An aerial drone photo taken on June 9 shows a nighttime dragon boat race held to celebrate the Dragon Boat Festival in Sanxi village of Changle district, Fuzhou, capital of Southeast China's Fujian province.6月9日,无人机航拍图展示了在中国东南福建省福州市长乐区三溪村举行的龙舟夜渡。Dragon Boat Festival, which in 2009 became the first Chinese holiday inscribed on UNESCO's Intangible Cultural Heritage list, concluded with traditional festivities that added vibrancy to popular tourist destinations.2009 年,端午节成为中国第一个被列入联合国教科文组织非物质文化遗产名录的节日。作为传统节庆活动,端午节也为热门旅行地增添活力。Figures from the Ministry of Culture and Tourism showed a 6.3-percent year-on-year increase in domestic tourism during the three-day holiday period, which started on Saturday. Over 110 million tourist visits were recorded, generating about 40.4 billion yuan ($5.57 billion) in tourism revenue, an 8.1-percent rise compared with last year. 8.1%。Travel agencies noted a slight decrease in overall crowds this year due to the scheduling overlap with China's crucial college entrance examination, or gaokao, which was held from Friday to Monday.不少旅行社留意到今年端午节的游客总体人数略有减少,其原因可能与6月6日至6月8日的高考时间重叠。However, destinations known for their traditional Dragon Boat Festival celebrations, particularly dragon boat races, remained popular.然而,以传统的端午节庆祝活动(尤其是赛龙舟)而闻名的旅行地仍受广大游客欢迎。"Guangdong province, renowned for its long history of dragon boat racing, saw a doubling of online searches for tour packages during the holiday," reported travel portal Qunar.去哪儿旅行社公布:“以悠久的赛龙舟历史而闻名的广东省,端午假期中旅行套餐的在线搜索量翻了一番。”Beyond the thrilling races, the festival is celebrated through various customs and activities, including preparing zongzi (glutinous rice dumplings), hanging mugwort for good health, and consuming medicinal liquor for blessings.除激动人心的赛龙舟之外,人们还通过各种习俗和活动来庆祝端午节,如包粽子、挂艾草、喝药酒等,以此来祈福。Shi Yuanyuan, a 28-year-old resident of Shenzhen, Guangdong, shared her experience."We brought our 3-year-old son to witness the dragon boat races in Foshan, another city in Guangdong. He was mesmerized by the boats. While he may not grasp the historical significance yet, experiencing the festive spirit and team energy is valuable," she said.28 岁的石媛媛来自广东深圳,她分享了自己的经历:“我们带着 3 岁的儿子去广东佛山欣赏赛龙舟,他看得非常入迷。虽然他现在可能还没有领会赛龙舟的历史意义,但感受节日气氛和团队精神很有价值。”According to travel platform Tuniu, the most popular domestic destinations during the holiday were Shanghai, Beijing, Guangzhou in Guangdong, Nanjing in Jiangsu province, and Chongqing.根据途牛旅途网,端午假期中最受游客欢迎的国内旅行地是上海、北京、广州、江苏南京和重庆。Shorter travel times due to the merely three-day holiday also enticed Chinese tourists to explore short-distance overseas options. "Japan, Thailand, Hong Kong, Malaysia, and South Korea were top choices due to their flight times," reported Fliggy, an online travel agency. Cross-border cruises also experienced a surge in popularity, with bookings jumping 14-fold year-on-year.三天的端午短假也吸引了中国游客探索短途海外旅行。旅行社飞猪称:“航班时间较短的日本、泰国、香港、马来西亚和韩国是游客首选。”跨境邮轮也大受欢迎,预订量同比增长 14 倍。Qunar highlighted the cost-effectiveness of traveling abroad during the Dragon Boat Festival, compared with the upcoming peak summer season.去哪儿旅行社突出了端午节相较暑假旺季出国旅游的高性价比。"International flight prices dropped 20 percent year-on-year, and overseas hotel rates remained around 70 percent of what they typically are in July and August," it said, adding that sales for international flights departing during the holiday increased more than 60 percent compared with last year.去哪儿旅行社公布数据:“国际航班价格同比下降20%,海外酒店价格仍保持在7月和8月正常水平的70%左右。”端午假期中起飞的国际航班销售量相较去年增长了60%以上。Ministry of Culture and Tourism n. Last time we spoke about the invasion of Outer Mongolia and the First Anhui-Zhili War. During the Xinhai Revolution, Outer Mongolia declared independence from the Qing Dynasty. Conflict arose between Mongolian nobles and Chinese authorities, leading to the formation of a provisional government under Jebtsundamba Khutuktu. Then the Russian civil war led to Russian encroachment of both red and white forces. Russian influence grew, particularly through Grigory Semyonov's attempt to establish a pan-Mongolian state. Duan Qirui seized the opportunity to invade Mongolia under the guise it was to thwart Bolshevism. While he did this to save face, it actually resulted in further conflict, this time with the Fengtian Clique. Wu Peifu and Zhang Zuolin combined their cliques to face Duan Qirui winning a very unexpected victory over the Anhui Clique. Duan Qirui resigned from all his posts in disgrace and now the Anhui Clique was a shadow of its former self. #99 The First Guangdong-Guangxi War Welcome to the Fall and Rise of China Podcast, I am your dutiful host Craig Watson. If you are still hungry for some more history related content, over on my channel, the Pacific War Channel where I cover the history of China and Japan from the 19th century until the end of the Pacific War. We just covered the first major war in the north, the first Anhui-Zhili War. Out of all the books and even the very few youtube videos I have seen trying to cover China's Warlord Era, typically they do First Anhui-Zhili War, then follow this up with the first Zhili-Fengtian war, second zhili-fengtian war, rarely the anti-fengtian war then suddenly everything jumps south into the Northern Expedition. The reality of China's Warlord era however, is that there really is not chronological series of events. For those statician's out there, its more like a horrifying ANOVA study, if you get the reference, we both share a certain pain haha. Multiple military wars and political wars were raging across China and they all affected other peoples and events, causing this nightmare of incoherency. For this series I am going to try my best to do it in a chronological order, and stating that we are jumping south today. Back to Yuan Shikai, in 1915 when he was planning to proclaim himself Emperor Walrus over a new dynasty, as we saw multiple provinces declared independence, some even actively rebelled. One of these provinces was Guangxi where Viceroy Lu Rongting declared an open rebellion against Yuan Shikai. Lu Rongting had been appointed governor over Guangxi after the second revolution. Yet after Cai E and Tang Jiyao unleashed the National Protection War, Lu immediately bandwagoned. Some historians suggest Lu Rongting did this because he felt Yuan Shikai was overlooking him and actively preventing him from expanding his sphere of influence into Guangdong. After the death of Yuan Shikai, the new president, Li Yuanhong appointed Lu Rongting as the governor of Guangdong, but this certainly did not sit well with Long Jiguang. Long Jiguang was the current governor of Guangdong and a supporter of Duan Qirui and the Anhui Clique. He was secretly working inline with the Anhui Clique, obeying the Beiyang government, undermining the National Protection movement in the south. When his colleagues such as Liang Qichao, Wang Chonghui and Tang Shaoyi found out they were the ones who asked president Li Yuanghong to get rid of him. Long Jiguang stated he was unwilling to resign his post, and this prompted Lu Rongting to dispatch Mo Rongxin, Ma Ji and Tan Haoming to lead a Guangxi based army to invade Guangdong to get rid of its pesky rebellious governor, or I guess better said anti-rebellious governor. Now rewinding a bit, when Zhang Xun forced Li Yuanhong to dissolve parliament, Guangdong and Guangxi both declared independence, I think for the 4th time? Hard to keep track of how many times southern provinces declare independence to be honest. When Zhang Xun restored the Manchu monarchy, this prompted Dr Sun Yat-Sen to sail south from Shanghai to Guangzhou to start a rebellion movement, because Mr. Sun is gunna do Mr. Sun stuff. Dr Sun Yat-Sen planned to rely on the power of southwestern provinces to rebel against this new tyrannical monarchy. Then in a matter of days, Zhang Xun's great restoration failed and Duan Qirui became the de facto leader over Beijing with his Anhui Clique dominating the scene in north china. Dr Sun Yat-Sen had planned for a political war, but Duan Qirui dissolved all means of doing so, now the only options were militarily. On August 25th, a meeting was held in Guangzhou where Dr Sun Yat-Sen announced he was going to launch a Northern Expedition with himself as Generalissimo. A new military government, or I guess you can call it a Junta was formed and Lu Rongting and Tang Jiyao were both appointed Marshals within it. Many armies were mobilized in Hunan, Guangdong, Yunnan and Guangxi. Respective cliques within these provinces all mobilized for their own reasons. One of these armies was commanded by Long Jiguang, though much of his military strength had been depleted during the second revolution. All he had left was 20 battalions, roughly 5000 men. There were several local militia styled armies, such as the “Fu Army” led by Li Fulin or the second Mixed Brigade of Huang Mingtang, but even with these added, Long Jiguang could not hope to face what was coming his way. The armies in Guangxi and Yunnan were better organized, better equipped and more numerous at this time. After the Junta had been created, the Beiyang government took it as a threat obviously and began to put into motion plans to destroy it. At first the governor of Chaomei, Mo Qingyu was sent with military forces to disband the Junta. He was decisively defeated by a coalition army commanded by Chen Bingkun, Shen Hognying, Lin Hu and Dr Sun Yat-Sen. After this Dr Sun Yat-Sen appointed Chen Jiongming to be the commander in chief of the Fujian and Guangdong Army. Then Dr Sun Yat-Sen, through his ally Zhu Qinglan managed to transfer command of the 20th battalion of the Guangdong Army to Chen Jiongming. Chen Jiongming took these troops and immediately attacked the Fujian governor Li Houji, occupying Longyan, Zhangzhou, Tingzhou and other areas along the Fujian, Guangdong border area. After doing this he proclaimed himself a defender of the area and began taxing the populace, being a warlord 101 basically. He established an independence base area in the eastern part of Guangdong and the southern part of Fujian, which was not cooperating with the Old Guangxi Clique. Now back to Lu Rongting. Lu Rongting was running out of allies. He had backed Duan Qirui, who was forced to give up his posts, and now Feng Guozhang and his Zhili clique were the big dogs in Beijing. Lu Rongting was unsure how to proceed, so he began publicly supporting Dr Sun Yat-Sen and the Guangzhou government. Lu Rongting then tried to dismantle the Guangzhou government through a reconciliation effort with the Beiyang government. Lu Rongting was basically turning everyone against Dr Sun Yat-Sen growing the Old Guangxi Cliques influence. Dr Sun Yat-Sen could see the paint on the wall, so he resigned from his position in May of 1918. An election was quickly held seeing Cen Chunxuan, another Old Guangxi member become president over the Guangzhou government, but in reality, Lu Rongting was pulling the strings. In the meantime, Chen Jiongming over in his area was also doing something similar by trying to negotiate a peace with Beijing. In 1918, Chen Jiongming was appointed by the Guangzhou government as the governor of Fujian province in October. Chen Jiongming set up simple government agencies, actively maintained the social order dominated by local gentry, and vigorously built Zhangzhou's urban infrastructure, reclaimed wasteland, and developed modern education and industry. During the period of protecting the law, merchants gathered in Zhangzhou and the market flourished. While he made Zhangzhou a sort of central government station, overall he was quite the anarchist in how he sought things to be done. By December, Chen Jiongming resigned stating publicly "My governorship over Fujian is in vain because we cannot feed the hungry, clothe the cold, and defend our army in battle. Fujian should be governed by Fujianese” In December of 1919, Dr Sun Yat-Sen saw Guangdong was building an army and stating publicly "Today's urgent task of saving the country is to pacify the Gui thieves first and unify the southwest" Dr Sun Yat-Sen planned to return to Guangdong to attack the Old Guangxi Clique forces. Heordered Chen Jiongming several times to send troops to help drive away the Old Guangxi Cliques, however, in his words "Chen Jiongming made no reply despite repeated calls to urge her to return to Guangdong." Zhu Zhixin, was dispatched 3 times to Zhangzhou with orders of Dr Sun Yat-sen to urge Chen Jiongming to mobilize. He wrote back to Dr Sun Yat-Sen: "Chen Jiongming's forces have exhausted all their strength and are as tired as ever. At this time, the relationship has been hurt, and it is useless to mobilize." Reading between the lines of these sorts of statements and messages, Chen Jiongming clearly had issues with Dr Sun Yat-Sens politics and did not want to get involved at the time. Thus until July of 1920 the Old Guangxi Clique was continuing to negotiate with the Zhili Clique officials controlling the Beiyang government. They agreed to help expel Duan Qirui and his Anhui goons, if the Old Guangxi clique guys would help expel Dr Sun Yat-Sen's followers in Guangdong. On July 14th however, the first Anhui-Zhili war broke out. Li Houji the governor of Fujian at the time, expressed a desire to support the Anhui clique's military and requested Guangdong forces depart southern Fujian. On July 15th, figures in the fractured Chinese navy such as Xu Shaozhen and Li Qian who supported Dr Sun Yat-Sen organized thousands of troops to fight the Old Guangxi clique. Xu Shaozhen became commander in chief and led the forces to attack Guangzhou from 5 different directions. On August 11th, the Old Guangxi clique mobilized their forces, thus beginning the Guangdong-Guangxi War or the first Yue-Gui War. The Old Guangxi Clique had roughly 70,000 troops, but they were by no means a unified force. There were the combined forces of Guizhou Warlords, Yunnan Warlords and Zhejiang Warlords. The Guizhou forces were led by Liu Zhilu, the Zhejiang forces were led by Lu Gongwang and the Yunnan forces were led by Fang Sengtao. The Guizhou would attack Guangdong with the Zhejiang army on their right and the Yunnanese to their left. Guangdong meanwhile would have roughly 25,000 troops led surprising by Chen Jiongming who had a change of heart, he was also aided by Xu Chongzhi and Hong Zhaolin. Chen Jiongming on the 12th of August had suddenly sworn an oath at the Zhangzhou park condemning Mo Rongxin, here is the statement “Ever since Mo Rongxin and others seized control of Guangdong, they have harmed our people in every possible way. The will of the people will be destroyed, the people killed, and expelled...to the extent that they condone the robbers and beggars' soldiers and harass Yan Lu, which is even more difficult to describe. The pain our people suffered from the loss of their provinces was a hundred times greater than the pain suffered by Korea, Annan, and Poland. They are naturally thieves, and seeking money and killing people