The Art of Casting: Zachary Spiegel on Talent, Inclusivity, and Hard Work EP 99

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 17, 2025 33:32

When you think of the entertainment industry, you might picture the glitz and glamour of Hollywood, red carpets, and award shows. But behind every breakout star and successful production, there are industry professionals like Zachary Spiegel working tirelessly to bring talent to the forefront. Zach is a casting director whose journey from actor to casting professional has been filled with passion, perseverance, and a deep commitment to inclusivity. Recently, Zach joined Beverly Williams for an in-depth conversation about his career, the art of casting, and what it truly takes to succeed in the entertainment business. Zach's love for entertainment started in an unexpected place: Buffy the Vampire Slayer. His journey took him from New York to Los Angeles, with a stop in Italy, where he studied Commedia dell'arte as a college junior. Zach pursued his acting career, spending seven years in New York honing his craft. While most actors dread auditions, Zach found himself enjoying the process. He realized that his true passion lay not in performing but in being on the other side of the table, helping to discover and cultivate talent. That's when he made the shift from acting to casting. Zach feels it's the best of both worlds; he is deeply involved in the creative process but in a way that feels more fulfilling. Zach considers casting an art form that requires empathy, business acumen, and a keen eye for talent. He views his work as a bridge between producers and actors, ensuring that the right talent gets the right opportunities.  His work goes beyond just filling roles. It's about creating opportunities for members of historically excluded and marginalized communities. Zach is passionate about making sure every actor has equal access to auditions, advocating for inclusive and accessible casting calls. He explained one of the ways he does that is by using intentional language in casting notices. The way a role is described can either invite or discourage certain actors from applying. By being intentional with wording, Zach ensures that actors of all backgrounds feel welcome to audition. Many people dream of breaking into entertainment, lured by fame and fortune. But as Zach and Beverly discussed, success in the industry isn't about talent alone—it's about perseverance and hard work. “The most talented people don't always reap the benefits,” Zach shared. “Because the most talented people don't always have the ambition or desire to do it.” Ambition, networking, and resilience are just as important as raw skill. And networking isn't just about meeting people, it's about staying in touch and building relationships and ways to create mutual value. Beverly added her own perspective on this, emphasizing the power of genuine connections. Whether through a simple email, a thoughtful card, or a quick message, nurturing relationships can open doors in ways you never expect. Zach's career, much like the entertainment industry itself, is ever-evolving. Casting professionals often find themselves between projects, but rather than waiting for opportunities to come to him, Zach takes an active approach. He reads scripts and tracks up-and-coming actors as well as staying engaged with industry trends. As the conversation wrapped up, Beverly asked Zach what advice he would give to those looking to break into entertainment. His response? “Don't leave, don't die.” It's a humorous yet profound take on the industry—one that speaks to the resilience required to stay in the game. For anyone considering a career in entertainment, Zach's story is a testament to the power of adaptability, persistence, and passion. The path may not always be straightforward, but for those willing to put in the work, the rewards can be life changing. Leaving a review of this podcast is encouraged and greatly appreciated. Building Resilience and Achieving Financial Freedom with Dr. Robert Ramirez EP 97

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 28, 2024 40:15

On today's podcast, I had the privilege of speaking with Dr. Robert Ramirez, a professor, investment and business expert, and someone who transformed personal and financial hardship into an inspiring success story. Dr. Ramirez faced a turning point after the 2008 financial crisis when he nearly lost everything. Instead of letting it defeat him, he found a way to rebuild, and now he helps others achieve financial freedom. I first encountered Dr. Ramirez on a webinar and was immediately struck by his story. It reminded me of the struggles I witnessed in 2008, and I knew his message would resonate with many of you. His experiences are not just about overcoming financial hardship, but about adapting, growing, and turning challenges into opportunities. In our conversation, Dr. Ramirez shared valuable insights into rebuilding after financial disaster. He emphasized the importance of having a positive mindset, adding value to everything you do, and building multiple income streams. He talks about how he had to learn new skills to make himself marketable again after losing his job as a director of IT in 2008. Instead of relying on one source of income, he found ways to diversify and build passive income, which has now become one of his key strategies for achieving financial freedom. Here are some of the key takeaways from our conversation: The Power of a Positive Mindset Dr. Ramirez emphasized the importance of staying positive, even in tough situations. He shared how his positive outlook helped him move forward after losing his job and home, focusing on how things could improve rather than being consumed by his losses.   "It all comes in with one, having a positive mindset—knowing that things will get better, that the cup is half full and not half empty." Investing in Yourself and Adding Value   One of the most powerful lessons Dr. Ramirez shared was the need to continuously add value—not just in your work but in every interaction and relationship. He spoke about the importance of learning new skills to stay relevant, something he had to do when he found himself out of work and needed to update his technical skills.   “I had to rebuild my skills... we have so many tools available to learn skills, and we can teach ourselves these skills.” Building Financial Resilience After his experience in 2008, Dr. Ramirez vowed never to rely on just one income stream again. He explained how building multiple sources of income, including passive income streams, helped him regain his financial footing. His current work focuses on helping others do the same by teaching them about financial intelligence, debt management, and investment strategies. Dr. Ramirez's story is a testament to the power of resilience and adaptability. He now teaches these lessons in his book Achieving Financial Freedom, here he outlines steps to build wealth through passive income and financial intelligence. He's also working on a new book about the retirement crisis, highlighting the importance of financial preparedness for the long haul. If you're someone who has experienced financial difficulties or is looking to diversify your income, this episode is full of actionable advice and motivation. Dr. Ramirez's story reminds us that setbacks are part of life, but it's how we respond to them that defines our future success. I encourage you to tune in to the full episode to hear Dr. Ramirez's inspiring story and learn how you too can start building financial freedom today! Learn more about your ad choices. Voting in America EP 96

I'm an educated, professional woman who also considers herself well informed. It pains me to admit however that upon reconsideration, I am not as well-informed as I thought. Until recently, I believed that voting is a right, indeed a fundamental right. I'm embarrassed to admit I was wrong.  As an American and an attorney, I am aware that at one time only white men were entitled to vote.  In the 21st century, admittedly in my ignorance, and because we live in a democracy I believed that all Americans have the right to vote.  I violated one of my cardinal rules, take nothing for granted. I took it for granted that people of color, women, and individuals who are 18 years old, all of whom do not have non-discriminatory legal grounds for withholding their voting privilege, would be entitled to vote.   I knew about gerrymandering and redistricting, and enacting legislation and rules that imposed limitations on things like giving someone water while they were in line to vote.  Silly me, I believed that unreasonable or discriminatory limitations would be struck down by courts. Unfortunately, the integrity of jurists and our courts at all levels have been tainted by the appearance of impropriety and bias. A 2019 article by the Carnegie Corporation of New York notes that “[c]hallenges to voting rights in this country, like the ones we've seen recently, are hardly a 21st century invention. Entrenched groups have long tried to keep the vote out of the hands of the less powerful.  That's it! It's about power.  We all have it. If voting is important, and each individual's vote is particularly important, why is gerrymandering and redistricting be a “thing?” Why are there efforts to suppress voting?   In a few short weeks, on November 5, 2024, Americans will have the privilege, if not the right to cast their ballot for the candidates of their choice, including President of the United States. Take the time to learn which candidates advocate policies that will serve you.  Do you want to raise a family or start a business? Do you have healthcare coverage now? Is there a chance that it will go away? Do you have benefits that were bargained for by a union? Do you live in a state that may need federal assistance if there is a disaster? A hurricane, fire or other natural disaster. Don't listen to the uninformed. Go to reliable websites that set forth each candidate's position, then vote your interest.    