TVC 672.2: Tripp Whetsell, author of Norman Lear: His Life and Times, talks to Ed about how the latitude that Norman Lear often gave his actors and his writers on his television shows was often a double-edged sword; Lear's years as a motion picture producer in the 1960s; and the events that led to the premiere on All in the Family on CBS in January 1971. Norman Lear: His Life and Times is available wherever books are sold through Applause Books. Tripp Whetsell will appear at Book Soup, 8818 Sunset Blvd. in West Hollywood on Wednesday, Jan. 8 beginning at 7pm.
TVC 672.1: Ed welcomes entertainment journalist and comedy historian Tripp Whetsell. Tripp's latest book, Norman Lear: His Life and Times, is the first comprehensive biography of the legendary, Emmy Award-winning producer of All in the Family, Maude, Good Times, The Jeffersons, The Fact of Life, and many other series that helped elevate the American network sitcom. While much has been written about Norman Lear, before and after his death on Dec. 5. 2023, Tripp's book shows that there remains much to learn about the legendary āman in the white hatāā since Lear himself was often reluctant to discuss his early life in great detail. Topics this segment include how Lear got his foothold in show business by way of Danny Thomas, and his roots in the golden era of variety television throughout the 1950s and early '60s. Norman Lear: His Life and Times is available wherever books are sold through Applause Books. For our listeners in Southern California, Tripp Whetsell will appear at Book Soup, 8818 Sunset Blvd. in West Hollywood on Wednesday, Jan. 8 beginning at 7pm.
Dennis is joined via Zoom by author David Ciminello to discuss his delicious debut novel The Queen of Steeplechase Park which is the story of an irrepressible Coney island burlesque queen and meatball entrepreneur named Belladonna Marie Donato. David talks about how the character is inspired by his larger-than-life great aunt Emily who was, in fact, a burlesque performer on Coney Island and actually won a trophy for Best Bust for her 38 DDDs. David also talks about how he got the book published, how he chose the mouth-watering recipes that appear throughout the book and the spontaneous reading that unfolded at a recent extended family gathering where his cousin's daughter read the role of young Belladonna Marie. Other topics include: why David chose to make Belladonna Marie so sex and body positive, working as an actor in L.A. and playing a barber in a classic episode of Seinfeld, writing a movie that Shirley MacLaine directed called The Dress Code and working alongside her on set and why it was important to him to write a book that was "chock-full of queer optimism." Dennis will be interviewing David at LA's Book Soup on Sunday, November 10th at 3 PM. https://www.davidciminello.com/

Nick Cave is a musician, songwriter, author, and actor, best known as the frontman of the band Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, though is also beloved for his early group, The Birthday Party. Albums from The Boatman's Call (1997) to Skeleton Tree (2016) showcase Cave's ability to craft emotionally charged and intellectually stimulating compositions filled with hauntingly poetic lyrics. Beyond music, Cave's authored several books, including And the Ass Saw the Angel (1989) and Stranger Than Kindness (2021). His collaborations with director John Hillcoat on movies like The Proposition (2005) and Lawless (2012) have received critical acclaim. And he maintains an open and engaging dialogue with his fans through his newsletter, The Red Hand Files. This podcast was recorded the day after the conclusion of Caves's duo tour with Radiohead's bassist, Colin Greenwood, in Los Angeles. A few days after recording this podcast, he used The Red Hand Files to write the following message to his fans: āAfter I stepped off stage at the final show, I changed from my grey suit into a blue suit, ate some seafood with Colin, and then headed to the aftershow, where I hung out with some old friends for an hour or so before going back to the hotel with Susie. We stayed up for a few hours and then tried to sleep, but I was hyped up, so I took a sleeping pill at 4 am ā which was a dumb idea because