is their usual skill. Recently, the bandits stationed in Hunan and Guangxi moved into Fujian to oppress our army. Their only intention is to hate the Cantonese people and act as if they are an enemy country... The Cantonese army today is fighting for the hometown and the country, and all its factions and other issues are unknown. It is to swear an oath with tears and to tell each other sincerely. My fellow countrymen, please take this opportunity to learn from me! All officers and men of the Guangdong army kowtowed together”. Chen Jiongming would also go on to accuse Mo Rongxin of "The Gui regards Guangdong as a conquered territory... Now that we are facing heavy troops, it is really unbearable. Although I am weak, I am willing to fight to the death" On August 16th the main bulk of the Old Guangxi clique forces had not yet reached the Guangdong-Fujian border, thus Chen Jiongming set up his headquarters at Zhang Ji Villages, leaving 20 battalions behind in Zhangzhou as a reserve. Chen Jiongming then took personal commander of the central forces, dispatched armies led by Li Bingrong, Deng Benyin, Luo Shaoxiong, Xiong Lue, amongst other officers to attack Raoping and Chao'an from the direction of Pinghe. After this they would break through Fengshun and Zijin, coordinating with a left and right wing. Meanwhile the left wing of Hong Zhaolin and Liang Hongkai led forces from Yunxiao and Zhao'an to attack Chenghai and Shantou while Xu Chongzhi commanding the right wing attacked Jioaling and Shantou from Shanghang. In all around 82 battalions were engaging two major fronts. The eastern part of Guangdong had been under Guizhou warlord rule for over 4 years when suddenly Chen Jiongming called “the Cantonese people to govern Guangdong and implement democratic politics”. The people there rallied to him, and this would have a profound effect on the war there. The left Guangdong army that departed Zhao'an quickly crossed the border where they defeated troops under Liu Zhilu, the commander of a major Guangxi army. After defeated him they stormed the garrisons at Chaomei, Huanggang, Chenghai and were approaching Shantou. On the 19th, Yu Yingyang, the commander of an artillery battalion under Liu Zhilu had already seized Shantou and declared independence and his desire to defect to the Guangdong army. Honestly this is how most battles worked in the warlord era, subordinate officers looking to dodge a real battle by switching sides, typically selling out their bosses in the process. This prompted Liu Zhilu to flee for Guangzhou. The next day, Deng Keng led the left Guangdong army to capture Shantou and soon they were pursuing the Guizhou forces towards Jieyang and Chaoyang. Meanwhile the right Guangdong army crossed the border from Yongding to attack Dabu Sanheba. Dabu Sanheba fell on the 16th, and it was followed the next day by Jiaoling. On the 18th an entire day of fighting was seen near Meixian where forces under Liu Daqing, commander of a Guangxi army and the governor of Huizhou were defeated. Meixian was captured on the 19th and Xingning on the 20th. After this the forward Guangxi army had collapsed allowing the Guangdong army to redirect itself towards Longchun and Heyuan. The army in Zhejiang watched the situation, but kept out of it while the Yunnan forces simply began a withdrawal as it seemed clear the Guangdong forces were likely to win. Again, the Guangdong forces were outnumbered perhaps 3 to 1, but these types of battles and lesser wars were won and done by perspectives. Ye Ju was leading a central thrust for the Guangdong forces, quickly taking Chao'an and Raoping. As he advanced towards Gaopo and Fengshun, there he encountered real resistance. 6 to 7000 men under the Guizhou clique General Zhuo Guiting stood firm, fighting Ye Ju for two days. Then the left wing of the Guangdong army captured Shantou and the right wing the upper reaches of the Dongjiang river, prompting General Zhuo Guiting to order a retreat. As his men fled, the reached the vicinity of Shigongshen where they were intercepted by Yang Kunru leading another Guangdong army who assailed them a long way.On the 26th the Chaomei area in eastern Guangdong was captured. On the same day, Dr Sun Yat Sen proclaimed "The Guangdong army attacked the thieves and recovered Chao and Mei in a few days. The speed of arriving here really broke the courage of the Gui thieves." This caused a panic in Lu Rongting who deployed troops from Guangxi to reinforce the front. The Guangxi army mobilized the first army of Ma Ji, 2nd army of Lin Hu, elements of the 3rd army of Shen Hongying, the 1st Brigade Marine Corps of Li Genyuang and other brigades to the front lines which were now at Heyuan, Boluo and Huiyang. The Guangdong forces continued their march seeing the right wing take Laolong on September 2nd. The battle along the front line was brutal and lost until October. Wei Bangping and Li Fulin representing the Guangzhou government attempted peace talks with the Guangdong forces, as the situation was looking increasingly bad for the Old Guangxi clique. The Old Guangxi clique dispatched police forces to crack down on newspapers, banning numerous publications that were critical of their war efforts. On the 13th of september all newspaper in Guangzhou ceased publications and any newspapers coming over from Hong Kong were confiscated for “publishing false military reports and subverting operations”. Meanwhile, starting in early September the Guangdong forces began working alongside the Cantonese people chanting slogans like “Cantonese people save yourselves, Cantonese people govern Guangdong”. Heyuan at the frontlines was the gateway to Huizhou. To defend Huizhou, the Guizhou forces had unleashed a month-long bloody battle. To help the war effort, Dr Sun Yat-Sen sent word to Zhu Zhixun over at the Pearl River Estuary, to mobilize the troops garrisoning the Human Fortress to rebel against the Guangxi menace. On September 16th, Zhu Zhixin managed to instigate a small rebellion. The commander of the Human Fortress garrison, Qiu Weinan declared independence from Guangxi, and during the mayhem that soon ensued he was killed by a stray bullet. Despite this, the Guangdong army had won a series of victories, managing to launch a province wide war to expel the Guangxi menace. Civilian forces were uprising against them, in late september Wei Bangping, the director of Police forces for Guangdong and Li Fulin the garrison commander of Guanghui who also happened to be a former Old Guangxi clique member, covertly moved troops from Xiangshen, Foshan and other places to the south bank of the pearl river in Guangzhou. There they declared the independence of Henan on the 26th. All the inland riverway warships and railway lines were taken and soon a letter was sent to Mo Rongxin urging him to quote "Return the power of governing Guangdong Province to the Cantonese people, and lead his troops back to Guangxi to avoid military disasters." Then Wei Bangping and Li Fulin led forces into Sanshui taking control over the vital Guangsan Road, effectively cutting off the Guizhou Army's supply line going from Xijiang to Guangzhou. This was a heavy blow to the Guizhou Army's rear and ability to continue the war effort. During this same time, Huang Mingtang the commander in chief of the 4th army seized Leizhou; Zheng Runqi the deputy commander under Wei Bangpings 5th Army raised a new force in Xiangshan and Chen Dechun the superintendent of Qingxiang and deputy commander of the 2nd army declared independence at Wuyi. From here Taishan, Xinhui, Kaiping, Enping, and Chixi fell under civilian army control. Qujiang, Yingde, and Qingyuan in Beijiang, Gaoyao, Xingxing and other counties in Xijiang, and Qinlian and Qiongya in the south all declared independence one after another. Within the dire circumstances, Mo Rongxin convened a meeting of over 30 representatives from the Guangzhou Chamber of commerce, the Provincial Council and the Public security association on October 2nd. The representatives proposed Mo Rongxin step down so Tang Yanguang could take his position and for the war to end as quickly as possible. On October 14th of 1920, all officers of the Guangzhou Navy held a closed door meeting in Haungpu Park where they unanimously opposed a new effort brought forward by Lin Baoyi, the commander in Chief of their navy to unify the northern and southern navies. On the 19th workers of the Guangdong-Hankou railway then launched a general strike, armed with pistols and explosives which they used against the Guizhou Army forces trying to use railway lines. Over 30 schools in Guangzhou then formed a mass meeting about the entire debacle and what they should do. The principals of the schools proclaimed "if Mr. Mo doesnt leave Guangdong, classes will not be held in each school." Back on the frontlines, on October the 16th the Guangdong right army finally captured Heyuan, opening the way to Huizhou. Simultaneously the central and left Guangdong armies captured Yong'an, Xiangpu, Lantang, Hengli and Sanduozhu effectively pressing the battle towards Huizhou. Now Huizhou is surrounded by mountains and rivers, making it quite easy to defend. Mo Rongxin concentrated the strength of his 40th Battalion there. At this point the commander of the 2nd army, Xu Chongzhi fell ill, prompting Chen Jiongming to replace him with a man named Chiang Kai-Shek. Chiang Kai-shek joined up in the middle army to begin a siege of Huizhou. The Guangdong forces would captured Huizhou by the 22nd. The very next day, Chen Jiongming held a meeting within the city and the commanders decided to march upon Zengcheng, Shillong and Dongguan in three directions. After this they would attack Guangzhou to finish the campaign. During this crisis the populations of Bao'an, Sanshui and other nearby cities began an uprising, lashing out against the Guizhou army. As Dr Sun Yat-Sen recalled "The strong people raised their flags and responded, while the old and weak people welcomed them. This is quite the charm of the Revolution of 1911." Within Guangzhou, civilians launched waves of worker strikes, school strikes and general strikes. Mo Rongxin had run out of forces to fall upon, it was all falling apart. On the 24th, Lu Rongting, acting in the name of the president of the Guangzhou government declared the dissolution of the government and the independence of Guangdong and Guangxi. The president of the Guangzhou government, Cen Chunxuan fled for Shanghai. On the 25th of October, Shilon was taken, the next day Dongguan fell and finally seeing the situation was over, Mo Rongxin canceled the supposed Guangdong independence movement. On the 27th Zengcheng fell as Mo Rongxin had the Guangzhou Arsenal blown up and the governors seal was given to Tang Tingguang as he fled the city. Yang Yongtai, the governor of Guangdong province resigned via a telegram, handing his governor seal to Wei Bangping. On the 28th, Jiongming deployed forces to Guangzhou and around the areas of Shougouling and Baiyun to try and catch fleeing enemies. The three Guangdong armies gathered around Guangzhou, launching a general offensive together on the 29th. Mo Rongxin after fleecing after department he could fled with 10,000 remaining loyal troops west as Guangzhou was finally captured. On the 30th, Wang Jingwei and Liao Zhongkai sent telegrams to Dr Sun Yat-Sen stating they were going to appoint Chen Jiongming as the governor of Guangdong; to remove Lin Baoyi as commander in chief of the navy and replace him with Tang Yanguang. On November 1st, Chen Jiongming became the governor of Guangdong and remained the commander in chief of the Guangdong Army. On november 2nd, Chen Jiongming liberated the Guangzhou-Kowloon Railway, denying its use to Cen Chunxuan and Mo Rongxin. The same day, Xu Chongzhi paraded through Guangzhou to raise morale for the citizenry, newspapers reported "the citizens rejoiced and rushed to set off cannons. Looking at all the situations, there was a sign of great joy." On the 6th, Tang Tingguang handed the governor seal to Chen Jiongming and sent a telegram dismissing the governor of Guangdong. On the 10th, Chen Jiongming was officially elected governor over Guangdong. Yet the enemy was still not fully defeated. The Guizhou army was retreating along the Xijiang River, where they performed a scorched earth policy, burning and looting every town they came by along the river. They also set up outposts along the Xijiang and Beijing rivers to prevent the Guangdong army from following. To rid the province of the nuisance, Chen Jiongming reorganized the entire Guangdong Army into 5 armies. The 1st army was personally commanded by Chen Jiongming who also acted as commander in chief; the 2nd army went back to Xu Chongzhi, the 3rd to Hong Zhaolin, the 4th to Li Fulin and the 5th to Wei Bangping. After resupplying, the Guangdong army marched west into two large groups to pursue the enemy to Guangxi. When the Guangdong forces entered Guangzhou, the Guizhou army first retreated to Zhaoqing. Because Wei Bangping and Li Fulin seized control over the Guangsan route, the Guangxi Army could only retreat from the Guangdong-Han Road. While under attack, the Guizhou Army divided its self into two groupsl one led by Ma Ji and Shen Hongying who retreated north along the Yua-Han road, the other led by Lin Hu and Han Caifeng headed further south. The Guangdong army pursued their enemy over both land and river, seizing Zhaoqing on the 15th. By the 21st, Lu Rongting ordered all forces still in Guangdong to return swiftly into Guangxi. This effectively was the end of the Guangdong-Guangxi war. On November 28th, Dr Sun Yat-sen returned to Guangzhou from Shanghai via Hong Kong and announced the reorganization of the military government. Overall what would be the first Guangdong-Guangxi war had ended the old Guangxi Clique. The Old Guangxi clique was not down for the count, but they had severely lost face. Guangxi province was not the most developed one in China, it made it very difficult to raise funds to keep the army going. Lu Rongtings ability to control and influence the Old Guangxi Clique began to dwindle. It would only force him and others to perform an identical war against Guangdong in 1921, in desperation to maintain their power. I would like to take this time to remind you all that this podcast is only made possible through the efforts of Kings and Generals over at Youtube. If you are still hungry after that, give my personal channel a look over at The Pacific War Channel at Youtube, it would mean a lot to me. In the grand scheme of things, it was another drop in the bucket, yet it was extremely representative of the regular ongoing of China's warlord era. Wherever you looked from 1918-1928, regional warlords fought petty wars to control strategic regions, simply to further exert their own power. For the Old Guangxi Clique it was a bitter lesson, not that they learnt from it though.