I interviewed my long-time friend Wade Henderson, former CEO and President of the Leadership Conference of Civil and Human Rights. Please treat yourself and listen to that podcast. His interview, Understanding the Civil Rights Movement” was posted on September 28, 2020, and is available on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and my website, Your Employment Matters. As a young man, Wade experienced an act of discrimination that solidified his commitment and mindset and directed his path forward. Others may have become embittered and checked out by not voting or otherwise not disengaging. By comparison, Wade devoted his life's work in service to promoting civil rights and human rights.  Please take a page from Wade Henderson's playbook. If life gives you lemons, use those lemons to make lemonade or another beverage, meal or dessert of your choice. Take the bitterness out of life and move forward with purpose.    Never take anything, especially hard-fought rights or privileges, for granted. You only have them until someone takes them away from you. Be vigilant. Remain informed, usually by accessing reliable sources. If you're unsure, view several different media outlets that offer different views and accounts.  Remember that facts should be accurate. Interpretation of facts is opinion.  In the words of former Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan (Dem.NY)— 'You are entitled to your opinion. But you are not entitled to your own facts. This episode of Your Employment Matters tackles two important topics in employment: finding the right job and building the right team, and how one's role and co-workers have a significant impact on work experience. Today's guest, Betty Thorne Tierney, is Vice President and the Associate General Counsel for a large retail chain in the Southern US. She spent the last 31 years in retail, actively litigating all types of cases nationwide as first chair. Since 2012, she's led an in-house trial team of attorneys, paralegals, and admins. “It's not always easy to recognize an opportunity if it's something that you didn't envision for yourself.” - Beverly Williams Betty never envisioned herself in management, leading an in-house litigation team. But when the opportunity came, she took the time to decide, had conversations with her spouse, her boss, and took a chance. This turned out to be the best decision for her career. In this role, she learned how to manage different roles, different personalities, and work in different settings to do the best work—as a team—for the company. Key topics discussed in this episode include: Recognizing and assessing opportunities Characteristics considered in the hiring process Representing yourself and your company well “When looking for a new job, make sure you research, know what's expected, and see it meets your goals and abilities. That is the best thing you can do for yourself.” - Betty Thorne Tierney Beverly and Betty also talked about the right fit between the employee, the job, the company, and the team. Before anyone takes on a role, they need to make sure that the values, nature of work, and all other job details align with their goals. This isn't just for the benefit of the company, but also for the employee. It helps make sure that when they start working, they won't feel burdened, misunderstood, or even underperform. It's the job of the leader to develop the team. However, it's the employee's responsibility to develop skills and character and provide value to the company.  Connect with Betty Thorne Tierney: Facebook LinkedIn Leaving a review of this podcast is encouraged and greatly appreciated.  Check out Beverly Williams book: Your GPS to Employment Success  Learn more about your ad choices. Why Unions are Still Needed in Today's Workplace EP 92

In this episode of Your Employment Matters, we continue the series on labor management. This topic is much needed after the years of decline in union membership, the changes in the workplace after the pandemic, and the great resignation. There is now a cautious optimism about a resurgence of unionism. Our guest today is Stuart Davidson, Esq. He's currently a partner at Willig, Williams & Davidson where he represents public and private benefit funds, fighting to preserve the ability of workers to retire with dignity and have access to affordable health care. His work for unions includes leading contract negotiations, presenting interest and grievance arbitrations and advising on external and internal union matters. “It takes a monumental effort to successfully organize workers.” - Stuart Davidson While Stuart was in college, he was challenged by his great uncle to get to know and work with the working-class people of America, so he worked as a Union Organizer in North Carolina in the 1970s. Besides the social and economic aspects inhibiting union organization, he saw that lawyers dominated the field and denied workers the opportunity to build a better future. From there, he decided to attend law school and become a union lawyer. He's been representing unions and workers for 42 years. Key topics discussed: The duality of sides of workers and management The effects of the change from a defined benefit plan (earned pension) to a defined contribution plan (401k's) The rise in Union memberships, especially among the young workers The changes in the workplace over the decades, especially in the relationship between workers and management “I believe that labor is a failed process.” - Stuart Davidson The workplace and labor laws need to change so that employees will get paid fairly, get the benefits they deserve, and have a healthy working environment. This conversation between Beverly and Stuart has conflicting perspectives, new insights, and much-needed knowledge for anyone who wants to know the benefits of being a part of a union. In this episode of Your Employment Matters, Beverly Williams welcomes a very special guest, Mr. Richard Hooker Jr., a union leader, and officer. Together, they discuss the importance of collaborative negotiation in employment disputes, particularly in today's post-COVID world.  