Irlene on the television variety show "Barbara Mandrell and the Mandrell Sisters." Longtime friend Clint Higham encouraged her to record the new album. With Playing Favorites, Mandrell brings a lifetime of experience to the project, infusing each song with a unique blend of passion and professionalism cultivated by years in the spotlight. With one listen, it is obvious her voice has retained all of its sultry warmth, and the relationship she has with these classic songs imbues the project with a soulfulness and emotional weight that resonates with listeners. Working on this album was a labor of love for Mandrell because these songs are old friends with warm memories attached. Among the standards Mandrell puts her stamp on are the Conway Twitty classic "Hello Darlin'" and Johnny Cash's staple "Ring of Fire." Her friendships with both men and with other artists represented on the album make each song that much more special. These days, Mandrell is enjoying a unique moment in her career. She's both an established veteran with a wealth of experience

Barbara Mandrell - Something (1974) She is my entertainer of the year every year. Remember her TV show, Babrbara Mandrell and The Mandrell Sisters? How they'd go from instrument to instrument and play songs that everyone knew? Instrumental virtuosity. Then, in my dream, they'd all pat my head and feed me sugar treats. Then the lessons would begin.  The Supremes - Come Together (1970) Bobby Womack - Something (1970)  Herbie Mann - Come Together (1970)  Chet Atkins & Jerry Reed - Something (1970)  Diana Ross - Come Together (1970) Pretty kick-ass version, even though she sang the same song earlier in the year with The Supremes.  Elvis Presley - Something (1973)  George Benson - Because/Come Together (1970) Had hits later in the decade with "Turn Your Love Around", "Lady Love Me (One More Time)" (which I love), "Breezin'", "This Masquerade", "On Broadway"... 10 Grammys.  James Govan - Something (1970) The Hans Staymer Band - Come Together (1972) People infusing such emotion into basically nonsense lyrics is tribute to the power of these melodies. No excuse for changing those nonsense lyrics, though. "Got to be a looker..."  Jim Nabors - Something (1970)  Ben E King - If You Got To Make A Fool Of Somebody/Come Together (1970)  There are three "mash-ups" on this obscure 1970 album by the man that sang "Save The Last Dance For Me" with The Drifters. A very strange record.  Johnny Rodriguez - Something (1974)  Kin Ping Meh - Come Together (1972)  Lou Rawls - Something (1970?)  Lou Rawls - Feeling Good (1970?)  Syl Johnson - Come Together (1969) Mina - Something (1971)  Come Together - Chairmen Of The Board (1970) This was on the same album as their #3 hit, "Give Me Just A Little More Time". People love that beach music shit. No offense. It's not music.  Phyllis Dillon - Something (1971)  The Israelites - Come Together (1969)  Rod McKuen - Something (1971)  The Mike Curb Congregation - Come Together/Hey Jude (1970) Willie Bobo & The Bo Gents - Come Together (1971)  Electric Screwdrivers - Come Together  Can find nothing.  James Brown - Something (1972)  Ike & Tina Turner - Come Together (1970)  Francois Glorieux - Something (1979)  The Brothers Johnson - Come Together (1976)

