I denne episode af Bak Lane får jeg besøg af min tidligere holdkammerat fra Team CSC/Saxo Bank (2008-2009), André Steensen. Som junior- og U23-rytter var han et af Europas største talenter, men overgangen til de professionelles rækker blev svær, og allerede som 26-årig lagde han cyklen på hylden. Hvorfor? Det dykker vi ned i. Men Andrés historie stopper ikke der. Efter karrieren skiftede han til trænergerningen og stod i flere år bag profiler som Michael Valgren og Mads Pedersen – faktisk var han Mads' træner, da han blev verdensmester i 2019. Derudover har han haft rollen som sportsdirektør på Cult Energy og Stölting. Det blev noget af en begivenhedsrig og dramatisk uge for dansk cykelsport, da Mads P viste enormt gode bjergben og vandt såvel en etape som den grønne trøje i Paris-Nice, mens både Jonas Vingegaard, Mattias Skjelmose og Michael Valgren måtte en tur i asfalten på de franske og italienske veje. Valgren fortæller i denne episode om sit første kravebensbrud, ambitionerne for resten af sæsonen og resten af karrieren. Dagens gæst i Bak Lane har haft en stor betydning for dansk cykelsport – og jeg var selv så heldig at være hans holdkammerat på Team Fakta tilbage i 2002 & 2003.   Michael Skelde var en hård og dedikeret væddeløber i slutningen af 90'erne, men et alvorligt styrt satte en stopper for den store internationale karriere. Hans passion for cykelsporten og dansk talentudvikling førte ham dog videre til et nyt kapitel, hvor han stod i spidsen for en af Danmarks – og Europas – største talentfabrikker: Glud & Marstrand LRØ og Team Cult Energy. So, this is it, my final race as a professional cyclist. When I announced I'd be retiring at the end of this season I didn't know what my last race would be, but then fate stepped in. Paris-Roubaix – a race I've truly loved over the years, was rescheduled from its usual April spot to an end-of-season Sunday in October. It seemed fitting to ride this brutal race to close my career. It's been quite a journey to get here, especially after fracturing my elbow in a crash at the Benelux Tour in early September. With so many high-calibre Classics riders in our team I wasn't guaranteed a start. It was touch-and-go whether I'd be on the start line in Compiègne for the Hell of the North and there were even moments in my final preparation race when I had my doubts. This episode tells the story of my final week as a professional cyclist. Join me along the way as I get ready for the race with my current teammates – Tom Scully, Michael Valgren and Stefan Bisseger, catch up with some of my best friends in the peloton, Bert de Backer, Luke Durbridge, Sam Bewley, Jack Bauer and Mathew Hayman, followed by the aftermath of one of the legendary wet editions of Paris-Roubaix. I've always said I wanted to do at least one wet Paris-Roubaix before I retired but as the rain fell on the morning of the race and everyone retreated into their own thoughts I began to have second thoughts. I won't spoil how the race turned out – you'll have to listen for that – but as one of my old teammates said, very few people in sport get to bow out with a fairytale finish. Having said that, the way my Paris-Roubaix ended turned out to be the perfect send-off. I've loved my professional career but I've learned this year that when it's time, you know it's time. Den offensive danske VM-satsning så på et tidspunkt ud til at give bagslag. Men så ofrede Kasper Asgreen sig for Michael Valgren, der som den eneste fra feltet lukkede hullet til frontgruppen og så kørte Valgren pludselig med om medaljerne ved VM i Flandern. Ingen kunne dog slå den suværene Julian Alaphilippe, som for andet år i træk kunne trække VM-trøjen over skuldrene.

Dansk cykelsport blev i weekenden ramt af den forfærdelige nyhed om Chris Anker Sørensens tragiske og alt for tidlige død. Bare dagen efter var Kasper Asgreen to sekunder fra at vinde VM-bronze i enkeltstart. Landstræner Anders Lund og Michael Valgren er med på telefonen hos Peter Piil, Thomas Bay og Jesper Worre, som sammen forsøger at sætte ord på Chris Anker Sørensen som menneske og cykelrytter, og om den brutale situation de danske VM-ryttere står i.