The goal of the survey was to take the pulse of youths' views on the development of the GBA.这项调查由粤港青年协会和其他三个组织进行,于2023年9月至10月采访了1000名15至39岁的香港青年和530名在广东省居住的香港青年。调查的目的是了解年轻人对粤港澳大湾区发展的意见。Among the interviewees who have plans for further study, more than 70 percent intend to go to the Chinese mainland. Among those who are studying in Guangdong, 42 percent indicated a desire to return to the special administrative region within five years. The survey organizer believed that it shows that Hong Kong residents have a high potential to work and study between the two places.在有深造计划的受访者中,超过70%的人打算去中国内陆。在广东省学习的受访者中,42%的人表示希望在五年内回到香港特别行政区。调查组织者认为,这表明香港居民在两地工作和学习的潜力很大。Adam Kwok Kai-fai, founder and executive chairman of the association, said that in view of the shortage of talent and labor in Hong Kong in recent years, the government should adopt multipronged approaches, and start attracting students who have the potential to the SAR to pursue further studies as early as possible, as well as encouraging those who have finished their studies in Hong Kong to stay, so as to provide talent for the city's transformation into "eight centers"—eight key areas set out by the nation for the city in its 14th Five-Year Plan (2021-25). Lawyer Elvis Lam Gwong-kin, who completed his university studies on the mainland and who has practiced in the GBA since 2016, agreed with the measures proposed in the report, including optimizing the government's funding for students to pursue study on the mainland—the Mainland University Study Subsidy Scheme.在内地完成大学学业并自2016年以来一直在大湾区执业的林光健(Elvis Lam Gwong-kin)律师同意报告中提出的措施,包括优化政府为学生在内地学习提供的资金——内地大学学习资助计划。Lam told China Daily that it provides incentives for youngsters to choose the mainland for study as it significantly reduces the cost of studying.林光健律师告诉《中国日报》,它为年轻人选择在内地学习提供了激励,因为它大大降低了学习成本。The scheme allows students from poor families who have dreams of going to college or graduate school to continue their education, he added.他补充说,该计划可以让那些梦想上大学或研究生的家庭贫困的学生继续接受教育。Lam also proposed simplifying the government's Greater Bay Area Youth Employment Scheme, which provides a HK$10,000($1,300) subsidy for job positions in the GBA's mainland cities for 18 months. Lam suggested canceling the requirement of only those who have recently graduated from college, allowing more youngsters to apply for the employment scheme.林光健律师还建议简化政府的大湾区青年就业计划,该计划为在大湾区内地城市工作18个月的人员提供1万港元(1300美元)的补贴。他建议取消对刚毕业大学生的要求,让更多的年轻人申请就业计划。。A PhD student from Guangzhou University of Chinese Medicine shared his personal experience of studying and starting a business on the mainland at the news conference. He said studying on the mainland can help Hong Kong students become more familiar with the cultures of each place, as well as the national development guidelines and policies, giving them the upper hand in pursuing their own careers. Patrick Choi Cheong-wa, a Hong Kong interior designer who founded an architectural design company in Foshan, Guangdong province, told China Daily that he hopes that the authorities can launch entrepreneurship support programs for Hong Kong youngsters, providing support like apartments, capital, training and professional guidance. Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area n.

"Ryan": Ryan Pannone is currently the Head Coach of the GLeague team Birmingham Squadron and already has almost 20 years of coaching experience when he started as a young coach in High School. Shortly after he started to work as an Assistant for David Thorpe as a Player Development coach and quickly realized his passion. Throughout his career he had plenty of responsibilities as a young and aspiring Assistant Coach in Foshan, China which lead him to becoming an Assistant in Hanau, Germany later. He also was a player development coach and coaching staff member at Hapoel Jerusalem as well as a Head Coach in Prievidza, Slovakia. In today's episode Ryan and me talked about many different parts of his career but mostly about the art of how to build a career by being persistent and focusing on opportunities instead of paychecks. Ryan walked me through the different situations he faced in his career and how he never put money over gaining new knowledge! Ryan went through plenty of different coaching stations that prepared him for his jobs going forward and made him a better coach and person in the long-run. We also touched on the importance of having great mentorship, which in his case it was definitely the case with David Thorpe who guided him early on and gave him ownership as well as credibility as a reliable player development coach. This conversation is eye-opening in many regards but mostly for young and aspiring coaches who are looking for guidance in their pursuit of a career. Enjoy! Show #1474 Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily, you trusted source of EV information. It's Saturday 21st May, it's Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to. VOLKSWAGEN'S GLOBAL PRODUCTION NETWORK FOR ELECTRIC VEHICLES GROWS - Volkswagen is expanding its global production network for electric vehicles by starting to make the all-electric ID.4 in Emden. Emden is now the second site for electric vehicles in Germany following Zwickau and also joins the Chinese plants in Anting and Foshan. - Chattanooga (ID.4) and Hanover will also commence production this year. As a result, Volkswagen is creating the conditions in 2022 for building 1.2 million all-electric vehicles a year based on the MEB in the future at its sites in Europe, the U.S. and China. - Apart from the ID.4, Emden will make another model – the AERO B – next year. In addition, production of the iconic ID. Buzz will commence this year at Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles in Hanover. It will be joined from 2023 on by the ID.3 made in Wolfsburg, while a further electric vehicle – the Trinity – will then roll off the assembly line at the location starting in 2026. - The ID.4's start-up is on schedule, despite the global challenges during the two-year conversion phase. Emden's maximum production capacity at the end of 2022 will be 800 units per working day, depending on the supply situation. - In the first quarter of 2022 alone, Volkswagen delivered more than 30,000 units – meaning every one-in-two all-electric vehicles from Volkswagen is an ID.4. 163,000 units have been delivered since its launch, making the ID.4 the Volkswagen brand's and the Group's best-selling e-vehicle. In many markets, the electric SUV jumped to the top of the sales charts in its very first year and was the best-selling all-electric vehicle in countries such as Denmark, Finland, Ireland or Sweden. There are currently around 73,000 orders on hand worldwide for the successful model Original Source : https://www.automotiveworld.com/news-releases/volkswagens-global-production-network-for-electric-vehicles-grows-with-the-launch-of-a-second-german-site-in-emden/ BYD'S SEAL MODEL TO UTILIZE INNOVATIVE CELL-TO-BODY TECHNOLOGY - On Friday, Chinese automaker BYD unveiled its foremost technology called CTB (cell to body), which allows the battery to be integrated into the vehicle body itself. The first EV model to utilize the technology will be the Seal series of vehicles. - Before the CTB solution, the most common method with which to manufacture batteries was with CTP (Cell To Pack), that is, the battery cell was directly integrated into the battery pack. The world's first CTP battery pack from Contemporary Amperex Technology Co., Limited (CATL) went offline in 2019, and was successively introduced on Tesla's Model 3 and Model Y, XPeng P7 and other models in the last two years. The blade battery released by BYD in March 2020 also used CTP technology. - CTB solution allows the sandwich structure originally used for the battery pack to be used throughout the vehicle, with the top cover of the battery pack making up the vehicle body's flooring. This design allows for a 100 percent increase in body torsional stiffness over conventional designs - The standard-range rear-wheel-drive version is equipped with a 150kW motor, 61.4 kWh battery, and a CLTC cruising range of 550km. The four-wheel-drive performance version has an output power of 390kW, 82.5 kWh battery and a CLTC cruising range of 650km. But as more scenarios become viable, would two ports be better than one? - That appears to be something GM has either pondered, or saved for the future, with a recent patent filing showing a setup that might get the most out of GM's double-layer pack - The proposed setup relies on a series of controllers and switches, in addition to the GM pack's baked-in ability to operate as two different packs in series or in parallel, thus permitting the top and bottom to temporarily be wired in series. The latter allows 800-volt charging to take advantage of speedier 350-kw DC fast-charging hardware. - GM outlines that one charging port could be configured to charge at 800V or 400V, while the other charge port would be connected to the other “pack” and only be 400V. It could connect them in series while charging both the upper and lower packs at the same time using 800V and the first port. Or it could use both ports to charge the upper and lower packs simultaneously at 400V, with the controller capable of selectively connecting them in parallel. Hello and welcome to another episode of the Dongfang Hour China Aero/Space News Roundup! Without further ado, the news update from the week of 26 April - 2 May.1) Chinese Space Station: launch of the core Module Tianhe on-board Launch March 5BOn April 29 2021, China successfully sent the first module of the Chinese Space Station into orbit. The module was a 22.5-ton core module called Tianhe (天和, or “heavenly peace”). It was launched aboard a Long March 5B.Tianhe is rightfully named the core module: it will be the centerpiece of the station which will host living quarters for the taikonauts, a bathroom, a kitchen, it will also be the main control unit (attitude, trajectory control), handles the fuel, power and air management systems. It is designed to host 3 taikonauts, and can hold up to 6 taikonauts during rotations. The Tianhe module will be joined next year by the Mengtian and Wentian experimental modules. In 2024, the Chinese space station will also be joined by a space telescope called Xuntian, which will not be physically connected to the station but will evolve in the vicinity, and docking only for maintenance purposes.2) Creation of a New Space SoE China SatNetMajor news update on Thursday 29 April which first came in the form of a press release from SASAC. The press release announced the creation of a China Satellite Networks Group Company, potentially SatNet for short, and puts that company under the direct administration of SASAC. SatNet is tasked with deploying and operating China’s LEO broadband constellation, widely speculated to be GuoWang. The creation of a SatNet company at this level of the SOE hierarchy is hugely significant. SatNet is, at least in theory, at the same level in the hierarchy as CASC, CASIC, and the big 3 telcos (all of which are also directly controlled by SASAC). If we compare this to the previous arrangement, you had China’s biggest broadband project being done by CASC (Hongyan), and another by CASIC (Hongyun), with both projects involving subsidiary companies with multiple shareholders (for example, Hongyan’s operating company, MacroNet, has shareholders including CASC, China Telecom, and CETC). This would have meant, presumably, that projects like Hongyan would have mostly used the technology of CASC, Hongyun would have used technology for CASIC, and the innovation and competition would have occurred in the long-term, after we find out how these constellations work. On the other hand, the current situation with SatNet being at the same level as CASC, CASIC, the telcos, etc., means that it should, at least in theory, have a lot more freedom of choice in its sourcing options. 3) Long March 6 launches a Batch of 9 Smallsats into Orbit, many payloads of interestOn April 27th, China launched an impressive launch share mission on-board a Long March 6, putting 9 satellites into orbit. These satellites were:Qilu-1 and Qilu-4. Qilu-1 is a SAR satellite. Qilu-4 on the other hand is a high-resolution panchromatic EO satellite .Foshan-1 is a high res panchromatic EO satellite meant to be a technology verification platform of the Foshan-based Jihua Laboratory.Zhong’an Guotong-1 satellite (also called Hangsheng-1)Guodian Gaoke’s Tianqi-9 IoT satellite, developed by ASES Space.Origin Space’s NEO-1: a technology verification satellite, meant to trial the capture of a small celestial body and various orbital maneuvers.Golden Bauhinia-1-01 and -02 are two remote sensing satellites.Taijing-2 satellite, manufactued by Minospace, will be used primarily for remote sensing, and is the third satellite launched to be based on the MN-50 platform. ---------------------------------------- Follow us on YouTube, LinkedIn, Twitter, as an audio podcast, and on our official website: https://www.dongfanghour.com/

