I have been an entrepreneur from 2012-2017 building two products AddoDoc and Babygogo. After selling my company to SHEROES, I and my partner Nansi decided to start up again. But we felt unequipped in our skillset in 2018 to build a large company. We had known 0-1 journeys from our startups but lacked the experience of building 1-10 journeys. Hence was born The Neon Show (Earlier 100x Entrepreneur) to learn from founders and investors, the mindset to scale yourself and your company. This quest still keeps us excited even after 5 years and doing 200+ episodes. We welcome you to our journey to understand what goes behind building a super successful company. Every episode is done with a very selfish motive, that I and Nansi should come out as a better entrepreneur and professional after absorbing the learnings. __________________________________Visit our Website: https://neon.fund/Follow us on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/theneonshoww/Follow us on Twitter: https://twitter.com/TheNeonShowwFollow us on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/beneon/__________________________________Sponsor Shout OutLooking to build a differentiated tech startup with a 10X better solution? This week, Erin Everhart sits down with Pallav Tamaskar, Merrell's Chief Marketing Officer.
Per Pallav's website, he studied physics in college at KTH in Stockholm, Sweden (where I'm from). As a PhD student in the lab of Julio Fernandez at Columbia University, he studied the mechanics of protein folding and discovered that we can modulate this process to alter the elasticity of muscles. He then moved to Harvard University as a postdoc in the lab of Xiaowei Zhuang, where he used DNA to invent and build nanosensors that make it possible to see molecular movements. Since starting my lab at the Salk Institute in 2021, he has been excited about building a diverse and thriving research community, while training future leaders in biophysics. When I'm not in the lab, you can find him rock climbing, skiing, or learning to surf. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/fromwheredoesitstem/message

Pallav Kosuri uses a physics-inspired approach to discover fundamental mechanisms in biology. Pallav was born in Sweden and studied physics at the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm. After a short stint at CERN, he was awarded a Fulbright scholarship to pursue a Ph.D. in Biochemistry and Molecular Biophysics at Columbia University in New York. As a Ph.D. student in the lab of Dr. Julio M. Fernandez, Pallav co-invented an Atomic Force Microscope (US Patent 9,880,088) that can apply precisely calibrated forces to single protein molecules while measuring their mechanical response. Using this new microscope, he pioneered the use of mechanical force to study how disulfide bonds are formed during protein folding (Cell 2012).He also used this new microscope to investigate the molecular source of muscle elasticity and discovered a novel chemical mechanism for modulation of muscle stiffness (Cell 2014). After graduating, Pallav moved to Harvard University where he did a postdoc in the lab of Dr. Xiaowei Zhuang. At Harvard he invented ORBIT, a method that uses DNA origami to directly measure molecular rotation. Pallav used ORBIT to discover that RNA polymerase rotates in discrete ~35-degree steps during transcription (Nature 2019), and he is now building on this discovery to investigate transcriptional regulation at the single-molecule level. As an Assistant Professor at the Salk Institute, Pallav leads a diverse team of researchers to investigate fundamental principles of function in biomechanical systems, ranging from molecular machines to muscles, and with a focus on the mammalian heart. His group takes a cross-disciplinary approach that relies on innovation in biophysical and computational methods and imaging techniques. As part of these efforts, he is pioneering the use of single-molecule microscopy to map the architecture of the heart. With these studies, his vision is to create a framework for understanding the connections between genetics, structure, and mechanical function of the human body.
00:00 Intro 01:50 From a Bedroom, to a Basement 05:53 Hiring in 2005: a Big Challenge 10:26 Building Culture, Organically 11:10 Running a Global Company in India 14:16 Being Profitable and Bootstrapped 16:16 Three Near-Death Experiences 22:40 Milestones and the Path Ahead Pallav Nadhani founded FusionCharts at the age of 17 in an effort to earn himself some extra pocket money. He succeeded in doing so, and now, 17 years later, he has more pocket money than he knows what to do with. The data visualization company has over 28,000 customers as of December of 2019, some of which include Apple, Google, Facebook, Microsoft, Adobe, Walmart, NASA, and many, many more. In this video, Pallav explains how he built FusionCharts from his bedroom and turned it into a multi-million dollar company over the course of the last 17 years. From a Bedroom, to a Basement: Pallav Nadhani was able to run FusionCharts for three years on his own before he realized that he needed help. He onboarded his first employee, a friend of his cousins, and together they worked out of Pallav's bedroom for about a year and a half. By the end of this period, they were working with over 1,000 customers, and couldn't handle to workload on their own anymore. They shifted into a basement office and started hiring more employees. Hiring in 2005: a Big Challenge: Hiring wasn't a very easy thing to do for a startup in Calcutta in 2005. India's startup ecosystem was still in its infancy, and the startup ecosystem in Calcutta was nonexistent. Employees were hesitant to join the startup despite the fact that they were already working with a number of Fortune 500 companies. However, with time and experience, Pallav was able to assemble of solid team of engineers. Building Culture, Organically: Even as FusionCharts was scaling up and the startup was onboarding more and more employees, Pallav really didn't know anything about building strong culture. Instead, he simply focused on instilling values like pride in the company, a strong work ethic, and the desire to learn and grow on the job. As a result of these values, FusionCharts was able to establish a strong culture organically. Running a Global Company in India: Less than 1% of FusionCharts' customers are Indian. This is something that Pallav takes pride in, because going global from India was a pretty big challenge when FusionCharts was first starting out. In spite of this, FusionCharts has been able to build quality products that are good enough not only for India, but also for the world. What is more, they have done so as a bootstrapped, profitable company from day 1. Being Profitable and Bootstrapped: Because FusionCharts has always been profitable and bootstrapped, they have very rarely struggled with money problems. In fact, the biggest money they have faced is a surplus of funds. The challenge for them has been to figure out what to do with these funds. Part of the reason that they are able to be profitable and bootstrapped is that FusionCharts is a very lean company: they have 68 employees serving 28,000 customers!

