In this episode I sit down with biochemist Dr Libby Weaver, a nutritionist, speaker, and author of 13 books (soon to be 14). Libby brings a holistic lens to wellbeing, combining science, nutrition, and emotional insight in a way that’s both practical and also deeply human. We explore the gap between what we know and what we do, and why that gap exists. Libby unpacks the power of belief systems – how they quietly shape our choices, our habits, and even our health. We talk about stress, sugar cravings, hormone changes, perimenopause, self-talk, and the importance of iron, all woven through with her gentle encouragement to be curious, not critical. What I loved most is Libby’s message that our bodies are not betraying us – they’re whispering to us. And if we pause to listen, we might just discover the kind of deep wisdom and clarity we’ve been hunting for in all the wrong places. This kōrero is science-meets-soul, and a gentle nudge toward greater kindness – to ourselves, and to our brilliant, hardworking bodies. Kia ora e hoa mā! I'm Petra Bagust and Grey Areas is back for season 7, and I have to say I'm so excited for this season. You know how sometimes you just have a good feeling about things? And look, something I've learned from our conversations is that life rarely fits into tidy boxes. It spills over the edges, it surprises us, it challenges what we thought we knew, and that's where most of the interesting kōrero happens - at the edges, down a rabbit hole, on a tangent in the 'grey areas'. And so this season, we explore more of those spaces with guests who bring music, wisdom, science, and lived experience to the table. Let me tempt you with some of our guests this season. I sit down with the extraordinary Nadia Reid. She's a singer-songwriter whose music speaks to the heart in ways that words alone never could. Sports leader Raelene Castle, who talks about high pressure leadership at times being the woman in a man's world, while dealing with very real personal challenges and still nailing it. And renowned nutritionist, Doctor Libby Weaver, who is helping reshape the way we think about nurturing our bodies and minds in a world that's constantly changing - at a time when, let's face it, we are constantly changing. We also connect with two of Aotearoa's most celebrated actors, Michael Hurst and Jennifer Ward-Leaand, as they open up about their latest stage production, a raw personal look at the realities of dementia. And we widen the lens with Dame Anne Salmond, an academic and thinker whose work challenges us to see our place in the world and in history with fresh eyes. I tackle the hot button topic of ADHD which I realise is both compelling and repelling, but this season, it's personal. There is, let's face it, no right or wrong way to navigate life's grey areas, but there is something powerful in sitting with the questions, hearing different perspectives, soaking up ideas and holding space for the messy, beautiful in between, because those can be the spaces where we begin to find our way. Join me for season 7 of Grey Areas. I can't wait to share it with you. New episodes drop every week from Thursday, March 6th, and please follow the show wherever you get your favourite podcasts, so that you'll never miss an episode. Ka kite ano, see you soon. Dr Libby Weaver Nutritional, biochemist and multiple best-selling author talks with Angela about the three pillars of biochemical, nutritional and emotional which underpin her work and why our beliefs and perception drive our behaviours. When we make choices about foods that don't serve us it's never about the food it's the way we distance ourselves from the way we perceive things are when they are not how we want them to be and this fascinating episode explores how the combination of science, belief systems and nutrition is key in achieving effortless weight loss. KEY TAKEAWAYS There are consequences to shifts in our bio-chemistry There is no one way for everyone to eat because everyone is different. What everyone should do is eat a diet that is based on real wholefoods The focus needs to be on creating good energy and nourishment Detoxification is a process that is always going on inside of us but can be impacted by lifestyle choices Detoxification is a change process; the liver takes toxic substances and changes them so that they become harmless Eating a wide range of whole real foods supports the liver with detoxification Constantly elevated stress levels start to change the fuel the body perceives as being safe to use When the body is under stress it looks for a fast-burning fuel and it looks to glucose. The pattern of adrenalin production today has resulted in inflammatory compounds in the body High levels of adrenalin create inflammation and cortisol has to increase to deal with this Your body responds to the information you give it Our actions are driven by our beliefs and how we perceive ourselves We construct ourselves and live as if we need approval and in unpacking the beliefs you have created you need to be flexible about how others perceive you You have to do the inner work if you want to make changes to your beliefs It's never about the food its always about the emotions Humans will do more to avoid pain than gain pleasure Ask yourself if what you are thinking is really true? BEST MOMENTS ‘Every single second there are billions of biochemical reactions going on inside of us that create how we feel, function and look' ‘We are completely governed by how we feel' ‘Life can be incredibly challenging and simultaneously mind-blowingly magnificent' VALUABLE RESOURCES Get a free snapshot of your health and personalised report at www.yourtotalhealthcheck.com Join The High Performance Health CommunityUse ANGELA15 to save 15% on Primeadine Spermidine at angelafoster.me/primeadine ABOUT THE HOST Angela Foster is an award winning Nutritionist, Health & Performance Coach, Speaker and Host of the High Performance Health podcast. Angela is joined by Dr Libby Weaver to discuss the complex relationship between