Mr. Media Interviews by Bob Andelman

Today's Guest: Louise Mandrell, country singer   (This interview with country singer Louise Mandrell was originally published in the St. Petersburg Times on November 16, 1984. -- Bob Andelman) Louise Mandrell Louise Mandrell bubbles as she talks. It comes across in her stage and television appearances, and it was even apparent in a long distance interview with her from the phone in her bus, parked somewhere in San Antonio, Texas. The middle Mandrell sister is not as well-known as Barbara, but it's not for lack of trying. Louise averages over 200 dates on the concert road each year. "I don't know how many, and I don't wanna know," she said, laughing. "Last year I got off the road for three months, but it was not by choice. The doctors took me off. This time I planned a vacation." Why does she tour so much? "I like it. It's my favorite part of the music business. I just feel like I work like everybody else. Everyone else works every day ... " NOT EVERYONE else watched by thousands of people when they work or has to look fabulous every day; even a star can get tired of that. Almost. "There are mornings that I'm absolutely exhausted and can't get out of bed because I dread getting in front of the mirror and putting on makeup. But as soon as I walk out of my hotel room or my bus and one person says, 'gee, you look nice,' or 'I "- liked your show,' it's worth it. I don't know any woman - or any man who doesn't appreciate a good pat on the back. Luckily, in my business, I get that," she said. Mandrell first blossomed on NBC-TV's 1980-82 show Barbara Mandrell and-die Mandrell Sisters, which also featured younger sister Irlene, now a regular on Hee Haw. Television was an even tougher grind than touring, she said. "What I'm doing now is time demanding, but it's not as much pressure. When we did a TV show for each week, we had to learn the dialogue, dances we had never danced before, all the instrumentals to that week's song. Then on Friday you finished taping, and they handed you a script and said, 'Okay, here's next week's.' It was a wonderful time, and it was an exhausting time. "I really believe what made our show a hit wasn't necessarily the music," she added. "I'm not saying it didn't help, but I feel that what made that show work was that we were honest. If we made a mistake, we laughed, we went on. People could tell we all loved each other. We could say anything to each other because we were sisters. We could pour water on the head or throw a pie ... For the first year, I got so tired of hearing, 'Do y'all really do that stuff all the time?' Well, of course I don't go around throwing pies at my sister. I mean, that would not be a popular thing to do." Not every day, perhaps, but for Barbara's 30th birthday, Mandrell decided to throw a surprise party attended by 100 friends. "The surprise was I had an exploding cake. The whole evening was just a riot. I thought, we have fun on TV, let's just go for it. What's she going to do (to me) with all these people around?" HER WINTER vacation plans include Christmas in Aspen with Barbara, who is still recovering from a painful auto accident. "She's doing better each day," Mandrell said. "Right now, it's just a matter of time. I feel lost because people say, 'How much time?' We don't know. She's got a serious broken leg, and her ankle's broke, and her knee is banged up - all of it on her right leg. So it's hard for us to say Barbara will be well next month, January or next March." Before she became a solo singer, Mandrell went through many musical stages, beginning as an electric bassist. "My mother used to play it in the Mandrell Family Band. She wanted to retire, and they wouldn't let her so she taught me." She eventually became an original member of Barbara's "Do-Rites" band, later backing up Grand Ole Opry star Stu Philips and spending a year with Merle Haggard. LOUISE MANDRELL interview excerpt: "I really believe what made our show a hit wasn't necessarily the music," she added. "I'm not saying it didn't help, but I feel that what made that show work was that we were honest. If we made a mistake, we laughed, we went on. People could tell we all loved each other. We could say anything to each other because we were sisters. We could pour water on the head or throw a pie ... In 1977, Mandrell signed a recording _contract and a year later met her husband, songwriter R.C. Bannon. For the three years preceding the TV show, she performed with Bannon, releasing songs like "Reunited," "Me and My R.C." and "You're My Super Woman, You're My Incredible Man." On her own, she has released three albums since 1982: Close-Up, Too Hot to Sleep and the latest, I'm Not Through Loving You Yet. The title reached number seven on Billboard's country charts, and "This Bed Is Not Big Enough" has just been released. MANDRELL HAS a reputation for mounting lively, energetic and colorful stage productions. This year, the word patriotic can be added to that description. "I feel people aren't just coming to my concert to say, 'Okay, sing your records,” she said. "Hopefully, they like Louise Mandrell and want to know more about her." In preparing for the current tour, "I said I want to do an American tribute and I don't want to sing the same stuff everybody else sings. R.C. said 'Okay, I can take care of that, I'll write you some special material.' I said, 'That isn't enough. Think for a minute. Pretend we're at a parade. Just think America, apple pie, banners. What makes a statement that says: Hey, I believe in. our country?' " The answer was a combination of military songs, the Pledge of Allegiance, special songs and a precision rifle drill. "I'd never even twirled a baton," she remarked, but the number has become the hit of her shows. "I feel awkward after I do my number," she said. "When they start clapping and yelling and going wild, I know It's not for me. Or it shouldn't be for me. It's for what I believe in and what they believe in. That’s why, at the end of my number, I always have the veterans stand up. I don't walk off to that applause. I sing a closer afterwards. That applause was not for me, and I can't walk off and ignore what they just did. So I don't leave the stage. I'm real funny about it. I don't want people to start thinking that I took for granted what they did. They're standing for America ... I am probably one of the hammiest people you'll meet in your life. I will take applause when I feel I deserve it." Louise Mandrell Website • Facebook • Instagram • Wikipedia • IMDB The Millionaire's Convenient Arrangementby Jane Peden.