I had an interview that morning with Rick Rubin for his podcast. Anyway, when I woke up, I put on a grey suit, jumped into the car with my driver to go to Malibu, did Rick's podcast (which could turn out quite interesting as I'm not sure the sleeping pill had completely worn off), then started back to L.A. In the car, I began to feel a bit rough, so we parked up at Zuma Beach, where I threw off my clothes and jumped into the sea in an unsuccessful attempt to restore myself; then we carried on to the hotel, where I changed from my grey suit into a blue suit before heading to Book Soup for [a] signing . . . After the signing, I returned to the hotel feeling tired and weird, sat up with Susie for a while, went to bed, woke up about 2 am, threw up in the sink and collapsed unconscious on the bathroom floor. Susie found me there and hauled me back onto the bed; my assistant was called to the hotel, some extremely handsome emergency paramedics turned up, a lovely nurse arrived and fixed me to a drip, and later, I spoke to an eighty-nine-year-old saint of a doctor who diagnosed an acute gastro event.ā ------ Thank you to the sponsors that fuel our podcast and our team: LMNT Electrolytes https://drinklmnt.com/tetra ------ House of Macadamias https://www.houseofmacadamias.com/tetra ------ Squarespace https://squarespace.com/tetra ------

Today I welcome actor, filmmaker, playwright, and novelist Tim Blake Nelson to the show. Tim is one of the great character actors of our time. Like a lot of people, I first became aware of him in the Coen Bros film O Brother Where Art Thou. Tim's novel is called City of Blows and it just came out on Unnamed Press. It didn't click with me that Tim was actually the writer of this incredible book until I saw his picture on the promo materials. When I read the synopsis, I knew it was my kind of book. "A sprawling, character-driven depiction of the modern film industry.ā (Source: Unnamed Press) City of Blows is beautifully written and the character development is incredible. It was an honor to talk with Tim about the book and his process for creating. Thanks for listening! Today on the show I get to talk with Erik Tarloff. Erik is the author of the national best-seller Face-Time, The Man Who Wrote the Book, and All Our Yesterdays. His early work was writing primarily for the screen, including an early draft of Disney's animated Aladdin, & Car 54, Where Are You? for Orion Pictures. His TV work includes writing episodes of M*A*S*H, All in the Family, The Bob Newhart Show, The Jeffersons, Alice and many others. He's written pro bono speeches for Al Gore and former President Clinton. That's just some of his work - he's had a very prolific career. I first heard about him in 2019 when his book The Woman in Black came out on Rare Bird Books. It was one of my favorites from that year. His latest novel is called Tell Me the Truth About Love. I highly recommend it. If you live in San Francisco pick up a copy at Books, Inc. or Pegasus if you are in Berkeley. For our LA listeners, as always, check out Book Soup or Skylight. If you're from my hometown in Salt Lake, Wellerworks is great place - located in downtown Salt Lake. Erik was a blast to talk to and I hope we get him back on the show at some point in the future. Thanks for listening. Kyler

Vroman's in Pasadena and Book Soup in West Hollywood are two of Southern California's most iconic bookstores. Though they're in very different communities, each one plays a central role in the life of the city. Which is why, in late September, Vroman's sent a shudder through the world of Southern California's readers when the 126 year old bookstore announced it was at risk of closing due to the effects of the pandemic. In an extraordinary bit of outreach, Vroman's asked its community to shop early and often for the holidays and to recommend the store by word of mouth. The situation has since stabilized, but the risk remains. In the third part of our "Art of Bookselling" series,Ā Air/Light editor David L. Ulin talks to Julia Cowlishaw, the CEO of Vroman's and Book Soup. Cowlishaw and Ulin discuss the issues facing independent booksellers in the world of COVID-19, how she approaches managing two very different bookstores, and more.