As the Principal Officer of Teamsters Local 623, Richard is responsible for its 4,500 members. He makes sure that they receive protection, fair pay and good work conditions. His goals are to change the mindset of management and employees and to bring dignity and respect back in the workplace. “We just went through one of the most difficult times of our history, and America had to depend on its workers to make it through.” - Richard Hooker Jr. Some of the issues in today's workplace discussed are: Union leaderships The Great Resignation led to people losing jobs without a backup Contentious strikes and dragged-out negotiations During the pandemic, the world realized how vital laborers are to keeping society running, and how they deserve fair contracts and compensation. When employees don't have a highly specialized or in-demand skill, they aren't in a position to make demands or have job security, because they can be easily replaced. This is why Richard is advocating for Unions, so workers can have the protection they need. The employer-employee relationship is still a relationship. Both sides have their expectations, needs, and non-negotiables. There has to be a balance, a way to reach win-win situations without great losses. This episode explores why this balance is necessary, yet tricky to reach. Prepare to be moved and inspired in this episode of Your Employment Matters. Christine Macdonald, the author of "Face Value: From Working the Pole to Baring My Soul." brings a story of triumph over adversity that will leave you motivated and empowered.  Christine's life journey has been marked by trials—childhood skin deformity, surgeries, abuse, addiction, and mental illness. Yet, she emerged as a warrior, turning her pain into purpose and advocating for those struggling with self-esteem and adversity. Her story stands as a beacon of hope, proving that obstacles can be conquered and transformed into personal growth. She's a living testament to the power of resilience and the human spirit.  Amidst her challenges, Christine found her way to a career in sales, where her remarkable ability to connect with people and gauge a room propelled her to success. Her journey is a testament to the remarkable strength that lies within each of us, waiting to be harnessed.  Here are the three lessons Christine shares that will help anyone in any aspect of life:  Know yourself, your blind spots and your strengths.  Know your lane and focus on excelling at it.  Share your story.    “You may have the cinderblocks pulling you under of the person that you once were, but that's not who you are now. So, try to look at it from the lens of evolution rather than have your behaviors hold you back.” - Christine Macdonald  More than anything, Christine's message resonates with hope—a reminder that improvement is always possible, and the past need not shackle us. One of these individuals is our guest for today, Paul Teasdale.  For over 20 years, Paul has helped businesses to drive performance, most recently with the McLaren racing team. Through coaching and facilitation support, he helps clients take the approaches and ways of working that deliver elite-level Motorsport performance, and apply them to their own world through facilitation, speaking, and consulting.   Paul has studied engineering, yet he describes himself as the world's worst technical engineer. Instead, his interest lies in the practical application of the methodologies of engineering, looking at a certain system or process, and figuring out how else it can be improved.  “We all have transferrable skills. A lot of people just don't realize it enough.” - Paul Teasdale  Throughout Paul's professional years, he has learned lots of lessons. Here are three that he shared in this episode:  We all have transferrable skills, and these are what will bring us through all the professional changes we will go through.  Put in the effort to improve yourself and your professional performance.  Learn to identify the data and elements you need that will allow you to make the best decisions.    “How can you adapt what has been learned and then adapt it for your own performance?” - Paul Teasdale  Paul says that any job position should be beneficial for both employee and employer. There are some people you meet, and you start having a conversation with, start sharing pieces of your life with, and you instantly connect and feel like you can keep the conversation going on for days. That is exactly what happened in this podcast episode.  