Last year late one evening, I sat down and watched a martial arts film entitled, The Grandmaster, a 2013 Hong Kong-Chinese martial arts drama film based on the life story of the https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wing_Chun https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grandmaster_(martial_arts) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ip_Man. There are a number of Ip Man films starring Donnie Yen that I have enjoyed watching. The following is a synopsis of The Grandmaster: For the first forty years of his life, Ip Man (Tony Leung) leads a fairly simple life. He begins his study of the martial arts at the age of seven, starts a family with his wife Cheung Wing-sing (Song Hye-kyo), and focuses on perfecting his Wing Chun. In the 1930s, martial arts grandmaster Gong Yutian (Wang Qingxiang), a master of Xingyi and Bagua, announces his retirement. He's appointed his longtime apprentice Ma San (Zhang Jin) as his heir in the north. He comes down to the town of Foshan to identify his successor in the south. Having witnessed Ip Man in action defeating a dozen men including arch nemesis The Razor (Chang Chen), the retiring grandmaster believes that the young Wing Chun master is the right man to succeed him. Gong Yutian's daughter Gong Er (Zhang Ziyi) thinks otherwise. To determine his heir, Gong Yutian issues an open challenge to the south. As part of this challenge, the masters of the south are to select a representative to face the grandmaster. Though many masters jockey for the opportunity, Ma San bars them all. As Gong Yutian hopes, the masters ultimately end up selecting Ip Man to challenge him. After some preparation, the young Wing Chun master meets the retiring grandmaster for a match of wits. In order to win, he must break the cake in Gong Yutian's hand. After a fierce back and forth between two magnificent warriors, Ip Man does just that and prevails. Unhappy about her father's defeat, Gong Er introduces the new grandmaster to her 64 Hands technique and leaves a lasting impression on him. As time marches on, the Japanese invade China, and Ip Man is forced to flee to Hong Kong. There, the grandmaster begins a martial arts school and reunites with friends and foes alike. Accessed from http://www.sobrietytestmoviereviews.com/current-movie-reviews/review-when-ip-man-s-wing-chun-meets-gong-er-s-64-hands-in-the-grandmaster-everybody-wins-the-chess-match on March 27, 2021. The next morning I sat down with Brad Ames at Starbucks in Hendersonville and after we had finished our opening dialogue he asked me, “Carroll, are you familiar with the chess prodigy, Bobby Fischer?” I had never heard of him and so Brad begin to tell me of the first and only American-born world chess champion, a grandmaster around 1972 and eccentric genius beloved to have an I.Q. of 181, today he is ranked #3 all-time best chess player. What really caught my attention was that Brad kept speaking of the 64 squares on the chessboard, Brad kept speaking of our enemy and how he could out maneuver us if we didn't walking humility. For me I was sitting there thinking about the invitation I had recently been invited into with the Lord concerning the northern campaign that Joshua had led in the taking of the promise land. There's so much to this but in short Joshua lead the conquest primarily through two campaigns, one in the south and one in the north. In the south there were nine kings defeated and in the north twenty-two for a total of 31 kings. It will not be until David rightfully becomes king after Saul's unification of the nation that you will see the South (Judah) and the North (Israel) become one untied Monarchy or more properly Theocracy. MZHOP had covered 7 of those kings, OOMZ had covered 2 but when we launched Asheville Collider we were already in the 10th king (PH10; see below) and ascending in the Northern campaign. Presently we are up against the 16th (7th Hebrew letter Zayin) out of 31 kings. Decrease time over target: paypal.me/mzhop or Venmo @clastronaut

VOLKSWAGEN GROUP NOW MAKING EVS IN FIVE LOCATIONS" Volkswagen Group's manufacturing capabilities of MEB-based electric cars expanded significantly and, including the small Transparent Factory in Dresden, there are now five sites globally." says InsideEVs: "The total combined maximum production capacity of those plants is more than 900,000, but it will take quite some time to reach such a level. Zwickau, Germany - up to 330,000, six models. Transparent Factory in Dresden, Germany. Mladá Boleslav, Czechia. FAW-Volkswagen plant in Foshan, China - up to 300,000. SAIC Volkswagen plant in Anting, China - up to 300,000. In Zwickau, Volkswagen produces around 800 all-electric ID.3 and ID.4 cars per day. When new models join the line, the rate will be up to 1,500 vehicles per day or 330,000 vehicles per year at its peak. In 2022, three new plants will also start production of MEB-based cars: Emden and Hanover plants in Germany and Chattanooga in the U.S." https://insideevs.com/news/483167/volkswagen-group-five-plants-meb-based-evs/ GOOGLE USES AI TO PLOT FASTEST, MOST EFFICIENT EV ROAD TRIPS "In a blog post this week, Google says it has devised a new Maps feature that uses “graph theory” to sort through all the permutations and give drivers accurate information about how to drive and charge along the way. There are so many factors to consider — the state of charge of your battery when you begin, how far your car can drive given weather, traffic, and elevation changes, and the availability of chargers along your route are all important considerations." says Steve at CleanTechnica: "at the present time the only two cars with Android Automotive baked in are the Polestar 2 and Volvo XC40 Recharge, although more models are on the way." Google said in a blog post: "“Today, we present a new approach for routing of EVs integrated into the latest release of Google Maps built into your car for participating EVs that reduces range anxiety by integrating recharging stations into the navigational route,“Now when you enter a destination that requires two or more recharge stops, algorithms in Maps will search and filter through tens to thousands of public charging stations to find the most efficient route — all in less than 10 seconds. You can see how long each charge will take and your updated total trip time, so your final ETA will never again be a mystery, Based on the battery level and the destination, Maps will recommend the charging stops and the corresponding charging levels that will minimize the total duration of the trip. To accomplish this we engineered a highly scalable solution for recommending efficient routes through charging stations, which optimizes the sum of the driving time and the charging time together.”" https://cleantechnica.com/2021/01/31/google-uses-ai-to-plot-fastest-most-efficient-ev-road-trips/ CHINESE BATTERY PRODUCERS PLUG INTO SOARING GERMAN EV SALES "Two Chinese makers of electric vehicle batteries are set to break ground this year on $3.2 billion worth of production facilities in Germany to serve Europe's expanding market for new-energy cars, following in the footsteps of industry leader Contemporary Amperex Technology Ltd." reports Nikkei Asia: "SVOLT Energy Technology, a spinoff from Chinese automaker Great Wall Motor, plans to break ground on two factories, at a combined cost of about 2 billion euros ($2.42 billion), in the western state of Saarland by year-end. Farasis Energy (Ganzhou), which sold a 3% stake last year to automotive group Daimler in a deal valued at 900 million yuan ($138.8 million), aims to start construction of a 600 million euro factory in the eastern town of Bitterfeld by the end of March. SVOLT aims to churn out 24 gigawatt-hours worth of auto batteries a year in Germany, a quarter of its global target, while Farasis aims to put out 6 GWh from Bitterfeld by next year on the way to full output of 10 GWh. CATL has said its German plant will be able to produce 14 GWh of batteries." President of SVOLT Europe: "Before we settled on Saarland, we scouted more than 30 locations, including in Eastern Europe, and we found that only in Germany would we be able to quickly recruit enough talent and source electricity in a way that our clients' climate targets can be met" https://asia.nikkei.com/Business/Automobiles/Chinese-battery-producers-plug-into-soaring-German-EV-sales TESLA'S DIRTY LITTLE SECRET: ITS NET PROFIT DOESN'T COME FROM SELLING CARS "Tesla posted its first full year of net income in 2020 -- but not because of sales to its customers. Eleven states require automakers sell ascertain percentage of zero-emissions vehicles by 2025. If they can't, the automakers have to buy regulatory credits from another automaker that meets those requirements -- such as Tesla, which exclusively sells electric cars." according to CNN: "It's a lucrative business for Tesla -- bringing in $3.3 billion over the course of the last five years, nearly half of that in 2020 alone. The $1.6 billion in regulatory credits it received last year far outweighed Tesla's net income of $721 million -- meaning Tesla would have otherwise posted a net loss in 2020." https://edition.cnn.com/2021/01/31/investing/tesla-profitability/index.html TESLA OFFERING DISCOUNT TO CUSTOMERS WITH EXISTING ORDERS FOR MODEL S AND MODEL X "After years of waiting Tesla finally announced a design refresh to the Model S and Model X earlier this week. Along with the drastically redesigned interior, Tesla also increased the prices of all variants of its flagship vehicles." says DriveTeslaCanada: "That increase left customers with existing orders placed before the increase suddenly facing having to pay about $10,000 USD more than originally planned. Those customers are now learning Tesla is softening the blow just a bit, by offering a $2,000 discount on existing orders." Twttier user @raffaeri: “My boss ordered a Model X a few weeks ago. He got a call from Tesla today. For 2000€ more he can have the Refreshed Model X but... it won't be available until September. The order page said March 2021! So Tesla can not deliver Model S/X in Europe until September!" https://driveteslacanada.ca/model-s/tesla-offering-discount-to-customers-with-existing-orders-for-model-s-and-model-x/ TESLA MODEL S AND MODEL X REFRESH GAMING, INFOTAINMENT SYSTEM GPU DETAILS LEAKED "A renowned tech leaker has shared what could very well be a block diagram depicting some details of the Model S and Model X refresh’s in-car gaming system/infotainment system GPU. Based on the information presented in the leak, it appears that Tesla’s in-car gaming system would indeed be on par with some of the market’s most popular consoles. " reports TEslarati: "ccording to the leaked block diagram, Tesla will reportedly be using an AMD Navi 23 GPU for its onboard infotainment system, which would be equipped with 16Gb (2GB) Samsung GDDR6 memory chips (K4ZAF325XM). Considering that there are four modules depicted in the leaked diagram, it appears that Tesla’s infotainment system will have 8GB of memory in total. Tesla’s official webpages for the Model S and Model X refresh note that the vehicles’ in-car gaming system offers up to 10 teraflops of processing power, which is comparable to those offered by dedicated gaming consoles like the Sony PlayStation 5 and the Xbox Series X." Storage? https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-new-infotainment-gaming-gpu-specs-leak/ ALL TESLA VEHICLES NOW HAVE EFFICIENCY-BOOSTING HEAT PUMP And a story from InsideEVs on the Model S/X Heat Pump: "People were so entertained with the steering yoke on the refreshed Model S and Model X that they probably did not know both cars now also present a heat pump. First offered in the Tesla Model Y, this component aims to offer higher energy efficiency in electric vehicles during the winter. The 2021 Tesla Model 3 already presents one, making the entire Tesla lineup for offering it." https://insideevs.com/news/482829/all-tesla-vehicles-heat-pump/ BMW CONSIDERS MOVING UP I4 PRODUCTION "According to a media report, BMW brings forward the production start of the all-electric i4 from the year’s end to August or September. This means BMW could roll-out the first cars in Germany in 2021. In China, meanwhile, BMW has significantly reduced the price of its iX3 electric SUV." says electrive; "The i4, as is well known, is being built in Munich. Preparations for the production of the all-electric Gran Coupé started last summer. For six weeks, vehicle production was suspended during the Bavarian summer holidays to retool the existing production facilities so that in future the BMW 3 Series Sedan, the BMW 3 Series Touring, both with combustion engines and hybrid drive, the BMW M3 and the all-electric BMW i4 can be manufactured on the same line. As the German Handelsblatt now reports about group circles, the start of production of the i4 is to be brought forward to August or September." They also reported news of the iX3 in Germany: "The Munich-based company activated the online configurator for the iX3 last month in their native Germany and published the associated price and equipment list. The starting price is slightly lower than originally announced, namely 66,300 euros for the Inspiring variant. The higher equipment variant Impressive is listed from 71,800 euros. The German environmental bonus of 7,500 euros can still be deducted from the official prices. The first cars will be delivered at the end of January." The ID.3 and ID.4 are currently being assembled there, with derivatives of the Audi Q4 e-tron and the Cupra el-Born to be added later. Other MEB plants in Europe are not scheduled to begin until 2022, such as Emden as the second plant for the ID.4, and the VW commercial vehicles plant in Hanover for the production version of the ID. Buzz." In comparison at the VW plant in Germany already making the ID.3 and ID.4 they have production capacity of 750 a day, or 5,250 a week. Over a 48 week year (allowing for one week shutdown per quarter) that's 252,000 VW brand cars from just that one factory. https://www.electrive.com/2020/11/26/skoda-starts-series-production-of-all-electric-enyaq/ VW Speeds Up Work on Small Electric Car "Volkswagen AG is accelerating development of a compact electric car that will cost less than 30,000 euros ($35,800) as tightening emissions rules and generous subsidies bolster sales of battery-powered vehicles, according to people familiar with the matter. The VW-branded car may be introduced as early as 2022" writes Bloomberg today: "To free up funds for the industry’s biggest electric-car offensive, VW will take more steps to shrink its portfolio of combustion-engine cars after