The world is not a machine. Humanity is not a mistake. Those should not be such bold words and yet, according to this week's guest, Spencer Klavan, they need to be repeated as often as possible today. For centuries, a grim anti-human outlook has taken hold of the public imagination, teaching us all to view ourselves as random products of a cruel and uncaring natural world. The pursuit of scientific understanding of the material world has made mastery of it and determinism the reigning orthodoxy. Light of the Mind, Light of the World, Spencer's new book, tells a daring new story about how we got here, and how we can chart a better path forward. He argues that science itself is leading us not away from God but back to him, and to the ancient faith that places the human soul at the center of the universe. Spencer A. Klavan is returning guest to the Anchoring Truths Podcast. A graduate of Yale, he earned his doctorate in ancient Greek literature from Oxford University. He is the author of the acclaimed book How to Save the West: Ancient Wisdom for 5 Modern Crises and the editor of Gateway to the Stoics. The host of the Young Heretics podcast and associate editor of the Claremont Review of Books, he has written for many outlets, including The Atlantic, the Los Angeles Times, City Journal, Newsweek, The Federalist, The American Mind, and The Daily Wire. He lives near Nashville, Tennessee. Buy Light of the Mind, Light of the World here. Follow Spencer on X/Twitter Subscribe to Spencer's Substack

Alexander Solzhenitsyn is a name that every American should know. But sadly, and unsurprisingly, few do. Solzhenitsyn grew up in the height of Soviet Russia and became disillusioned with the Soviet apparatus and published articles and books criticizing Josef Stalin and the regime. To commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Gulag Archipelago, Julie is joined by Spencer Klavan for this episode in the Thinker of the Month series to talk about why we should all know about the life of Solzhenitsyn and his insights about communism. Spencer Klavan, host of Young Heretics and author of the book How to Save the West: Ancient Wisdom for Five Modern Crises, rejoins the podcast to talk about the tricky relationship between art and morality. Spencer and Inez share a wide-ranging discussion about whether there's actually an identity between truth and beauty (with all due respect to Keats), what aesthetics reveal about "inner beauty," whether portraying the seductiveness of evil holds dangers for the viewer's heart, and the relationship between art and artist. They also dive into the thorny question of boundaries around art and what, if any, restrictions society ought to place on artistic expression.--High Noon is an intellectual download featuring conversations that make possible a free society. Dr. John Vervaeke and Joe Alto explore the intersections of philosophy, psychology, virtue, and spirituality. Dr. Vervaeke, a cognitive psychologist, and Joe Alto, a campus minister, and aspiring clinical mental health counselor, dissect the modern meaning crisis and offer refreshing perspectives on living a virtuous life. This discussion is a nourishing blend of philosophical insights and therapeutic practices, creating a unique roadmap for anyone grappling with questions of meaning, goodness, and beauty. The episode brings forth debates on the diminishing efficacy of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and underscores the essentialness of integrating philosophical ideas back into modern psychology. Joe Alto also shares compelling thoughts on his role as a spiritual guide in today's complex world, especially for those navigating existential challenges. This episode is a must-listen for anyone seeking to cultivate virtues, tackle a meaning crisis, or simply broaden their understanding of spirituality and mental health. Joe Alto is a burgeoning intellectual force in the realms of psychology, philosophy, and theology. Currently a Clinical Mental Health Counseling student and the Campus Minister at Woodstock University in Cleveland, Ohio, Joe effortlessly melds academia with spirituality as a devoted Catholic. He's the charismatic host of "The Gist with Joe," a YouTube channel where he engages in enlightening conversations with great minds to distill the essence—the "gist"—of their intellectual and spiritual quests. His explorations focus on unearthing the good, the true, and the beautiful, making each dialogue not just a discussion, but a journey towards deeper understanding. An "ecology" to nurture these practices is passionately advocated for. 01:00:25 — Fatherhood becomes a poignant lens through which Joe Alto examines reality. Personal life and intellectual pursuits collide, resulting in an enriched understanding of existence. 01:03:31 — Dr. Vervaeke delicately balances aspiration and humility, sharing his hope to influence a sizable audience without crossing into the realm of idolization. 01:07:58 — The digital and the physical intersect as virtue, virtuosity, and the virtual world are dissected. Dr. Vervaeke emphasizes the urgency of translating online actions into real-world impact. 01:10:20 — Beauty gets another layer of complexity as Joe poses a philosophical question about physical attractiveness. Is beauty in the eye of the beholder, or is it an intrinsic quality? 01:13:05 — The episode culminates in a profound note on the essence of inner beauty. Both speakers agree that true beauty is far more than skin deep, anchoring the conversation in an emotional and spiritual richness.