women's bodies and achieving the ideal body composition. Drawing from personal experiences and observations with patients, they challenge the traditional belief that calorie restriction and intense exercise are the only factors influencing body shape and size. The discussion highlights the impact of stress hormones, particularly adrenaline, on the body's ability to burn fat and store fat KEY TAKEAWAYS The traditional belief that the calorie equation is the sole factor influencing body shape and size is challenged by real-life experiences where calorie restriction does not always lead to weight loss. The idea that intense exercise is necessary to maintain weight or body shape can be deeply ingrained, leading individuals to over-exercise unnecessarily. Elevated adrenaline levels due to psychological stress, rather than physical danger, can disrupt the body's natural processes, affecting digestion, fuel utilisation, and food cravings. Modern lifestyles with constant stressors can lead to chronically elevated adrenaline levels, impacting the body's ability to use fat as fuel and increasing cravings for sugary foods. BEST MOMENTS "You meet people who are very good at restricting calories and they still don't lose any body fat, they don't lose weight. In fact, sometimes it goes in the opposite direction." "I ran like that because it was so ingrained in me in my education that you had to exercise intensely to maintain the way that you are, to basically be able to eat." "So many women still think like that. And it breaks my heart because they live in this world of, I feel like I've got to eat like a tiny little bird and I've got to exercise like a maniac." "And it's our perceptions of pressure and urgency and it's the way we unconsciously worry about maintaining the approval of others. So in other words, it's caffeine and primarily psychological stress rather than a threat to our life." Australian researchers are calling for a new approach to addressing menopause, amid concerns about 'over-medicalisation'. New research published by the Lancet Series argues for a broader model to support women through this life stage, instead of treating individual symptoms. Nutritional biochemist and author Dr Libby Weaver says women process menopause differently, and not all of them suffer debilitating medical complications. "There are many women who don't suffer at all across the menopausal transition, and some do very mildly, so I think we need a broader conversation about the best ways to support women." Le type 3 c'est : “Brain Type 3 Individuals with Brain Type 3 are often tenacious, persistent, and sometimes stubborn. They tend to struggle with worry, have trouble sleeping, and like things to be done a certain way. Those with Brain Type 3 often have increased activity in the front part of the brain called the anterior cingulate gyrus (ACG). The ACG influences your ability to “go with the flow.” When the ACG is overactive, probably due to low activity of serotonin, people can have problems shifting attention. People with Brain Type 3 don't need more stimulation. In fact, caffeine and diet pills tend to make them worse.” Le 6e s'appelle The Good Life. Angela talks to Dr Libby Weaver, about how her own beliefs about calorie restriction and intense exercise were challenged when she observed that some individuals were not losing body fat despite their efforts. This realisation led her to delve into the factors that influence the body's ability to burn or store fat. She highlights the role of the nervous system and stress hormones in this process, explaining how constantly elevated levels of adrenaline can impact digestion, fuel utilisation, and cravings for sweet foods KEY TAKEAWAYS The calorie equation is not the sole factor influencing body shape and size. Many people who restrict calories do not see significant changes in body fat or weight loss. The belief that intense exercise is necessary to maintain or achieve a certain body shape is ingrained in society, particularly among women. This mindset can lead to unhealthy habits and unrealistic expectations. Constantly elevated levels of adrenaline, primarily caused by caffeine and psychological stress, can have negative effects on the body. It can lead to compromised digestion, increased desire for sweet foods, and a shift in the body's preferred fuel source from fat to glucose. The stress response has three stages, with the first stage characterized by elevated adrenaline. This stage prepares the body for fight or flight and can create inflammatory compounds. BEST MOMENTS "We were taught that the calorie equation was the only thing that influenced body shape and size." "I ran like that because it was so ingrained in me, in my education that you had to exercise intensely to maintain the way that you are to basically be able to eat." "We really are the first generation of people to have constantly, relentlessly elevated levels of adrenaline and it changes our chemistry." "So many people start their biochemistry being told that glucose is their most effective fuel and they gradually start to lose the ability to use their body fat as fuel." Hey Hey Momma! We continue our Healthy for the Holidays series and this week I talk about how we are killing our nervous systems, the damage it is doing to our bodies and then 10 practical things we can put into place to help to bring it back into balance! A lot of what I share is from a book called 'The Rushing Womens Syndrome' by Dr. Libby Weaver which I HIGHLY recommend and also the "Menopausal Reset' by Dr. Mindy Pelz which is much more of a deep dive into menopause and hormones but SO good and eye opening too. It's time for us to take charge of our health, friends and I don't just mean watching what we eat and how many steps we track a day. Our health is so much more involved and truly starts with how we think and how we care for ourselves from the inside out. I'd love to hear what your FAV tips are that you'll try over the holiday season! Here's to a healthy holiday season and 2024! xoxo T.

