RadioRotary welcomes District 7210 Membership Chair and Past District Governor (2020-21) Highland Rotarian Tony Marmo who describes some of the many benefits of becoming a Rotarian. He personally likes the way that Rotary not only aids local community organizations but also has a global reach. With over 200 nations that have active Rotary clubs, Rotarians around the world can find partners to promote such goals as peace, literacy, clean water, maternal health, and disease prevention (notably the work toward eradicating polio). Rotary was founded in 1905 by four professionals who met weekly for lunch to plan community improvements. Today's Rotarians have expanded their reach by including meetings for breakfast, lunch, or dinner, and also by working with satellite clubs, with the high school and college adjuncts (Interact and Rotaract), and with online e-clubs. On the day before World Polio Day 2022 North Rockland Rotarian and 7210 Past District Governor (2006-07) Carole Tjoa, currently the District PolioPlus Chair, once again joins Radio Rotary to update the progress on polio eradication. In 1985 in the Philippines Rotary became the first to use the vaccines to eradicate polio. In 1988 Rotary began a worldwide eradication program, working with the World Health Organization, UNICEF, and the U.S. CDC, joined by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation in 2007. This team has eliminated wild polio in all but two nations (Pakistan and Afghanistan), but the United States has recently experienced a resurgence of a type of polio in Rockland County, NY, with some spillover to adjacent regions. One person was partly paralyzed by the disease. Health authorities quickly moved to provide vaccination against the type of polio that surfaced here, brought by a visitor or immigrant from another part of the world. Founded in 1947 by Brewster Rotarian and 7210 Past District Governor (1962-63) Dr, Samuel “Rollo” Ross, Green Chimneys is recognized as a worldwide leader in animal-assisted therapy and educational activities for children with special needs. RadioRotary learned all about this very unusual facility for children on the autistic spectrum when the current when Dr. Edward Placke visited the program by Zoom. A staff of 500 helps the children, ages 6 through 20, but much of the healing and learning (outside of regular schoolwork) is through spending time with the many animals of the farm—22 horses, alpacas and llamas, all sort of raptors, a flock of geese, and more. Even students who do not speak to other children or their parents, sometimes learn to speak to the animals. The goal at Green Chimneys is to aid children for two or three years and then return an improved child to his regular home and school. RadioRotary is visited, via Zoom, by 33-year Rotarian and 7210 Past District Governor (2006-07) Carole Tjoa, a member of the North Rockland Rotary Club and currently the District PolioPlus Chair. Mrs. Tjoa tells the story of how Rotary, when polio was completely eliminated from the U.S. in 1979, took the vaccines that stopped the disease to the Philippines and on September 29 began its long association with polio eradication. Rotary spent about $760,000 to immunize 6 million children in the Philippines; polio was then often called “juvenile paralysis” because its primary victims were often less than 5 years old. The success of the Philippine project led Rotary to launch PolioPlus in 1985 with the goal of worldwide elimination. Soon joined by the CDC, WHO, and UNICEF and later by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, the immunization program since then has spent $10 billion to immunize more than 2.5 billion children, eliminating wild polio virus from everywhere but Pakistan and Afghanistan, which continue to have fewer than 200 cases annually between them. [28:50] When the current pandemic became a global reality, suddenly Bob Hooey found his speaking business more or less obliterated.   In this episode, Bob expresses to Greg how he felt and how he dealt with the situation while perhaps realizing his and and maybe our biggest fears.  After overcoming the initial shock, Bob realised, "I can't travel,  but my message can."  Pulling from years of experience, he decided  instead of spiralling downward, he could pivot. So even at age 71, he found his new learning curve and embraced his new playing field. "I'm still learning," he says. What Bob did, many of us can do too as he discovered new technologies and used the power of partnering, creativity and the often forgotten value of simply asking for help to move forward. Additionally Bob also shares the wisdom of some of his past experiences, much of which can apply to all of us and our businesses today in his own entertaining way. FREE BOOK As a gift to our listeners, Bob is offering, free to all readers a copy of his latest book,  Succeed! Idea-rich strategies to succeed in business despite global disruptions.  Bob Hooey is the Canadian "Ideaman."  He's an accomplished speaker, prolific author of over 30 books on leadership and career success and travels the world (when its open) sharing his innovative Ideas At Work. He's also a long-time Distinguished Toastmaster, Past District Governor and Accredited Speaker. Bob lives in Egremont Alberta Canada and can be reached at Ideaman.net or SuccessPublications.ca.

Rotary District 7210’s Past District Governor Dr. Jim Yarmus (2007-2008) discusses his journey from Cuba in 1960 to becoming a U.S. citizen, a Civil Engineer, a Rotarian (Spring Valley Rotary), and a district governor. A Past President of the Society of Civil Engineers, today Dr. Yarmus is a professor of Project, Construction, and Planning Management. As a member of Engineers without Borders, he recently took nine of his students to Honduras for hands-on engineering work in implementing power plants and clean water projects. A few of the projects he is most proud of as Past District Governor are the district’s literacy, publicity, and water and sanitation awards from Rotary International, especially the latter, Dr. Yarmus says, since literacy, clean water and sanitation are part of the “key” to “peace in the world and saving children’s lives.” --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/radiorotary/support