already culling models including the Beetle and the Scirocco. It will discontinue the mid-sized Passat sedan in the U.S. and sell only the station-wagon version in Europe, the people said. VW may also phase out the upscale Arteon coupe, they said." https://www.bloomberg.com/amp/news/articles/2020-11-27/vw-speeds-up-work-on-small-electric-car-culls-combustion-models How the US plans to turn all its iconic school buses electric "The US school bus is a cultural icon. With its distinctive yellow livery, this design classic has inhabited the roads of North America in various forms since 1939, and the region is unique in having a fleet of dedicated buses for transporting school students. Most other areas use ordinary public-service buses for the school runs. On average 480,000 yellow buses carry upwards of 25 million children to school on a daily basis in the US." says Electric Hybrid Vehicle Technology website, the problem is, they're dirty diesel: "poor air quality has been proven to be responsible for high rates of asthma, cancer, and heart disease; and research by scientists at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health has shown that just a small increase in fine-particulate pollution, such as that from the diesel engines of school buses, results in a 15 percent increase in the death rate due to COVID-19. . President Elect Joe Biden’s Build Back Better plan for creating a more resilient, sustainable economy proposes making all American-made buses zero-emission by 2030, starting with the school bus fleet, which would convert within five years." The buses are currently made in Alabama, California, Georgia, Indiana, Minnesota, New York, and both North & South Carolina. There is an unusual bias in the U.S., so far in 2020 there were 40,714 school buses registered and 5,402 city buses. A problem is the price, 350k compared to 100k for diesel. TCO is not as powerful because they do so few miles. https://www.electrichybridvehicletechnology.com/opinion/how-the-us-plans-to-turn-all-its-iconic-school-buses-electric.html VW's EV boss discusses the move to electrification "Thomas Ulbrich, Volkswagen Group's e-mobility boss, has spent two years overseeing VW's move to electrification. Ulbrich discussed the challenges of refitting eight of the automaker's global plants to build full-electric cars" On retooling for the ID.3: "We converted the plant virtually during ongoing operations. In one half of the plant, we were still building full numbers of combustion engines when we started with the electric vehicles in the other half. But in the end, everything worked despite the enormous challenges that the coronavirus pandemic demands of all of us" On the MEB platform: " Even at the development stage, we designed the platform in such a way that we have far-reaching synergies through identical parts for different vehicles and different models. This time, we made sure that the concept of the bodies was identical across all brands, so that we had sufficiently differentiated vehicles in terms of design, but which we could still build on one assembly line." On expansion: "The two plants in China, Anting and Foshan, will start up this year. The same applies to Skoda's production in Mlada Boleslav in the Czech Republic. Dresden in Germany will follow at the beginning of 2021, Emden and Hanover, aso in Germany, in 2022. In the second half of 2022, Chattanooga will also start up in the U.S." On scale: "Our goal is to build 1 million EVs for the Volkswagen brand alone in 2023 and to achieve global output of 1.5 million by 2025. The MEB-based vehicles of the other group brands will then be added." On how important the ID.4 is: "It is particularly important at the start of our electric offensive that we serve the volume segments. That's the best way to achieve economies of scale and make full use of our plants. And the ID4 will be our volume driver, which, with 500,000 units, will account for a third of our global EV sales in 2025." https://europe.autonews.com/automakers/vws-ev-boss-discusses-move-electrification+ China's SAIC Motor Launches New Electric-Vehicle Project "SAIC Motor Corp. has initiated a new project to produce high-end electric vehicles, the latest expansion move by Chinese car makers enticed by a rosy outlook for new-energy vehicles. "Bir adamın dilini kopardığında, onun yalancı olduğunu ispatlamış olmuyorsun. Sadece dünyaya onun söyleyebileceklerinden korktuğunu söylemiş oluyorsun." - George R.R. Martin, A Clash of Kings Yolcu koltuklarından birinin ikaz ışığının yanmakta olduğunu gören görevli hostes, oraya doğru yöneldiğinde, yolcunun içecek veya yiyecek bir şeyler isteyeceğinden adı gibi emindi. Ancak ikaz lambasının hemen altında oturan ve 40’lı yaşlarının sonunda görünen Amerikalı yolcuya yaklaştığında, soğuk soğuk terlemekte olduğunu fark edince durumun ciddi olduğunu anladı. “Beyefendi” diye konuştu. “Bir sorun mu var?”. Muhatabı “Kendimi hiç iyi hissetmiyorum.” diye cevap verdi güçlükle. Singapur’a gitmek üzere Çinden havalanan yolcu uçağı, Vietnam’ın Hanoi şehrine acil iniş izni istediğinde, yolcu bilincini kaybetmişti. … Jiang Yanyong'un Hikayesi Dr. Jiang Yanyong 2003’ün Şubat ayında, Amerikalı iş insanı Johnny Chen, Çin-Singapur uçuşu sırasında pnömoni benzeri semptomlar gözlenmesi üzerine, Vietnam’a acil iniş sonrasında Hanoi Fransız Hastanesi’ne kaldırılır. Bangkok’taki Dünya Sağlık Örgütü (DSÖ) Asya Ofisinden enfeksiyon hastalıkları uzmanı Dr. Carlo Urbani, durumu incelemek üzerine Hanoi’ye gelir ve Chen’de görülen hastalığın, o güne kadar bilinmeyen bir durum olduğunu fark eder ve hastalığa Şiddetli Akut Solunum Yolu Sendromu (SARS) adını verir. DSÖ’yü bilgilendirir, Vietnam Sağlık Bakanlığı’nı ikna ederek yolcu taramalarını ve izolasyon önlemlerini başlatır. Chen, Hanoi’deki tedavisinin ardından durumun ciddiyeti üzerine Hong Kong’a sevk edilir, ancak orada ölür. 8 Nisan 2003’te The Wall Street Journal’dan bir gazeteci, Dr. Jiang'ı arayarak telefonla röportaj gerçekleştirir. Time da haberi ışık hızıyla verir: “Beijing’in SARS Saldırısı”.

Show #702 Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Wednesday 19th February 2020. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story to save you time. Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too. 95.6 GWH OF EV BATTERY CAPACITY DEPLOYED GLOBALLY IN 2019 "In 2019, 95.6 GWh of battery capacity was deployed globally in newly sold passenger EVs, an increase of 30% over the year prior, according to Adamas Intelligence’s web-based EV Battery Capacity and Battery Metals Tracker." reports Green Can Congress: "At the global level, battery electric vehicles (BEVs) were responsible for 90% of all passenger EV battery capacity deployed in 2019, followed by plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) with 7% and hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) with the remaining 3%." https://www.greencarcongress.com/2020/02/20200218-adamas.html MOBILITY 2020: WHAT THE YEAR HAS IN STORE More than 30,000 pre-bookers have registered in advance for an ID.3 r , and this year they will be able to take delivery of their car. This means that Volkswagen Group’s vision of building e-cars for the masses is now becoming reality. Further fully electric models from the ID. Family will follow in the coming years. By 2029, Volkswagen plans to launch up to 75 pure electric models across the Group, plus around 60 hybrid vehicles. In 2020, the first two Volkswagen plants designed purely for electric cars will begin series production. In Anting and Foshan, the SAIC VOLKSWAGEN and FAW-Volkswagen joint ventures will produce around 600,000 pure electric vehicles on the MEB basis every year. MEB production “Made in China” is then to be gradually expanded to 15 different MEB models across different brands by 2025. In 2020, stricter emission standards will come into force in India, opening a new chapter in the subcontinent’s passenger car market. In an unusual step, the government decided to skip one emission standard stage and switch directly from the current BS-IV (Euro 4) to BS-VI (Euro 6) standard. Thanks to timely developments, all Volkswagen Group models based on the ‘INDIA 2.0’ strategy will comply with these standards. With emissions of 2,654 Megatons, India is the third largest CO2 emitter worldwide after China and the USA. In California, cars with low CO2 emissions have been allowed to use so-called HOV lanes (high-occupancy vehicle lane) since this year – even if only one person is in the car. These lanes are otherwise reserved for cars with at least two occupants. All vehicles that fall below specified emission levels are marked with a “clean air sticker”. https://www.volkswagenag.com/en/news/stories/2020/02/mobility-2020-what-the-year-has-in-store-for-motorists.html CITROËN C5 AIRCROSS PHEV UP FOR ORDER IN THE UK "Citroën has officially opened the order books for the new C5 Aircross plug-in hybrid in the UK. It is being offering it in two grades named the Flair and Flair Plus. Pricing starts at £35,340 and £36,815 respectively. Customer deliveries will begin in mid-2020." reports electrive: "the plug-in hybrid offers a system output of 165 kW, to which the electric motor contributes 80 kW. While the flagship sedan’s peak charge rate is still a bit behind the Model 3’s peak charge rate of 250 kW on a V3 Supercharger, it is nevertheless impressive, highlighting the fact that Tesla’s vehicles are in a constant state of improvement." says Simon Alvarez at Teslarati: "Tesla owner-enthusiast Eli Burton of the My Tesla Adventure YouTube channel recently paid a visit to the Fremont factory on his Raven Model S Performance. The vehicle only had 5% of charge left on its 100 kWh battery pack, giving the flagship sedan the opportunity to experience a full charging session on one of the site’s V3 Superchargers." https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-model-s-hits-181-kwh-peak-supercharger-v3-video/ TESLA CAN SELL IN COLORADO, BUT RIVIAN CAN’T "A new bill, SB 167, has been introduced in Colorado which would allow electric vehicle manufacturers to bypass the state’s direct-sales ban." writes electrek: "Rivian is looking to follow a similar model as Tesla, as the model makes sense for them as well. But they don’t fall under the same exception as Tesla in Colorado law, so they need this new bill to pass. Colorado is important for Rivian. The state is one of the larger electric vehicle buyers in the US, coming in fourth place in per capita EV sales. It’s also full of exactly the kind of adventure truck/SUV buyers Rivian is targeting with their R1T and R1S." Ted Cannis, Director Global Electrification at Ford Motor Company spoke. "In Germany, many think that the fuel cell will come soon. Regardless of whether I speak to French, Canadians or Chinese, there are no concerns about the battery because customers are waiting for hydrogen. However, battery technology is now available, is constantly evolving, charging is becoming easier, the requirements of the government are moving in this direction and so are our competitors - there is currently a critical mass moving towards battery-electric cars." "We have a lot of new customers who haven't owned a Ford yet. One of the dealers I spoke to has 12 reservations - all new customers. They are also more than ten years younger." "Our experience has shown that the sound will not be an obstacle. We were on the road in the USA with prototypes of the electric F-150 pickup . Nobody missed the sound of a V8 there! This shocked us almost more than with the Mustang. On request, we will also have a very authentic sound in the Mustang Mach-E." " the entire software can receive over-the-air updates so that the car stays fresh over the years. We want to offer our customers a modern user experience that develops over time - as they know it from websites or apps." "the "FordPass" app. Here, our European customers can get access to over 125,000 charging points from the NewMotion roaming network and can easily bill for Ionity's HPC loaders and charging." "With electric cars, the software is at least as important as the hardware, yes. Now we have a vehicle in which almost all modules can be updated. So why shouldn't we take advantage of this to provide improvements to the customer? And of course, for that we have to constantly develop the software." "The battery cells come from LG Chem from Poland. From there they are shipped to Mexico, where we assemble them into ready-to-install battery packs - right next to the production of the Mustang Mach-E. Until recently, we only had a few hybrids in Europe, but Ford has been using lithium-ion batteries since 2012. Show #640 Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Thursday 14th November 2019. FORD AD FOR MUSTANG MACH-E [audio] "Ford’s upcoming battery-electric crossover SUV won’t just feature Mustang-inspired styling, it’ll also wear the famed sports car’s name. Officially christened Mustang Mach-E, the Blue Oval’s latest EV is due to show its face this Sunday, November 17th." says Greg Fink for Motor1.com: "Ford will live-stream the reveal of the new model with the assistance of actor Idris Elba, who's set to join the Mach-E on stage. If prospective buyers like what Ford shows, they can then head over to Ford.com at the end of the reveal (which is slated to come to a close at 9:30 PM EST) and reserve a Mustang Mach-E by submitting a $500 refundable deposit" And as the car won't have a manual gearbox, with EV's being as easy to drive as an automatic, they're missing a trick if they don't call it a Mach E Auto. https://www.motor1.com/news/382153/ford-mustang-mach-e-ev-crossover-name/ LUCID MOTORS, CONFIRMS LUXURY EV PRODUCTION IN ARIZONA "After almost three years, the Tesla competitor has finally confirmed that the local Planning and Zoning Commission of the Arizona city approved its multi-year site plan on Nov. 6. Land