Maar het is nog geen 100 jaar oud. De oorsprong is een radiopraatje.Op 24 juli 1933 vertelde gloednieuw president Franklin Delano Roosevelt dat hij na een drie maanden lange wervelwind aan wetten, maatregelen en investeringsimpulsen ‘a mental picture' wilde schetsen van zijn strategie daarbij. En zo werd 'The First 100 Days' een van de vele innovaties van politiek en bestuur waar FDR en zijn New Deal hun stempel op drukten. Donald Trump lijkt de start van zijn tweede termijn daar direct aan te ontlenen, heel anders dan in 2016.FDR werd sowieso de gouden standaard van daadkracht, durf, ongeremde energie en politiek machiavellisme van de buitencategorie. Zijn jeugdige opvolger in 1961, John F. Kennedy, was de eerste die ook zo'n 100 dagen-strategie ambieerde. PG vertelt in welk drijfzand en chaos Kennedy terecht kwam. Wellicht een schrale troost voor Dick Schoof.Ook in Duitsland kent de historie zo'n veelbelovend begin van een nieuwe leider. Willy Brandt heette niet voor niets 'de Duitse Kennedy'. Hoe hij zijn regering van jonge doeners na de lange jaren van de stokoude, autoritaire staatsman Konrad Adenauer startte, is politiek zeer leerzaam.In ons land liet Ruud Lubbers zien hoe je dat doet. Hij kon zijn strakke, lange termijn saneringsagenda met panache brengen, niet in het minst doordat de polder eieren voor zijn geld koos met het Akkoord van Wassenaar. PG vertelt hoe op het ministerie van Onderwijs de ambtelijke top niet meteen voor waar wilde aannemen, dat hun minister toch echt geheel in die geest van Lubbers zou gaan regeren.Schoofs eerste 100 dagen waren ongekend turbulent en stuurloos. Maar de premier zelf mag je daar niet als eerste verwijten over maken. Hij is de aanvoerder zoals de fractieleiders – Geert Wilders en Pieter Omtzigt voorop – zich die voorstelden. De anti-Rutte, de non-Lubbers.De fictie van ‘een extraparlementair kabinet' maakte de partijloze premier nog ernstiger geïsoleerd. Zijn kabinet begon met vakantie, Olympische juichmomentjes en een geheel ondoorzichtig proces van het schrijven van een regeerprogramma, dat niet van de vier fracties zou zijn. Precies het omgekeerde van de aanpak van FDR of Lubbers.Verwarrender was daarbij dat het kabinet hoopte te beginnen als een harde correctie van daadkracht op de financiële puinhopen die Mark Rutte, Wopke Hoekstra en Sigrid Kaag zouden hebben achtergelaten. Het tegendeel bleek het geval. De begroting en economische ontwikkeling waren opbeurender dan iedereen voor mogelijk had gehouden. De zon gíng schijnen, maar door Kaag - niet door Wilders of Eelco Heinen.Ondanks alle ketelmuziek bleef het verder angstvallig stil. Het migratiebeleid is na 100 dagen blijven steken bij een bevestiging van de aanpak van VVD-staatssecretaris Eric van der Burg tijdens Rutte IV.NSC-staatssecretaris van Belastingen Folkert Idsinga stapte op. Het Belastingplan 2025 kreeg een meerderheid, maar het kwam zwaar gehavend uit het debat. En nog steeds is niet zeker of – en hoe – de Eerste Kamer het zal accepteren.En intussen vertrok nóg een staatssecretaris, Nora Achahbar van Toeslagen, ook NSC. Het team van deze partij lijkt funest verzwakt, terwijl haar leiding dat al was. En premier Schoof blijkt als partijloze ambtenaar niet over de gave te beschikken om zijn ploeg een gezamenlijk idee, een missie en ambitie te verlenen. British sculptor Antony Gormley's (Sir Antony Mark David Gormley OBE RA) work has been widely exhibited throughout the UK and internationally with recent exhibitions at Musée Rodin, Paris (2023); Lehmbruck Museum, Duisburg, Germany (2022); Museum Voorlinden, Wassenaar, Netherlands (2022); National Gallery Singapore, Singapore (2021); Schauwerk Sindelfingen, Germany (2021); Royal Academy of Arts, London (2019); Delos, Greece (2019); Uffizi Gallery, Florence, Italy (2019); Philadelphia Museum of Art, Pennsylvania (2019); Long Museum, Shanghai (2017); and Forte di Belvedere, Florence, Italy (2015) among others! Some permanent public works include the Angel of the North (Gateshead, UK), Another Place (Crosby Beach, UK), and Inside Australia (Lake Ballard, Western Australia). Gormley