This edition focuses squarely on the biggest dance and club hits from 2007 to 2008—an era that bridged the raw energy of Electro House with the tail end of the millennium's peak clubbing scene. If you were anywhere near a dancefloor during this time, chances are you'll recognize most—if not all—of the tracks included here. Each one dominated the Billboard Dance Club Songs chart and captured the diverse pulse of the scene. From euphoric anthems to deep, soulful grooves, this was a period where musical experimentation met mainstream success. A Deep Cut That Still Resonates One of the undeniable standouts in this set is The Cure & The Cause by Fish Go Deep featuring Tracey K. While the original release had multiple remixes, it was DJ Meme's version that truly left its mark. Known for channeling the Salsoul era with real string sections and deep, disco-rooted energy, Meme's remix paid tribute to the late ‘70s underground—offering something completely unique in a sea of Electro House and Big Room soundscapes. Its lush arrangement made it a refreshing outlier, a reminder of the artistry that once dominated dance floors way back in the day. Extended Mixes That Kept Us Moving Another thing that sets this era apart? The length of these tracks. Seriously—they were long. We're talking 8 to 10-minute versions that DJs could ride for ages, keeping the energy high and the transitions smooth. The early Electro House movement embraced this approach, making sure partygoers stayed glued to the dancefloor for extended stretches. While we aimed to preserve the integrity of the originals, we also made a few light edits for the sake of flow. For example, The Cure & The Cause originally clocked in at a full 10 minutes. A more accessible 6+ minute edit was released later, and that's the version featured in this volume. How Streaming Changed the Club Mix As streaming platforms took off in the late 2000s, track lengths shrank. The push for more plays led to songs being chopped down to under three minutes—great for radio-style streaming, but awful for club DJs. This unfortunate trend carried over to remix culture. While we've bounced back a bit, with the average remix now hovering around five minutes, it's still not quite where it used to be. The reality is, shorter edits limit a DJ's flexibility. When you're forced to use effects or create unnatural transitions just to make a mix work, it can pull the listener out of the experience. Ideally, we'd find a sweet spot around seven minutes—long enough to build momentum,

What is the definition of "soul" ? According to the Oxford English Dictionary, it is "emotional or intellectual energy or intensity". Well that certainly sums it up for me. "The Soul Explosion" is all about sharing the tunes and the music that I love with a wider audience. The aim is to cover a wide range of musical genres, from soul, boogie, modern soul, northern soul, rare groove, jazz, funk, soulful garage, gospel, jazz-funk, old skool hip-hop, motown, disco and everything in between. Whatever you hear on "The Soul Explosion" has one thing in common - every single track is a CHOOON (no fillers) !! Hope you enjoy listening as much as I will playing for you

The Christmas Eve edition of The Soul Damn Phisticated! Radio Show was a semi festive affair, the seasonal Elves must have been Mogwai's as Gremlins tried to hijack the first hour - they were given short shrift and the music continued with the likes of Amp Fiddler - R.I.P, Jonas, Alex Fanjul Feat Rich Beggar, Carlene Graham and a little something from the Salsoul label and some festive Jazz . . . Thank you all for your support this year and I wish you all a very Merry Christmas / Happy Holidays and a prosperous 2024

Next year will mark the 50th anniversary of the creation of Salsoul Records, perhaps the most recogniseably sampled catalogue in the history of disco. The label name came from the US urban latino community who were listening to a mash-up of salsa and soul, and it was established by brothers Joseph, Kenneth and Stan Cayre. They created a disco genre which was influenced by Philadelphia International, in fact they hired some of Philadelphia's musicians to help develop their own signature uplifting orchestral strings and brass sound. That sound is perhaps best exemplified by the many tracks recorded by The Salsoul Orchestra, who also backed many of their other artists. And in this special mix you'll hear many of the Salsoul Orchestra's best performances. Enjoy over an hour of my Salsoul favourites, given nu disco makeovers by some great DJs and producers including Dr Packer, Dmitri from Paris, The Reflex, Dave Lee, and Loshmi. ENJOY. The Ladies of SKYY have the distinction of being the last sister-trio still performing together in classic entertainment. Denise, Dolores and Bonné Dunning are the original female vocalists who provided the sensual signature sound of the R&B band SKYY. The sisters joined forces with Solomon Roberts, Jr. (producer, songwriter, drummer, guitarist), Anibal “Booche” Sierra (lead guitarist), and Gerald Lebon (bassist) in 1979. SKYY set themselves apart from other bands of that time with their space-age inspired costumes and a Brooklyn inspired sound. SKYY recorded ten albums and performed on several tours with A-list artists between 1979 and 1993 under Salsoul, Capitol and Atlantic Records. They appeared on numerous television shows, including Soul Train, American Bandstand, Showtime at the Apollo, Solid Gold and BET'S Video Soul with Donny Simpson. They also appear in a commercial for Schlitz Malt Liquor with the Drifters. Their music can be heard in the soundtracks of two movies, “Action Jackson” and “Beauty Shop.” Their biggest chart position was achieved in 1982 when the Salsoul Records album “SKYYLINE” was certified gold and reached #1 album status on the R&B charts and #18 on the Pop charts. SKYY's legacy was chronicled in their TVOne Unsung episode which aired on March 15, 2020, the day the world stood still. The show highlighted the group's top hits, Call Me, Start of a Romance, Let's Celebrate, Here's To You and Real Love, and was a sentimental reminder of the impact their career had on their fans during that magical musical era of the 80's and 90's. After SKYY recorded its final album in 1992, the sister-trio emerged as Ladies of SKYY. For over four decades, their dynamic vocals and captivating stage shows have upheld the legacy of the band's funky and infectious sound, keeping their music alive in the hearts and souls of their fans. These ladies have bridged the gap between generations of music lovers and their longevity has earned them their rightful place among the founding females of the disco, dance, soul, funk, hip hop and R&B musical genres. Salsoul Records will Re-Release of SKYY's Classic Album SkyyLine on January 20th 2023. Salsoul Records recently launched the Disco Essentials vinyl series, re-introducing the classic hits from its catalogue of soul, disco, and funk artists that listeners grew to love from the 70s and 80s. Originally released in 1981, SkyyLine was the Brooklyn- based group's fourth album. Hit singles include ‘Let's Celebrate,' ‘When You Touch Me,' and the mainstream success, ‘Call Me' (which came in at number one on the US Billboard Black Singles and number three on the US Billboard Hot Dance Music/Club Play charts). The Ladies of SKYY believe that the re-release of the album, SkyyLine, will introduce a new audience to the Funk/ R & B sounds that have heavily influenced both club and hip-hop, bridging the gap between generations of music lovers. In celebration of this momentous occasion, the remaining original members of SKYY are set to unite for a reunion concert for one night only, produced by AKW Enterprises in New York City. SkyyLine will be available January 20,2023 on a limited-edition purple fog vinyl with Salsoul Records obi-strip! Pre-orders will be available on Amazon and at Indie Stores across the USA. “It is an honor and privilege to have the opportunity to re-introduce SKYY to the world and introduce SKYY and The Ladies of SKYY to a new generation.”- Austin Kwame Wilkinson, AKW Enterprises. The band recently announce the SKYY Reunion Concert in New York City at the Cutting Room on February 25th 2023. TRUE HOUSE STORIES W/ BOBBY & STEVE (GROOVE ODYSSEY) # 093 - PART 1 Acclaimed DJs, pioneering promoters, long running radio presenters, record producers and business partners in the iconic Groove Odyssey brand, Bobby & Steve have reached legendary status in the soulful house and disco scene. Marking 34 years in the industry in 2019, the duo is also celebrating 10 years of their brand Groove Odyssey with partner Michael Hughes. With a residency at the world-renowned Ministry of Sound and Groove Odyssey hosting the main stage at the mighty 51st State Festival as well as their 3rd year of the GO Ibiza weekender and further dates being announced, this is set to be a remarkable year for Groove Odyssey. In addition to this, their eagerly anticipated debut artist album will be released at the end of 2019, and includes collaborations from Leroy Burgess, Duane Harden and Barbara Tucker amongst others. And with their long running prime time show ‘Groove Odyssey Sessions' on HouseFM.net, Bobby & Steve are in demand now more than ever. In 2016 the connoisseurs of house were honored to be invited as the first international guests to play at the Chosen Few festival in Chicago, where they were presented with a lifetime achievement award in front of 40,000 house heads. On this momentous event they were quoted as saying “to play and receive that award in Chicago where House music began, was truly an overwhelming spiritual experience”. Pioneers of soulful house since 1984, the inimitable twins Robert and Stephen Laviniere were born and bred in London's East End. They started their career at a time when the landscape of London's nightlife was changing forever, and the rare groove movement was on the cusp of explosion. The boys were instrumental figures in the eighties warehouse party scene, playing their favorite soul, funk and disco music alongside fellow stalwart DJ's such as Norman Jay, Paul ‘Trouble' Anderson, Jazzy B and Trevor Nelson. In 1985 Gordon Mac's (then pirate) radio station Kiss FM launched. A mouthpiece for the scene, Mac approached the twins, offering them a weekly slot and for over ten years their trailblazing Zoo Experience show was the stations longest running specialist show. Broadcast each and every Friday night between the hours of 10.00 pm and 12.00 am, it was a hotbed of exclusive tracks and remixes. Not only did their show give many of today's most recognized DJ's and labels their first opportunity to be heard on the UK's airwaves, in turn it allowed their faithful listeners the opportunity to hear new releases from significant UK and American labels, DJ's and producers. Alongside their radio show, the twins began their, now somewhat legendary, Klub Zoo night, originating at Munkberry's and later at the Soho Theatre. Famed for its mix of classic soul, disco and rare grooves, devoted followers would flock to the club each week to hear their favourite Salsoul, Prelude or Philadelphia International tracks. However, a trip to New York at the tail end of the eighties marked a major turning point in the futures of Bobby & Steve.
