The 4th visit for A Collection Of Spaces is with Designer - Michael Marriott. I came across Michaels work from the Modernist Estates Instagram last year. He had a popup market stall inside the new Paul Smith shop at Borough Market and it was great to see the smaller object from his 'Wood Metal Plastic' project in real life. As with a couple of these conversions we connected about a shared interest in local Skateparks, a place that Michael visits with his son and slowly witnessing the communities they foster. We spent the morning at his studio / workshop in Dalston, talking about setting up the space 10 years ago, how it's evolved for him and the projects that have been made there. We spoke about the difference between a workshop & a studio as well as between designers, makers and crafts people. This first part of the conversion wasn't recorded but led us down an interesting path about the layers of visual lenses in the way we see our surrounding be that as a designer, photographer or skateboarder. https://www.michaelmarriott.com https://woodmetalplastic.com https://www.instagram.com/instamarriott2.0 - - - If you would like to contribute to this series then please feel free to get in touch. Welcome to The kbbreview Podcast, your host is Andy Davies, this is Episode Two of Season 13 and we've got a great one for you today as we look into the world of distribution with one of the biggest names in the sector - Waterline. We have a great interview with Michael Marriott, who's the new CEO, and sales director Rob Taylor who's chalked up an astonishing 39 years with the company.Waterline is, of course, owned by Crown Imperial and Michael is the grandson of the founder, continuing the lineage of the family-run business. His brother Barry Head is the current MD of Crown. There are huge changes happening with distribution in the KBB industry - with consolidation, buy outs and big names calling in the administrators. Big brands who always relied on distributors are starting to go direct and margins are getting tighter and tighter across the chain.Against this backdrop, Waterline has just launched its first ever bathroom range - an ambitious move into a very crowded market. So why have they done it, what do they think about the direction of distribution in general, and how does a new CEO get under the skin of such a well-established company? My guest for the 100th episode of Material Matters is a British designer who sits somewhere between industry and craft. Michael Marriott has a fascination with materials – so much so that his web shop is called Wood Metal Plastic – and a love of resourceful design. Over the years he's created furniture for the likes of Established & Sons, SCP, and Very Good and Proper, as well as designing and curating exhibitions, working on interiors, and teaching. However, he seems happiest in his own workshop, working on batch production pieces. It's safe to say he's a pivotal figure in the recent history of British design. In this episode we discuss: standing on the edge of regular design practice; but not being a craftsman; how tools change design and the importance of a jig; creating cost-effective products; why ‘resourceful' could be his middle name; the problem with design as an extension of marketing; his love of wood; not working with big Italian furniture brands; readymades and waste; how a trip to Ford's Dagenham factory changed his life; struggling at school; and his discovery of modernism. It's a delightful way to mark our centenary. Our thanks go to the headline sponsor for this series of the podcast – and the Material Matters 2023 fair – the brilliant lighting specialist, Bert Frank. GARDEN DESIGN TIPS AND TRICKS Michael Marriott and Paul Zimmerman On today's show, we have two of our favorite rosarians who happen to be award-winning garden designers. Michael Marriott and Paul Zimmerman are here to share tips and tricks on garden design just in time to get us going and growing for spring! We will also hear about some wonderful garden tours they are leading this year. This would be a good time to grab your notebook and calendar! Their website and bios are below... MICHAEL MARRIOTT MichaelMarriottRosarian.org Michael Marriott is one of the world's leading rosarians. He is also well-known for his rose garden design and his common sense approach to looking after roses. In his work, he travels the globe, often sharing his expertise in lively radio, TV, newspaper, and magazine interviews. He was an integral part of David Austin Roses for 35 years and at the firm's headquarters in Albrighton where he was the font of knowledge for all matters relating to roses. Michael has played an important part in the development and popularisation of English Roses and therefore has intimate knowledge of all of the 200 plus English Roses bred and introduced by David Austin Roses. His enthusiasm is infectious and his knowledge of roses is encyclopaedic, especially for the species roses, the old roses, the climbers and ramblers, the best modern roses and of course David Austin's English Roses. He is particularly enthusiastic about the very varied fragrances to be found in roses having worked side-by-side with famed “rose nose” Robert Calkin. As a garden designer, he is known for dense romantic beds whether purely roses or mixed in with perennials. He has designed many rose gardens and borders around the world of varying sizes, both public and private. Public gardens include the Royal Botanic Gardens Kew, Queen Mary's Rose Garden