The widespread use of NSAIDs like ibuprofen (Advil) and naproxen (Aleve) in ultramarathon running is alarming due to the health risks associated with kidney disease, electrolyte imbalance, and other factors. NSAIDs exacerbate some of the stresses of endurance sport to dangerous levels and have no proven performance benefit, yet changing public perception is a challenge. In this episode we break down why NSAIDs are harmful, what we can do as a community to protect athlete health, and viable alternatives to painkillers. Today I talked to Jerry Pannone about his new book Survive: Why We Do What We Do (John Hunt, 2022) Abraham Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs model is famous, but more so the 5-layer model than the 8-layer model he eventually arrived at. Why the later addition of knowledge and understanding, aesthetics and transcendence as needs in Maslow's model? The answer is that balanced out the 4 of the 5 original needs more focused on overcoming deficiencies, with four needs focused on personal growth. Indeed, a 2011, 163-country survey conducted in 2011, after Maslow's death, concluded that respect was vital. As today's guest suggests, the reason may be that respect encompasses both our need to have our career achievements be appreciated, and our selfhood to be valued as well. With gaining respect, the two strands of what we have done and who we are can triumphantly come together. Jerry Pannone has had a long career in music, as an artist, composer as well as in teaching music in the San Francisco Bay area. At the Ruth Asawa School of the Arts, Jerry taught courses in music, ethics and critical thinking. Dan Hill, PhD, is the author of ten books and leads Sensory Logic, Inc. Mike Pannone is my guest on the podcast this week and he gives us some self-preservation tips that he's learned from his years in U.S. Marine Reconnaissance, Army Special Forces (Green Beret) and 1st SFOD-D (Delta Force).
"Ryan": Ryan Pannone is currently the Head Coach of the GLeague team Birmingham Squadron and already has almost 20 years of coaching experience when he started as a young coach in High School. Shortly after he started to work as an Assistant for David Thorpe as a Player Development coach and quickly realized his passion. Throughout his career he had plenty of responsibilities as a young and aspiring Assistant Coach in Foshan, China which lead him to becoming an Assistant in Hanau, Germany later. He also was a player development coach and coaching staff member at Hapoel Jerusalem as well as a Head Coach in Prievidza, Slovakia. In today's episode Ryan and me talked about many different parts of his career but mostly about the art of how to build a career by being persistent and focusing on opportunities instead of paychecks. Ryan walked me through the different situations he faced in his career and how he never put money over gaining new knowledge! Ryan went through plenty of different coaching stations that prepared him for his jobs going forward and made him a better coach and person in the long-run. We also touched on the importance of having great mentorship, which in his case it was definitely the case with David Thorpe who guided him early on and gave him ownership as well as credibility as a reliable player development coach. This conversation is eye-opening in many regards but mostly for young and aspiring coaches who are looking for guidance in their pursuit of a career. Enjoy! Abstract: Mutations of PTPN11, the gene coding for the Src homology 2 domain-containing phosphatase 2 (SHP2), cause childhood leukemias and developmental disorders. SHP2 inhibitors targeting the catalytic site or an allosteric pocket lack specificity or are ineffective on pathogenic variants. In addition, several data indicate that increased association with cognate proteins, through its SH2 domains, rather than enhanced catalytic activity, is the main effect of mutations causing hyperactivation of SHP2-mediated signaling. We developed peptide-based molecules with low nM affinity to the N-SH2 domain and high specificity. These molecules bind to pathogenic variants of SHP2 with an affinity up to 20 times higher than to the wild-type protein, in contrast to allosteric inhibitors, and were able to revert the effects of a pathogenic SHP2 mutation in zebrafish embryos. Our results provide a novel route for SHP2-targeted therapies and a tool to investigate the role of protein-protein interactions in the function of SHP2. Copy rights belong to original authors. Andrews begins with a discussion of Bo Bichette's interview with Sportsnet's David Singh, and the perception that this delay will anger the shortstop enough to leave as soon as he can. This is silly, and A.J. explains why, as well as assures Bo that his time is coming. A spot just needs to open. The second half is focused on Thomas Pannone's journey to get back to the major leagues, but while the shine is already off his performance, A.J. is more incredulous that Nick Kingham was DFA'd in order to make room for Pannone. With other more palatable options to send packing (Hi Derek Law!), the host expresses her displeasure at the overthrow of the Sultan of Salami. A solid series against Tampa Bay gives way to some grappling with a return on today's episode!Ryan Andrews begins by looking at the performances of the Blue Jays' rookie starters during the series against the Rays. Andrews notes the struggles Sean Reid-Foley had in maintaining control of his electric stuff in what will likely be his final start of the season. Contrasting that with Thomas Pannone's steady performance and it becomes clear what the 2019 pecking order is. Andrews also notes that while Pannone had a tough situation mentally on the mound in the third inning, coming through that may serve him well moving forward. The second segment discusses Ryan Borucki's game effort against Blake Snell and details facets where the lefty can improve as he heads into an off-season where he knows he will be an MLB starter. Andrews also shakes their head at Jose Fernandez's series and locks the left in as next year's QEW specialist. In the final segment, Andrews deals with the return of Roberto Osuna and the emotions that are brought up. The host makes it clear that they want no part of any kind of potential sympathy for the former closer, and discusses their Jays From the Couch article where they recommend a hearty chorus of boos be rained upon the domestic abuser.Follow the podcast on Twitter @LockedOnJays and follow the host @NeoAC18!Subscribe on Google Play and iTunes! This episode is sponsored by Vivid Seats, Locked on NFL and Locked on NBA. It's a sweep-celebrating episode of the podcast today! But does host Ryan Andrews have an interesting plan for the Blue Jays to discuss? In the first segment, Andrews praises the efforts of young Thomas Pannone and his dazzling performance against Baltimore. The host is especially pleased with Pannone's seventh-inning efforts when things could have easily unraveled for the Blue Jays. Andrews says that is the real sign that Pannone can be a key piece for this club.In the middle segment, Andrews turns to Joe Biagini and another strong outing from the erstwhile starter/reliever. The Nova Scotian cites a great interview done by Jenn Smith for The Sporting News that offers some insights into how Biagini is attacking the rest of the season and trying to establish his rhythm. Andrews approves. In the finale, Andrews discusses a plan for Teoscar Hernandez and that plan is demotion. With Billy McKinney playing well and Lourdes Gurriel set to return from the DL, Andrews says that Hernandez should be sent on the Devon Travis express to Buffalo to regain confidence in the tail-end of the AAA season. The key speakers in this session are Richard Parkinson of Pinsent Masons LLP, Fran Eccles-Bech of Manchester Law Society, Joy Kingsley of Pannone LLP, and Graeme Jump of Mace and Jones. As employers restrict access to Facebook and other social media sites during regular working hours, email is still the number one time waster, according to UKFast's legal industry round table. Supporting the findings of the Confederation of the British Industry (CBI), personal email and internet use were identified by the panel as replacing sick days as the biggest danger to workplace productivity. Despite companies restricting the use of numerous sites to lunchtimes, finding a balance between acting like a Big Brother-style organisation and preventing essential time wasting is still a key issue. As 1 in 20 of all divorce petitions filed in England and Wales are now issued online, law firms also must prepare themselves to trade online as well as promote their business through their website. According to the expert panel, the legal community must inspire trust to encourage consumers to do this.