Getting brilliant advice from the right people with the right information to share when it comes to health and energy is one thing. But when that right person is just exuding joy and vitality it sure is the icing on the (metaphoric, of course) cake that makes you want to go right ahead and embrace that knowledge. Well, it's fair to say Dr. Libby Weaver sure is that kind of person and having this conversation with her was beyond brilliant as she shared some wisdom around everything from being emotionally responsible and having awareness on what we are missing when we 'outsource' our nutrition by way of seemingly 'healthy' convenience and takeaway foods, to quitting sugar (oh dear, I've signed up for her upcoming course) and addressing chronic underconsumption of calories and the psychology around reverse dieting. There's also some serious gold in here for those who are at or nearing menopause. It's fair to say I have deemed Dr. Libby another podcasting bestie of mine. Enjoy! DR. Hello & welcome back!I love trying different things to support my dreams & goals, and one thing that has made a big different in my life is STREAKING. Let me explain… I first heard of streaks through my kids, for who streaking was using Snapchat to message their friends every day without missing a day. The more days in a row, the longer the ‘streak' – and they became obsessed with not missing a day.Streaking is the simple practise of conscious, consistent actions that create life-changing results. And what I've realised is that to make a dream, goal or habit work, it's all about consistency. Small things done every day. Day in, day out. When I start a new dream, goal or habit, I always read about the topic and when I started a habit of daily running some months ago, I read a super inspiring book called Streaking, by Jeffery & Jami Downs - and the authors of this book are my guests on this episode. It's an inspiring read and the insights from Jeffery & Jami are practical and valuable.I loved the book so much that I chose it as our book to read, discuss and implement in GROW – my virtual book group. Click here if you want to learn more or join us in having fun and lively conversations to squeeze the learnings out of this great book.…and if you're in my Platinum Dream Life Coaching Program or thinking of joining, we're going deep in all thing's habits & wellbeing in February – and the concept of streaking is so relevant to building great habits that support you as you chase your dreams. Today, I have the honor of connecting with a friend and colleague, Dr. Vincent Pedre. Dr. Pedre is the Medical Director of Pedre Integrative Health and President of Dr. Pedre Wellness. He is also a board-certified internist and incorporates philosophy and the practice of both western and eastern medical traditions. While growing up, Dr. Pedre often got sick. He remembers taking more than twenty rounds of antibiotics throughout his teenage years. Looking back now, as a gut health expert, he understands that antibiotics cause dysbiosis that leads to a leaky gut. As a result, his immune system stopped working properly, and he became reactive to certain foods. Dr. Pedre and I speak about the gut microbiome, gut health, the power of manifestation, the role of the gut microbiome in the brain, the value of elimination diets, and why plateaus are not to be feared. We talk about the metabolism of certain neurotransmitters and the vagus nerve and discuss circadian biology, fermented foods versus fibrous foods, and the need for tapping into the parasympathetic for proper gut microbiome health and digestion. We also get into proactively supporting the gut microbiome and talk about Dr. Pedre's book, Happy Gut. I hope you enjoy today's fascinating discussion with Dr. Pedre! I look forward to having him back once he has completed his next book. IN THIS EPISODE YOU WILL LEARN: How did Dr. Pedre's health issues while growing up bring him to his current niche? The best ways to evaluate food reactions. What Dr. Pedre tries to teach his patients about the way their bodies react to food. Dr. Pedre shares his inspiration for writing his book, Happy Gut. Why are so many people who never had gut issues before coming up with them now? It takes time, dedication, patience, and trust to heal gut issues. How does the gut microbiome affect the brain? The role and importance of the gut microbiome. Dr. Pedre talks about the vagus nerve and explains how fermented foods can increase vagal tone and benefit the gut microbiome. How do neurotransmitters get produced as by-products of the metabolism? The gut microbiome is the most complex ecosystem on the planet. The impact of fiber versus fermented foods on the microbiome. Dr. Pedre shares some natural ways to nurture the soul, overcome the stresses of our modern lifestyle, and heal the gut. Some simple and easy ways to strengthen your vagal tone. Dr. Pedre shares some vital aspects of what goes on in the digestive system and explains why fasting is so beneficial. What can you do to lessen the likelihood of becoming weight-loss resistant when you fly long distances frequently? Your surroundings affect your state of health.
