We look at the political ramifications both domestically and internationally, how the west & Russia have fared militarily, and the lives of the Ukrainians affected by the conflict. On this edition of Parallax Views, Mark Ames, journalist and co-host of the popular podcast Radio War Nerd w/ John Dolan (aka Gary Brecher), joins the show to discuss his 2014 NFSFWCORP piece "The Kings of Garbage, or, The ADL Spied on Me and All I Got Was This Lousy Index Card". Due to his anti-apartheid activism at Berkeley, Mark Ames found out in the 90s that he'd been spied upon by the ADL. His file listed him marked him as a "Pinko". This leads us into the story of Roy Bullock, an investigator who spied on anti-Apartheid activists for the Anti-Defamation League and the South African apartheid regime. Working with SFPD intelligence officer Tom Gerard (who also had a spooky background involving CIA dirty wars in Latin America), Bullock was involved in all kinds of skullduggery, including a case that almost led to the murder of a Simon Wiesenthal Center researcher so that an ADL researcher could take his job and make some extra cash. It's a wild story that involves a spy ring within the ADL spying on American anti-apartheid activists. This also takes us into a discussion of how the Irwin Sewell and the ADL had dossiers on antifascist researchers like Chip Berlet of Political Research Associates, the relationship between Israel and South African apartheid, the ADL's shift from focusing on far-right movement like the John Birchers to left wing activists in Berkeley and Arab Americans, the Arab American Anti-Discrimination Committee and the car bombing assassination of Palestinian activist Alex Odeh, Abe Foxman (national director of the Anti-Defamation League from 1987 to 2015), the FBI (and LA Times?) vs. the ADL, ADL CEO Jonathan Greenblatt's embrace of Elon Musk (and curious comments comparing him favorably to noted antisemite Henry Ford), ADL spying on black Americans like former Congressman Ron Dellums, the ADL as part of the National Security State, philosemitic antisemitism, Israel as being its own worst enemy, the canceling of author and journalist Vincent Bevins in Germany, and more.
In this special episode, we explore the evolution of adventure therapy certifications with Fred Borroel, a humble leader in the field. Fred shares his journey into adventure therapy and his contributions through his private practice at San Antonio Adventure Therapy and as the Certification Chair at the Association for Experiential Education (AEE.org). The discussion centers on the newly introduced Certified Clinical Adventure Therapist (CCAT) and Certified Therapeutic Adventure Specialist (CTAS) certifications. Fred delves into the history and rationale behind their development, the eligibility criteria, and the process of obtaining these prestigious credentials. He emphasizes the importance of inclusivity in the field, especially for professionals without traditional academic qualifications like a master's degree. The episode also pays homage to trailblazers like Mark Ames and many others as well as reflects on the post-pandemic surge in outdoor therapeutic practices. Looking ahead, Fred discusses plans to expand the community of adventure-based therapists, including developing a CCAT Supervisor credential to mentor and support newcomers to the field. Season 17 of Stories from the Field is focused on Anxiety and is underwritten by Mountain Valley Treatment Center. This is a special episode focused on a special topic.
Mark Ames recounts the absurd lengths the ADL went to spying on U.S. citizens on behalf of foreign regimes, including apartheid South Africa. Subscribe today for access to the full episode and all premium episodes! www.patreon.com/chapotraphouse

Marianne Williamson is a political activist, author, non-denominational spiritual lecturer and New York Times bestselling author. She began in the 1980's, during which time she became deeply involved with HIV/AIDS activism. A long-time champion for the LGBTQ+ community, she founded Project Angel Food to deliver meals to the homebound unable to shop or cook for themselves. She has written 15 books, 7 New York Times bestsellers and 4 of them hitting #1. In 2020 she ran for the Democratic nomination for President of the United States, and is now a candidate challenging the candidacies of President Biden and Robert F. Kennedy Jr.. As an essential part of her platform Williamson proposes a 21st Century Economic Bill of Rights, a Department of Peace, reparations for slavery, a Department of Children and Youth, and a just transition from a dirty to a clean economy. A progressive Democrat, Williamson proposes a new economic beginning including universal health care, tuition free college and tech school, and a guaranteed living wage. For the closing episode of 2022, Evgenia and I talked to our good friend Mark Ames.We touch on a bunch of things — The eXile, his escape from suburban California, him going native in Russia and then re-integrating into America. We also talk quite a bit about journalism in America: how we got screwed over for our Tea Party-Koch scoop, how Mark's reporting stopped Larry Summer from becoming US Treasury Secretary, and how the American way of silencing journalists can be more sadistic than the Russian way, which is just to kill them.Happy New Year!