"Poverty causes crime. Racism causes obesity. Climate change causes mental health issues." Many of us may think that these kinds of assertions reflect recent irrational outgrowths of liberal thought. "No one would say such a thing 100 years ago!" -- Right? Actually--someone did. Statements such as these have their intellectual roots going all back to the 18th century when Rousseau put forth the idea that men are born perfect in the state of nature and it is society that corrupts them. For this month's thinker Julie discusses Genevan philosopher Jean-Jacques Rousseau with Spencer Klavan, host of Young Heretics podcast and author of How to Save the West: Ancient Wisdom for 5 Modern Crises https://a.co/d/eCxeWvZCheck out other Julie Hartman videos: https://www.youtube.com/@juliehartman Follow Julie Hartman on social media: Website: https://juliehartmanshow.com/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/julierhartman/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/JulieRHartman Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/timelesswithjuliehartmanSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
175 years ago this year the Communist Manifesto was written. According to Marx, man's dreams and high ideals are not imitations of a supernatural truth but that men's actions are driven by material wealth and survival. He viewed republican political theory as mere window dressing that allowed the powerful to disguise their real struggle for power. To Marx, people must rise up, seize control of the means of production, form a government where all goods are held in common and distributed according to need. At long last, the people's cries have been heard--Young Heretics returns! Every day seems to bring some new catastrophe, and it's easy to see all the things that have gone wrong. But what would it mean to go right? You can't build a philosophy, or a life, on saying "no" to things. Somewhere you have to say "yes." In this new series, Spencer explores the nature of virtue and what it means to seek a truly good life (rather than just a not-bad one). Sometimes, the only way forward is backward. For instance, the modern obsession with “my personal truth.” The solution to this destructive force, according to author and podcast host Spencer Klavan, lies in ancient wisdom and the timeless question, “How is that working out for you?” Spencer joins Glenn to apply his expertise in classic literature and philosophy to the enigmas and culture wars of today, from the hubris of atheism to the rot of academia. And with a Ph.D. from Oxford, he knows a thing or two about academics. He walks Glenn through how the innovations of science have led to the religion of science, which in turn has bred horrors. He explains why he says, “Transgenderism is transhumanism.” And as a gay man, he responds to the destruction of truth in the name of people like him, including the possibility that Pride Month could be used to paint any dissenters as “Christian nationalists.” Spencer also walks Glenn through the big ideas in his latest book, “How to Save the West: Ancient Wisdom for 5 Modern Crises.” But, despite it all, there's room for hope, he says. The decay of society may just be a great opportunity to make civilization better. Dave Rubin of “The Rubin Report” talks to Spencer Klavan, host of “The Young Heretics,” about his new book, “How to Save the West: Ancient Wisdom for 5 Modern Crises”; how the problems that we face as a modern society are not all that different from the problems humanity has always faced; how the great books of Western literature provide more valuable insights into the crises of Western civilization than most modern-day gurus do; how to save Western culture; the most valuable lessons we can learn from classical literature; and much more.
Western Culture is in a state of crisis. Objective truth is replaced by virtual reality, humanity by “transhumanism,” meaning by meaninglessness, religion by whole-hearted devotion to scientism, and the republican government by the liberal internationalist regime. This cultural chaos inevitably leads to the question—Can the West be saved? On this episode of Hank Unplugged the Oxford-educated classicist Spencer Klavan joins Hank Hanegraaff to discuss his new book How to Save the West: Ancient Wisdom for 5 Modern Crises in which Klavan identifies five “essential crises”: The Crisis of Reality, The Crisis of the Body, The Crisis of Meaning, The Crisis of Religion and The Crisis of Regime. Klavan's deep understanding of the roots of Western civilization make him a trustworthy guide for those concerned about the future of Western civilization. The situation is dire. But every crisis we face today we have faced—and surmounted—before. Sarah Huckabee Sanders during her response to the State of the Union on Tuesday. Dr. Spencer Klavan, author, “How to Save the West” How to Save the West: Ancient Wisdom for 5 Modern Crises
What can ancient wisdom teach us about today's crises?According to Spencer Klavan, author of "How to Save the West: Ancient Wisdom for 5 Modern Crises," it can teach us a lot. "Whenever you call a book something like 'How to Save the West,' you have a certain imposter syndrome, or it's impossible not to feel a kind of trepidation, but that's actually why I wrote the book in a certain sense, that feeling of just overwhelm and despair that I think we all can relate to," Klavan, associate editor at the Claremont Institute, says on today's podcast. Klavan adds: What's the role of a human being? What's our place in the universe? What is good and what is evil? Those sorts of questions actually are human-sized.And so I wanted to give people just a taste of some of the wisdom that we can get if we access these great texts and incorporate their wisdom into our lives, because we think of these things as kind of inaccessible or beyond us, but actually they're there for you, and the book is designed to equip you with some of that. Klavan joins "The Daily Signal Podcast" to discuss his new book, what he thinks the West needs to be saved from, and what he views as the biggest threat to the West. Hosted on Acast.
