Dan sits down with Philadelphia music community icon and long-standing champion Derek Dorsey. He's booked and promoted thousands of shows at The Fire, Underground Arts, The Blockley, and Electric Factory, if you played in Philadelphia in the last 25 years, you worked with Derek at some point.  In Part 1, Derek reminisces about growing up in Overbrook, early concerts, his love of music, and his early career as a social worker working with at-risk youth in Philadelphia. In an attempt to raise money via a benefit concert, Derek got his first taste of being part of the business from behind the scenes, and the rest is history. Dan and Derek talk about the Philly music scene in the 90s and early 00s, the bands in Derek's orbit (Town Hall, June Rich, Huffamoose, etc), and how he made his career, even if (according to him) he had no idea what he was doing.  Derek was diagnosed with a very rare version of trigeminal neuralgia, a neurological disease that attacks the body with sharp, sudden bursts of pain. It has been treatable to varying degrees of success, but the illness is chronic and incurable. Derek and friends started a foundation called 'We Live On', which helps Derek and his family, as well as provides assistance and resources to others who are going through similar situations. They host benefit concerts, including two upcoming ones, both at Ardmore Music Hall: Sunday, March 30th with Mason Porter, Frog Holler and Travel Lanes, and on Saturday, May 3rd, We Live On presents The Soul Of Quincy Jones: York Street Hustle and Special Guests. As all blind and visually impaired people know, some of our most enriching experiences come from interactions with like-minded peers. Overbrook School for the Blind, a renowned school for the blind and visually impaired in the Philadelphia region, recognize just how important these opportunities are for blind and visually impaired youth. To fulfill this need, they created the AmeriCorps mentorship program, which connects youth mentors in higher education, or those succeeding in the workplace, to students exploring their path of possibilities ahead of them. Join White Canes Connect contributor Simon Bonenfant, as he sits down with Bethany Johnson, Program Director, as well as Dauad Yasar, student mentor, as they discuss how the program was formed, benefits to both mentors and mentees, and more.  From the AmeriCorps Website: “The OSB AmeriCorps Program improves the work-readiness of visually impaired Pennsylvanians ages 16-28. OSB AmeriCorps will enroll 16 visually impaired Pennsylvanians as AmeriCorps members who will deliver a work readiness curriculum and serve as mentors to 60 visually impaired Pennsylvanians per year. This AmeriCorps program is unique in its design. AmeriCorps members and the students they serve are close in age and share the experience of living with visual impairments. This creates especially powerful near-peer mentoring relationships and develops work-readiness of 60 young Pennsylvanians and the AmeriCorps members. In each session, lessons and virtual mentoring will be delivered during afterschool and evening hours to be most accessible to students. Lessons will be conducted in group settings, maintaining the small student to instructor ratio. To meet student needs, AmeriCorps members may offer lessons multiple times per week to allow students to attend the lessons that fit their schedule. Lessons will be 60- to 90- minutes each, and be a combination of presentation, discussion and reflection activities.”  Interested in applying for the AmeriCorps next step skills program? In the last episode, we examined the uplifting words that Frederick Douglass used to describe what it was like to be around Abraham Lincoln, when he simply said that there was safety in his atmosphere.  In this episode, as well as in the next one, we're going to take a look at two instances in my life when I came face to face with what it was like to be in someone's presence who truly had safety in his atmosphere. They were both quite powerful in somewhat different ways. The first one began at the end of the summer of 1965 when I had just begun eleventh grade in high school. It was time to get ready for school as well as for the upcoming 76ers season. As you may know, my father was the founder as well as the General Manager of the team, and he was stepping up his efforts to try to find a player named Wally Jones who played for the Baltimore Bullets. The talented guard hadn't shown up for training camp, and nobody had any idea where he was. The papers said he had legal problems and that they were getting worse. My father opened up talks with Baltimore about a possible trade. Wally would be a tremendous addition to the team. Besides being a star player, he was also a Philadelphia hometown hero, having gone to Overbrook High School, and as well as Villanova University. As he was negotiating on the trade, my dad asked Vince Miller to get involved. Vince was Wilt Chamberlain's closest friend. They had grown up together, actually in the same neighborhood as Wally, and all three of them had gone to Overbrook.   