āA wiser feller than myself once said, āSometimes you eat the bear, and sometimes the bear, well, he eats you.ā ā A few of our listeners may recognize this quote from a certain 1998 movie but, for others, well, it may just be a confusing adage. For todayās episode of the B&H Photography Podcast, however, we did indeed āeat the bearā and are very fortunate to welcome actor, musician, and photographer Jeff Bridges to our show. In addition to being an Academy Award-winning actor, Bridges photographs the ābehind-the-scenesā making of his movies with a Widelux swing-lens panoramic film camera, and over the years has collected those images in private editions, made for the cast and crew. In 2003, he published a book called, Jeff Bridges: Pictures, and in October 2019, is releasing the incredible Jeff Bridges: Pictures Volume 2, which āexpands on Bridges' intimate vision of Hollywood behind-the-scenes. Included within are rare looks at the famed actors, top directors, talented costumers, and makeup artists, skilled and creative set and art decoration, and the rest of theĀ passionate crews involved in such memorable movies asĀ True Grit,Ā Crazy Heart,Ā The Giver,Ā TRON: Legacy, andĀ Hell or High Water.ā With Bridges, we discuss his affinity for the Widelux, and how he handles this cameraāknown for its idiosyncrasies. We relate the nuts-and-bolts aspects of his workflow, from measuring exposure with a Minolta spot meter Ā to using ISO 3200 film, to how he composes a frame with a 140-degree angle of view. We also discuss other wide-format cameras, how Bridges works on set with other actors and crew members, the creation of his new book, and the scope of his photographic work, which has become a unique documentation of movie-making from the 1980s until today. Join us for this lively conversation and look for Jeff Bridges: Pictures Volume 2, published by powerHouse Books and distributed by Penguin Random House. Alexi talks to magician, musician, actor, and author: Rob Zabrecky! Former frontman of the band Possum Dixon, an iconic figure on the LA scene, and overall master entertainer; Rob's just come out with his memoir "Strange Cures" available on amazon. Rob and Alexi talk magic, growing up in LA - being neither rich nor privileged, warts, being shot by his FBI impersonating uncle, witchy remedies, the LA music scene (The JabberJaw, The Smell), The Magic Castle, writing, addiction, proposing to his wife, acting, and so much more! Watch Rob on Season 2 of CBS's Strange Angel. See him perform live at the Magic Castle (if you can figure out how to get IN to the exclusive, members only, legendary club!). His story is a weird and worthy subject. As is he." - Jason Alexander, actor, comedian, director "Zabreckyās memoirs are surprising, addictive, terrifying, magical. He careens through childhood, rock and roll, and popular entertainment by driving on the shoulder, passing on the right, and then playing bumper cars with the cold, hard truth. Youāre in for a fantastic ride." - Jim Steinmeyer, President of the Magic Castle, author, inventor "There are some voices, some lives, some stories that so uniquely and powerfully make up the blood of Los Angeles' pulsing, and Rob Zabrecky'sĀ Strange CuresĀ is without a doubt one of them. Should sexual predators be eligible for awards? Debate starts at 22:54. Director, writer and producer, Tremain Hayhoe (https://twitter.com/TremainHayhoe) joins us this week. He's responsible for casting both me and Rucka in a movie together! Can the silver screen handle so much sex-appeal? Being that the same amount of sex-appeal was seen in my first movie, Ooga Booga, the answer is yes. Speaking of sex-appeal, know who has none? Harvey Weinstein. We debate whether or not pieces of shit like him should be eligible for awards. Welcome to this week's show! We're talking books, housework & resentment, and cheating. Oh, and I just started watching Big Mouth on Netflix which is an absurd, bizarre cartoon all about going through puberty. You might want to check it out. Cadessa wrote in about her non-existent sex life and how listening to the show changed everything. Sarah has a girlfriend who refuses to help with housework and now she has deep resentment about always being the one to do it or to have to remind her. Is this a silly thing to be angry about? Or is this a big deal? Steph, a Patreon supporter, weighed in with her thoughts, and then I weigh in with mine. We have to remember that emotional labor is so real. When we are treating a partner like a child (either because they refuse to step up and help or because we have control issues), of course our libido is going to take a nose dive. You deserve support, it just depends on what that support looks like. Julia Callahan is here from Rare Bird Lit to talk about why they publish sex worker stories and why they love centering marginalized voices. They have a new book called Identity that's a photo book and essays all about gender identity. Absolutely worth checking out. We end this week's episode with a very messy situation sent in by Emily. She's in love and has been with her boyfriend for several years, but she's been cheating endlessly for a few years and doesn't know what to do. Being in a toxic relationship like this isn't good for anyone. Hear my advice to Emily and let me know what you think. Follow Sex Gets Real on Twitter and Facebook.