Today, I had the pleasure of conversing with Jen Hardy, a proud wife of a veteran, and homeschooling mom of 7. She is also the Podcast Host of Fabulous Over 50, an Author, Speaker, and Community Builder. Every day, she lives out her name Hardy, which means “robust, strong, and capable of enduring difficult conditions.”  “Whatever you're going to do for your job, take pride in your work.” - Jen Hardy  For years, Jen struggled with her health, going in and out of the hospital, multiple medications, and various diagnoses. Eventually, doctors told her that there was no longer anything they could do for her, only to make her as comfortable as possible. Not exactly the shining words you want to hear from professionals responsible for your health, but Jen accepted them and thought only of her family. Well, guess what? Jen is still here, she's still fighting, and she has discovered the mission to help as many women as possible find their inner fabulousness, and transition into the life of their dreams.  Among many topics, Jen and I talked about life, work, missed flights, and our shared dislike for cleaning, and here are some insights you can take to heart: You can do anything you want, but you need to find something and be good at it. No matter what work you do, take ownership and take pride over it. It is important to have the right people in your life who are willing to tell you the truth when you need it, and who would help you see situations outside of yourself.   “If you don't use your mind, you will lose your mind.” - Beverly  So listen in to this episode, take what you can out of the stories we shared and lessons we learned, and hopefully, you get to apply it in your life as well  Connect with Jen Hardy: Website Facebook Instagram LinkedIn Learn more about your ad choices. There are some people who just seem to radiate love and light, and that's the perfect way to describe our guest for today.  Kim Sorrelle is a writer, speaker, entrepreneur, activist, and author. Her entrepreneurial journey included commercial real estate, a golf course, event facilities, catering, a grocery store, and more. Besides building businesses into multi-million-dollar companies, Kim is proud to have weathered the pandemic storm in the food industry, pivoting, keeping staff employed, and seeing the company's sales grow beyond pre-pandemic numbers. Kim is also the director of Rays of Hope International, a partnering organization working with people who have a passion, a vision, and a mission to help people in their own country and just need someone to walk alongside.  “Whatever you're passionate about and gifted in, put it to use to help people.” - Kim Sorrelle  Here are three life lessons we can take away from Kim's experiences:  Develop discipline and good habits now. They're necessary for your success.  Always practice gratitude and choose love.  Let what you're passionate about be your gift to the world.    Kim has had a lot of success in her life, but she's also experienced great loss and went on her own journey to discover love. It's amazing how someone who's had as much success as she's had, and experienced as much as she has, can still be so humble and inviting. Best Practices to Improve Your Career and Get the Job You Want EP 79

Let me ask you. Are you at the place where you're unsure about your career? Maybe you're undecided? You probably have an idea of what you want. Or you might have no idea at all. How do you decide your path? How do you set goals?   Today's guest, Claudia Miller, is going to help us answer those questions. Claudia is a career coach for women in tech. She helps her clients land jobs in 90 days (or less!) that have around a 50% salary increase. She has a vast background from architecture, management, health, technology, finance, to education and marketing, which she now uses to help her clients.  Claudia learned what she knows now out of necessity. Being the first one in her family to even finish eighth grade, she knew she couldn't rely on her family to teach her what she needed to know to advance in her career. She got great grades, was on honor roll, and earned scholarships. Even in high school, she joined internships, networked, looked for mentors, and did everything she thought she had to do. She believed that if she did all these right things, the interviews, and job offers would come after college. But what exactly happened? She had one interview and one job offer.   That experience led Claudia to re-evaluate everything she thought she knew about the professional marketplace and she started asking questions. How can I hack this career advancement? How can I increase my salary? How can I get multiple job interviews and offers?    What followed was years of learning, multiple career shifts, salary increase at every job offer, and her helping professionals land their next job and put them higher on their career ladder.  “When we bring two intersections of industries that are not correlated, that's when you become the expert.” - Claudia Miller  Today, Claudia shares many practical tips for leveraging and presenting yourself, networking, learning about the industry, conducting interviews, and even how to secure  yourself in this time of evolving AI.  “Make sure you take care of your mind and your mindset because if you're not feeling confident, it will leak out to the entire job search process.” - Claudia Miller  And in the middle of this recession, layoffs, and job uncertainty, Claudia's advice is to keep a clear mind and not let any of the worries affect this job search.  If you're at this place where you need to decide about your career, remember that you can do whatever you put your mind to do as long as you're willing to put in the work and be persistent.   Connect with Claudia Miller:  Website  Facebook  Instagram  LinkedIn  Leaving a review of this podcast is encouraged and greatly appreciated.  Check out Beverly Williams book: Your GPS to Employment Success  Learn more about your ad choices. She is also the CEO of EPower & Associates, Inc., which provides people development in the form of training, coaching, consulting, and events, and is the parent organization for The EPower Change Institute and The Trauma Informed Academy.  “The only time we welcome change and are excited by it is if we design the change, we execute the change, and it goes exactly as we want it to. Otherwise, we don't like it very much, because it's imposed on us, and we feel like we lose our ability to make choices.” - Elizabeth Powers  Elizabeth's mother has said that Elizabeth has “gone through more change than a chameleon going through a costume ball.” And Elizabeth agrees!  She started out as a shoe repairer at a shop that served celebrities where she started out not believing that she could do anything more. One day, a client came in, saw her, and said, “You are way too smart to be doing this. Don't let yourself get stuck here.” That was the first time she felt seen, and she kept that moment tucked in her heart for a long time. Since then, she has worked in public welfare, had (and lost) other jobs, and had to learn how to deal with the different changes in her life.  Here are the key topics Elizabeth discusses today:  Our mindsets around change  Choosing how we respond to change  Developing our emotional intelligence and that inner connection to our own feelings    “If you can't tolerate the discomfort of learning something new, or of taking in information from other people, you're going to be stuck.” - Elizabeth Powers  Today, Elizabeth spends her time helping people deal with change.      If your job expected you to keep everything organized, fully stocked, clean, and running smoothly from the start of your shift to the end of your shift, you'd probably expect a pretty busy day. When you meet with your boss and they also add that they need other team members managed, conflicts resolved, clean clothes, meals prepared, and everyone's schedule accommodated, you may feel overwhelmed and exhausted quick. Later, when you realize all the work expected is paying $0.00/hour, you may actually walk and say forget it all.  The life of a homemaker involves all of this and more. It's no easy job, and yet many homemakers are taken for granted. Many homemakers are dealing with low self-worth and low self-value when looking to rejoin the workforce. “I'm JUST a homemaker” or “I only stay home with my kids.”  Today's guest, Laura Troy, is the President of the Displaced Homemakers Network of New Jersey. Her commitment to helping women navigate the process of going from unpaid work as homemakers to paid work is a passion that began with a personal experience very close to her.  “The sad thing is we don't put much value on the homemaker, and the child raising part of the family.” -Laura Troy  Helping individuals return to the workforce is a process that requires mental work and preparation, as well as support and encouragement. Laura shares how she's been able help these women boost their confidence and self-worth and see the value they really bring to the table:  Recovering from mental and emotional abuse of feeling undervalued  Career assessments and skill translation from being a homemaker to skilled and valued employee  Providing emotional support to individuals who've lost themselves in years of servitude    It's so easy for women in particular to feel marginalized when going through life changing events like divorce, separation, a disabled spouse or other situations. This perspective has helped Robert pivot from his earlier career in the entertainment industry to become a partner at Seyfarth Shaw overseeing Labor & Employment.  “The biggest problem with networking is the fact that it sounds so scary, and the fact that people make it out to be a lot more than that is interesting” -Robert T. As the workplace evolves and takes on different shapes as people relocate to working from home environments, and as politics continue to find its way into nearly every corporation, ethics is more important than ever before.  Employers have their code of ethics, and many professions have a standard code of ethics that people should be familiar with to keep out of trouble. Beverly thinks of ethics as referring to standards of what's right and wrong. It's important to know your company's' ethics so that you stay in compliance.  