Vince was a popular figure throughout the city and was extremely well-connected. He'd also become very tight with my father and although he wasn't officially with the team's organization, he was around a lot. There were rumors that my father was grooming him to take a position in the front office soon, and then maybe someday, take over the top spot. Vince went to work, but after ten days, there was still no news. Even so, my father decided to roll the dice and on September 22, 1965, he made a trade with the Bullets and secured the rights to Wally Jones, who was still missing. The move hit the newspapers pretty hard and they were all critical of the trade. According to them, Jones's life was in shambles and he was now an actual fugitive from justice. Nobody knew if he was still in the country or even if he was still alive, for that matter. Finally, Vince got some news. He told my father he thought he knew where Jones was hiding and might be able to get a message to him. My father said to tell Wally that he had looked into his legal problems and was certain he could take care of them all. He wanted Wally to get in touch with him as soon as possible. Everything would be alright once he let my father go to work for him. The word went out.  Then, the following Saturday, as I was having our usual after-synagogue lunch with my parents, our front doorbell rang. I got up to get it. When I opened the door, a disheveled twentysomething black guy was standing there with a small suitcase in his hand. He looked like a bum. “Is this Ike Richman's house?” he asked me. “Yeah,” I said, mildly apprehensive. “Is he here? My name's Wally Jones. I heard he might be able to help me.” I couldn't believe my eyes. This was such a major development that had seemingly come out of nowhere. “Sure,” I said. “Hold on a second.” I went and told my father, who dropped everything and came right to the door. “Hello, Mr. Richman,” Wally said, extending his hand. “I'm not sure if I—” “Wally, great to see you,” my father said, shaking his hand. “I'm so glad you came. Good choice! Come on in!” They looked at each other for a brief moment. “Now, listen,” my father said, getting right to the point. “I know all about your situation. I've looked into it thoroughly, and it's really not all that bad. We can definitely take care of it.” Wally looked surprised as if things had gotten off to a much rosier start than he had hoped. “Come on back, and let's have a talk,” my father said, putting his hand on Wally's shoulder. He led him down the hallway toward his office. I heard the door close, and that always meant business. From his tone, I knew immediately that everything was going to be all right. I'd seen this kind of thing all my life. People would come to him in trouble and they would leave relieved. My father had a great reputation as a brilliant problem solver, with a real genius for finding creative solutions that worked for everyone. He was also an astute judge of character, with wit, charm and an intelligent sense of humor thrown into the mix. He was known for his soft touch. He would put people at ease, and then appeal to their better natures. And most importantly, they felt safe with him. He had an unmistakable aura of power and authority, and intuitively, you knew you could trust him. If you had a serious problem, he was definitely the guy you wanted to see. I had been planning to go out that afternoon to play ball with some friends, but I decided to wait until the meeting with Wally was over. This was a huge deal. Stories about him had dominated the news for weeks. Everybody knew if we got him, it would be a major coup. And at that moment, there were only three people in the whole world who knew what was going on, and I was one of them. I wasn't going anywhere. I had some homework to do over the weekend, so I got my papers together and set myself up at the kitchen table. I could see the door to my father's office from there. I took out my psychology homework. It was the first lesson of the year, and we were studying the basic human emotions of fear and safety. The assignment was to describe two recent times when you felt real fear, and then explain what happened that made you feel safe again. The teacher was a super creative guy who a few years later ended up becoming an intellectual hippie. As a prompt, he had given us the statement Frederick Douglass had made when he was asked what it was like to be around Abraham Lincoln and he replied with elegant simplicity, “There was safety in his atmosphere.” It was the first time I had ever heard it and I found the idea to be comforting as well as intriguing. This was actually going to be a fairly easy assignment for me because the two major brushes I'd had with fear were fairly recent and still very fresh in my mind. The first was at the beginning of that summer when one of my friends and I were driving to a Phillies baseball game. It was early evening, and we were in his family's small convertible, just the two of us. The weather was warm, and we had a few more hours of daylight, so we put the top down. We drove down Broad Street, and when we got to North Philadelphia, we started noticing that there were far more people on the sidewalks than usual.  