Ā It's true. Oh! What is the most overrated sex position? Debate starts at 25:39. We're joined by two guests this week, Ela Darling (https://twitter.com/ElaDarling) and Dreadmere (https://www.youtube.com/user/Dreadmere). Since it's our big 69th episode and we're immature, we decided to make this a sex-themed episode. Though one could argue that every episode I'm on is sex-themed. We debated the most overrated sex positions, and I brought in a controversial choice that I knew would be dead in the water because everyone's a brainwashed idiot who's bullied into having the opinions they have. This week, I'm so excited to be speaking with the magical Ruth Bernstein, who I know from my good old Book Soup days. Ruth wrote her thesis at Pitzer College on libraries and I knew everyone would be down to think about that.Ā Not only do we talk about how amazing libraries are, but we dive into the topic of what role libraries play in society, the way programs for libraries get funded and what might be the best use of library resources today.Ā And... for the tech lovers we not only talk about the physical space of a library but also about it's increasing role of being an access point for information both online and off.Ā Nerds will delight... happy listening.Ā See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

On today's Satellite Sisters, Lian, Monica, Julie and Liz tackle the world including: Julie's Star Wars report - Sending off three generations of her family in Dallas to see the new movie The Force Awakens complete with young Benjamin in his Storm Trooper costume. Ā It reminded her a little too much of being on an airplane (recliner. tray, movie - you know the drill) but otherwise a good time was had by all. Anne Marie Wirth Cauchon is the guest. Her debut novel, Nothing, is now available from Two Dollar Radio. Joy Williams calls it "A burning mean and darkly mysterious read." And Kate Zambreno says "I could tell you that Anne Marie Wirth Cauchon has written an utterly contemporary novel of our fragmented culture, a novel that I think might be the great American novel of the selfie, brilliantly alternating the narratives of two young travelers partying and searching and losing themselves in the wild West ā a Kerouac hitchhiker juxtaposed with the nihilistic, wanting, wandering Ruth and her toxic friendship with her prettier best friend. But this is what I want to tell youāthis is what you need to know ā Anne Marie Wirth Cauchon writes like a beast, brutal and ecstatic. You need to read this." We open by discussing Mia's dressing habits. We promote the new thriller by David Rich, "Middle Man," which is very entertaining. Make sure to go to the book signing at Book Soup this weekend. We are joined in the studio by musician Heather Stewart, a very fun woman with original music.

Colin Marshall sits down above Spring Street in downtown Los Angeles with Tyson Cornell, proprietor ofĀ Rare Bird BooksĀ andĀ Rare Bird Lit, former longtimeĀ Director of Marketing & Publicity at Book Soup on the Sunset Strip, punk rocker, and co-editor of the forthcoming essay collectionĀ Yes Is the Answer: And Other Prog Rock Tales. They discuss the seeming contradiction between Los Angeles' image as an "unreaderly" place and its rank as the largest book market in America; this city's tendency not, unlike other cities, to tell you straight-up what it is; how his study of the American newsstand brought him to Los Angeles, and then to Book Soup; the perspective he gained on Los Angeles through both working newsstands and having as a neighbor the manager of the Laugh Factory; how the reading came first in his life, and then the punk rock;Ā Yes Is the AnswerĀ and the supposed antagonism between punk and prog; his time rocking in the both-advanced-and-retrograde Japan alongside former hair metalists;Ā Sparkstastic, the upcoming book on Los Angeles (but England-beloved) band Sparks by Tosh Berman, also formerly of Book Soup; the nature of working at a bookstore, or of trying and failing to work at a bookstore, among the industry's classically high-functioning freaks; how much crazier crazy writers can get than crazy rockers, and the ultimately tiresome nature of the non-Thompson, non-Bukowski literary wild man persona; the way that books and bookstores seem both unimprovable, in away, and yet somehow headed straight for disappearance; why books cost so much, and the advantage of slapping dogs on their covers; and the implications (and potential conspiracy theories surrounding) girls who make millions on their self-published vampire e-books.