Debbie Peterson has experienced multiple careers intensely focused and anchored to ethics. As the first and only female elected mayor of Grover Beach, California and a real estate broker with Peterson Team Realty, Debbie shares the basic rules that have helped her navigate a corrupted political system.  “I want to show people how to be vigilant.” - Debbie Peterson  Some key topics Debbie exposes about ethics:  What to do if you're ever in doubt if something is ethical  Why word choice is key to calling out unethical behavior  What guard rails for proper business conduct includes  How to address ethical concerns without jumping to whistleblower  Debbie literally wrote a book exposing the corruption that she uncovered in her political office. She and Beverly share two noteworthy rules of thumb:  If in doubt, just don't  If it doesn't pass the smell test, there's a problem  As you observe your current work environment or explore new opportunities, putting company ethics onto your radar may save you from unnecessary trouble and involvement. Not knowing your company's ethical standards isn't an excuse for not speaking up and allowing things to continue.  Debbie Peterson's upcoming book: The Happiest Corruption: Sleaze, Lies, and Suicide in a California Beach Town.  Connect with Debbie Peterson:  Linkedin    Leaving a review of this podcast is encouraged and greatly appreciated.  Check out Beverly Williams book: Your GPS to Employment Success Learn more about your ad choices. In your personal life, being ethical may not be a conscious thought or an idea you have to think about too hard. You know right from wrong and as a good citizen, you abide by the rules of the society we live in. In the workplace, however, ethics may sound like a different conversation and isn't always black or white.  In a 2015 survey, it was stated that 84% of upper and mid-level management polled considered their staff to be inconsiderate and rude, while 65% believed their staff lacked a moral compass. The question becomes, is this an ethical issue or a problem with etiquette. Furthermore, is this the kind of work environment you currently work in, or would you choose to move into a work environment like this?  In this episode, Beverly is pointing out the hotspots you need to be aware of around ethics and etiquette. More importantly, this episode can serve as a guide and compass for you in your employment journey as you navigate murky waters with your current employer, or do your research for an employment opportunity you are considering in the future.  “It's up to you to do the work necessary to determine whether or not the employers that you're considering seeking employment from are reputable people of integrity, so you don't have any ethical, unethical experiences.” Beverly Williams  Key points covered:  Actions don't have to be illegal to be unethical  Red flags may include communication, wages, and hours   What to do if you suspect unethical activity in the workplace  Old fashion manners and decent behavior is still “in”  Etiquette applies to text, emails, and verbal communication    When it comes to being ethical and demonstrating proper etiquette, the important thing to remember is to always put your best foot forward, and conduct yourself honestly and with integrity. The Great Resignation has been receiving a lot of attention from the media over the past few months. Employers are scrambling and creating new incentives and packages to retain quality employees. Yet there are still employees who are on the fence and considering what their next move should be. Should they join the rest and leave their employer, or stay and make the best of the situation? Mitch Case's journey from employee to entrepreneur may hold the key to what some of you may need to hear. Mitch transitioned from full-time mechanical engineer to entrepreneur, but it was not a brash decision. Initially, his company, More Than a Meal, was in the passion hobby. “I decided to walk away from my engineering career, and go full time into our business “More Than a Meal” to say that I can look back in 20 years and say, ‘even if I fall flat on my face, [...] I went into something that I believed in', and I had the right things in place” -Mitch Case Mitch started a personal growth journey and began to sort through and recognize what he valued, what brought him joy, filled him with purpose, and gave him meaning. Mitch's 3 tips for anyone transitioning to entrepreneurship: Don't allow money to be your motivator Have a plan in place for how you will transition and grow Talk to as many people as you can who have already transitioned   More Than a Meal started from a pain point Mitch and his wife experienced after the birth of their first child. That was the starting point of finding something that held much more value for Mitch than the monotony of his full-time engineering career. “There's no better way to show appreciation than meeting somebody where they are at.” -Mitch Case One of the biggest takeaways from this conversation is seeing first-hand what can be created when your passions begin to align with your values in a way that serves others. Not only to your employment and career but you'll use these in other areas of your life as well.   