CW: Mention of abuse, sexual abuse, physical abuse, incest, molestation  At 24 years old, in the early 90's, Michelle Lopez was riding a train in New York with her newborn baby and saw an advertisement that spoke to her. It said, “If you're a woman and you're enduring substance abuse, homelessness, or battery, call this number.” Michelle picked up a phone and began her new life. Her and her daughter were diagnosed with HIV, and it was her mission to get clean, understand her own trauma, and help others with similar stories.  Michelle, a bisexual Caribbean woman, realized that women living with HIV continue to be ostracized for both wanting and having sex. Michelle knew she had to combat this and teach herself and others about self-love, pleasure, and intimacy.  She has spent her career advocating for HIV prevention and treatment, women's health, mental health, sexuality, and how to unlearn feelings of shame. She says, “I recognized getting clean would give me more power to fight against situations and circumstances and stand up for my rights. I had to learn what it is to love Michelle and deal with the trauma that I endured.” Michelle shares how she utilizes her experiences from childhood to the present to educate others through clinical work, research, and advocacy. Her story is one of empowerment, celebration, and making lemonade with the lemons she was given.  Download the transcript of this episode. If there is one thing this anonymous writer can take away from the comments left on this very platform, not to mention our Meet the Investor series, it's that Livewire's readers seriously know what they are talking about. Many of you have been investing for years, if not decades - and a large majority of you have done it all on your own (without the help of a financial services professional). Given that reporting season is now behind us, as well as the volatility that we have seen in markets of late, we thought it would be wise to ask Livewire readers which stocks they would like to see covered on Buy Hold Sell. So in this episode, Centennial Asset Management's Matthew Kidman was joined by abrdn's Michelle Lopez and First Sentier's David Wilson for their analysis of five of your top stocks. Meet Michelle Lopez whose love for jiujitsu is evident as she sees it as a gift that she could give her kids, other women and offer empowerment. Today she finds herself managing a gym where her son instructs and she is a brown belt herself. She came in the early days and we talk about the level of commitment that it takes to lead the life she has chosen. Michelle is proud of the fact that she can participate in activities as she chooses, but she admits that there are days you just cry in the shower. We talk about her reset, which comes from nature and hiking and how she works to stay on the mat. Her life revolves around the gym and we talk about how you avoid burnout, but being surrounded by the passion that makes it a thrill. Michelle shares her career, her gym life and the hurdles that she faces. She pushes for more as a woman and to figure out her own individual goals. Personal growth, business growth and family growth are all pieces to her puzzle. When we talk about her sport of jiujitsu … she goes for a shoulder crunch and into an arm bar as her game move—the energy she brings into the gym is to bring in good energy and realize that it's body dependent of how you feel and what is physically happening. We talk about how to stay in the game—picking who and how you roll. We chat about her life and the directions she took as a young parent and how she figured out some of the aspects to get where she has landed. There is vulnerability here that you will appreciate as she shares aspects that might help you if you feel like you are drowning often by putting family first. “Everyday is trying in our relationships with a spouse and raising kids —and if you can remember that you're on the same team, it helps. You've got to have self confidence, but if your chosen person can build you up by reminding you that they chose you then you're ahead of the game. Your kids see a united front and they follow.” We talk about women defense using jujitsu and Michelle got certified under Dawna Gonzales, Women's Self Defense Coach from 10th Planet San Diego to help women be confident and to advocate for themselves. Being in a family driven community makes this important. She's driven to bring that energy and fire to build women's confidence and awareness. This process was empowering for Michelle and she talks about the strength and bond that happens as Dawna speaks to your soul. Tune in to hear Michelle's method for learning of touching and doing and being in the mix of it to learn both on and off the mat. How lucky she feels to be doing what she is doing every single day. We did it. We survived reporting season. And what a season it was. Value stocks far outperformed growth, as the reality of rising rates became very real. Meantime, financials lifted on these very same fears, while commodity-related miners also soared, pushed higher by the Russian invasion of Ukrainian.  But on an idiosyncratic level, there were a number of surprises that delivered on the upside. Think Treasury Wines, which somehow redistributed its fine bottles of plonk despite losing business in China, or wealth platform HUB24, which managed to shoot the lights out when its competitors disappointed. And who can forget new market entrant Endeavour Group (and a recent Woolworths demerger), which was bid up more than 10% following its surprisingly smashing result. In this episode, Centennial Asset Management's Matthew Kidman was joined by abrdn's Michelle Lopez and Firetrail Investments' Blake Henricks for their thoughts on these three high-quality results.  Plus, for good measure, we also asked them to name one stock that massively disappointed this February reporting season. As Kurt Vonnegut once wrote, "peculiar travel suggestions are dancing lessons from God.” I don't know quite what he meant either, but what I do know is that, peculiar or not, the market seems ready to believe we're all in a much better place to consider travel and all that comes it - getting all sparkly for some fine wining and dining, for example - than it has for some time. After all, Webjet, Lovisa and Treasury Wine Estates remarkably smashed expectations this reporting season, despite the vigorous headwinds COVID hurled their way. In this episode of Buy Hold Sell, Centennial Asset Management's Matthew Kidman puts these three expectation-smashing stocks on the chopping block, to see if Aberdeen Standard Investments' Michelle Lopez and Monash Investors' Simon Shields are throwing their cash at these stocks as they climb higher. Plus they share one pick that they think has been overlooked by the market.