grading has already begun in September, and the company estimates that production will start before the end of 2020." reports IBTimes.com: "Atieva, the parent company of Lucid, couldn't get the funding to get Lucid Air, the premier electric vehicle (EV) that the company unveiled back in 2016, in the line of production. But with a $1 billion investment from Saudi Arabia through the kingdom's sovereign wealth fund in 2018, issues concerning its eventual roll-out dissolved." https://www.ibtimes.com/tesla-competitor-lucid-motors-confirms-luxury-ev-production-arizona-2863689 VOLKSWAGEN BREAKS GROUND ON EXPANSION FOR ELECTRIC VEHICLE PRODUCTION IN UNITED STATES Volkswagen of America today marked the start of construction for its electric vehicle production facility. The Chattanooga site, where production begins in 2022, will be Volkswagen’s North American assembly base for electric vehicles. Volkswagen began long-range EV production earlier this month in Zwickau, Germany, and will then roll out assembly worldwide, including in Anting and Foshan, in China, in 2020 and in the German cities of Emden and Hanover by 2022. The Chattanooga site will be VW’s North-American hub for EV manufacturing. Volkswagen’s investment of about $800 million in the Chattanooga facility will require the addition of about 1,000 jobs. The production version of the ID. CROZZ will initially be assembled in Zwickau. Production of that vehicle is set to begin in Chattanooga in 2022. GERMAN STATES HAVE BEEN COURTING TESLA There's a great analysis of the Gigafactory 4 decision from Bloomberg reporters. "Ramona Pop [a mayor of Berlin and Senator for Economy, Energy and Enterprises] responded with a two-page letter that waxed lyrical about Musk as a pioneer and visionary and offered financial sweeteners to attract him to a city bustling with a vibrant tech scene and a network of auto research institutes." says Bloomberg: "Two federal states that border France also touted their virtues. he European Gigafactory would sit on the outskirts of Berlin, with an additional engineering and design center within the city limits. Labor costs in eastern Germany are generally lower than in the traditional engineering hubs in the southern part of the country." But is labor cost the real issue here? As per Reuters: "While the average combustion engine takes 3.5 hours to make, and the average transmission requires 2.7 hours of assembly, an electric motor takes only about 1 hour to assemble, consultants at Alix Partners said in their Global Automotive Outlook study. Today the biggest cost factor is still battery packs, which amount to between 30% and 50% of the cost of an electric vehicle." Back to Bloomberg: "The area where Tesla plans to put the factory, called Gruenheide just east of Berlin in the state of Brandenburg, provides quick access via the Autobahn and a link to public transport. It’s a site that BMW had considered before choosing the city of Leipzig a few hours south for a new factory in 2001. The government in Brandenburg, one of five federal states in the former communist east, also lobbied hard to win over Musk, offering at least 100 million euros in aid." Reuters reports on the financial aid being given to all auto makers to ensure GErmany's dominance: "German carmakers and suppliers are tapping in to a 1 billion euro ($1.10 billion) fund set up by Germany to increase battery cell production and are further aided by a government-funded research facility to increase battery cell development know-how." And the key section from the Bloomberg piece: "Musk had a demand that was as clear as it was hard to execute for notoriously bureaucratic Germans: to build the site as swiftly as the one in Shanghai, according to Brandenburg’s economy minister, Joerg Steinbach."; We know all future Gigafactories will be all-in-one solutions, they will make the battery, the powertrains and stamp the vehicles. We know it will be MOdel Y for Germany. https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2019-11-13/elon-musk-s-german-factory-started-with-love-letter-from-berlin https://uk.reuters.com/article/uk-tesla-gigafactory-germany-strategy/german-automation-talent-powers-musks-battery-move-to-europe MAJOR BATTERY STORAGE FACILITY PLANNED IN GOLETA "the 60-megawatt set of lithium-ion Megapacks — utility-scale batteries that have 60 percent more energy density than the Powerpack — would store power and return it to the grid when needed." reports the Santa Barbara Independent: "SoCal Edison turned to storage after the proposed Puente natural gas power plant in Oxnard was denied by the California Energy Commission in 2017. Goleta’s existing Ellwood peaker plant, like many gas-powered plants, faces retirement. Smaller 10- and 20-megawatt battery storage facilities are planned in Carpinteria, Ventura, and a second one in Goleta." https://www.independent.com/2019/11/13/major-battery-storage-facility-planned-in-goleta/ TESLA PLANS NEW MASSIVE V3 SUPERCHARGER STATION CONNECTING LA TO PHX "Tesla has promised to incrementally roll out more Supercharging stations over time, with specific emphasis on its new V3 technology, reportedly in the process of starting construction on a huge, 28-stall Supercharger station that will connect Los Angeles to Phoenix." reports Steven Loveday at InsideEVs" https://insideevs.com/news/382042/tesla-plans-v3-supercharger-station-la-phx/ And from BuffaloXpress.com: "The Tesla Supercharger station in Kettleman City between San Francisco and Los Angeles and isn’t Tesla’s most significant on the earth. However, it’s the largest within the US, and it’s the most representative of Tesla’s vision for charging stations. It’s equipped with not solely 40 Supercharger stalls but in addition batteries, solar arrays, and even a lounge for Tesla owners. The brand new Supercharger V3 stalls ought to make the trip a little bit faster with nearly twice the power output than the V2 chargers." http://buffaloxpress.com/telsa-to-upgrade-its-largest-supercharger-station-with-v3-technology/4106/ TESLA SECURES MANUFACTURING LICENSE FOR GIGAFACTORY 3 "Tesla has been able to get its manufacturing license for Gigafactory 3 in Shanghai, China. With Tesla already demonstrating Chinese produced Model 3s to the Chinese press, this step is seen as the last official hurdle before Tesla officially begins production and starts the process of ramping up consumer cars “Made in China.” says CleanTechnica: "Media outlet SINA reports that MIIT has agreed to allow Tesla (Shanghai) Co. Ltd. to be a pure electric passenger car manufacturer." https://cleantechnica.com/2019/11/14/tesla-secures-manufacturing-license-for-gigafactory-3-lets-roll/ LA ADDS HUNDREDS OF EV CHARGERS TO STREETLIGHTS "The City of Los Angeles has installed EV charging stations directly attached to more than 130 streetlight poles. Hundreds more are planned. The streamlined solution to electric-car charging has been deployed in major European cities but not so much yet in America." according to Bradley at Electrek: "The city’s conversion of street lights to energy-efficient LEDs made the EV solution possible. The fee for charging is typically $1 to $2 per hour. Parking is free. The stations are operated by charging network companies familiar to EV drivers, such as ChargePoint, EVGo, Flo, and GreenLots." Show #443 Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Sunday 14th April 2019. It’s Martyn Lee here and I’ve been through every EV story I could find today, and picked out the best ones to save you time. Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too. Hello to new Patreon PRODUCER Pete Stothard holland DAVID FINCH : I’ve just listened to the Saturday podcast. I’m not sure if it’s worthy of a little correction or not, but you quoted Elon as saying deliveries starting May / June, when in fact his tweet said “hopefully June / July”. RENE SCHNIEDER: "I just got a letter these minutes that the standard range plus is available for order in Switzerland: „From today on the Model 3 Standard Range Plus is available in Switzerland." TOM RAFTERY: "It that time of year to organise the summer holidays (possibly I’ve left it a bit late already!). And I want to bring the family to Norway to show them what a country with a high penetration of Evs can look like (and to take in the beautiful scenery Norway can offer). I have been trying to find information on EV hire options in Norway, and there isn’t a lot out there (that I found)." RIVIAN R1T TRUCK & R1S SUV WOW NYC AHEAD OF AUTO SHOW "The New York Auto Show doesn’t officially open to the public until April 19th, but that doesn’t mean the fun hasn’t already started. The weekend before an auto show opens is usually the real kickoff party, with manufacturers trying to get a jump on the competition, and many opt to show off their new vehicles before they hit the show floor the following week. That precisely what Rivian did with its R1T electric pickup truck and R1S electric SUV." reports Tom " InsideEVs.com: "These events were mostly for VIPs and reservation holders; they weren’t press events where we could schedule interview time, so unfortunately nothing new was learned. I suspect if Rivian is going to announce any new news, it will be done so during the Auto Show for maximum exposure. As you might expect, the crowd was extremely enthusiastic, and it reminded me of how it feels at Tesla events. Since most of the people in attendance were reservation holders, they were already on-board with what Rivian is doing. Plus, for most, it was their first opportunity to see the vehicles that they plunked $1,000 down on to reserve." https://insideevs.com/rivian-wows-nyc-r1t-electric-pickup-truck-video/ MITCH EVANS EARNS FIRST FORMULA E VICTORY FOR PANASONIC JAGUAR RACING Panasonic Jaguar Racing’s Mitch Evans claims an emotional first victory in Rome with DS Techeetah’s Andre Lotterer in second and HWA Racelab’s Stoffel Vandoorne bringing home both his and the team’s first podium finish in the ABB FIA Formula E Championship. Evans stalked the back of Lotterer’s car in the opening phase of the race, with the DS TECHEETAH driver unable to pull a gap. With both teams and drivers evenly-matched on pace, it became a tactical battle about when to deploy ATTACK MODE. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9ccQUaK9RlM AUDI ANNOUNCES Q2 L E-TRON WITH 38 KWH BATTERY FOR CHINA From the Audi Press Office: "two electric models will make their series debut in Shanghai: the Audi e-tron* and the Q2 L e-tron, which was designed especially for China and is built in the Foshan plant. The compact SUV, which will be delivered to the first customers in the summer of 2019, is even experiencing its world premiere in Shanghai. Audi CEO Bram Schot: “With both the Audi Q2 L e-tron and Audi e-tron electric models, we are launching a new era in China with our partner FAW. The compact SUV will be produced locally already this year and, beginning in 2020, the Audi e-tron will also be produced in China, our largest and most important market worldwide.” The body of the Audi Q2 L e-tron is 33 millimeters (1.3 in) longer than that of the basic model. The car is powered by an electric motor on the front axle that mobilizes 100 kilowatts and 290 newton meters (213.9 lb-ft). With a battery capacity of 38 kilowatt hours, it has a range of up to 265 kilometers (164.7 mi), determined according to the local homologation procedure." https://www.audi-mediacenter.com/en/press-releases/audi-at-auto-shanghai-2019-11479 POLESTAR 2 PUTS FOCUS ON CHINA WITH MANUFACTURING SITE AND FIRST POLESTAR SPACE LOCATION CONFIRMED At the Chinese debut of the Polestar 2 in Shanghai, Polestar confirmed that production of the new electric performance fastback will take place in Luqiao, Zhejiang Province, from early 2020. The production facility will also produce world-class Volvo and Lynk & Co. models that share their core CMA platform with Polestar 2. Polestar 2 is the first car on the modular chassis to feature a fully electric drivetrain. Thomas Ingeleth, Chief Executive Officer at Polestar: “Being able to produce Polestar 2 in the Luqiao plant in China shows the clear synergies of our ownership structure and gives us a great industrial advantage. With Geely and Volvo Cars as our owners, we are able to leverage their expertise in many different ways. Manufacturing is one of the most important areas, helping us accelerate our progress and entry into the market with the confidence that Polestar 2 production will begin as planned early next year.” Following the confirmation in 2018 that the first-ever Polestar Space will be located in Oslo, Norway, Polestar has now confirmed that the first Polestar Space in China will be located in central Beijing. Establishing the Polestar footprint initially in Oslo and Beijing highlights two of the world’s most influential electric car markets as primary targets for the brand. The Polestar Space in Beijing will open in late 2019 and signals the roll-out of Polestar Spaces in China. Around 20 facilities spread between 11 Chinese cities will be opened during 2020 – about one third of all initial Polestar Spaces expected to be opened globally. ELON MUSK ANNOUNCES APRIL 22 AS START OF TESLA FULL SELF DRIVING "Tesla announced a new event – Tesla Autonomy Investor Day – on April 22 at its headquarters in Palo Alto. There are not many details about the event, besides the topic of autonomous driving. According to Elon Musk, investors can expect a demo of full autonomous driving," says Mark Kane for InsideEVs.com: "One of the biggest projects is the Tesla Network – a fleet of autonomous cars, available for sharing. It would be a double win for the manufacturer – first because it provides another stream of revenue and second because Tesla could use cars at the end of lease (no buyout option was previously announced)." https://insideevs.com/musk-announces-april-22-as-start-of-tesla-full-self-driving/ VOLKSWAGEN UNVEILS ID. ROOMZZ ELECTRIC SUV CONCEPT IN SHANGHAI; SERIES MODEL IN 2021 Volkswagen is expanding its electric ID. product range with a multi-variable all-round model: the new ID. ROOMZZ—a zero-emission SUV in the five meter category. Volkswagen will present the concept car as part of a world première at Auto Shanghai (18 to 26 April) in an homage to China, currently the largest market for zero-emission vehicles. The series version of the ID. ROOMZZ—which follows on the more compact ID. CROZZ—is scheduled to take to the road from 2021. Alongside the ID. ROOMZZ, the ID. CROZZ and the compact ID. (all set to have a market début in 2020), other members of this new electric vehicle family include the iconic ID. BUZZ van and the avant-garde saloon ID. VIZZION (both will make their market début in 2022). in the European WLTP cycle the maximum range is 450 kilometers (280 miles). The battery is charged via an inductive interface. Conventional charging via a plug is also possible. The ID. ROOMZZ combines its IQ.DRIVE systems, enabling the concept car to navigate traffic all by itself (fully automated) as desired. Volkswagen is consolidating all assistance systems and technologies involved in autonomous driving under the umbrella brand IQ.DRIVE." https://www.greencarcongress.com/2019/04/20190414-roomzz.html QUESTION OF THE WEEK BRIAN THOMPSON Several reasons to be reticent... - Parts and service centers are not readily available -if you had rich rebuilds in your town, I would consider -I've recently had some things crop up at 70k on my 85 S that would have cost a lot had it not have been a covered under warranty. They replaced the entire battery pack. Then a couple thousand miles later the charge port went out. On the loaner they gave me, that car had 50k on it, the main screen went out... -if you had rich rebuilds knowledge, then you could go for it, but at 250k there is no, zero, zippo warranty and you would be covering the cost. If you still are interested, call and ask Tesla what the cost is to get a rebuilt high voltage battery pack, as well as getting the main CPU and screen replaced, as well as drive unit and inverter. Those are the big ticket items. If this was ten years from now and there were lots of used parts available then it would be a different situation. I would try to claw my way into a CPO car with less than 50k on it, that way it comes with 4 year 50k warranty. In the US, tesla is selling the 2012 and 2013 85s in the low $30,000 with financing. RAJEEV NARAYAN I think one should expect to have to put some money into any vehicle with > 250,000 miles, with respect to EVs the question is the longevity of the expensive bits- the powertrain and the battery. It is known that an electric powertrain generally lasts much longer, in fact I think Tesla even suggested their powertrain can go potentially > 1 million miles. With respect to the battery, I know the NMC 622 cells in most EVs nowadays can cycle about 2,000 to 3,000 times before i'ts capacity has degraded to 80 to 90%, at which point they say it's "unsuitable" for further EV use, though in my opinion that's debatable- given the C rating of most of these battery cells. My Chevy Bolt has a 60kWH battery and EPA estimate of 3.8miles/kWH, giving 456,000 to 684,000 miles. ASEER A EV is different and a million mile is not that outlandish a claim as motors run production lines 24/7 for many years and we don’t expect them to fail quickly today the same would be true for EVs and given that brakes also last longer (regen) it seems if your a highmiler EV is an obvious choice. This is before we take into consideration comfort and space. JON AKA BEARDY MCBEARDFACE Firstly I think you should go for a high mileage Tesla, I would if I could afford it. Would make a great story to write about and to follow...”Life with a super high mileage Tesla” or “High mileage Tesla....what could go wrong” JOHN FRUHWIRTH Given what I know now, Yes, I would buy a very high mileage EV but iff (if and only if) it is was a Tesla model 3. Why? Because: Its drive train is guaranteed for 1 million miles. Its batteries should last anywhere from 300k-500k miles. It's frame has been over engineered. It is the safest car on the road ...John Fruhwirth TOBE IN SAN DIEGO I for one think it'd be brilliant for you to get the super high mileage Tesla and keep us apprised of your trials and tribulations with it...if you can afford it. I presume that could at least be considered a business expense for a podcaster like you. I would definitely worry that it could end up costing costing you some pounds though. (plus in depth story about his 2012 Model S 85) MATT PISCIONE Yes. with a caveat. As someone who works as a technician for an automotive manufacturer with an EV named after something that you might find in trees, based on their battery degradation issues I would probably not. However, the mechanical components are very durable as they are shared with other vehicles. That being said, I would be much more inclined to purchase a different EV that does not have battery degradation issues. JAMES LOVES as a Mercedes Benz master tech here in California I my self have replaced six -B- class "ELECTRIC MACHINES" due to internal coolant leaks. These repairs were done under warranty thank goodness as the ELECTRIC MACHINE is a very pricey item. This front wheel drive unit is the same as the rear power unit used in the Tesla model -S-. Another thing one might consider is the battery warranty is 8 years 100k(miles) how ever a high voltage battery inspection of degradation must be performed annually and recorded.(Tesla battery Tesla drive train) if not performed or skipped the warranty is lost. This has kept me from My own purchase of a used -B- class as they are truly a blast to drive and have all the comforts of a Benz. DAFYDD Although all the electric gubbins would in all likelihood have plenty of life left in them. One has to consider, the rest of the vehicle has also done all those miles too. As have all the interior fittings. I’d be more willing to buy such a vehicle if I lived in Norway, Sweden, Finland or the like, where they routinely under-seal a vehicle for winter and clean it off and inspect the underside in spring. I’d be more willing to buy one, if the vehicle had be kept hot dry climate. Where salting roads was unheard of. CHARLIE MILNER I'm currently looking at a second had Tesla. I'm looking at up to 90,000 miles. One thing that would concern me is the suspension wear. I had an old MK4 golf that after 120k miles the tracking was adjusted as much as possible and it was only just about ok. Indicating suspension components needed to be changed. If there is evidence the tracking is ok and it's been well looked after I'd consider higher milage. The motor and battery (especially with Tesla) is not a concern to me. GARETH FROM THE CHARGEUP CAMPAIGN Although it does not meet your definition of high mileage my 2014 Leaf has been a bit of a mixed bag. Technically within the warranty period but with 96k on the clock it was outside the warranty range by about 36k. It has been pretty much reliable but I have found that I am paying for the maintenance for other people’s miles (droplink bars, track rod ends, tyres, 12 battery etc) and the charger died since as an ex taxi it had done over 4,600 rapid charges. I fixed this myself at a cost of £500 though Nissan wanted a mere £24k! My hope is that now all that work is done it will just work for quite some time. COMMUNITY And thanks to MYEV.com they’ve set us another Question Of The Week. New Stories, Bold Legends: Stories from Sydney Lunar Festival
Pamela See is one of the artists featured in the Sydney Lunar Festival in 2019. Born in Brisbane to Chinese Malaysian parents who migrated to Australia, Pamela is the artist behind the beautiful sheep lantern inspired by the traditional art of Chinese paper cutting. Her technique bears resemblance to Foshan papercutting that emerged during the Song Dynasty (960-1279 CE) in her maternal family home province of Guangdong. Using a variety of knives, this style of papercutting is also applied to thin foils of metal. Over the past 20 years, Pamela has exhibited in Australia, China and the United States of America. This includes contributing to exhibitions at the International Curatorial and Studio Program (ICSP) in the US, the Qing Tong Museum in China, and the National Gallery of Australia. Her artwork is held in several institutional and corporate collections including: The Australian War Memorial, Parliament House (Canberra), The Art Gallery of South Australia, Chinachem (Hong Kong) and Swire Properties (Beijing). She is presently undertaking a PhD at Griffith University investigating the capacity of papercut to be translated into a variety of media including: knitting, animation and sculpture. https://newstories.net.au/pamela-see/

Tuesday 29th May 2018 and this is your EV News Daily. Good morning, good afternoon and good evening! Wherever you're listening around the world, a very warm welcome from London, UK. Here is today’s news about electric cars and the future of transport. My name is Martyn Lee and I go through every EV article online so you don’t have to. We'll start with a follow up to yesterday's story about the hypermile'd Model 3, the attempt by Sean Mitchell and his hypermiling partner Erik Strait. After covering 606.2miles, using 66kWh at 110Wh/mile they were able to relax and once again dream of driving a car over 30mph. However there's a sting in the tail of this story. After trying to charge the Model 3 overnight at a Supercharger, it was refusing to take any charge. The last I heard it was being towed to a Service Centre where I imagine Model 3 experts will be waiting for it. As much as Tesla love the good publicity they'll be keen to understand what's happened here. It seems like pulling 66kWh hours isn't much from a 74/75 kWh pack. Also, the car was hired from Turo. EVS NOW COMPETITIVE, SAYS LEASEPLAN'S CAR COST INDEX Cost comparison for EVs with ICE cars has been a moving target, some say 2020 and some say 2025. But everyone agrees sales of EVs will take off once they are cost competitive. However maybe that day is...today! "In several European countries, electric vehicles (EVs) are now cost competitive with traditional powertrains. The TCO gap is rapidly narrowing in Belgium and the UK, while EVs are already cheaper in Norway and the Netherlands. That is the conclusion of LeasePlan's most recent Car Cost Index (CCI)." says Frank Jacobs for FleetEurope: "The CCI is a comprehensive, annual analysis of the Total Cost of Ownership for a small to medium-sized car (B & C segment) in 21 countries" which includes taxes, insurance, fuel, maintenance and the all-important depreciation. "TCO of EVs also varies greatly, from a low of €597 in Hungary to a high of €986 in Italy. Norway is the only country where TCO for an EV (€670) is lower than for a petrol (€731) or diesel (€722) car." TESLA SEMI SPIED BETWEEN FREMONT AND PALO ALTO Time for another sighting of the Tesla Semi which is putting in some miles, not only for testing, but also doing some work as well according to the rumours. During a talk in the Netherlands, Tesla VP of Truck programs Jerome Guillen said: "Tesla will be the first customer for its own truck. So we will use our own trucks to carry cargo in the US between our different facilities. We have (an) assembly factory in California, we have a battery factory in Nevada, so we’ll use our truck to carry things in between" Teslarati say "The latest image of the Tesla Semi was shared by Model 3 owner and r/TeslaMotors subreddit member u/AMG76, who stated that the picture was taken just this past weekend." DIESEL IS ‘FINISHED’ IN EUROPE AMID PUSH FOR ELECTRIC CARS EV's could be getting an easier ride in Europe partly because sales of diesels are in freefall and people are looking for alternatives. "European commissioner Elzbieta Bienkowska said the EU has had a “breakthrough moment” since Germany-based Volkswagen AG admitted in 2015 that it fitted diesel engines with software to cheat U.S. checks on smog-causing discharges of nitrogen oxides. This deeply affected “the emotions in society toward emissions and cleaner cars,” she said.