In this episode, Jamie speaks with long-time senior technology executive David Weiss, Operating Partner at Thoma Bravo and Clearhaven Partners.  Jamie finished the interview, turned to her producer and said, “Now that is what excellence in leadership looks like!” David says that while many leaders have a gift of natural charisma, he relies on a very intentional approach to leadership that has turned out to be a strength.  Drawing upon Eduardo Briceno's work, he advises leaders and teams to know when they are in the “performance zone” and when they are in the “learning zone.”  He describes the stages he sees companies grow through and why assessing complexity is just as important as measuring revenue.  David gives us a short primer on how private equity firms work and discusses 3 of 10 levers of scale he has identified.  One of those levers is culture and he introduces his very interesting “Energy Creator Framework” making the case that it's not enough to make sure you have the right people; your organization needs the right energy from those people.  David is an extraordinary leader; you will find yourself playing and replaying this episode in the weeks to come.   During this episode, David refers to the following work: The Performance Paradox: Turning the Power of Mindset into Action by Eduardo Briceno What Leaders Really Do by John Kotter (especially Chapter 3)   Executive Access is produced by The Ideal Life, a platform that provides coaching, community, and content for people to grow both personally and professionally.

To succeed in a fast-changing world, individuals and companies know they must create a culture of growth, where experimentation and feedback are encouraged, and learning is integrated into the everyday. Yet we often get stuck in a well-worn pattern of habits that don't move us forward. Why? How do you get better at something? You do a lot of it. The 10,000 hour rule. Practice makes perfect, right? Maybe not. What if our focus only on performing doesn't lead to the hoped for improvements, and instead our performance suffers? Well, there is a strange phenomenon that runs counter to what most of us would think is a key ingredient to improving our performance--that is--if we spend all our time performing, we actually hinder our performance. Worse yet, this applies to us as individuals, to our teams, and in our organizations, and it's called The Performance Paradox. Eduardo Briceño knows a lot about this phenomenon and he has written a new book on how to recognize it, and what to do about it. The book is aptly titled The Performance Paradox: Turning the Power of Mindset into Action, and is published by Random House. We discuss how to • avoid falling into the chronic performance trap that stagnates growth • identify when and how to unlock the power of mistakes • integrate learning into daily habits in ways that stick • lead teams that constantly improve and outperform their targets • grow your skill level and output simultaneously and for the long term Discover how to balance learning and performing to bolster personal and team success with this revolutionary guide from a world renowned expert on growth mindset.  Eduardo Briceno's life is a testament to the profound impact that a growth mindset can have on personal and professional success. His relentless pursuit of knowledge and his mission to help others unlock their full potential continue to inspire individuals and organizations on their journeys toward excellence.

Doing, doing, doing. We can get stuck in a perpetual state of busyness to get things done. But being in a chronic “performance zone” can lead to stagnation over time. The “learning zone”, however, is when we take a step back to reflect on our experiences and look for ways to improve. That's where a growth mindset comes in - actually believing that we can get better. “In order to engage in learning, we need to believe that we can improve, we also need to understand how to improve and we need to have a reason or reason that we care to put in the effort to improve.” ~ Eduardo Briceño, Episode 374 Eduardo Briceño is a global keynote speaker, facilitator, and author who guides many of the world's leading companies in developing cultures of learning and high performance. His TED Talks have been viewed over 9 million times. Alongside Carol Dweck, the leading growth mindset researcher, Eduardo has founded Mindset Works, an organization dedicated to fostering lifelong learning.  On this episode of Behavioral Grooves, hosts Kurt and Tim talk to Eduardo about his new book “The Performance Paradox: Turning the Power of Mindset into Action” which is a practical guide on how to spend more of your time in the learning zone, instead of just the performance zone. Eduardo provides tips for leaders to create a culture of learning, such as framing core values, identifying habits and systems to support both performance and learning, and modeling learning behaviors visibly. To Tim's delight, the conversation with Eduardo uses musical examples from Beyoncé and Dave Grohl to highlight the importance of practice and reflection. The Performance Paradox: Turning the Power of Mindset into Action by Eduardo Briceño https://amzn.to/44PzMow Discover how to balance learning and performing to bolster personal and team success with this revolutionary guide from a world-renowned expert on growth mindset. “An essential read for fostering learning, performance, and a growth mindset . . . I wholeheartedly recommend it.”