was awarded the Turner Prize in 1994, the South Bank Prize for Visual Art in 1999, the Bernhard Heiliger Award for Sculpture in 2007, the Obayashi Prize in 2012 and the Praemium Imperiale in 2013. In 1997 he was made an Officer of the British Empire (OBE) and was made a knight in the New Year's Honors list in 2014. He is an Honorary Fellow of the Royal Institute of British Architects, an Honorary Doctor of the University of Cambridge and a Fellow of Trinity and Jesus Colleges, Cambridge. Ben Luke talks to Michaël Borremans about his influences—from writers to musicians, film-makers and, of course, other artists—and the cultural experiences that have shaped his life and work. Borremans, born in 1963 in Geraardsbergen in Belgium, is one of the most original painters working today. He marries a technical brilliance, born of a careful study of the style and touch of the Old Masters, with a sensibility and atmosphere that are completely his own. Though they depict figures, objects and environments, his paintings remain enigmatic, refusing to settle into easily readable narratives. They are full of uncanny detail and incident which is all the more pronounced because of his sensual handling of the paint. Though he is a perceptive observer of people, things and space, Borremans says he paints culture as opposed to nature. When he makes a painting of a human face, for instance, he is not concerned with the mimetic process of portraiture, rather with a perception of the ineffable nature of human psychology; with what it might mean to be—and to represent—a human being today. Even though it is characterised by an often absurd playfulness, an abiding sense of isolation and disquiet permeates Michaël's work. He discusses the ongoing influence of Francisco de Goya, Diego Velázquez and Jean-Siméon Chardin, the inspirational comedy of Monty Python, the profound writing of Vladimir Nabokov, and his love of music by everyone from Franz Schubert to Taylor Swift. À l'occasion de son exposition Critical Mass au Musée Rodin, l'artiste Antony Gormley dialogue avec Guitemie Maldonado, historienne de l'art et professeure aux Beaux-Arts de Paris, autour de sa pratique de sculpteur. Antony Gormley est né à Londres en 1950. Depuis plus de quarante ans, il explore les relations de l'homme à l'espace qui l'entoure à travers le corps humain. Il présente actuellement l'exposition Critical Mass au Musée Rodin (jusqu'au 3 mars 2024), dans laquelle ses œuvres dialoguent avec celles d'Auguste Rodin, invitant les visiteurs à s'interroger sur les deux sculpteurs et leur volonté commune d'utiliser le rôle du corps en tant que sujet de la sculpture mais aussi comme objet et outil de questionnement. In de recente aflevering van EW Zihnigasten zit gastheer Zihni Ozdil tegenover auteur Jaap Cohen, bekend van zijn recent verschenen boek 'De bolle Gogh', een biografie over Theo van Gogh.Theo van Gogh, opgegroeid in een welgesteld milieu in Wassenaar, transformeerde in korte tijd tot een van de meest controversiële figuren in Nederland. Van cineast tot columnist en zelfs 'predikant van de nihilistische gemeente', stond hij bekend om zijn tumultueuze uitingen. Hij hekelde de exploitatie van (oorlogs)leed en beschouwde de islam als een bedreiging voor westerse waarden, een kunstvorm waarin hij meesterlijk was.Toch koesterde Van Gogh een uitgebreid netwerk van vrienden, waarbij acteurs en actrices een prominente rol speelden. Bovendien stond hij bekend als een interviewer die via schijnbaar luchtige gesprekken probeerde antwoorden te vinden op levensvragen waar hij zelf mee worstelde.De vraag die velen bezighoudt, is waar Van Goghs onverzadigbare drang om te beledigen vandaan kwam. Speelden zijn familieachtergrond, met een oorlogsgeschiedenis van zijn ouders en zijn afstamming van de beroemde schilder, een rol? Jaap Cohen ging in zijn onderzoek diep, met meer dan 150 interviews met familieleden, collega's, vrienden en zelfs vijanden, om inzicht te krijgen in deze raadselachtige persoonlijkheid, die overal waar hij kwam verwarring zaaide - totdat zijn leven bruut werd beëindigd.