In the words of Curb Your Enthusiasm and Seinfeld creator Larry David, there is no denying that February's reporting season was Pretty, pretty ... pretty good. Nearly half of the company's that reported their half-yearly results beat analyst expectations, while 61 stocks received upgrades. Cyclical sectors like Mining, Resources, Materials, and Financials were top performers during the month, rising 6.4%, 6.0%, 5.8%, and 3.6%, respectively. However, it wasn't all rosy, with a handful of not-so-impressive reports resulting in cascading share prices and 43 broker downgrades. In this episode of Buy Hold Sell, Centennial Asset Management's Matthew Kidman speaks to Aberdeen Standard Investments' Michelle Lopez and Monash Investors' Simon Shields for their take on the winners and losers of reporting season, and what they are still buying despite both the good and bad news.

Those who invested in tech titans Tesla, Tencent and Microsoft at their listings are no doubt laughing all the way to the bank (a brief stopover, before jumping aboard their 500-foot superyacht in the Maldives to celebrate their success with the world's finest caviar and a case of Cristal). Why? Well, at IPO, Tesla's shares were just US$17, Tencent's shares were HK$3.70, while Microsoft's were just US$21, returning a whopping 4,265%, 18,468% and 1017% respectively since then. But are these companies midway to the stratosphere, or is this the end of the ride? In this episode of Buy Hold Sell, Livewire Markets' Ally Selby spoke to Magellan's Vihari Ross and Montaka's Chris Demasi for their take on these three mega caps, as well as two stocks that they believe will rain returns for investors over the long term. Do you have any questions for our fundies? Next week, Aberdeen Standard's Michelle Lopez and Monash Investors Simon Shields will take you through the highs and lows of reporting season, as well as how they have positioned their portfolios since. Beverly continues her conversation with Michelle Lopez. The conversation starts with the changes in AI (artificial intelligence) in HR specifically. Is HR changing? Yes! AI is now helping to sort resumes. AI provides cost-effective methods to evaluate data, recognize patterns and automate processes. Things all done by people, which will now be done with AI + people. AI and automation aren’t going anywhere which is why Michelle recommends doing your homework so you can be prepared for changes in your industry. Ideas for researching: Search (industry) trends 2021 (example HR trends 2021) Do your research and find what interests you Prepare for what’s coming; be adaptable to changes Develop skills for what’s coming (once you’ve identified areas of interest) There is more uncertainty than normal this year which is impacting HR and the criteria for personnel management decisions. What happens when people don’t want to go back to the office? Michelle also relays how safety concerns impact workplace cultures. HR leaders will need to add these policies for leadership. Communication is key and it’s more of a challenge because we can’t sit down together in person. Looking for an HR career? Michelle explains that her HR journey wasn’t traditional. She worked in the legal part of business and then move into the strategy part of HR. Her advice: find out how to get a seat at the table. C suite executives may not invite HR, but if you bring other business skills with you, it can be a good way to bring value to your employer. HR Specialization Options If you want to get into or stay in HR, one good way to advance is in specialization. Things like training and development,  talent management and compensation management are just a few areas that may provide different opportunities for your long-term. What’s the biggest personnel problem for business today? Michelle explains that companies are struggling to find the candidates they want in a timely manner. Even with a job market that is less competitive finding the right fit, is taking longer than ever. There’s sometimes a disconnect with recruiters understanding the business needs. It is important to understand what’s happening in the industry, not just a list of credentials. Parting Advice If you are looking for work, a recent graduate or in an industry that’s not growing, use this time as an opportunity. Build your skills and your knowledge so you can position yourself to create the career path that works for you.

Many challenges exist for Human Resource Professionals during this pandemic season. Because everyone does not have the necessary video platforms, face to face communication is almost impossible with some people. My guest today is employment attorney Michelle Lopez, who as a Human Resource Consultant specializing in Training and Development deals with this often. Michelle matriculated through University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee with a bachelor’s degree in criminology, and University of Wisconsin – Madison, with her JD. She has practiced employment law in media, sports, and entertainment industries where she developed an innovative approach to multifaceted workplace challenges.  She has also appeared as an on-air legal analyst for several high-profile television shows. Because of COVID and many people working remotely, many are no longer working a regular 9-5 workday, nor are they confined to residing in a certain geographical area. Certain industries are gong to be remotely for the foreseeable future, and this people the opportunity to hold these jobs in places such as NYC but live in areas where they will have a much better quality of life. Also, by being able to work remotely, people are not necessarily looking for jobs based upon income. Michelle pointed out that because of COVID, she has taken a position that offered lesser pay, but has given her the opportunity to learn and strengthen skills that she would not have had otherwise. As a Human Resource Consultant, Michelle has had the opportunity to work for companies from NYC to California. One thing that she pointed out is that regardless to where you live, most people are more alike than different. Every employee basically wants the same thing.  They are looking for promotion opportunities, rewarding relationships with management, to feel fully supported, and to be able to believe in the company.

"The secret to my survival is that I want to live," says HIV/AIDS advocate, mother and long-term HIV survivor Michelle Lopez. Back in 1991, Michelle left behind a partner who beat her and, she would soon learn, knowingly put her at risk for HIV. With nothing but her infant daughter, Michelle set out to find help -- and help did come, in the form of a subway ad for community health services. She sought out the agency, got her HIV diagnosis (and her daughter's) and got right into care and services. For the past 17 years she's been on staff at that very same agency, helping immigrants and women facing similar challenges to the ones she once faced. Michelle is a strong voice for her communities in the fight against HIV/AIDS -- and she's raised her daughter, Raven, to be an advocate just like her. "I love Michelle today, and I can teach other people that," Michelle says in this edition of This Positive Life. "We have got to start loving us, no matter what: HIV, gay, black, lesbian, Latino. You know, we are somebody."
