Ambulance personnel across the country are currently considering Labour Court proposals aimed at resolving a long-running pay dispute within the National Ambulance Service.    Following years of campaigning, and a 24-hour strike by frontline staff last month, SIPTU and Unite have recommended that members accept proposals which include pay increases for a number of ambulance grades and protections for existing terms and conditions. The recommendations will now go to a ballot of union members.     To discuss what's on offer, what it means for ambulance personnel, and the mood among staff, Alan Morrissey was joined by Midwest Irish Ambulance Representative Council member and Clooney-Quin native Orla Considine, along with Ennis Ambulance Base Shop Steward Finola Croke. Talks at the Labour Court aimed at resolving a pay dispute at the National Ambulance Service will resume this morning. SIPTU has described the discussions as "difficult" and said agreement has not yet been reached. "The Labour Court has asked the parties to return today as a final opportunity to try to resolve the dispute before next week's industrial action, which would involve a 72 hour work stoppage amid an ongoing work to rule according to the Union. The dispute over pay and conditions stems from accusations that the HSE has failure to implement the pay scale recommendations of an independent report in 2020. For their part, Paramedics, Emergency Medical Technicians and Ambulance staff claim the scope and duties of their roles has expanded in recent times but the pay has not matched this change. To find out the latest, Daragh Dolan was joined by Clooney-Quin based Orla Considine who is on the Midwest Irish Ambulance Representative Council.

A Clare-based Irish Ambulance Representative Council representative says the prospect of ambulance workers carrying out a 72-hour work stoppage should be a "concern for everybody". Trade unions representing National Ambulance Service staff have confirmed that next week's planned 48-hour strike won't be going ahead following yesterday's Labour Court talks. Members are seeking the implementation of a 2020 report's recommendations around updating salary scales to reflect changes in responsibilities and workload. Unions have confirmed plans remain in place for a 72-hour work stoppage on May 26th, and Midwest IARC representative, Clooney Quin native Orla Considine, says this isn't taken lightly.

In this episode of the St Emlyn's Podcast, we're joined by Nigel Ruddell, Medical Director of the Northern Ireland Ambulance Service, recorded live at the BASICS Conference. This is a conversation about Helicopter Emergency Medical Services (HEMS) — but not in the way you might expect. It's not really about aircraft. It's about people. Nigel talks us through the long, often uncomfortable journey to building Air Ambulance Northern Ireland. From early fundraising attempts in the 2000s, through the influence and legacy of Dr John Hinds, to the eventual partnership between charity and the statutory ambulance service that made a doctor–paramedic HEMS model possible. We explore: • Why the helicopter isn't the intervention — the team is • The charity–NHS partnership model in Northern Ireland • Geography, rurality, and the realities of serving 1.9 million people • Dispatch challenges and the use of video triage (including the GoodSAM platform) • Cross-border working with the National Ambulance Service of Ireland • The cultural work required to convince colleagues that HEMS is not a “Cinderella service” • Humility, leadership, and the people who quietly build systems We also reflect on John Hinds's legacy and how his passion catalysed change, including the significance of the Delta 7 callsign. This is a thoughtful conversation about system design, pre-hospital care, and what it actually takes to introduce enhanced critical care capability into a region that has never had it before. If you enjoy thinking about pre-hospital medicine, trauma systems, and the future of emergency care, you may also want to look at: the IncrEMentuM Conference and Tactical Trauma And if you want to go deeper into the evidence behind the conversations we have on this podcast, explore MedPod Learn — now hosting nearly 5,000 medical podcast episodes with linked multiple-choice questions to support structured learning. First on Scene, Last to Heal: Emergency Workers and Fatal Collisions goes behind the scenes with the men and women of An Garda Síochána, the National Ambulance Service and the fire service as they share stories about fatal collisions on Ireland's roads, and how that impacts their way of thinking. Produced and presented by Alex Rowley, a young journalism student from Wicklow and IMRO-nominated broadcaster, it's inspired by the contrasting ways different members of the emergency services deal with their trauma. Some choose to open up to friends, while for others, it's as if nothing bothers them.Due to a spike in road deaths in recent years, the topic has been high up in the news agenda, and rightly so, but every bank holiday we hear appeals from high-ranking Gardaí, Government Ministers and the RSA. Rarely, do we hear from those who actually deal with these collisions and see the devastation firsthand. In the documentary, Paramedics Clodagh Murphy and Paul Malone, based in Waterford, tell us about the trends they see in responding to collisions and why they're always keeping their own family members in the back of their mind. The documentary also goes on patrol with Gardaí Leanne McCarthy and Ken Driscoll of the Roads Policing Unit in Abbeyfeale, Co. Limerick. Ken bravely opens up about how it feels to break the news of a death to a family, comparing it to handing someone an “explosive device”.We also speak with Sub-Officer Stephen Connolly from Monasterevin Fire Brigade in Co. Kildare, who speaks of the challenges faced by on-call emergency workers, who service their local community first and foremost. All emergency workers in the documentary have pleaded with people to put down their mobile phones, put on their seatbelts, follow speed limits, and not take drugs or alcohol when using the roads this Bank Holiday Weekend.Analysis from Clinical Psychologist, Dr. Malie Coyne, contextualises the issue, and further hammers home the importance of looking out for our frontline workers.

