In English, when we say more or less, it means almost or sort of. If you asked me if I was done cleaning my house, I might say more or less. That means I have most of the work done. Maybe there's a couple little things here and there that I still need to clean up, but I'm kind of done cleaning the house, more or less. Another example would be, if I was packing for a trip, you could say, hey, are you done packing? And I could say more or less. This means that I got out my suitcases, and I packed my clothes and some soap and a toothbrush, and I'm pretty much done packing. I'm close to being done packing. I'm more or less done packing, but I probably still want to check things. So when you say more or less, it means something is kind of done or sort of done. In English, when we say less is more, it means that sometimes doing a few simple things is better than doing a whole bunch of complex things. A good example would be to wash your vehicle. Sometimes just a little bit of water with some soap in it is all you need. You don't need a whole bunch of expensive products. Sometimes less is more. You can use this to describe a job as well. Sometimes in teaching, if I try to do 20 or 30 things with a class, they might not remember all of it. So sometimes less is more. Sometimes it's better to do about two or three things well, and then everyone remembers what you did. So sometimes less is more.So to review, more or less means almost or sort of. So, are you almost done this video, Bob? More or less? Actually, less than more on that one, that was probably a bad example. If it was close to the end of the video, I could say more or less. And if you say less is more, it simply means that sometimes doing two or three parts of a process well is better than doing ten or 15 things badly. Sometimes less is more. Did I say more is less? When much of Europe went into lockdown at the start of pandemic, Sweden's lighter touch strategy got lots of attention. Fans of the approach say it was a huge success that showed lockdowns were pointless. Opponents say it has been a disaster. But what do the numbers say? In this episode of More Or Less, Tim Harford and journalist Keith Moore carve a nuanced path through one of the pandemic's most polarising approaches.

“There is one vice of which no man or woman in the world is free; which everyone in the world loathes when he sees it in someone else; and of which hardly any people, except Christians, ever imagine that they are guilty themselves. There is no fault which makes a man or woman more unpopular, and no fault which we are more unconscious of in ourselves. And the more we have it ourselves, the more we dislike it in others.”Those were the wise and spiritually motivated words of C.S. Lewis, a brilliant writer and apologist who in the later years of his life was converted to Christianity. The vice, or as C.S. Lewis called it THE GREAT SIN is perhaps the deadliest of all:PRIDE.Lewis says that pride is an ego–motivated maneuver to hide from ourselves and others the truth about our inner reality. It comes about, says the gospel writer Mark “from within and defiles a man or woman.”Perhaps one of the greatest examples of destructive pride was the ancient King of Babylon, Nebuchadnezzar. This great King, the mightiest of his time, at or about 600 B.C. was a living example of pride which goes before destruction. He built then the city far and a way the most famous and beautiful in the world at that time, the great city of Babylon. Its huge walls were 387 feet high and 85 feet wide, wide enough that four chariots could be driven side by side along the top. The city was a perfect square, 15 miles on each of the four sides, comfortably housing a population of 1.2 million. The mighty Euphrates River flowed through the city and gardens, groves, orchards and farmlands were contained therein, providing enough food to feed the entire city. Nebuchadnezzar in the Book of Daniel was full of himself, as prideful as any man could be. Hear his words about himself and his great creation Babylon:“Is not this great Babylon that I have built for a royal dwelling by my mighty power and for the honor of my majesty?”In one sentence, Nebuchadnezzar referred to himself with one I and two my's. The great Jehovah brought him down, big time because of his arrogance, his egoism. God turned him into a wolfman and for seven years he ate with the animals until such time as he repented and was restored by the Almighty to his throne. In the case of Nebuchadnezzar, pride indeed went before destruction. A good definition of pride is inordinate self–esteem. Too much, character changing to the point where, as C.S. Lewis so well said to the point where this vice causes all to dislike the person. Pride as well is conceit of superiority, better than others, better than the average person, the common man and woman. We see today a perfect example of that in Vladimir Putin. The man is ruthless, barbaric. He is a murderer, a destroyer because HE believes he is right, entitled and destined. He has total disdain for others and through political maneuverings, has become a virtual dictator in Russia like Stalin, like Kruschev, a believer in the theories of Karl Marx, a rabid communist determined to rebuild the old Soviet Union, the UNION OF SOVIET SOCIALIST REPUBLICS.Prideful persons are arrogant. They have an exalted opinion of themselves and there is considerable vanity in their lives. They are indifferent to others. They don't listen. They simply manipulate the opinion of others in order that what they believe and in a prideful way know is right is fully accepted. Such a man was the Apostle Paul, then Saul, hard as a rock, a prideful, hateful pharisee who saw it as his life mission to destroy and kill Christians. Pride in old line Judaism