—Yasha LevineWant to know more? Check out previous episodes of The Russians.PS: We've published a lot of things this year. A lot of has been related to Putin's cursed invasion of Ukraine. We also did a bunch Soviet and Russian history, things about my own Ukrainian-Jewish family, and Evgenia's essays on Russian political culture. We've also done some great interviews on the politics of technology. Then there's been the stuff about California water oligarchs and the Pistachios War doc that will be finished in the first half of 2023.So to close off the year, I figured I'd go along with media tradition and send out a list of the ten or so things that Evgenia and I published this year that I particularly liked. So here's 2022 in review. The best of a cursed year. In no particular chronological order:* Christmas Special — Immigration, Capitalism, Trans Politics* The Ayahuasca Special* Welcome to the "RuZZkiy Mir" by Evgenia Kovda* “Operation Z”* My Ukrainian grandma and our lost history of pogroms by Yasha Levine* The Jetsonian Left w/Anthony Galluzzo* Escape from Russia* The Politics of Technology w/Joe Costello* Philip K. Dick's fiction is our nonfiction by Evgenia Kovda* The Holodomor and the erasure of Jewish victims by Yasha Levine* Lenin's flesh (and no blood)* Private islands, forgotten California oligarchs, and Jewish converts. Part II picks up where we leave off at the end of Part I; discussing the roots of the ahistorical connection so many white Southerners make in believing that the (Catholic NOT Protestant) Scottish Highlanders, who were defeated at Culloden in 1745, were somehow the antecedent of antebellum proto-Confederate culture & society.https://youtu.be/pV4NmstF0CICredit (above link): Trailer of Al Davis & Pete Rozelle ESPN 30 for 30 film (2021).John recounts his memories of the December 23rd, 1972 AFC Divisional Round playoff game between the Oakland Raiders and Pittsburgh Steelers from Three Rivers Stadium in Pittsburgh; this is the game either famously or infamously -depending on your allegiance- known as "the Immaculate Reception." This week, I spoke to Matt Taibbi, contributing editor to Rolling Stone, journalistic heir to Hunter S. Thompson, and author of serial novel The Business Secrets of Drug Dealing: Adventures of the Unidentified Black Male (published on Substack).I started the discussion by asking Taibbi about his views of the current state of the dopamine-driven attention economy, where loudmouths and outrage merchants are outcompeting journalists to drive popular narratives. “You’re just constantly checking and checking and checking, and it’s this anxiety generating behavior pattern that pushes people to places that they’ve never been before in the media.”Indeed, in late 2017 Taibbi was caught up in a social media-driven storm that tainted his reputation. After some satirical and highly objectionable passages from a 2000 book Taibbi co-authored with Mark Ames in Russia were circulated on Twitter, Taibbi was branded a misogynist and lumped in with Harvey Weinstein as a #MeToo offender. While Taibbi’s former female colleagues have defended him and some publications have issued corrections, the damage was done. Taibbi discusses the fall-out and his regrets at length in this interview.“Once the genie’s out of the bottle, it just never goes back in. And once something’s on the internet, it’s like a social disease—it just never goes away. It was a devastating experience and it was also a very chastening experience.”Taibbi has continued to write for the Rolling Stone, building on his reputation as a reporter who excoriates political grift, shines a light on America’s darkest policies, and holds Big Finance to account (he famously described Goldman Sachs as “a great vampire squid wrapped around the face of humanity”). Here, he talks about his career, how he sees the mission of the journalist, and his fears about the slippery slope of state-sponsored censorship. He also tells the behind-the-scenes story of what really happened to Racket, the Pierre Omidyar-funded publication that never was.Taibbi is one of the most fascinating figures in contemporary American media and this interview is packed with personal reflection, insight, and little flecks of optimism. The increased aggression towards Russia from US politicians and media is made more clear when taking into account the real history of the post-Soviet period. The hidden story of Boris Yeltsin’s presidency explains how deeply the US government, along with Western capitalist institutions, cheered, shaped and exploited the country after the fall of the Soviet Union, paving the way for the political system they all condemn today. To uncover just how much the US Empire has interfered in Russia’s political evolution, Abby Martin interviews Mark Ames, an American journalist who spent a decade reporting from Yeltsin’ and Putin’s Russia and witnessed the country’s transformation from an American “colony” to it’s “number one threat.” FOLLOW // http://twitter.com/empirefiles LIKE // http://facebook.com/theempirefiles
Hosts Rania Khalek and Kevin Gosztola are joined by Mark Ames, a journalist and co-host of the Radio War Nerd podcast. He also is the co-author of "The Exile: Sex, Drugs, and Libel in the New Russia" and "Going Postal: Rage, Murder, and Rebellion from Reagan's Workplaces to Clinton's Columbine and Beyond." He worked on a satirical publication that was shut down by the Kremlin. Ames joins the show to talk about the history of the United States government's meddling in Russia, especially how the government backed Boris Yeltsin to lead the country. He addresses the frenzy over Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin and the complete lack of evidence of conspiracy. He also discusses Putin and who he is as a leader and how it is ridiculous to suggest Putin is similar to Trump. There is no discussion portion because Ames talked with us for a full hour.