We've created tools and technology for our own comfort since humanity began developing toward better living situations. Humans, on the other hand, have harmed the ecosystem as a result of their ongoing production of new tools. Other creatures have to suffer from numerous tragedies as a result of people. Climate Change and Carbon Footprints are the two most major human-caused calamities. Climate change is inescapable in today's world. The temperature in the cosmos altered from time to time even before civilization. Nations have been divided depending on their economic circumstances, with emerging countries suffering an additional overpopulation problem. We had an insightful conversation with Ms. Rashi Mehta, who represents the Carbon Initiative Forum, in this edition of All Fingers and Thumbs. The group is doing its part to raise awareness about carbon footprints and climate change. They are assisting us in understanding the influence of our lifestyle on climate change and how we may help to improve our world and preserve future generations. JobTok: Level Up with Career Growth and Job Hunt Tips From High Achievers
If you work for a few years in the corporate world, you might have realised that the working world is divided into two kinds of people, generalists and specialists. And while it might seem that being a generalist gives you maximum flexibility, and maybe even the chance of getting to the top as CEO, the reality is that companies don't really run and cannot actually run without the help of a strong cast of specialists, HR people, lawyers, finance people, facilities, and maybe to an extent, even sales. And as such, specialist careers could well be a lower risk way of building a career, since these skills kind of always remain in demand in one way or the other. But on the other hand, it might seem very daunting to build a career like this, how does one stick to one thing for 20, 30, maybe even 40 years? What could possibly keep one motivated to stay in the same function for long enough to be valued and indispensable to the corporate world? Well, today we are speaking with Pallav Patni, who has spent his entire 20-year career so far in finance, and in fact, focused on the consumer goods industry. So we are going to ask him, what keeps him motivated and challenged and what are the lessons he would like to share from all of those years, building a career in a specialised function. Today's episode is part of our Micro-SaaS edition of the Trends Series.Micro-SaaS NewsletterThis is a story about how a 16 Yr Old's quest for pocket money lead to a multi-million dollar software business. , Based out of Calcutta in 2002, Pallav needed all the extra cash he could get to spend at the Bowling Alleys. He came across an opportunity to write a technical article and get paid for it. He set out to write the longest article possible since it paid by the number of words. That technical article would garner enough interest that Pallav would soon be working on the first version of the product which we today know as Fusion Charts. Fusion Charts is a charting tool for developers to use for their websites & apps. Back in 2002, the graphs and charts that we take for granted in our programs like excel today weren't really that common. The existing solutions had limited functionality and poor aesthetics. That's the problem that Pallav set out to solve in 2002.If you think about it, he was the OG in the whole Niche Software game, what we today also refer to as Micro-SaaS. Going through Pallav's journey makes you realize he did a bunch of innovative things back in the day which we now assume as part of the basic playbook. For example, Content Marketing at Scale, Optimizing for Time to First Value for the User etc.At its peak, Fusion Charts had revenues of $10M/year with extremely high profit margins. However, the journey wasn't all smooth sailing for Pallav. There were periods in the entire journey where the growth stalled and the company saw heavy attrition. In true entrepreneurial spirit, Pallav rebuilt and made a comeback. This year, Fusion Charts was acquired by Iderra Inc of the US.We go through the journey of building Fusion Charts while going deeper into topics such as content marketing, customer support and close it out with a discussion on Bootstrapped vs Venture Funded paths of entrepreneurship. If you have any aspirations of building a technology product company, you don't want to miss this one.Pallav's TwitterCharts.com - Pallav's New VentureEmail us at theindiandream20@gmail.com