drove him. But the Christ of Glory brought him down, humbled him beyond belief and radically changed his life. Even as God did that to Nebuchadnezzar, and the Son to Paul, so the day will come when Putin will be brought down and his and Russian pride will be destroyed. Never forget that pride goes before destruction. Pride hardens the heart. A prideful person not only does not listen, but cannot learn and can never appreciate others. Take the case of one of the original twelve disciples, Judas. Here was a man with one of the greatest twelve privileges of all mankind. He worked with, was influenced by, learned from and served the Christ of Glory but never learned to appreciate his God–given opportunity. In fact, he sabotaged, sought to betray and was unfaithful with the money of the Apostles. His thievery and personal shame caused him to commit suicide. How much would you have appreciated being on the original twelve of Jesus Christ? Judas was a prideful man. And so was Peter. When the Roman soldiers came to get our Lord, Peter did not depend upon God, or his Lord for defense. But, took it upon himself to go to battle. He drew his sword, cut off the ear of a Roman soldier and otherwise stood ready for battle until he was put down by his Lord. His pride led him to believe that he could save the day, something utterly impossible. Had he gone to battle with the Roman soldiers, Peter's Pride would have destroyed him. Pride goes before destruction.It is indeed a deadly sin, perhaps the deadliest of the sins. IT EXISTS IN YOU AND ME! We hate to be wrong, criticized, ridiculed, mocked or rejected, do we not? All of us are that way MORE OR LESS, all of us. The only real remedy, lasting, permanent and transforming is:SALVATION IN JESUS CHRIST.That includes the input in heart and soul of humility, grace and most of all, LOVE. If God hates pride and God does, and if it is a C.S. Lewis says a vice of which no man in the world is free, and if at times we are even unaware (unconscious) of pride in ourselves, then the only remedy is:SALVATION IN JESUS CHRIST.You see pride in others and you, as C.S. Lewis says, and I loathe it. We simply do not like a prideful person. It is trouble, a pathway to wrong decisions, a force which prevents the ability to listen and learn. It is toxic, like poison in the body and it will eventually, EVENTUALLY destroy a man or woman. It destroys relationships and marriages. And all the while it wreaks human havoc, it perhaps becomes more than ever one of the things:THE LORD HATES!Our political leaders today are extremely prideful. Many of our religious leaders are as well. Perhaps the most prideful are educators, or learned people. The more in the head, the less in the heart. The Holy Spirit can knock at the heart's door, but there is no heart key to let it in. That is because pride dwells therein and pride is the ultimate destroyer.It is all well and good for us to take satisfaction in accomplishments, including our own intellects, physical or emotional abilities. We can be fulfilled in what we do, and take pleasure in our accomplishments. We can have confidence in ourselves without stepping over the line into the dastardly world of pride. God indeed is a God of love, but we are clearly told that GOD HATES (incredibly opposite) pride. If not now, the time will come when it will bring down any person no matter how high up or powerful. May God melt you, show you yourself when pride rules and lead you away from that short path of that destruction. I know one who could do that. That one is a:CARPENTER FROM NAZARETH!

No Sprint is complete unless it includes a retrospective and a review.  We need to examine what we accomplished and how we got here.  Those same considerations are important to make a part of our personal lives.  A personal retrospective and review are well-suited for natural pauses in our lives, such as Holidays or a vacation.  The new year is also right around the corner.  A resolution based on our desires rather than avoiding bad things is more likely to succeed. An Agile Year-End A sprint in the world of Agile methodologies includes a review and a retrospective.  The first is where we "show-off" or examine what was completed.  The latter is where we look for ways to improve, either by doing more good or less harm. Then, we can apply these to our results from the past year.  The idea of a sprint is that we set goals, attempt to achieve them, evaluate, adjust, and repeat.  All of those steps are excellent for our personal goals. The Personal Retrospective The essential factor of a retrospective is to find ways to improve.  In our life, we need to define what that looks like.  We can aim to be happier, less stressed, healthier, wiser, make more money, or all of the above.  With these goals in mind, we can perform a personal retrospective.  I recommend an hour or two at least to list out what went well last year, what went off the rails, and then changes you can make next year.  The above may seem like an over-architected solution.  However, it is not.  That time spent will help you walk through your entire year.  It will help to have a calendar or similar tool that can refresh your mind about things done, attempted, and achieved. The best thing to spark this process is a list of your goals from the prior year.  If you do not, then make one for the year ahead.  A good list of objectives and achievements provides you a perfect metric for what you did right or where you stumbled.  These form the basis for change in the year ahead.  While doing this exercise at the end of the year is not critical, it is good to do it when you have some time away from the grind.  Allow yourself to dream a bit of what better days would look like.  Then you can line up some goals to get to those better days.

