Episode #531: Wellness Through Innovation: Patrick Sandone on the GUIDE App for Military and First Responders

HALO Talks

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 10, 2025 28:08 Transcription Available

In this episode, host Pete Moore sits down with longtime friend and former investment banker, Patrick Sandone. Sandone has a diverse background in private equity, venture capital, and entrepreneurship. After earning his MBA from Columbia, he ventured into his family's automotive business, but quickly realized his true passion lay elsewhere. He eventually moved on to the firm DLJ, and eventually shifted into entrepreneurship to create the transformative GUIDE App. Designed to aid first responders, military personnel, veterans, and others in high-stress professions, GUIDE provides anonymous support, microlearning, community interaction, and wellness practices aimed at building resilience and promoting mental and emotional well-being. Listen not to learn how his own experiences and passion for personal development fueled the creation of GUIDE and the significant impact it's already making. Regarding the critical importance of anonymity, Sandone states, "If you're in some of these professions that may have a real macho culture around them, you may not want to tell other people that you're diving into this world, that you're meditating, taking wellness courses, that you're getting in touch with how you feel about things, and so on. This is completely anonymous. And for most people that have access to the app, it it may be the only anonymous way that they can jump in, and that it's a safe haven where you can get help, get support, and learn without anyone else knowing about it."  Key themes discussed Founded GUIDE to support high-stress professionals' wellbeing. Hybrid business approach: Plans, gut, passion, accessibility. High app usage, ongoing clinical trial results pending. Anonymous community fosters self-improvement and reflection. Partnered with a PhD for university collaboration. A few key takeaways:  1. Personal Transformation Journey: Patrick discussed his career shift from investment banking and private equity to starting his own company after burning out. His journey from dealing with intense stress to focusing on wellness became the foundation for GUIDE. 2. Focus on First Responders and High-Stress Professions: GUIDE is specifically designed to help first responders, military veterans, and individuals in high-stress professions build resilience and wellness. The uniqueness lies in its complete anonymity, allowing users to engage in without fear of being stigmatized.  3. Microlearning and Interactive Features: The GUIDE app offers microlearning courses, interactive community support, and scheduled wellness practices like meditation and journaling. These features ensure that users can integrate wellness into their daily routines effectively and consistently, mirroring the approach to physical wellness. 4. Scientific Validation and Impact: The app's effectiveness is backed by clinical trials conducted with reputable institutions like the University of Pennsylvania. Results showed significant reductions in anxiety and improvements in overall wellness and motivation. 5. Growing Adoption and Financial Viability: Despite challenges in securing funding from public entities, the app has seen substantial adoption, including onboarding major police departments like the Philadelphia PD. The company is profitable and aims to balance doing good with financial sustainability, showcasing a new model for mission-driven businesses.

