So much of what we talk about on here is change – navigating change, embracing change, creating change. I think it's fair to say that if you're listening, change of some form is on your mind. We're no strangers when it comes to figuring out how to get from A to B. But what happens when we have to change… how we're changing? What happens when we plateau with our progress, and the old models of learning just aren't sticking anymore? What does jumping to that new S Curve look like? That's where our guest today comes in. Eduardo Briceno is the co-founder of Mindset Works, a firm dedicated to bringing Carol Dweck's growth mindset to workplaces world-wide. He's out now with The Performance Paradox, a book dedicated to that question of changing how you're changing. From Caracas, Venezuela to the Stanford Business School, Eduardo has navigated all kinds of change, even a fear of public speaking. So what do we have to learn from him?

How often do you hear someone say they're “not a math person,” or sociable, or creative? Or, conversely, how many times have you heard someone described as a “natural?” All too often, we accept that we are born with inherent abilities that we cannot change. In other words, a fixed mindset. Stanford-trained mindset expert Eduardo Briceño has been working to transform that narrative. As co-founder of Mindset Works with Stanford psychologist Carol Dweck, Briceño says the key to success is not simply effort, focus, or resilience, but the growth mindset that creates them. In this episode, we discuss our obsession with labels, strategies for shifting our mindset spectrum from fixed to growth-oriented, how to objectively open our minds to new or opposing thoughts, performing self-assessments to understand our progress toward a growth mindset, and our biological predisposition for survival rather than happiness or thriving. In this interview about growth and development, author and growth mindset expert Eduardo Briceño shares how leaders, teams, and organizations can create a culture of growth, where experimentation and feedback are encouraged, and learning is integrated into the everyday. Integrating learning and performance is the central idea behind Eduardo's book “The Performance Paradox.”Eduardo shares why people in any profession should embrace the “Learning Zone” - a space where they can be deliberate about improvement - rather than constantly focusing on minimizing mistakes and peak performance. He talks about how leaders and coaches should create psychological safety so members of a team can experiment, and even fail, without negative repercussions. He makes the case that people should approach their work with two goals in mind - getting things done and improving. They can do that by proactively soliciting feedback, performing trial and error activities, and reflecting on mistakes. Eduardo gives advice for how leaders should handle mistakes and how they can best model being a learner. He shares how companies like Microsoft, General Mills, Skratch Labs, New York Life, and Bridgewater Associates have benefited from welcoming the “Learning Zone” and how CEOs like Satya Nadella and Ray Dalio have openly celebrated their own mistakes and learned from the feedback they received after those mistakes. Eduardo Briceño is a global keynote speaker, facilitator, and guide supporting leaders cultivating growth mindset cultures. He is a Pahara-Aspen Fellow, a member of the Aspen Institute's Global Leadership Network, and an inductee in the Happiness Hall of Fame. Doing, doing, doing. We can get stuck in a perpetual state of busyness to get things done. But being in a chronic “performance zone” can lead to stagnation over time. The “learning zone”, however, is when we take a step back to reflect on our experiences and look for ways to improve. That's where a growth mindset comes in - actually believing that we can get better. “In order to engage in learning, we need to believe that we can improve, we also need to understand how to improve and we need to have a reason or reason that we care to put in the effort to improve.” ~ Eduardo Briceño, Episode 374 Eduardo Briceño is a global keynote speaker, facilitator, and author who guides many of the world's leading companies in developing cultures of learning and high performance. His TED Talks have been viewed over 9 million times. Eduardo provides tips for leaders to create a culture of learning, such as framing core values, identifying habits and systems to support both performance and learning, and modeling learning behaviors visibly. To Tim's delight, the conversation with Eduardo uses musical examples from Beyoncé and Dave Grohl to highlight the importance of practice and reflection. The Performance Paradox: Turning the Power of Mindset into Action by Eduardo Briceño https://amzn.to/44PzMow Discover how to balance learning and performing to bolster personal and team success with this revolutionary guide from a world-renowned expert on growth mindset. “An essential read for fostering learning, performance, and a growth mindset . . . I wholeheartedly recommend it.”