Barbara Ann Fenton-Fung is an elected politician currently serving as a member of the Rhode Island House of Representatives for the 15th district. In 2020, Barbara won the 15th district seat for Rhode Island's House of Representatives against the speaker of the state house and, in so doing, became the first Rhode Islander to defeat a sitting speaker in 114 years and the first woman to represent her district. In the 2022 elections, Barbara emerged victorious in the Republican primary, gaining 92% of the vote after being challenged by Suzanne Downing. Barbara also serves as a physical therapist in addition to her legislative role at the Rhode Island House of Representatives and holds a Master of Science in Physical Therapy from Northeastern University.   Barbara joins me today to discuss how being a healthcare professional has shaped her perspective on socio-economic issues while being a Republican politician. She describes what she's learned from running her first political campaign amid the COVID-19 pandemic. She explains why it's important to bring an “investment mindset” to the Republican party when it comes to social and economic issues. She emphasizes the importance of being active in your local community and school committees. Barbara also highlights how the Republican and Democratic parties work together to address social and economic issues and underscores the unique skills women can bring as they run for public office.   “Divisiveness permeates a lot of issues, but healthcare is an area we can have a lot of bi-partisan efforts on.” - Barbara Ann Fenton-Fung   This week on Political Contessa:   Why Republicans in Rhode Island need to play a different game Barbara's experience running her first political campaign during the COVID-19 pandemic The challenges and advantages of women in politics Being the spouse of a local politician How Barbara's work in healthcare has shaped her perspective as a Republican politician Having an investment mindset in social and economic issues The willingness to help people take a different path in life Tackling homelessness, drug abuse, healthcare, and crime beyond party lines Talking about politics with a non-divisive approach Getting involved in your local government and school committees The pervasiveness of politics in our daily life Barbara's vision for her future in politics and why she believes in term limits   Related Episode:   Living the American Dream on the RI Campaign Trail with Former Congressional candidate Allan Fung   Connect with Barbara Ann Fenton-Fung:   Barbara Ann Fenton-Fung on LinkedIn Barbara Ann Fenton-Fung on Instagram Barbara Ann Fenton-Fung on Facebook Barbara Ann Fenton-Fung on Twitter   Awaken Your Inner Political Contessa   Thanks for tuning into this week's episode of Political Contessa. Allan Fung is a former congressional candidate for Rhode Island, a two-time Republican Governor nominee, and the former Mayor of Cranston, RI. During his tenure as mayor, Allan reformed his beloved city, turning it into one of the Top 50 Cities to Live in America. In addition, he has been nationally recognized for his work in fighting Anti-Asian bias and promoting Asian Americans in government. After leaving the mayor's office with an astounding 82% approval rating in 2020 due to term limits, Allan returned to practicing law as a Partner at Pannone, Lopes, Devereaux, and O'Gara. Allan is living proof that the American Dream is attainable due to his parent's sacrifices – leaving family and friends in Hong Kong to move to the U.S. and create a better life for their family. Their hard work and sacrifices, coupled with Allan's work ethic, led him to become the first in his family to graduate, earning a Bachelor's degree in Political Science from Rhode Island College and graduating with honors from Suffolk University Law School in Boston. Allan joins me today to share his experience while running for congressional office in Rhode Island. We discuss the power of connecting with voters while on the campaign trail and what Alan believes campaigning for higher office truly means. Alan shares the most memorable moments he experienced while campaigning and how Donald Trump ‘teasing' his decision to re-run for presidency impacted the 2022 General Election. We also discuss why our government needs political diversity, what American voters can do to help promote political diversity across the country, and why the Republican party needs to adopt new, modern strategies to get more voters to the polls. “As the candidate, you become the voice for those individuals.” - Allan Fung This week on Political Contessa: Allan's experience while running for Congress The value of having a supportive partner or spouse The power of connecting with voters on the campaign trail How Donald Trump ‘teasing' his decision to run for president again impacted the general election Balancing Democratic and Republican voices in higher office What RI voters can do to help promote political diversity Adopting new techniques and technology to improve voter turnout Connect with Alan Fung: Fung for Congress Website Allan Fung on Facebook Allan Fung on Twitter Awaken Your Inner Political Contessa Thanks for tuning into this week's episode of Political Contessa. Well we're back folks and you cannot miss this.   Dusting off the fun and sun of summer, the TCPAWorld team is back in action. We breakdown all the big TCPA developments over the last few months, including: The passage of TRACED and Stopping Bad Robocalls Act in the Senate and House respectively, and the gap between the two statutes and how Congress might ultimately harmonize these enactments to get to a final Anti-Robocall Bill; The Supreme Court's battle for the soul of legislative power in this nation, using the TCPA as its pawn-- and what it may mean for future TCPA rulings handed down by regulatory agencies; We review the ATDS landscape and discuss why it really looks like a true majority position is developing surrounding the definition of the ATDS; and We breakdown the Eleventh Circuit's huge ruling in Salcedo holding that unwanted text messages do not necessarily cause concrete injury for Article III standing--including an analysis of what makes Salcedo difference from other Spokeo decisions. And then we get to the incredible interview with Margaret Daum.  What a hitter! Margaret spent over a decade conducting sensitive and high-profile congressional investigations on the hill. She was actually part of the powerful Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations. My goodness– who better to help guide us through the process of these two bills (TRACED and SBRA) merging together to become one–and how best to get me (the Czar) to testify before Congress. (And who better to help guide you through any sticky Congressional investigation in the extremely unfortunate event you or someone you love (or work for) gets sucked into one.) Per usual this episode of Unprecedented is jam-packed, fast-moving TCPA excitement. Enjoy! Host: The Czar Cast:   Archduke, Duchess