Most of them were black, and they were all walking south, the same direction we were driving. As we drove on the size of the crowd kept getting larger and larger. It started to get unnerving because of the recent racial unrest in the country. It was still the early days of the civil rights movement and severe racial tension had become rampant in several major cities and Philadelphia was one of them. The very neighborhood we were driving through had been the scene of major riot a few months earlier where three hundred people were hospitalized. As a sign of the times, only two months later, the massive Watts riots broke out in Los Angeles and over thirty people were killed. As we drove on the crowds kept getting thicker and thicker. And I kept getting more and more nervous. Generally, I don't trust big crowds. I had been going to professional basketball games all my life with regular attendance of 10,000 people and I knew how quickly things can get out of hand. It can get ugly in a flash, turning the crowd into a mob. And once it starts, it's almost impossible to stop. Traffic had slowed to a crawl and people were everywhere. We had no idea what was going on, but we did know one thing. We were completely exposed—two white, affluent suburban teens sitting in an opened convertible, surrounded by a huge throng of black people. Under the wrong circumstances, we would be sitting ducks. But at the same time, we noticed something rather unusual. People were everywhere, but it was extremely quiet. In fact, it was almost silent. We were driving down Broad Street, which is a bustling six-lane avenue that runs the entire length of the city, and I don't think I even heard a horn honk. As we headed south, I noticed that a large, famous church on the left side of the street seemed to be the focus of the crowd. Everyone was walking toward it.  Once we finally got close enough where I could see what was really going on, all of my anxiety immediately vanished and I knew without question that we were safe. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was standing on the church's front landing, and everyone was staring at him. He wasn't giving a speech or anything. There wasn't even a microphone or podium. He was just standing there, standing for what he stood for. And everyone else was standing along with him. The moment was filled with unity, commitment, and nobility and it was absolutely obvious that nothing bad was going to happen. King had been touring the country, trying to cool everybody out, and had been on a two-day visit to the city. He had just spoken in the church. There wasn't nearly enough room for everyone, so after he finished, he came out to be with the people who couldn't get in.  By a wonderful twist of fate, we just happened to be driving by at that exact moment and got to witness it first-hand. As I sat at the kitchen table, I jotted down some quick notes for the essay. The profoundly moving event had only happened a few months earlier and had left an indelible impression on my memory. We all know that people can have a tremendous effect on each other. But here, just one person had brought out the best in thousands, just by the presence of his immense moral authority. The enormous group of people had become one unified force, and in a very small way, as we crept on by, we were a part of it.  My fear had been that the crowd could have turned angry, putting us in grave danger.  But the opposite had happened. As Dr. King stood there, having his silent communion with the thousand people who had enveloped him, to say there was safety in his atmosphere would be putting it mildly. The nobility of the human spirit is truly inspiring.          As I sat at the kitchen table, I finished making my notes and looked over at the door to my father's office. It was still closed. I decided to use the bathroom. It shared a wall with the office, so maybe I could hear what was going on in there. When I went in, I heard my father and Wally talking but I couldn't make out their words. Still, from their muffled voices, it was obvious they were into some pretty heavy stuff. Well, that's the end of this episode. We'll pick up the story again in the next one. As always, keep your eyes, mind and heart opened and let's get together in the next one.