“Diesel cars are finished,” Bienkowska said in a May 24 interview in her ninth-floor Brussels office. “I think in several years they will completely disappear. This is the technology of the past.” VOLKSWAGEN OPENING THREE NEW FACTORIES IN CHINA FOR EV BOOM "Volkswagen AG is opening three new factories in China with its local partner FAW Group" according to Bloomberg: "Two of the new facilities will be in Tianjin and Foshan, VW said in an emailed statement, adding it opened one in Qingdao on Monday. The plants will focus on bringing more sport-utility and electric vehicles for local production, the fastest growing segments of China’s auto market." "The Qingdao factory opened with the introduction of the new Bora on the MQB platform and will produce battery systems" BMW WIRELESS CHARGING AVAILABLE STARTING TODAY "Today marks the market launch of BMW’s highly anticipated wireless charging solution for iPerformance cars. BMW has been talking about it for over a year, in anticipation of the launch of their new BMW 530e iPerformance model, the first production car available with wireless charging." says Nico at BMW BLog: "The system is now available for orders and allows customers to recharge their 530e – and future PHEV models – by simply parking the car over a so-called base pad. The BMW Wireless Charging option can be ordered now as a leasing-option for the BMW 530e iPerformance. The product offer starts with Germany, subsequently followed by the UK, the US, Japan and China." ELON MUSK JUST REVEALED NEW TESLA MODEL 3 PERFORMANCE EDITION DETAILS "In response to Tesla aficionado Ryan McCaffrey, Musk confirmed on Twitter that the car will come with sport-level brakes, coupled with red calipers" according to Inverse "New brakes aren’t the only cosmetic changes coming to the car. It will be the first variant to offer a white interior alongside the standard black, as well as a carbon fiber spoiler and 20-inch performance wheels instead of the “Aero” wheels offered on the base models." SK INNOVATION BEGINS CONSTRUCTION OF 7.5 GWH BATTERY PLANT IN HUNGARY And finally, InsideEVs reports: "SK Innovation held a groundbreaking ceremony for its first European lithium-ion battery factory in Hungary." How long does it take to build a battery factory? Well even though the build starts now, it won't produce cells until early in 2020. "The batteries to be produced in SK Battery Hungary will be third-generation EV batteries, which give an EV 500km range with one charge. The company had announced in September, 2017 that it would start mass-producing of the world’s first medium-to-large NCM (nickel:cobalt:manganese) pouches. SK Battery Hungary expects to start mass-producing and supplying the batteries from early 2020. Once all the production lines are installed, the factory’s production capacity will reach 7.5 GWh per year." I’d love to spread the word about electric cars so, if you can, share this somebody who might be interested. The entire nation of China was rocked in 2011 by an incident involving a single two-year-old Chinese girl named Wang Yue. Her family called her “Little Yue Yue.” She innocently wandered onto a narrow, crowded road in Foshan, Guangdong Province. She was hit by a vehicle, in fact, two. Neither stopped. She lay broken and wounded on the road for more than seven minutes. During that span of time, eighteen people either walked or cycled past the toddler before a scrap peddler named Chen Xianmei, finally stopped to attend to her injuries. The little girl was whisked to a hospital for treatment but succumbed to her injuries and died eight days later. The whole incident, including the fact that so many people passed by the little girl and refused to render aid, was captured on a security camera. That footage was uploaded onto the Internet and it quickly stirred widespread reaction in China and even overseas. Many commentators saw this as indicative of a growing apathy in contemporary Chinese society. It has been referred to as China’s “good Samaritan problem”—widespread apathy for the hurting. But we all know, this is not just a Chinese problem. It’s an American problem. It’s a global problem. It’s an ancient problem, because it is a human problem. Thankfully our human problems have a divine solution. There is a true “good Samaritan” and we will meet him today. His impact on us can transform even the most cruel or calloused into good Samaritans who care for others. Bless Every Home “Care” Luke 10:25-37 We can be cruel Jesus replied, “A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and he fell among robbers, who stripped him and beat him and departed, leaving him half dead”(10:30). Attitude: “What’s yoursis mineand I’ll take” Action: The cruel inflictsuffering We can be calloused Now by chance a priest was going down that road, and when he saw him he passed by on the other side. So likewise a Levite, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side(10:31-32). Attitude: “What’s mineis mineand I’ll keep” Action: The calloused ignoresuffering We can be compassionate But a Samaritan, as he journeyed, came to where he was, and when he saw him, he had compassion(10:33) Attitude: “What’s mineis yoursand I’ll give” Action: The compassionate intervenein suffering
Why did we cover 2008’s “Ip Man” for our second Around the World movie? Because Donnie Yen is THE Man, not just Ip Man. Known in the West primarily as Bruce Lee’s teacher, Ip Man had a fascinating life story that Donnie Yen portrays with a Zen-like calm and a smoldering strength. This movie covers the period of the Japanese occupation of Man’s city of Foshan, China, and a cinematically exaggerated fight he had with a Japanese general.Join David, Brett, and Nicole as they dig into this film that includes constant breaking of precious household objects, food lust for a potato, and a ten-on-one fight with gnarly foley work that really makes you hear those limbs cracking.Next episode, Movie-Go-Round continues its second thematic round, rounding this rotation out with a You Did This to Us. Your pick? “The Boy in the Plastic Bubble.” Go watch the film if you haven’t! See you next Saturday!

This is Special English. I'm Liu Yan in Beijing. Here is the news. Chief government officials should resign if serious vaccine violations occurred in their jurisdictions. That's according to a revised regulation approved by the State Council, China's Cabinet, ahead of National Children's Inoculation Day, which fell on April 25th. The revision of the previous regulation on the management of vaccines was made after a scandal involving vaccines that had been stored improperly and sold across China. The case involved 570 million yuan, roughly 88 million U.S. dollars-worth of Category 2 vaccines, which are considered optional. The regulation has taken effect, intensifying management rules for vaccines, including their transportation and storage, and increasing punishments for violators. China will also raise the amount of compensation paid to those suffering abnormalities after receiving vaccination. Measures under consideration include the introduction of commercial insurance to improve fairness and efficiency in compensation. Commercial insurance is expected to play an important role in compensating people for any health problems connected with vaccines. In the past, responsibility for compensation belonged to vaccine producers or to the government. Experts say vaccination can cause side effects and result in serious physical consequence in some individuals because of a person's health condition, although the chances of developing problems are extremely low. This is Special English. The sudden death of a 14-year-old boy at a factory in Foshan city in Guangdong province has triggered a citywide campaign against the exploitation of child laborers in the Pearl River Delta hub. The campaign started on April 25th, and was launched by the Foshan bureau of human resources and social security. It aims to protect young workers in the densely populated production base in the southern province. Labor-intensive manufacturing industries including garment, food and metal, as well as hotels and restaurants will be the major targets of the special campaign. Those who violate laws and regulations will be seriously punished. Under the current law, it is illegal to employ someone under the age of 16. The crackdown follows the death of 14-year-old Wang Pan on April 11. Wang suddenly died at home after working in a local lingerie factory for more than a month. Wang lost consciousness at around 6 in the morning at the home his mother rents. He was pronounced dead after being taken to a nearby hospital. Wang's mother, who is surnamed Kuang, said her son may have died of overwork in the factory. The boy worked at the lingerie factory for 11 or 12 hours a day. Kuang is a migrant worker from Hunan province. Wang's employer, Foshan Accor, has admitted employing an underage worker and reached an agreement with Kuang to pay a compensation of 150,000 yuan, roughly 23,000 U.S. dollars. Further investigations are underway. Part of that probe will be to determine the cause of the death. You are listening to Special English. I'm Liu Yan in Beijing. Some 700 teachers from China's developed regions have been dispatched to 20 schools in Southwest China's Tibet autonomous region for a three-year program to improve the quality of education in the region. The first group of 76 teachers has arrived in Tibet, ready to take up positions in the regional capital of Lhasa, and in more remote areas including Xigaze, Nyingchi and Shannan. The program is co-sponsored by the ministries of education, finance, human resources and social security. It aims to improve education in Tibet, which is dependent on both central and regional government funding to ensure education for farmers and herdsmen. The teachers from 17 municipalities and provinces including Beijing will be divided into 20 groups to assist teaching in the schools. Under the program, 400 teachers will also be selected from Tibetan kindergartens and schools every year to receive training and hands-on experiences in schools in developed regions. The central government has carried out various programs to support Tibet's development. Under the assistance mechanism, teachers from developed areas are encouraged to take a short contract at Tibetan schools to help improve the local education. The initiative aims to concentrate the efforts in 20 designated schools to make real changes. This is Special English. (全文见周日微信。)

This is NEWS Plus Special English. I'm Yun Feng in Beijing. Here is the news. Evening viewers in much of Asia and early risers in parts of the Americas were treated to a stunning lunar eclipse recently, though clouds obscured it for some. Lucky ones saw the moon turn orange or red in what is known as a "blood moon". The hue results from sunlight scattering off Earth's atmosphere. Whoops of joy erupted at the Sydney Observatory in Australia as the moon made a brief appearance. An observatory astronomer said it was spectacular; and the cloud certainly got in the way, but people have seen it during totality, which is always the highlight to see the lovely, reddish-brown color. In Japan, clear skies turned partly cloudy as the eclipse progressed, but some people who gathered on the rooftops of skyscrapers in Tokyo saw the moon turn a rusty brown when the clouds cleared. 66-year-old homemaker Yoshiko Yoneyama said that when the sun, the moon and the earth aligned, she got the feeling that she was also a part of the solar system. Viewers in China also saw the lunar eclipse. Ten-year-old primary school student in Beijing Yu Xuan said this was his first time to see it, and he is expecting another lunar eclipse next year. This is NEWS Plus Special English. More than 470 million people have traveled in China during the National Day holiday which ended last week, up more than 10 percent from the same period last year. The travelers contributed to almost 250 billion yuan, or around 40 billion U.S. Dollars, in tourism revenue, up 16 percent year on year. In a related development, Tibet saw a record influx of 740,000 tourists during the National Day holiday. From October 1st to 7th, the autonomous region received almost 300,000 overnight tourists and 450,000 one-day travelers. The total number of tourists grew almost 13 percent compared with the same period last year. Tourism revenue hit almost 340 million yuan, or around 55 million U.S. Dollars, in the past week. This week, among all the many horrible stories in the news, two particularly stuck out ... A disturbing video caught by surveillance cameras shows a 2-year-old girl in China laying in the street bleeding, a victim of a hit and run. Even more shocking is that the toddler was then ignored by at least 18 people. Video of the incident, which took place Oct. 13, shows pedestrians and vehicles passing by the toddler, named Yueyue, after she was run over outside her family's shop in the Chinese city of Foshan. A single person stopped to help the child as she lay bloody on the narrow street. At least 18 people passed by on bikes, in vehicles, or on foot. ... and ... Philadelphia police showed on Monday the "dungeon" where four mentally challenged adults were held captive by three suspects accused of stealing their disability checks. The cramped, 6-foot-high, 15-foot-wide bomb shelter was hidden behind a steel door in the basement of a home in the city's Tacony section. The four adults were abused and kept in cellar since early October, where they were given only water to drink and fed just once a day by their captors, police said. Police also said that the wounds found on Beatrice Weston, the 19-year-old niece of the alleged ringleader, Linda Weston, where the worst wounds they had ever seen on a living person. Police Commissioner Charles Ramsey said, "I've never seen anything like this in a living person. It's remarkable that she is still alive. There is no penalty too harsh for the people that did this. The word horrific is not sufficient." Tears are not enough. I want to scream, throw up! Sickening and heart breaking all at once! Yet once again, the Xin Xin Ming advices us to drop opinions and judgments and "things can long long offend". Drop opinions and judgments and they will 'cease to offend'? BUT IN THE FACE OF SUCH TRAGEDY!? WHAT!!!??!!! When the mind exists undisturbed in the Way, nothing in the world can offend ... When no discriminating thoughts arise, the old mind ceases to exist. When thought objects vanish, the thinking-subject vanishes, as when the mind vanishes, objects vanish. Things are objects because of the subject (mind); the mind (subject) is such because of things (object). Understand the relativity of these two and the basic reality: the unity of emptiness. In this Emptiness the two are indistinguishable and each contains in itself the whole world. If you do not discriminate between coarse and fine you will not be tempted to prejudice and opinion. SUCH THINGS NOT 'OFFEND'? DON'T JUDGE OR HOLD OPINIONS ABOUT IT?? IS IT A JOKE!!?!! HOW CAN THAT BE!?! Well, far from making our hearts cold and numb to such horrors, we open our hearts wider ... so wide and spacious that it holds all the broken pieces, the ugliness and tears. Wisdom and Compassion boundless. Today’s Sit-A-Long video follows at this link. Remember: recording ends soon after the beginning bells; a sitting time of 15 to 35 minutes is recommended Please visit the forum thread here!