—Carol Dweck, bestselling author of Mindset A Next Big Idea Club Must Read To succeed in a fast-changing world, individuals and companies know they must create a culture of growth, where experimentation and feedback are encouraged, and learning is integrated into the everyday. Yet we often get stuck in a well-worn pattern of habits that don't move us forward. Why? Because many of us get trapped in the Performance Paradox: the counterintuitive phenomenon that if we focus only on performing, our performance suffers. How can we give ourselves the space to experiment and grow while also delivering high-level results? Fostering growth mindset to elevate performance is Eduardo Briceño's specialty. As CEO of Mindset Works and in his work with Fortune 500 companies, he discovered that mastering growth—personal, organizational, and financial—hinges on navigating the crucial balance between learning and performing. In The Performance Paradox, Briceño reveals how to • avoid falling into the chronic performance trap that stagnates growth • identify when and how to unlock the power of mistakes • integrate learning into daily habits in ways that stick • lead teams that constantly improve and outperform their targets • grow your skill level and output simultaneously and for the long term We can achieve more tomorrow than we do today if we develop the belief that we can change and the competence for how to change. With Briceño's innovative and refreshing framework of balancing learning and performing, individuals and companies can reach their boldest aspirations. Walking is good exercise and the pace at which you walk can make it even better. This episode begins with a brief discussion on the rather remarkable benefits of a brisk walk over a casual stroll. https://www.healthline.com/health-news/people-who-walk-faster-tend-to-live-longer How do you get good at something? Some people think it takes experience or lots of practice. Well, there is another way – a more effective way to improve your abilities at anything you choose to do. That is what Eduardo Briceño is here to explain. Eduardo has a wonderful Ted talk about this called How to Get Better At The Things You Care About (https://www.ted.com/talks/eduardo_briceno_how_to_get_better_at_the_things_you_care_about) and he is author of the book The Performance Paradox: Turning the Power of Mindset into Action (https://amzn.to/45Hs4NY) You may not yet be aware of it yet but there is a movement in the United States that is encouraging people to own less AND feel good about it. Imagine the freedom of not being burdened by home ownership or ownership of just about anything else. Wouldn't that feel great? For many people the answer is NO. Ownership is the primary path to wealth creation. One of those people sounding the alarm about this is Carol Roth who is author of the book You Will Own Nothing (https://amzn.to/44wDGCr). He is the author of The Performance Paradox: Turning the Power of Mindset Into Action*. Many of us have heard the invitation in recent years to have a growth mindset — but how do you establish this for an entire team? In this episode, Eduardo and I explore his research on systemizing the learning zone to help teams perform at the highest levels. Plus, we explore tactical shifts that managers can make in order to align intention with reality. Key Points In order for teams to performance at top levels, they need to spend intentional time in both the performance zone and the learning zone. Internal competition can hold back teams from learning — and can over focusing on the present instead of the future. Systemizing the learning zone helps build a culture where this is expected and normal. Setting expectations for feedback, role plays, and study groups are a few of the many ways organizations can do this. Eliminate forced ranking systems, as they often over-perpetuate a culture of performance only vs. performance and learning together. Include learning goals in professional development, not only performance goals. This normalizes and systemizes the learning zone as a critical part of work. In this episode, we're joined by Eduardo Briceño, renowned author of "The Performance Paradox: Turning the Power of Mindset into Action". Eduardo sheds light on the power of feedback as the cornerstone of learning and high performance in a remote work world. Eduardo's insights reveal the importance of cultivating a growth mindset and encouraging team members to solicit feedback for continuous improvement. Learn how leaders can create a culture of learning and empower their remote teams to thrive, all while unraveling the mysteries of the performance paradox. Key Takeaways 1. Feedback is Essential: Feedback is the most important strategy for learning, improving, and achieving high performance, especially in remote and hybrid work environments. It helps individuals understand the impact of their actions and allows for continuous improvement. 2. The Power of Growth Mindset: Embracing a growth mindset is crucial for personal and professional development. Leaders should encourage team members to see themselves as constantly evolving and capable of improvement, rather than being limited by fixed traits. 3. Focus on Soliciting Feedback: Creating a culture where team members actively solicit feedback empowers them to drive their own growth. Leaders can set the stage by being open to feedback themselves, modeling a learning culture for the entire team. 4. Balancing Praise and Improvement: When giving positive praise, avoid attributing success solely to innate abilities. Instead, focus on specific behaviors and their positive impact. This approach encourages individuals to keep improving and seeking feedback. 5. Regular Check-Ins and Opportunities: Regular team check-ins and personal conversations are critical in remote and hybrid work settings. Deliberately create opportunities for feedback discussions, allowing team members to address progress, challenges, and growth opportunities collaboratively.