Wow wo wo so todays show was a fantastic journey where Salsoul met Westend records and reworked them.. Hand picked and a special selection delovered in the Style of the paradise Garage,, I hope you enjoy the journey

This is an excerpt of a full length episode currently only available to patrons. To become a patron and support what we're doing from £3 per month, head to www.patreon.com/LoveMessagePod. In this patrons-only episode Tim concludes reading from his essay Decolonising Disco—Counterculture, Postindustrial Creativity, the 1970s Dance Floor and Disco, published recently in the collection Global Dance Cultures in the 1970s and 1980s: Disco Heterotopias, edited by Flora Pitrolo and Marko Zubak. Picking up where he left off in part 1, Tim introduces us to Sylvere Lotringer, the French critic who straddled both the worlds of academic Post-Structuralism and the Downtown NYC scene, itself a 'heterotopic' formation (after Foucault). We hear about the hybridity and convergence of the city's overlapping scenes in the early '80s, embodied by musicians like Arthur Russell, before the AIDS and Crack crises, Reaganomics and shifts in the art world caused this exciting collectivism to give way to more individualist modes of creation and production. In the final part of the essay, Tim shows how music from Africa, Latin America and Europe was a central component of what he calls 'Discotheque music' (ie records you would hear on the DJ-led dancefloors) which produced the original disco sound. With reference to SalSoul, Saturday Night Fever, Nigerian disco, contemporary reissue labels and more, Tim makes the case for these non-American, largely non-white musics to be included in an expanded edition of the disco archive. Lots of great musical examples are used in this show to illustrate the essay. The first time Groovejet was played? It was March 1999 I was going to the Winter Music Conference in Miami for the second time, my flight was in the early morning and I wanted to stay awake until it was time to leave, so went in my studio and I sampled a previously unreleased Tom Moulton version of Carol Williams “Love is You” that I had just bought on a Salsoul release called “12" Gold Master Series”. I played with those samples for an hour or so and came up with this instrumental track, I quickly burned 1 copy into a CD and ran to the airport. When I landed in Miami my old friend Boris Dlugosch came to pick me up at the airport with a nice rented cabriolet and drove me to my (shitty) hotel in South Beach. While on the road he asked me if I had some new music and I put the CD on the car radio but we kept talking about things and I forgot the CD there. Later that day he was playing along with a great lineup in a club called “Groove Jet” and he invited me to go, when I arrived there people I didn't even know ran to me asking about my new record, I didn't understand what they were talking about until Boris told me he had played that demo and that the people went nuts. That's how the story began for the record that changed my life and that's why I decided to call it Groovejet, also Boris suggested calling the EP “Mighty Miami EP”. I always regretted arriving late that night and missing that special moment when it was played for the first time, I wish I was in that dancefloor but… Incredibly enough, 10 years later a friend of Boris told him that he was there that night and that he recorded the whole set from the middle of the dancefloor using the internal microphone of a MINIDISK WALKMAN. As the room wasn't that big the recording is somehow even better than a proper direct one because you can hear people's reactions to each record, you can even hear people asking him what the record was. The whole set is amazing and an accurate portrait of the best tracks of that season in my opinion. So here it is: Boris Dlugosch live at Groove Jet, March 16th, 1999.