—Carol Dweck, bestselling author of Mindset A Next Big Idea Club Must Read To succeed in a fast-changing world, individuals and companies know they must create a culture of growth, where experimentation and feedback are encouraged, and learning is integrated into the everyday. Yet we often get stuck in a well-worn pattern of habits that don't move us forward. Why? Because many of us get trapped in the Performance Paradox: the counterintuitive phenomenon that if we focus only on performing, our performance suffers. How can we give ourselves the space to experiment and grow while also delivering high-level results? Fostering growth mindset to elevate performance is Eduardo Briceño's specialty. As CEO of Mindset Works and in his work with Fortune 500 companies, he discovered that mastering growth—personal, organizational, and financial—hinges on navigating the crucial balance between learning and performing. In The Performance Paradox, Briceño reveals how to • avoid falling into the chronic performance trap that stagnates growth • identify when and how to unlock the power of mistakes • integrate learning into daily habits in ways that stick • lead teams that constantly improve and outperform their targets • grow your skill level and output simultaneously and for the long term We can achieve more tomorrow than we do today if we develop the belief that we can change and the competence for how to change. With Briceño's innovative and refreshing framework of balancing learning and performing, individuals and companies can reach their boldest aspirations. About the Author Eduardo Briceño is a global keynote speaker, facilitator, and author who guides many of the world's leading companies in developing cultures of learning and high performance. He is the author of The Performance Paradox: Turning the Power of Mindset Into Action*. Many of us have heard the invitation in recent years to have a growth mindset — but how do you establish this for an entire team? In this episode, Eduardo and I explore his research on systemizing the learning zone to help teams perform at the highest levels. Plus, we explore tactical shifts that managers can make in order to align intention with reality. Key Points In order for teams to performance at top levels, they need to spend intentional time in both the performance zone and the learning zone. Internal competition can hold back teams from learning — and can over focusing on the present instead of the future. Systemizing the learning zone helps build a culture where this is expected and normal. Setting expectations for feedback, role plays, and study groups are a few of the many ways organizations can do this. Eliminate forced ranking systems, as they often over-perpetuate a culture of performance only vs. performance and learning together. Include learning goals in professional development, not only performance goals. This normalizes and systemizes the learning zone as a critical part of work. Most importantly, he continues to enjoy lifelong learning every day.   In this episode Dr. Gaye Lang and Eduardo Briceno discuss: Having a growth mindset as a way to learn tolerance  Improving through collaboration with others  Giving people grace to ask you questions  The role of leaders in tolerance    Key Takeaways:  Having a growth mindset is key to developing an attitude of tolerance. You need to start with the belief that you can change and that you can be better.  Receiving feedback from others, taking it in and committing to change is the best way that you can constantly improve. Being able to be humble enough to receive feedback will take inner work and self-awareness.  Give people the grace and space to ask you questions. If they don't ask questions, approach them and point out what you'd want them to know. You can't grow if you don't see anything else, you have to be able to see other options. Leaders must be the first to step up in the journey towards growth in the area of tolerance. They must set an example and walk their talk. People follow the leader and the members see if the leader is being genuine or not.    “We have to do self-work. That's really important. We also can collaborate with others to grow together because other people can help us see what we don't see. Learning on our own, learning with others and helping others to learn.” - Eduardo Briceno   Connect with Eduardo Briceno: Twitter: https://twitter.com/ebriceno8  Website: https://www.briceno.com/home | https://www.wiringgrowth.com/ | https://www.mindsetworks.com/  LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/eduardo-briceno/    Important Resources:  Mindset, by Carol Dweck: https://smile.amazon.com/Mindset-Psychology-Carol-S-Dweck-ebook/dp/B000FCKPHG  Carol Dweck's TED Talk on growth mindset: https://www.ted.com/talks/carol_dweck_the_power_of_believing_that_you_can_improve?language=la  Eduardo's TEDx Talk on growth mindset: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pN34FNbOKXc    Connect with Dr. Gaye Lang: Don't forget to subscribe to the show, so that you don't miss a single episode; and please leave a rating and review. In this podcast episode, we explore having a Growth Mindset (Designer Mindset) and how to view life as seeing things in a way that you are not bad at something, but something you may be bad at now but can improve on over time through constant iterations.Growth Mindset:"A growth mindset is “the understanding that abilities and understanding can be developed” (Mindset Works, n.d.). Those with a growth mindset believe that they can get smarter, more intelligent, and more talented through putting in time and effort."SourceFixed Mindset:"On the flipside, a fixed mindset is one that assumes abilities and understanding are relatively fixed. Those with a fixed mindset may not believe that intelligence can be enhanced, or that you either “have it or you don’t” when it comes to abilities and talents."SourceOur definition of a designer mindset:Someone who takes personal responsibility for themselves and actively seek out to test out new systems/applications into their life with the goal of improving in a specified area. This is done by constant iteration, each iteration reflecting on the previous and designing a new iteration that is ideally better than the previous iteration.Websites/Tools mentioned:https://www.udemy.com/Content mentioned:Book - Psycho-Cybernetics by Maxwell Maltz

Mindset coaching can be boiled down in its simplistic form to the narrative or story we tell ourselves in our head. It's not about positive FB memes or just a gratitude journal. It the story we tell ourselves, which stimulates our physiology, which forms an action feedback loop. It's actually simple in concept. Listen and find out!