This is Garrison Hardie with your CrossPolitic Daily Newsbrief for Thursday, November 3rd, 2022. Good to be back with you all, let’s get right into the news! https://www.cnbc.com/2022/11/02/fed-hikes-by-another-three-quarters-of-a-point-taking-rates-to-the-highest-level-since-january-2008.html Fed approves 0.75-point hike to take rates to highest since 2008 and hints at change in policy ahead The Federal Reserve on Wednesday approved a fourth consecutive three-quarter point interest rate increase and signaled a potential change in how it will approach monetary policy to bring down inflation. In a well-telegraphed move that markets had been expecting for weeks, the central bank raised its short-term borrowing rate by 0.75 percentage point to a target range of 3.75%-4%, the highest level since January 2008. The move continued the most aggressive pace of monetary policy tightening since the early 1980s, the last time inflation ran this high. Along with anticipating the rate hike, markets also had been looking for language indicating that this could be the last 0.75-point, or 75 basis point, move. The new statement hinted at that policy change, saying when determining future hikes, the Fed “will take into account the cumulative tightening of monetary policy, the lags with which monetary policy affects economic activity and inflation, and economic and financial developments.” Economists are hoping this is the much talked about “step-down” in policy that could see a rate increase of half a point at the December meeting and then a few smaller hikes in 2023. This week’s statement also expanded on previous language simply declaring that “ongoing increases in the target range will be appropriate.“ The new language read, “The Committee anticipates that ongoing increases in the target range will be appropriate in order to attain a stance of monetary policy that is sufficiently restrictive to return inflation to 2 percent over time.” Stocks initially rose following the announcement, but turned negative during Chairman Jerome Powell’s news conference as the market tried to gauge whether the Fed thinks it can implement a less restrictive policy that would include a slower pace of rate hikes to achieve its inflation goals. On balance, Powell dismissed the idea that the Fed may be pausing soon though he said he expects a discussion at the next meeting or two about slowing the pace of tightening. He also reiterated that it may take resolve and patience to get inflation down. The rate increase comes as recent inflation readings show prices remain near 40-year highs. A historically tight jobs market in which there are nearly two openings for every unemployed worker is pushing up wages, a trend the Fed is seeking to head off as it tightens money supply. Concerns are rising that the Fed, in its efforts to bring down the cost of living, also will pull the economy into recession. Powell has said he still sees a path to a “soft landing” in which there is not a severe contraction, but the U.S. economy this year has shown virtually no growth even as the full impact from the rate hikes has yet to kick in. At the same time, the Fed’s preferred inflation measure showed the cost of living rose 6.2% in September from a year ago – 5.1% even excluding food and energy costs. GDP declined in both the first and second quarters, meeting a common definition of recession, though it rebounded to 2.6% in the third quarter largely because of an unusual rise in exports. At the same time, housing demand has plunged as 30-year mortgage rates have soared past 7% in recent days. On Wall Street, markets have been rallying in anticipation that the Fed soon might start to ease back as worries grow over the longer-term impact of higher rates. The Dow Jones Industrial Average has gained more than 13% over the past month, in part because of an earnings season that wasn’t as bad as feared but also due to growing hopes for a recalibration of Fed policy. Treasury yields also have come off their highest levels since the early days of the financial crisis, though they remain elevated. The benchmark 10-year note most recently was around 4.09%. There is little if any expectation that the rate hikes will halt anytime soon, so the anticipation is just for a slower pace. Futures traders are pricing a near coin-flip chance of a half-point increase in December, against another three-quarter point move. https://thepostmillennial.com/bidens-cdc-replaces-word-woman-with-pregnant-person-in-flu-vaccine-guidance?utm_campaign=64487 Biden's CDC replaces word 'woman' with 'pregnant person' in flu vaccine guidance The US Centers for Disease Control (CDC) has removed the word woman from sections of its safety guidance on flu vaccines during pregnancy. According to the Daily Mail, gendered terms such as woman, women, mother and she/her pronouns were all erased from the Q & A section of the Flu Vaccine Safety and Pregnancy page in August of last year. The words were replaced with gender-neutral language such as “pregnant people” and the gender-neutral pronoun “their.” However, the words woman and mother still appear in other sections of the CDC website, such as the Vaccines During Pregnancy FAQ page. “Influenza is more likely to cause severe illness in pregnant