PREVIEW - The Emerging Kingdom w/ Author Scott Smith (The LIFE WORKS Podcast w/ Mark Botros) In this captivating interview: Scott Smith is an entrepreneur, author, and managing member of the C Squared Fund. He was an early pioneer in structured finance on Wall Street, originating the first mixed-property commercial mortgage conduit and securing a billion-dollar line of credit from DLJ. He developed the model for securitizing loans that became the cornerstone for mortgage-backed securities today. Scott also helped structure the financing for the first phase of President Nelson Mandela's Redevelopment Program, which provided affordable housing for some 11,000 families near Soweto, South Africa, and paved the way to provide housing for many more families throughout the nation. While still in finance, Scott founded Kidz Magazine in 1995, an early example of user-generated content. The monthly publication invited students to submit content that ranged from stories and poems to puzzles and drawings. The publication grew from a local magazine to an international publication with an audience in the millions that spanned 30 nations. Scott's work in education led him to co-found two Colorado charter schools, Summit Middle School and Peak-to-Peak Charter School, the latter of which is ranked among the top schools in the nation by Time Magazine and U.S. News & World Report. As an entrepreneur Scott is a co-founder of Massively Parallel Technologies and Fathym, as well as the founder of FinaTech. Massively Parallel is the developer of Blue Cheetah, a software platform that automates the analysis and modernization of legacy code, so it can be migrated to the cloud. Fathym is a low code/no code platform that enables the rapid development of enterprise IoT solutions for the cloud. Scott developed FinaTech's Augmented ROI ® solution, which dramatically improves yields for investors in Private Equity funds. [00:09:17] How Much are we Spending, Taxing, and Collecting? [00:12:18] A New Source of Inflation [00:15:06] Who stands to pay the most under the new tax arrangement? [00:17:47] Who would be against this? [00:19:10] The infrastructure is already in place to make the whole country wealthier [00:21:06] The people who collect our taxes, would also administer basic income for all [00:21:24] Doing Away with Welfare [00:22:59] Who knows about this incredible secret? [00:25:02] Would this idea get you killed? [00:25:36] What can people do to support this idea? [00:26:06] How long would this take to implement? Scott Smith is an entrepreneur, author, and managing member of the C Squared Fund. His latest book, "The Emerging Kingdom" explores the relationship between money, the economy, and our personal wellbeing. It also explores the spiritual realm, free will, and how wildly off-track our opinions can be. It turns out we are running our technologically advanced economy on an outdated operating system.

Few bands can really be described as influential, most either affecting the latest pose or regurgitating a nostalgic vibe. On the other hand, some bands are so ahead of the curve, it can take time for the rest of the world to catch up. That's the case with Drive Like Jehu's sophomore 1995 album Yank Crime, which in the worlds of 90s rock, sounded like a runaway train of mixed up genres - post-hardcore, math rock, emo, post-punk, and more that weren't invented yet. It's not speculation to call this record and this band influential - members of At The Drive-in, Deftones, Modest Mouse, Jimmy Eat World, and more have weighed in over the years on DLJ's unique place in 90s rock canon.   Songs in this Episode: Intro - Here Come The Rome Plows 22:22 - Luau 32:22 - New Intro Outro - Do You Compute   Support the podcast, join the DMO UNION at Patreon. Scott Smith is an entrepreneur, author, and managing member of the C Squared Fund. He was an early pioneer in structured finance on Wall Street, originating the first mixed-property commercial mortgage conduit and securing a billion-dollar line of credit from DLJ. He developed the model for securitizing loans that became the cornerstone for mortgage-backed securities today. Scott also helped structure the financing for the first phase of President Nelson Mandela’s Redevelopment Program, which provided affordable housing for some 11,000 families near Soweto, South Africa, and paved the way to provide housing for many more families throughout the nation. While still in finance, Scott founded Kidz Magazine in 1995, an early example of user-generated content. The monthly publication invited students to submit content that ranged from stories and poems to puzzles and drawings. Paid sponsors were classroom-friendly advertisers. The publication grew from a local magazine to an international publication with an audience in the millions that spanned 30 nations. Scott’s work in education led him to co-found two Colorado charter schools, Summit Middle School and Peak-to-Peak Charter School, the latter of which is ranked among the top schools in the nation by Time Magazine and U.S. News & World Report. As an entrepreneur, Scott is a co-founder of Massively Parallel Technologies and Fathym, as well as the founder of FinaTech. Massively Parallel is the developer of Blue Cheetah, a software platform that automates the analysis and modernization of legacy code, so it can be migrated to the cloud. Fathym is a low code/no code platform that enables the rapid development of enterprise IoT solutions for the cloud. Scott developed FinaTech’s Augmented ROI® solution, which dramatically improves yields for investors in Private Equity funds. Scott is the author of The Financial Freedom Act, a book that develops the basis for a Congressional bill that would replace income taxes with a universal payments tax, which would slash the tax rate to 0.2%, balance the budget, and provide a basic income, healthcare and college for all U. S. citizens. Scott lives in Boulder with his wife, