With the podcast computer safely returned, it seemed only fitting to share a conversation with the man that ultimately got it back to us -- Henry Nguyen. He and his wife own Monkish, which produces some of the most sought-after beer in the US. But instead of talking about the freedoms of success, Henry talked with Matty and Noah exclusively about experiences and emotions that discussed too infrequently in the brewing industry. Between incessant self-doubt, the weight of indecision, fear of the future, and discussing what striving for perfection should cost a person, this was certainly one of the realest and cathartic conversations the podcast has seen. Henry's perspective and honesty is valuable to anyone who's been on either side of the counter of not only any brewery, but any small business, and we hope you get as much from it as we did..Music: "Mountain Climb" by Jake Hill

Today’s episode is part of a series of talks we recorded at the Shelton Brothers festival back in August in Atlanta — a phenomenal gathering of some of the best brewers in the world, as well as a few niche cider and wine makers, all holding their own in one of the most diverse and interesting product portfolios that’s ever been assembled. The folks from Shelton Brothers gave us a room, and free rein to curate talks with anyone we wanted, on any topics we wished. It’s a somewhat speedy series of interviews, much shorter than you’re used to on GBH, and that’s because we wanted to see if a series of topics might emerge — a pattern of sorts, that might give us an indication of what’s on people’s minds at this point in time, in this particular portfolio of producers. And sure enough, it worked. On a few of these episodes, other folks from GBH drop in from time to time as well, so you’ll also here from Blake Tyers and Kyle Kastranec

Season 3, Episode 44 – Tyler King and Brian White join us in the studio to talk about their new brewery, Brewery Rex. So. Brewery Rex. Ever heard of them? Chances are maybe you have, but probably not. Brewery Rex is Tyler King (formerly, the Director of Brewing Operations at The Bruery) and Brian White’s (Monkish Brewing, Chapman Crafted) newest venture. They have been in the process of opening the brewery for a couple of years now, but the public really knew nothing about the place. Tyler and Brian decided it was finally time to come to the 4B studio and share some of the details and collective vision about the brewery. This Week’s Beers We cover quite a bit of territory on the show this week, from what Tyler and Brian want the brewery to be, to craft beer burnout and what to do to avoid it. Yeah, we go deep this week. Tyler and Brian have some fresh and interesting ideas about opening their own space. We’re pretty excited to be able to hopefully try some of their brews within the next year or so and you should be, too. Oh, and this week’s show also marks the first time we put a lime in a bottle of beer and drink it. Thanks, Tyler. Thanks, Brian… BREW THE SHIT OUT OF IT. The 4B Flight, Episode 1 – Today we begin The 4B Flight, a solid week of new Four Brewers episodes! We’re kicking it off with Monkish Brewing Co.’s collaboration IPA with Other Half Brewing, First Things First. Over the last couple of years, we heard from fans of the show that they wished we could release an episode everyday. While that’s flattering and awesome that these super-fans want to hear us on a daily basis, it’s simply impossible for us to release a full episode everyday. But, we had a really cool idea. (It’s an experiment, too.) We want to give the fans exactly what they want, but on our terms. So, we are going to release one full-length regular episode on Monday, and 6 mini-episodes everyday for one week. Pretty cool, right? Well, we’re excited about it! First Things First The first beer in The 4B Flight is a special one from our friends at Monkish Brewing Co.. Known for their spectacular Belgian-style beers, Monkish vowed early on to never make IPA (well, maybe it wasn’t that dramatic). But, times change and hops were piling up in the brewery. Henry and Co. decided that they shouldn’t be bound by these artificial rules imposed upon themselves (again, with the drama) and decided to bring their version of an IPA into this world, with some help from Brooklyn’s Other Half Brewing. The beer went on sale this past weekend and was an instant sell out. Monkish was kind enough to give us the homie hookup with some cans of their new IPA, First Things First. We felt it was appropriate to feature this awesome IPA on the first episode of The 4B Flight. Tune in tomorrow for the next beer in The 4B Flight! Season 2, Episode 46 – This week, beers from two of Los Angeles’ best breweries, Highland Park Brewery and Monkish Brewing Co.. We’re heading back to L.A. this week with two collaboration beers from Monkish Brewing Co. and Highland Park Brewery. These breweries are quickly becoming pillars of Los Angeles beer with their awesome farmhouse and sour ales. Highland Park Brewery and Monkish got together in what we consider a match made in beer heaven to make two collaboration beers, Cart Fetish and Pushin’ Carts. Monkish and Highland Park Beers Keeping with the theme of the show, we’re also drinking Monkish