In the latest episode of the Cyclingnews podcast, brought to you by Sportful and Pinarello, we speak to Michael Valgren about his 2020 season, his time at NTT Pro Cycling and his move to EF Pro Cycling ahead of next year's campaign.   The Danish rider spent two years on the African team and never quite managed to replicate the 2018 form that saw him win Amstel Gold Race but he talks about his motivation, why things didn't work out and how he will fit into EF Pro Cycling's roster. As well as hearing from Valgren, we also start our yearly report card analysis of the WorldTour teams and as Valgren features – and because there's no real method – we start by taking a look at both NTT and EF.   NTT actually started the season incredibly well. They came into 2020 with arguably one of the weakest rosters of the WorldTour teams but they won six races by the time Paris-Nice concluded. They dominated a number of online races during lockdown but once racing resumed they struggled. Giacomo Nizzolo won the European Championships and Ben O'Connor took a fine stage in the Giro d'Italia but there was very little for them to celebrate.   They ended the year with eight wins but the season was really dominated by sponsorship issues and once more the underperformance of several key riders. Sponsorship issues created uncertainty and tension between the management before Assos stepped in to help the team going forward. We analyze the season for NTT, before Procycling's editor Edward Picking – a former teacher no less – provides the team with a report card grade.   Then we head to EF, and the American team that went from 17 wins in 2019 to 17 wins this year. There was no Monument win this time around but the team were aggressive in every format of racing – they won stages in all three Grand Tours and finished on the podium in the Vuelta a España. They also won the Critérium du Dauphiné with one of the best days of racing we saw all year, and even if you strip out the wins they took outside of the WorldTour – for example, the wins in Colombia – they were impressive. Der har været meget negativ omtale om Danmarks Cykle Union de sidste par dage. DCU's formand og bestyrelse er blandt andet blevet anklaget for nepotisme og magtmisbrug.  På dagens etape får du historien om Per Henrik Brasks tid som direktør i DCU i perioden oktober 2015 - ultimo september 2016. Brask tager os alle med bag kulissen i DCU, som var på randen af konkurs. Brask fortæller blandt andet om, hvordan formandskabet og bestyrelsen ikke ville erkende, at økonomien blødte, og at der var røde tal på bundlinjen. Brask oplevede sågar at blive grinet ud af bestyrelsen til et møde, fordi de ikke troede på den kritiske økonomi. Udover det økonomiske kaos, så kommer Brask med et par interessante historier fra OL i Rio 2016. To uger før OL, bliver banelandsholdets fantomdragt testet til at være 4 sekunder langsommere end briternes gamle. En margin på 4 sekunder ville koste 4 km. holdet medalje og af den grund besluttede DCU i samarbejde med Team Danmark at købe nogle hurtigere dragter, på trods af, at dragterne ikke var produceret af landsholdets oprindelige tøjsponsor. Den beslutning blev vital. Danmark havde nok ikke fået bronze, hvis de havde kørt med den oprindelige fantomdragt. På den anden side kom Brask og DCU i store problemer med tøjsponsor, Parentini.  Derudover fortæller Brask også, hvordan DCU's formand, Henrik Jess Jensen, prøvede at overtale ham til at spørge sportschef, Lars Bonde om at udtage Michael Valgren i stedet for Jakob Fuglsang eller Chris Anker Sørensen.  Til sidst kommenterer Brask på de seneste dages mudderkastning og historier i medierne om magtmisbrug og nepotisme i toppen af DCU.  Medvirkende: Per Henrik Brask og Anders Mielke

Anders Mielke har taget en snak med 24 af Danmarks bedste cykelryttere, og hørt dem lidt om 2019 sæsonen, drømmene i 2020, december måned og juledagene som professionel cykelrytter. Det er blevet søndag den 3. advent, og derfor skal vi høre fra en stor dansk kanon. Michael Valgren fra Team Dimension Data er dagens mand i Forhjulslirs julekalender. Valgren fortæller blandt andet om livet i Monaco, hvor ham og konen trives i sydens sol. Det kan godt være at træningsmakkerne i dag hedder Richie Porte og Caleb Ewan, men Valgren glemmer ikke de hårde hunde, Jesper Odgaard og Karsten Mikkelsen hjemme i Thy. Valgren nævner ikke noget om en hvis Ørn fra Herning, men derimod en stork. Der bliver nemlig intet Tour Down Under for Michael Valgrens vedkommende, da han snart skal være far. På denne etape af Forhjulslir får World Tour rytteren, Casper Pedersen fra Team Sunweb debut på viften. Først fortæller Casper om den kaotiske lukning af Aqua Blue Sport i 2018, hvor han lige pludselig stod i en kritisk situation og manglede en ny kontrakt. Casper fandt heldigvis et nyt hold, og valget faldt på Team Sunweb - og netop Sunweb, fortæller Casper meget mere om. Derudover gennemgår vi også Caspers første sæson på World Touren, som bød på store klassikere, såsom, Milano-Sanremo, Flandern Rundt og Paris Roubaix, men også etapeløb i hjælperrollen for Tom Dumoulin, Nicolas Roche og Wilco Kelderman.