In this next gallery, the thin, red, vinyl line continues along the perimeter. Though most of the gallery is white, Bordowitz has painted a large section in the right-hand corner with red-ish brown paint, a color calling to mind a dark terracotta or rust, or blood. The color extends from the corner of the gallery to fill about one-third of the two adjacent walls. It stops abruptly with a sharp, clean edge. In this corner stands a short white sculpture of stacked paper plates coated in a thick white plaster. The sculpture stands about 3 feet or 1 meter tall, comparable to the height of a young child, on a disc-shaped platform of the same dark terracotta color. The platform's rim is encircled by the same red line. The sculpture has a wide base and narrows at the top. The tip resembles a large bone protruding from the pile of plates. On the walls around the sculpture the artist has made a freehand drawing interpreting Scottish philosopher David Hume's essays “A Treatise of Human Nature: Book II: The Passions.” The drawing is based on a diagram Bordowitz made in his notebook. The artist's diagram consists of big, scratchy, all-caps text and wobbly curves and lines in mostly royal blue, with flashes of white and gray. An infinity symbol hovers at the center of the drawing, about two-thirds of the way up the wall. Its curves are an overlapping of gray and blue and its intersection point is exactly where the walls meet. Down the center, bisecting the halves of the infinity symbol, a wobbly line extends from just above the symbol to about a third of the way to the floor, stopping at the top of the paper-plate sculpture. Here, the vertical line diverges into two wobbly horizontal lines extending about halfway across both walls' dark terracotta sections, creating an upside down T. At the top point of the upside down T, a skull is drawn, like the head of a scepter. Above the skull, near the gallery ceiling, the artist has written SYMPATHY, in a scratchy, white all-caps with royal blue accents. A series of words encircle the infinity symbol's loops, including the words PRIDE, SELF, LOVE, and OTHER. Cradled inside both loops are the words HUMILITY and HATE. Along the T's spine, the artist has written the word SENSATION. At the end points of the upside-down T's horizontal line are written the words AGREEABLE and UNEASY. In the open space between the infinity symbol and the horizontal line are royal blue left and right handprints with white specks. The handprints, nearly parallel to one another, look at each other from their respective walls. On the left terracotta section, along its edge, a column of individual scribbles transitions from dark royal blue, to a brighter royal blue, to turquoise, to white, like a vertical color scale. In this same section, the words “BOOK II OF THE PASSIONS DAVID HUME A TREATISE OF HUMAN UNDERSTANDING NATURE” are written in large, all-caps, royal blue and surround the curve of the infinity symbol. The word “UNDERSTANDING” is struck through. On the right terracotta section, a column of word pairs run along the edge. The words in each pair are separated by greater than and less than symbols between them, resembling butterfly wings. The word pairs are: VICE>

There are two things that you can be sure of in January and both of them make the More Or Less team want to scream. Firstly, Oxfam put out their ‘x number of billionaires hold the same wealth as the poorest half of the world’ statistic, a comparison which, as said in the past, does not make sense. The second head-banger is ‘Blue Monday’, the formula that supposedly tells us that the third Monday in January is when people are at their saddest. Each year it appears on different press releases promoting different products, but there is no science to it at all. Also, could sending a GIF be a crime? GIFs – online flashing animations – can induce seizures in those with photosensitive epilepsy. So is knowingly sending a GIF to a person with epilepsy a crime? We find out about a case testing exactly that question. And why do people believe conspiracy theories which cast doubt on the official narratives of some very serious events - from the Holocaust to 9/11, Diana to JFK, Lockerbie to Sandy Hook?