Jonas Wood makes paintings that can be classified as a variety of different genres, including portraits, still lifes, landscapes, and interior scenes. In each of these, however, his work reflects an instantly recognizable vision of the contemporary world, as well as a personal approach to subject matter defined by his affinities and experiences. Its warmth is matched by a quasi-abstract logic that breaks pictures down into layered compositions of geometry, pattern, and color. Wood works at every scale, and maintains active drawing and printmaking practices, each of which helps him generate techniques that he eventually uses in paintings. Conjuring depth using flat forms—his process involves collage-based studies in which he works with photographs, breaking images apart and reassembling them—Wood probes the boundary between the new and the familiar, integrating emotionally resonant material from everyday life. Jonas Wood has been the subject of solo and two-person exhibitions at the Dallas Museum of Art (2019); Museum Voorlinden, Wassenaar, the Netherlands (with Shio Kusaka, 2017); Lever House, New York (2014); and Hammer Museum, Los Angeles (2010). De laatste dagen van november 1982 schreven geschiedenis. De jongste premier van de twintigste eeuw trad aan in een dramatische sociaaleconomische en financiële crisis, een energiecrisis en grote spanningen tussen Moskou en het Westen. Het aantreden van Ruud Lubbers en zijn nieuwe kabinet zorgde onmiddellijk voor een van de grootste doorbraken in de historie van de Nederlandse economie: het Akkoord van Wassenaar. Jaap Jansen en PG Kroeger bespreken wat er in die dagen gebeurde achter de schermen, prikken legendes door en trekken lessen voor de crisis van 2022.FNV-voorzitter Wim Kok was er eerlijk over: “Het was een noodsprong." Ondernemersvoorzitter Chris van Veen noemde de plannen van het nieuwe kabinet ‘faliekant verkeerd'. De premier en zijn 'sterke man' in dat kabinet, minister Jan de Koning van Sociale Zaken en Werkgelegenheid, vonden dat helemaal niet erg. Dit dwong immers 'de polder' zijn knopen te tellen.De Koning dreigde doodleuk met een 'loonpauze' en het drong al snel door dat hij alle salarissen in de marktsector voor 4 jaar zou bevriezen. “Als het niet kan zoals het moet, dan moet het maar zoals het kan”, was niet voor niets een bekend motto van hem. Kok en Van Veen kropen in paniek bijeen en vonden elkaar vlak voordat Lubbers in de Tweede Kamer zijn regeringsverklaring zou uitspreken. Hoe dat ging is een spannende detective.De gebeurtenissen van deze dagen en weken werden de bron van gevleugelde woorden en ook van mythen. ‘Vanuit een positieve grondhouding' tot ‘inlegvel'. En van het eerste besef van Lubbers' oneindige creativiteit en het eerste moment dat zijn Lubberiaanse toverformules ook zijn collegaministers konden onthutsen. Schatkistbewaarder Onno Ruding was decennia later nog buitengewoon pissig. Sinds 1982 werd de roep om 'een tweede Wassenaar' keer op keer gehoord. Afgelopen week weer in de Eerste Kamer. Jaap en PG analyseren hoezeer de huidige economische crisis exact de omgekeerde is van die van de Lubbers-jaren. Dat maakt zo'n renaissance van Wassenaar een nog spannender gedachte. Robert Zandvliet is one of the foremost Dutch painters working today, whose work has been on the cusp of abstraction and representation since the early 1990's. He examines the tension between self-reflective artistic practice and painting bound to a representational function. His pictures arise out of a movement between opposites, a symbiotic relationship between deliberate composition and chance occurrence, abstraction and figuration, part and whole, space and surface, and in which these elements are fused into polyphonic structures that re-envision the history of painting through his own lens. Oftentimes using landscape as a conceptual frame of reference, recognizable representations of a landscape become replaced by a gestural play of lines, colors, and surfaces that shift and merge foreground and background, reorienting the viewer's perception of depth and surface.