people,” says the CDC. “Flu shots given during pregnancy help protect the ‘pregnant parent’ and the baby from flu.” Those advocating for the use of gender-neutral language in the healthcare setting argue that the intention is to ensure that everyone feels included. So for example because a tiny number of females who identify as men may become pregnant, the word woman should be removed from maternity care to include them. But feminist campaigners have suggested that the so-called inclusive language only appears to go one way. Ovarian cancer apparently now affects “people” not women, but prostate cancer still affects men. Healthline referred to “men” and “vulva-owners” last year on its HPV information pages. Meanwhile, MedicineNet.com kept the definition of male as “the sex that produces spermatozoa” but redefined female as being a complicated mix of chromosomal anomalies and gender identity. This has led some to speculate that this new inclusive language is not so much about being inclusive of everybody and more about ensuring that the word woman is never used in a way that excludes males who identify as women, while at the same time not reminding those males of their biology. The company has seen its stock plummet throughout 2022, shedding more than 70% of its value from the start of the year as it fell from over $330 per share in January to nearly $90 per share this week. The company's market cap has also plunged from its high last year, dropping from just over $1 trillion in August of 2021 to under $250 billion in November. Investors, meanwhile, are reported to be unhappy with the company's business direction, specifically founder Mark Zuckerberg's fixation on the virtual reality "metaverse," a project that has generated relatively little excitement outside of esoteric tech circles. Jim Tierney, an investment officer for Meta shareholder AllianceBernstein, told the Financial Times that, had any other company plowed so much money into a strategically dubious project, "you’d have activist investors writing letters, proposing alternative slates of directors, demanding change." David Older, an asset manager at Carmignac, claimed that Zuckerberg has been "tone-deaf to the investment community, doubling down on everything." “The timeline for the metaverse is very stretched. I don’t think you’re going to know if it is the right move for five or 10 years," he told FT. Meta, meanwhile, told FT that the company "value[s] the opinions of our investors and regularly engage with them to ensure we’re aware of their respective perspectives.” https://www.foxnews.com/us/kansas-woman-helmed-female-isis-battalion-sentenced-20-years-prison Kansas woman who helmed female ISIS battalion sentenced to 20 years in prison Allison Fluke-Ekren, a 42-year-old woman who grew up on a farm in Overbrook, Kansas, was sentenced to two decades in prison on Tuesday for leading the Khatiba Nusaybah, an all-female ISIS battalion in Raqqa, Syria. Fluke-Ekren's own children asked the judge to hand down the maximum sentence, 20 years, during victim impact statements at the hearing. Fluke-Ekren tearfully spoke to the judge before her sentencing. "I deeply regret my choices, but I also deeply sympathize with women abused and raped in Syria." In a plea deal made with the government, Fluke-Ekren admitted she translated and analyzed documents taken from the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi, Libya, after the terrorist attack on the facility in 2012. She tried to explain to the court some of her actions during the seven years she spent in Syria. "I was afraid of my conduct in Benghazi. I just didn’t see a way out." Fluke-Ekren also stressed that for most of her time in Syria, she had been just a mother, caring for her several children as well as other children and their mothers. Federal Judge Leonie Brinkema said she did not find Fluke-Ekren’s claims "wholly credible," saying she had "downplayed the impact" of her role in the Benghazi attack. The judge continued, "There’s no question you were providing material support for a terrorist organization," and emphasized several times during the hearing that was the crime for which Fluke-Ekren would be sentenced. Earlier in the sentencing hearing, two of Fluke-Ekren’s adult children gave emotional statements against their mother. Layla Ekren was visibly trembling in court for nearly an hour before she got her chance to tell Brinkema that her mother abused her as a child. She told the court about one instance in Syria when the family had lice, and her mother held her down on the ground and poured the medicine on her eyes in an apparent attempt to blind her. First Assistant U.S. Attorney Raj Parekh laid out the allegations against Fluke-Ekren in a sentencing memo, writing that she urged a woman to commit a suicide bombing and told others that her oldest son was born after she was raped by an American soldier as a way to gain favor with other