in Regent's Park, Hampton Court Palace, Wynyard Hall, Trentham Gardens, and the David Austin garden near Osaka in Japan. His private clients are primarily in the United Kingdom, the United States, and Europe, but he has also worked on gardens in New Zealand, China, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Russia, and even Bhutan. An advocate of practical gardening techniques and organic methods for rose gardeners, he is regularly called upon to conduct workshops, give lectures, and write articles for publications of varying levels of expertise in many different countries. A keen gardener, he recognized his passion for plants at an early age, he believes that a good gardener starts by choosing appropriate plants and varieties for his or her garden's growing conditions, then backs it up with sound soil management. His own gardens have always been run on organic principles, selecting only the healthiest varieties of roses and using other plants to attract beneficial insects. Prior to joining David Austin Roses in 1985, he worked at various rubber, cocoa, and oil palm estates in Papua New Guinea, Sabah and the Solomon Islands. He worked briefly in botanical research in England, after earning a degree in Agricultural Botany in 1976 from Reading University. PAUL ZIMMERMAN PaulZimmermanRoses.com Paul Zimmerman is the owner of Paul Zimmerman Roses, a company dedicated to teaching that “Roses Are Plants, Too”. He was introduced to, and taught about roses and rose horticulture, by among others Dr. Thomas Cairns past President of both the American Rose Society and World Federation of Rose Societies. He was introduced to Old Garden Roses by Steve Jones also a former President of The American Rose Society. He then developed a love for them through a continuing deep friendship with Bob Edberg of Limberlost Roses and Rose Books in California. Along the way, he met Mike Lowe of Lowe's Roses and from there he formed and owned Ashdown Roses Ltd a rose nursery offering A World of Garden Roses, which he closed in 2009 to focus on rose growing education. Paul is one of the original founders of the Tinseltown Rose Society, served as Vice President under Tommy Cairns, then President for two years thereafter. He has written numerous award-winning articles for The Rose, the National Magazine and Annual of the American Rose Society and other gardening magazines. Currently he hosts the blog “Roses Are Plants, Too” on Fine Gardening Magazine's website. He is an active Consulting Rosarian and “Cyber CR” as well. He lectures internationally and has also served as an International juror for numerous Rose Trials. While living in Los Angeles, California Paul founded and ran “Hundred Acre Woods Rosescapeing”, a company specializing in the care, design, and installation of rose gardens; particularly Antique, Shrub, and David Austin Roses. It is this hands-on experience with roses in a general garden setting that Paul draws on for his Talks, YouTube Videos, Articles, and Workshops. In my opinion, Carl Clerkin is one of the most original – and certainly one of the wittiest – designers currently practicing. He graduated from the now-defunct furniture course of the Royal College of Art in the late '90s, a time when many of his contemporaries were dreaming of fame and fortune with a glamorous Italian manufacturer. However, he steered a very different – more local – course. His work, which ranges from industrial to fine art pieces, is always imbued with a sense of narrative and not a little charm. Clerkin is also a teacher at Kingston University and has curated exhibitions such as The Learned Society of Extra Ordinary Objects at London's Somerset House. He returns to the London venue this month with The Beasley Brothers' Repair Shop, as part of the gallery's new show Eternally Yours – an exhibition about repair, care and healing. In this episode we talk about: his new installation at Somerset House and the importance of mending; the role narrative and humour plays in his work; feeling uncomfortable in the art world and becoming a designer by default; growing up in London's Eastend; the influence of Michael Marriott; his love of teaching… and his fascination with buckets. The second ‘lockdown special’ episode of Material Matters features the excellent Sheridan Coakley. The entrepreneur cut his teeth as a modern furniture dealer before founding the iconic SCP – or Sheridan Coakley Products – in London’s Shoreditch during the mid-eighties. The manufacturer and retailer burst onto the nascent British design scene with pieces by Jasper Morrison and Matthew Hilton. In 1991 it produced the latter’s Balzac armchair, which has gone on to become a bona fide classic. Over the years the roll call of designers Sheridan has worked with includes: Konstantin Grcic, James Irvine, Michael Marriott, Donna Wilson, Rachel Whiteread and Reiko Kaneko to name just a handful. He has legitimate claims to be considered one of the most influential figures in British design over the past 35 years. In this episode we talk about his early days; swapping bubblegum cards with artist Eduardo Paolozzi; meeting Jasper Morrison for the first time (in quite surprising circumstances); setting up business in unfashionable east London; copying classics; the state of British design; oh, and the future of retail. So I hope there’s quite a bit to get your teeth into. (Please note this is a special episode made in really quite tricky circumstances, so the sound quality isn’t quite as good as normal.)