Paramedics not allowed keep respond car at their homesParamedics have been informed they are no longer allowed to keep their respond car parked at their own homes as this would be considered Benefit in Kind and the workers should be paying extra tax.The rule, reportedly signed off last Friday, means paramedics will now have to leave their vehicles at a central location after their shift and drive home in their own cars — even if they're on call the next day. Pat Buckley, Sinn Féin TD for Cork East, called the policy "bonkers." Speaking to Patricia Messinger on C103, he explained how this impacts emergency response times. "If there's a call in the middle of the night, instead of responding immediately, the paramedic has to drive to the central location, pick up the vehicle, and then head to the emergency. It's penny wise, pound foolish," he said.Deputy Buckley also pointed out that paramedics often go above and beyond, even using their vehicles off-duty to help in emergencies. The policy, he fears, will not only discourage people from joining the National Ambulance Service but could also push current paramedics to reconsider their roles.Pat Buckley told C103 this isn't just a local issue. If the directive comes from Revenue, it's a nationwide problem. Deputy Buckley said following changes to the ambulance service in 2013, locals have relied heavily on paramedics who go the extra mile.Listen Back to Cork East Deputy Pat Buckley speaking to Patricia Messinger on C103's Cork Today Show here Hosted on Acast. Dr Eric Nelson and Molly Klarman are bridging health access gaps in Haiti through their revolutionary pediatric telemedicine and medication delivery service. Born out of their fiery dedication to making a difference, they share their inspiring journey, their motivations, and the personal experiences that fuel their passion. Unpack the logistics of MotoMeds with us, a model that draws inspiration from the food delivery business, but with a twist - it's about delivering life-saving medical care. We examine how they're making strides with a limited range of clinical practice and their roadmap to a digital future. Learn about their development of an electronic decision support tool and how they're harnessing lessons from Silicon Valley to drive design initiatives and streamline their operation. Finally, get a glimpse of the potential of the MotoMeds model in varying healthcare systems. We discuss how it could create a shift in non-emergency cases away from ambulance services, with a special nod to the National Ambulance Service in Ghana. Hear how their work is shaking up healthcare delivery in low-resourced settings, and how their methods could become a blueprint for NGOs and governments worldwide. This enlightening conversation is a testament to how innovation and dedication can disrupt and revolutionize healthcare access.Check out the shownotes to learn more!__________________Click here to join the exclusive GHP online community!Support the PodcastClick here to send in a one time or monthly donationJoin the Podcast Mailing list: https://www.globalhealthpursuit.com/mailing-list Make sure to follow Hetal on LinkedIn, Instagram and Facebook!Email her at hetal@globalhealthpursuit.com.Thank you so much. Méadú gach bliain ar amfhreagartha otharcharr ó bhí 2019 ann. Emergency ambulance responses in life-threatening situations have increased every year since 2019, according to new figures published by the National Ambulance Service. Tá méadú tagtha gach bliain ó bhí 2019 ann ar amfhreagartha otharcharr i gcásanna ina bhfuil an t-othar i mbaol báis, de réir figiúirí nua atá foilsithe ag an tSeirbhís Náisiúnta Otharcharr. Last year, patients in Category 1 - that is, patients at risk of death - waited, on average, for 26 minutes for an ambulance. Anuraidh, bhí othair i gCatagóir 1 - is é sin, othair atá i mbaol báis - ag fanacht, ar an meán, ar feadh 26 noiméad ar otharcharr. In the west of the country last year, one person in that category waited for 22 hours. In iarthar na tíre anuraidh, bhí duine amháin sa gcatagóir sin ag fanacht ar feadh 22 uair. And at the beginning of 2023, someone in the south of the country was waiting thirteen hours. Agus ag tús 2023, bhí duine i ndeisceart na tíre ag fanacht trí huaire déag. Newly published figures show that 890 people died last year while waiting for an ambulance - 294 in Leinster; 306 people in the south of the country and 290 people in the west of the country. Léirítear sna figiúirí nuafhoilsithe go bhfuair 890 duine bás anuraidh le linn dóibh a bheith ag fanacht ar otharcharr - 294 duine i gCúige Laighean; 306 duine i ndeisceart na tíre agus 290 duine in iarthar na tíre. Last year, in the case of 34% of cases, it took more than an hour before the patient was transferred into the care of the hospital from the ambulance, due to overcrowding in the hospitals. Anuraidh, i gcás 34 faoin gcéad de chásanna, ghlac sé breis agus uair a chloig sula raibh an t-othar aistrithe isteach faoi chúram an ospidéil ón lucht otharcharr, de bharr róphlódaithe sna hospidéil. Pedar Toiblin, leader of Auntú, received these figures about parliamentary issues. Fuair Peadar Toiblín, ceannaire Aontú, na figiúirí seo faoi cheisteanna parlaiminte. In response to the questions put to them, the National Ambulance Service - which is under the command of the Health Service Executive - said that they have 280 ambulances in their fleet. Mar fhreagra ar na ceisteanna a cuireadh faoina bráid dúirt an tSeirbhís Náisiúnta Otharcharr - atá faoi cheannasaíocht Fheidhmeannacht na Seirbhíse Sláinte - go bhfuil 280 otharcharr sa bhflít acu. They said that so far this year, 72% of ambulances have cleared out of their hospitals within an hour of landing with a patient on board. Dúirt siad gur go dtí seo i mbliana, go bhfuil 72 faoin gcéad d'otharchairr glanta amach óna hospidéil taobh istigh d'uair a chloig dóibh a bheith tuirlingthe le hothar ar bord. In the west of the country last year, one person in that category waited 22 hours for an ambulance In iarthar na tíre anuraidh, bhí duine amháin sa gcatagóir sin ag fanacht ar feadh 22 uair ar otharcharr

Fear caillte tar éis dó titim le haill i gCo Shligigh. A man over 60 years of age died while hillwalking around Sruth in Anaird in Glencarthy, Co Sligo, yesterday evening. Bhásaigh fear os cionn 60 bliain d'aois agus é ag cnocadóireacht thart ar Shruth in Aghaidh an Aird i nGleann an Chairthe, Co Shligigh, tráthnóna inné. It is understood that the man was from Co Galway and was on holiday in the area with his partner. Tuigtear gurbh as Co na Gaillimhe an fear agus go raibh sé ar saoire sa cheantar in éineacht lena chéile. A spokesman for the local mountain rescue team said it appears the man was thrown in his direction, his foot slipped at the top of a cliff and he fell into a stream. Dúirt urlabhraí ó fhoireann tarrthála sléibhe na háite gur cosúil gur cuireadh an fear dá threo, gur bhain sciorradh coise dó ag barr altáin agus gur thit sé i sruthán. Rescuers were immediately called and took the man out of the water before they reached the place. Cuireadh fios ar lucht tarrthála láithreach agus thug siad an fear as an uisce a thúisce a bhain siad an áit amach. Medics treated the man on the limb but he was pronounced dead a short time later. Chuir lucht míochaine cóir leighis ar an bhfear ar an mball ach fógraíodh go gairid ina dhiaidh sin go raibh sé éagtha.