terrorists. https://justthenews.com/world/middle-east/united-nations-orders-israel-get-rid-nuclear-weapons United Nations calls on Israel to get rid of nuclear weapons The United Nations General Assembly has passed a resolution calling on Israel to dispose of all of its alleged nuclear weapons and to put its nuclear sites under the jurisdiction of the International Atomic Energy Agency. The resolution, led by the UN's First Committee, which deals with nuclear disarmament, passed 152-5 over the weekend. Egypt submitted the resolution to the General Assembly in New York with sponsors including the Palestinian Authority and 19 countries including Morocco and the United Arab Emirates, the Jerusalem Post reported. The five countries that opposed the resolution were Canada, Israel, Micronesia, Palau and the United States. Twenty-four countries including European Union members, abstained from the vote. Israel has never admitted to having nuclear weapons but is widely believed to have them. Israel is one of the few U.N. member states that has not signed the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons Treaty. Iran is a signatory on the treaty, but international authorities believe that Tehran may already possess nuclear weapons. The resolution, on the "risk of nuclear proliferation in the Middle East," did not include Iran. The resolution calls on Israel "to accede to the Treaty without further delay, not to develop, produce, test or otherwise acquire nuclear weapons, to renounce possession of nuclear weapons and to place all its unsafe guarded nuclear facilities under the full scope of Agency safeguards as an important confidence-building measure among all States of the region and as a step toward enhancing peace and security." https://news.yahoo.com/dwyane-wades-ex-wife-fears-175220499.html Dwyane Wade's Ex-Wife Fears He's 'Pressuring' Zaya Into Name And Gender Change For Financial Gain Dwyane Wade’s ex-wife, Siohvaughn Funches-Wade, the star’s first wife and mother of his two oldest children, filed paperwork this week asking a judge to postpone their daughter Zaya’s sex change until she’s 18. In Funches-Wade plea to the judge, she claims the NBA star is exploiting their daughter for financial income. According to The Blast, Funches-Wade has sentiments about Zaya being pressured into the permanent change by Dwayne. “I have concerns that (Dwyane) may be pressuring our child to move forward with the name and gender change in order to capitalize on the financial opportunities that he has received from companies,” she said in her legal filing. The filing was in response to an August petition by Dwayne asking permission for Zaya to legally change her name from Zion Malachi Airamis Wade to Zaya Malachi Airamis Wade. Zaya came out as transgender in 2020 at the age of 12. Dwayne’s argument concerning his ex-wife’s petition was acknowledging that he is the legal guardian of their children and has the legal right to make decisions on his daughter’s behalf. Funch-Wade says during a conversation in April, Dwayne told her “a lot of money had been already made, and that additional money will be made in relation to our child’s name and gender issue.” Funch-Wade alleges her ex-husband only informs her of their children’s life choices out of ‘courtesy’ but states she wants to be hands-on in all decisions affecting the children. She also claims he is legally required to consult her on “major decisions affecting care, welfare, activities, health, education and religious upbringing.” Funch-Wade and Dwayne will have a hearing in December to determine whether Zaya can change her name and sex without her agreement.

First, Dom asks for McCormick's overall thoughts on the debates, asking whether McCormick agrees that candidates should be given a bit more of a leash when going back and forth with one another, with McCormick explaining his gratitude for having the opportunity to explain why he is a Pennsylvania guy, while pointing out to hypocrisies in the Dr. Mehmet Oz campaign. Then, Giordano offers McCormick kudos for the creativity of his line calling attention to Oz's flip-flopping while serving as a daytime television host, with McCormick explaining that Oz would only propagate liberal ideologies while on his show, shying away from any conservative issue. Then, after taking some calls asking the side question, Dom returns to a breakdown of the Senate race in Pennsylvania, discussing what candidates in the race need to do to gain traction both for their primary races, but for a potential run against a Democrat in a general election. Dom takes a call from a liberal caller by the name of Todd in Overbrook, who calls out Dave McCormick's motorcycle ad, with producer Dan surprisingly agreeing with the caller, telling why he thinks the ad is a bit cheesy but necessary. Dom agrees, explaining that McCormick is indeed a genuine Pennsylvania guy who probably rides a motorcycle, but there's something about the ad itself that seems a bit off. (Photo by Getty Images)