Hello and welcome to this week’s episode of the podcast. This week I’m speaking to Richard Stubbs who currently works as the Trade Manager at David Austin but who’s worked in pretty much every department there, including as the Head Gardener of the 2 acre show garden. Richard lectures, designs and advises all over the world and what he doesn’t know about roses you can write on the back of a stamp and still have room to lick it. I asked him about which roses need pruning and which don’t, when to do it, how to do it and how not to do it. Plus, I got some inside information on why you shouldn’t leave the label on a rose when you plant it. About Richard Stubbs: “My interest in gardening stretches back to my childhood as my dad was very knowledgeable and worked in the trade for a number of years after the War. My original intention was to go to college when I left school but due to the poor economy at the time I found myself working for a bank !!! After nearly 15 years I found myself out of work and decided a change of career was the right way to go. As I lived in the village of Albrighton the local unemployment office suggested I went to see David Austin Roses to see if they would consider me under a special Government Scheme at the time. After a quick interview with Michael Marriott the then Nursery Manager I was taken on, on a temporary basis. My first job was to walk through a field full of 900,000 new plants picking up the tops of the rootstocks that had been chopped off to allow the actual varieties to grow on. I loved the place from day one and still do to this day, it’s a family business and everyone who work there is treated very much as members of their family. I was very keen to learn and obtained a copy of Mr Austin’s first book ‘The Heritage of the Rose’ which I found fascinating, and my passion for roses quickly grew. Over the years I have worked in almost all the departments, the breeding section, producing 100’s of thousands of seedlings each year and helping them test possible new varieties for various attributes, the production department, growing the roses, lifting them from the fields and packing them up to send to our customers, and for many years the head gardener of the 2 acre show garden. The garden was my passion and I became almost obsessive about it trying to make sure it was kept to a very high standard (not easy with only one person to look after nearly 5000 roses of all different shapes and sizes). I loved working and listening to Mr Austin on a daily basis and the memories of this time will live for ever. After a short break to look after people’s gardens in the area I started back at DAR but this time in the office, passing on my knowledge to our customers and processing orders. That was nearly 15 years ago now and I have had various positions in the offices including office manager. My main role now is to look after all our trade customers (apart from Garden Centres), so Local Councils, National Trust, large public estates, garden designers and landscapers. I am also responsible for staff technical training and one of my favourite jobs is designing rose gardens for either private or trade customers. These can range from a simple small border right up to very large park projects. Mostly it is just advising on what roses to plant where but sometimes you are given a completely blank canvas to work on and I always think it is a wonderful job to be able to create a beautiful rose garden for people to enjoy over many years from a blank space. I also visit gardens in the UK and abroad to advise and my favourite rose garden of all is a garden we created 10 years ago in Assisi Italy and I hold pruning courses there every February. I am very, very passionate about roses and love to share this passion with whoever is willing to listen !!! This is one of the main reason I started The Magnificent Rose group on Facebook along with my wife so people with the same passion could share their pictures and their knowledge with likeminded people all over the world. I also have my own photography page RICMAY PHOTOGRAPHY as I am a keen amateur and love taking flowers and landscapes with my DSLR.” What we talk about: A brief overview of the various types of roses we might find in our gardens Roses that don’t need pruning When to prune The key tenets of rose pruning aka the 3 D’s. Different types of pruning for different types of roses What can go wrong? What would happen if you didn’t prune your rose?