Dr. David Bernstein, a 40-year retired primary care geriatric physician, has authored a few books, one of which he brings to the discussion today, Power of 5, The Ultimate Formula for Longevity and Remaining Youthful.  Highlighted Topics Covered:  Why diet and exercise matter for employment  Being resilient about your diet and exercise  Doing everything with clear intention  Managing stress (the villain in your story)  Leading by example for better connections    “It doesn't matter what age you are, whether you're young or old, maintaining the fitness in all the different areas leads to success [...] we need to maintain our resilience and our fitness to be successful.” -Dr. David Bernstein  Both Beverly and Dr. Bernstein agree that diet and exercise are necessary for optimal health and productivity. When it comes to seeking employment and stress in the job, how often has your default move or thought been to lean into your diet and exercise habits?  Dr. Bernstein shares that he got into practicing medicine after seeing the impact poor health had on his grandparents and the stress it caused his mother in addition to the physical ailments. He promotes a better lifestyle and wellness as a way of approaching a positive and uplifting life.  Some of the core anchors are being intentional and handling stress more effectively. Beverly shares how “we have to be intentional about how we go about putting ourselves in the best possible position to achieve the positive results that we want.”  Tackling your diet choices and exercise habits and looking for motivation doesn't just happen by chance. Beverly reminds us that doing things with intention is self-motivating. Motivation alone without intention can easily leave you wandering, lost, and not making the best choices for your health.  Anyone in the job market looking for work also knows too well, the amount of stress that seeking employment and changing careers can cause. Dr. Bernstein shares the value and importance of nurturing connections and social networks.   Sometimes part of the stress is that you may not be having the right conversations with the right people. Being intentional about how you maintain personal and business relationships matters for your employment and it matters for your success.  “It's incredibly important to have your social network together to maintain your life and your health.” -Dr. David Bernstein  There is a strong link between your stress, your diet, exercise, and how it affects you in your work environment and home environment. It led her to inspire others to deal with life loss and grief with grace. Before starting her career as a grief and loss coach, Kathleen had a successful career in sales, the only woman on her sales team.   She is indeed a trailblazer. She experienced setbacks one after another. While dealing with grief, Kathleen learned to use her talents and rely on her faith to build a new life.   In 2012, Kathleen became certified as a grief and loss coach. She also contributed to one of Amazon's bestselling books, The Lemonade Stand 2, which is about various stories of life struggle (lemons) and getting through them (making lemonade).   Currently Kathleen runs her business, Hope Renewed LLC. She's just completed the 12-week course on grief and its stages. Kathleen's career transition was triggered by the series of life events and losses she personally experienced. Beverly noted that Kathleen has been preparing for this all along.  Beverly and Kathleen talk about the transitions that emanate from various forms of losses in life like the death of a marriage, senior living, or downsizing after having an empty nest for couples. With changes comes the the journey to a different mindset focused on today's new reality and circumstances.   When dealing with loss:   Build back by recognizing what you do well.  There are a lot of things you are not in control of especially at work.   You may fail but you are not a failure.   It's okay to rebuild, and try again.   Don't let anyone marginalize you.  Manage expectations and train like an Olympian.   Have another stream of income. .  Have a plan and start making connections.    Hear Beverly's advice about taking a proactive approach in your current job, and always work on your network. Developing communications and presentation skills is just one example of things you can work out, with or without support from your employer.   Kathleen, a former recruiter, has this excellent tip for job hunters:  “Send a federal express letter to human resources, to the person that is in that position. Get the company's annual report. Find out who the key person is in that field that you want to go in (the department) and send them a personal letter with your resume attached and a strong reason why you would be a perfect candidate for the position that is available (that you know about.).”  Focus on giving a good first impression.   Dealing with loss is part of life, but it doesn't have to derail you. Be open to opportunities and be honest about the support you need. It's your personal journey, but you don't have to do it alone.   Get your free 30-minute consultation with Kathleen HERE.