Brewing’s first foudre fermented beer, Haiku de Saison and one of our all time favs, Crux. From Highland Park Brewery, we’re drinking Yard Beer, an early favorite of Jason’s that’s pretty great. Exciting things are happening in Los Angeles beer. The beers that Monkish and Highland Park are brewing are nothing less than exceptional, varying from the classic SoCal hoppy IPA to funky and Belgian inspired sour beers. With breweries acquisitions becoming more commonplace, it’s nice to know that curious, innovative, and talented people will be there to keep craft beer going strong. BREW THE SHIT OUT OF IT. Season 2, Episode 4 - This week, we’re on location at Monkish Brewing in Torrance, California with owner, president and brewer Henry Nguyen and Monkish “Evangelist,” Brian White. The second stop on our South Bay/L.A. beer tour, Monkish Brewing Co. has quickly become a brewery in Southern California that has set themselves away from the pack, brewing nothing but Belgian-style inspired beers. We start the show with two beers that have a history with one another, Crux and Oblate. The latter beer was the first to be brewed at Monkish, even though Crux was technically supposed to be the first beer made, but the result was Oblate. They are similar beers but differ in malts and adjusts. Monkish Brewing Co. – Sunset Beer The next beer was a collaboration made with Sunset Beer Company, named Sunset Beer. In the early days of Monkish, Henry was brewing at night and delivering beer during the day. He established relationships with many of shops, and Sunset Beer Company was one of them. This “hipster” beer as Henry calls it, is a witbier made with wheat malt, orange zest, and Lotus seed, as well as Citra, Galaxy, and Mosaic hops. It’s fermented with their house yeast, White Labs WLP530 Abbey Ale Yeast, and bottle conditioned with Brett Trois and Brett Brux yeast. It’s dry, aromatic, hoppy, and absolutely delicious. Fermentors at Monkish Brewing Co. Next up is a beer that has made its way into Matt’s heart, Selah. This beer has only been made once, so far. It was inspired by Jolly Pumpkin‘s approach to beer, and was Monkish’s first beer made with brettanomyces. This is one of only two beers that Matt will drink that contain Sorachi Ace hops, and boy do the hops work well in this beer, giving it a big lemon nose. Henry wanted this beer to finish bone-dry, and used Wyeast 3711 French Saison Yeast, which is know to be a big, big attenuator, as well as Brett Trois and Brett Brux. Foudres at Monkish Brewing Co. The final beer is Shaolin Fist. This beer is very unique in that it is made with Sichuan peppercorns. Henry was unsure this beer would sell, since during fermentation the brewery smelled like a Panda Express restaurant. This is a very savory beer and is quite complex. Nagel jokes about the beer paring well with carne asada tacos, but in reality, it really would pair well! Henry goes in-depth on a lot of the technical stuff behind Monkish beers, and it’s really quite interesting to hear his point of view on beer. If you’re ever in Torrance, pay a visit to Monkish, and head on over to Smog City, which is less than a quarter mile away. Thanks, Monkish! Big thanks to Henry and Brian for having us! Thanks for listening! In this episode, I welcome Joel D'Amico from Monkish Brewing in Torrance, California. Joel and I talk about the history of the brewery, their beers and taste a few in the process. Enjoy (I know I did).
Kester Brewin is back on the podcast. He was part of a live podcast experience at Monkish Brewing company with his partners Peter Rollins & Barry Taylor. This triumvirate of Radical Theology is always a blast to hear and this time time is no exception. During the live event they explored the way in which Radical theology opens up possibilities for political activism. Ohh Kester also talks about technology, space exploration, and hippies. Season 1, Episode 3 - A plethora of delicious craft brew on this week’s show reminds us that we are living in a great time in craft beer. This week on the show, we are quite possibly, drinking all the beers. Well, more like seven different beers, but hey, it’s still a lot of brew. Jason brings us some brews from the northwest from Bale Breaker Brewing and Fort Gorge Brewing. We wrap things up in the first segment with a tasty brew from Los Angeles based brewery, Monkish Brewing. Monkish Brewing, Fort George, and Bale Breaker Brewing Co. Feature: “Guess That Brew!” In the second segment of the show, we introduce our game of sorts, “Guess That Brew.” Basically, we read reviews of different beers from the internet and try to guess which beer the reviewer is describing. It’s actually pretty entertaining. Give it a listen, then try it out with your friends. Feature: “Going In Blind…” Hangar 24, Firestone Walker, Dogfish Head, and Ballast Point Brewing Co. beers for “Guess That Brew!” The final segment of the show is a true test of our collective beer analysis skills. We’re drinking four random brews, procured by our lovely assistant (and Jason’s significant other) Sara. Again, give the segment a listen and try it out for yourself. You’ll be surprised how much you really don’t know about your favorite brews. Cheers, and we’ll see you next week!