Mindset works without a doubt. We all have that ability to push ourselves onto greater and greater achievements.Gaining the success we want simply by using the power of our brain. However most people don't as they only focus on what they don't have in their lives. They spend their time and energies looking at what is missing instead. In today's podcast episode with the amazing Eric James, you will hear how one man turned his life on its head simply by deciding that he wanted more. This is the most amazing conversation (if we say so ourselves) that shouldn't just be listened to one time as you are mowing the lawn. This is one of those conversations that you should study like an MBA.If you want to know if mindset works like he says it does, then simply listen to the story at the end and watch your own life change forever. How He Proved That Mindset WorksAs you will hear through the show Eric's life was quite different from where he is today, taking photos around the world, inspiring millions. He was in a dark, dark place, where through panic attacks, and a poor self-image his life was only going one way.He couldn't even get a job in Blockbusters video store due to the stress he felt putting himself into the interview position.Eric however had a dream that he could get a better life for himself. He discovered this through one of the strangest routes possible. After a conversation with a marijuana loving gentleman one day he was directed to a book by Tony Robins, the American mindset guru.Eric, hadn't heard of Tony at that time, but through reading the pages of the book realised that without a doubt mindset works if he could only apply those lessons.Over the next few years, Eric began challenging himself to tackle bigger and bigger obstacles as he watched his life and his bank balance improve exponentially.Mindset Works Again - He Took It To A New LevelOnce you get to the point that you know that everything you want starts within yourself, you will never look back.Eric, had moved on from the scared and timid individual that would shake and sweat during crisis.Eric now was so on his game that he could dream so big that it actually could take him into space.Like we all do, Eric took lots of flights, and would waste time flicking through the in-flight magazines left for our enjoyment. Most of the time, there is nothing in those pages other than adverts for perfumes and the odd semi interesting article. When your mind starts looking for opportunities every piece of information you get given can be the key to a new amazing adventure. This was the case with Eric, and he saw an opportunity to meet one of the greatest exponents of the "Mindset Works" practice - Richard Branson.Show HighlightsDuring the episode we discussed why mindset works with Eric through such weighty topics such as:How as a small child he remembers always being excited by the opportunities that occurred around him, which he still has today! What he did to get himself in a two way shoot with another person to go up in space with Sir Richard Branson by pure hustle! How an online magic site, became his first online business and was a huge success much to his personal surprise! The magic of meeting a man smoking marijuana who taught him the ultimate formula of success ever! Why the way you feel at any moment of your life can be changed into a positive state of mind…it's purely down to usAnd lastly proving that mindset works…..How the biggest goal you can hope to achieve will actually be the easiest one to actually achieve! How You Can Change Your Mindset TooOf course the first thing you need to do is listen to this show and subscribe to every episode that we deliver through Join Up Dots.Secondly, you need to start surrounding yourself with like minded individuals who really want to go for it.Not the mates that just drag you down the pub on a Friday night, but the ones that want to challenge themselves to do more everyday. If you can't find these easily then look for local sports clubs, evening classes, and those people will come into your life. Then you need to start taking action in your life, to gain the belief that mindset works for you, as much as everyone else.Once you believe in yourself and you can see the results then you are truly on your way to greatness.Lastly, you have to keep doing it.Don't just think that you can be all inspired for a week and then fall back into your old habits when the miracles don't appear. You need to say "This is the new me and this is how I live" day in day out until the mindset works become second nature.
