Mira Katherine Sorvino was born in Manhattan. She is the daughter of Lorraine Davis, an actress turned drama therapist, and veteran character actor Paul Sorvino. Her father's family were Italian immigrants. The young Sorvino was intelligent, an avid reader and an exceptional scholar. Her father discouraged her from becoming an actor, as he knew how the industry often chews up young stars. She attended Harvard, majoring in Chinese, graduating magna cum laude in 1989, largely on the strength of her thesis, a Hoopes Prize-winning thesis on racial conflict in China, written and researched during the year spent in Beijing, which helped her fluency in Mandarin Chinese. However, she showed interest in a career in acting from an early age, and moved to New York City to try her hand in the City's film industry, waitressing, auditioning and working at the Tribeca production company of Robert De Niro. She succeeded in getting a little television work in the early 1990s, but got her first film job in the independent gangster movie Amongst Friends (1993), on which she worked her way up the ladder behind the camera to eventually associate-produce the film, and, more importantly, was eventually cast as the female lead. The indie production was well-received, and Sorvino's performance attracted enough buzz to get her cast in two more movies, one a more prominent indie, Barcelona (1994), the other her first Hollywood feature, Quiz Show(1994), and her skillful performances brought her yet more attention. An exceptionally poised and articulate young woman, she may have seemed inappropriate to play a crazy hooker, but Woody Allen took the chance, and her magnificent performance as the female lead in his Mighty Aphrodite (1995) proved her range as a performer and earned her an Oscar (at the tender age of 29) for Best Supporting Actress. Since winning the Oscar, Sorvino has continued to take a wide range of roles, including another stretch as Marilyn Monroe in Norma Jean & Marilyn (1996), co-starring with another very intelligent and skilled young actress, Ashley Judd. Forays into action and horror, such as Mimic (1997) and The Replacement Killers (1998) show that Sorvino is not above being playful in the film roles she chooses. However, what forever cemented her role in popular culture was her performance as charmingly silly California beach girl Romy White in Romy and Michele's High School Reunion (1997), in which she and co-star Lisa Kudrow utter one hilarious absurdity after another. She is most recently featured in Ryan Murphy's Hollywood on Netflix.

As a precursor to Women in Horror Month (February), my wife was kind enough to guest host an episode of the show. In this episode, we discuss Mimic, the sophomore effort of director, Guillermo Del Toro (Hellboy, Pan's Labyrinth, Pacific Rim), starring Mira Sorvina (guys, did you know the lady from Romy and Michele's High School Reunion won a friggin' Academy Award?). The film features an ensemble cast including a pre-Thanos Josh Brolin, a pre-The Walking Dead Norman Reedus, and Doug Jones (Hellboy, The Shape of Water, Hocus Pocus). Charles S. Dutton (Alien 3, Legion, Gothika) is great as ever in this film, as Leonard. Giancarlo Giannini (Hannibal, Darkness, Dracula) plays Manny, the grandfather of Chuy. Until researching the film, Jake had no idea that it was based on a short-story, so guess what! He reviews that too! The writer of the screenplay, Matthew Robbins, went on to write Crimson Peak. That being said, he already had some serious writing credits having done Dragonslayer and *batteries not included. The film eventually had two sequels: Mimic 2 and Mimic 3: Sentinel. Lucky for you, we don't go into those installments-- for now! Let us know if you want us to review those films or any others in the future by reaching out to us at slasherspod@gmail.com. In the latest episode of Film Stories with Simon Brew, Simon examines two very different 1990s projects. Hudson Hawk is, to date, the only film that Bruce Willis has a screenwriting credit on. And a year before, as Die Hard 2 premiered, its producer boasted that Hudson Hawk would be even bigger. But things soon went off track. Meanwhile, in the aftermath of Wayne's World, Disney backed Romy & Michele's High School Reunion, but soon had second thoughts... Stories of both are discussed in this episode... Humans are prone to mistakes, but as Bob Ross says, "There are no mistakes, just happy accidents!" Well, unless you count some of the biggest mistakes in history, which we talk about. But we also talk about why making mistakes is actually a good thing, plus we throw in some of our many bloopers you've never heard before. And, thanks to special guests Paul and Wayne from The Countdown: Movies and TV Reviews podcast for giving us the top mistakes made in movies! This episode's wine: 90+ Cellars Big Red Blend, Lot 113 from California, 2014 This episode's cheese: Goat Cheese: Plain, Herb and 4-Pepper Find us at classylittlepodcast.com | Twitter | Facebook We start our show off with a special segment from our #PodernFamily friends Paul and Wayne from The Countdown: Movies and TV Reviews podcast giving us a list of the biggest mistakes in movies. And, if you're into talking about movies and television, old and new, and sexy Australian accents, these are the guys to listen to, so check them out! You can also follow them on Twitter.) James talks about some great inventions that were created accidentally. Alexander Fleming, thanks for seeing that mold in a petri dish and deciding not to throw it out or put it in the fridge for someone else to worry about. Emily also points out a mistake made in "Romy and Michele's High School Reunion" about the origins of Post-Its. Ever wonder just what erasers are and how they work? Emily goes through the history of these fantastic life-savers, including the fun fact that having them on top of pencils is common in America, as opposed to Europe where they never make any mistakes. (We'll confirm with Rick and Paul from Rick and Paul Heal the World about that one.) Find out the origin or correction fluid and Control-Z, as well! And, Emily predicts the future, in a way, but here's the story she refers to she never ended up telling James after the show. James gives us some of the biggest blunders made in history, some of which led to events that have changed the world as we know it. Despite this, we discuss how mistakes are actually necessary tools for humans to learn and grow from. Featured Promos The Countdown: Movies and TV Reviews Epic Film Guys Emily was recently on Laura McClellan's podcast, The Productive Woman, talking about Productivity & ADHD, and it was a lot of fun. Check it out! James and Emily were featured on a recent episode of Faces and Aces: Las Vegas with a mini-segment called, "Cheers to Chinese New Year"! What could be more Irish than a Jew and an Italian taking a road trip to Tuscon? Welcome to the world of ROMY & MICHELE, where nothing quite makes sense - apart from the enduring friendship between two blonde losers (Lisa Kudrow and Mira Sorvino) who redefine success. And we stage a reunion of our own as special guest (and Seán's oldest friend) Alan Flanagan not only to dissect the film, wax philosophical and reminisce about the Emerald Isle. Packed with more memories than a fridge lined with Post-Its, this is one episode sure to warm your heart. Happy St Patrick's Day! And if anybody needs to make a call... we've got a phone! Hello and welcome to the very first episode of A Force to Remember! Each week for the next six weeks, your venerable host, I, Karl Castaneda, will discuss each of the six Star Wars films with my girlfriend, Shannon. You see, Shannon's never seen any of the Star Wars films, and has agreed to indulge me in this on one condition: I also have to see one of her favorite films from her childhood/teenage years, all culminating in me seeing her favorite film of all time - An Affair to Remember. So this week we're covering Episode I: The Phantom Menace (yup, we're going in THAT order) and Shannon's pick - Romy and Michele's High School Reunion. How will a childlike Anakin compare to Lisa Kudrow accepting an award on-stage with only a bra on? You'll have to listen in to find out! Want some of your listener mail to be read on-air for Episode 6? Send it over via email (crosstawk@gmail.com), Twitter (@crosstawk) or in the comments section on the website. Thanks for listening, and we'll see you next week!
Mira Sorvino is on The Nerdist podcast! She and Chris talk about being a true nerd in high school, coming up with the character of Romy in Romy and Michele's High School Reunion, her time living in China and her new show Intruders on BBC America.
