I denne episode af Bak Lane får jeg besøg af min tidligere holdkammerat fra Team CSC/Saxo Bank (2008-2009), André Steensen. Som junior- og U23-rytter var han et af Europas største talenter, men overgangen til de professionelles rækker blev svær, og allerede som 26-årig lagde han cyklen på hylden. Hvorfor? Det dykker vi ned i. Men Andrés historie stopper ikke der. Efter karrieren skiftede han til trænergerningen og stod i flere år bag profiler som Michael Valgren og Mads Pedersen – faktisk var han Mads' træner, da han blev verdensmester i 2019. Derudover har han haft rollen som sportsdirektør på Cult Energy og Stölting. So, this is it, my final race as a professional cyclist. When I announced I'd be retiring at the end of this season I didn't know what my last race would be, but then fate stepped in. Paris-Roubaix – a race I've truly loved over the years, was rescheduled from its usual April spot to an end-of-season Sunday in October. It seemed fitting to ride this brutal race to close my career. It's been quite a journey to get here, especially after fracturing my elbow in a crash at the Benelux Tour in early September. With so many high-calibre Classics riders in our team I wasn't guaranteed a start. It was touch-and-go whether I'd be on the start line in Compiègne for the Hell of the North and there were even moments in my final preparation race when I had my doubts. This episode tells the story of my final week as a professional cyclist. Join me along the way as I get ready for the race with my current teammates – Tom Scully, Michael Valgren and Stefan Bisseger, catch up with some of my best friends in the peloton, Bert de Backer, Luke Durbridge, Sam Bewley, Jack Bauer and Mathew Hayman, followed by the aftermath of one of the legendary wet editions of Paris-Roubaix. I've always said I wanted to do at least one wet Paris-Roubaix before I retired but as the rain fell on the morning of the race and everyone retreated into their own thoughts I began to have second thoughts. I won't spoil how the race turned out – you'll have to listen for that – but as one of my old teammates said, very few people in sport get to bow out with a fairytale finish. Having said that, the way my Paris-Roubaix ended turned out to be the perfect send-off. I've loved my professional career but I've learned this year that when it's time, you know it's time. Julian Alaphilippe becomes the first french rider to defend a world road race title. And Wout van Aert and Remco Evenepoel are not able to get on the podium for Belgium. Michael Valgren finally gets a podium for Denmark at the Worlds.

Den offensive danske VM-satsning så på et tidspunkt ud til at give bagslag. Men så ofrede Kasper Asgreen sig for Michael Valgren, der som den eneste fra feltet lukkede hullet til frontgruppen og så kørte Valgren pludselig med om medaljerne ved VM i Flandern. Ingen kunne dog slå den suværene Julian Alaphilippe, som for andet år i træk kunne trække VM-trøjen over skuldrene.

Dansk cykelsport blev i weekenden ramt af den forfærdelige nyhed om Chris Anker Sørensens tragiske og alt for tidlige død. Bare dagen efter var Kasper Asgreen to sekunder fra at vinde VM-bronze i enkeltstart. Landstræner Anders Lund og Michael Valgren er med på telefonen hos Peter Piil, Thomas Bay og Jesper Worre, som sammen forsøger at sætte ord på Chris Anker Sørensen som menneske og cykelrytter, og om den brutale situation de danske VM-ryttere står i.

The 88th World Road Race will be held in Flanders and it could be a clash of the titans with Wout van Aert and Mathieu van der Poel with the defending champion Julian Alaphilippe also looking to defend his title from Imola. The Danish squad are led by Kasper Asgreen with several strong cards such as Michael Valgren and Magnus Cort Nielsen.  

A day after recording the latest pod, Michael Valgren went and won Giro della Toscana by more than a minute. Coincidence? Maybe.
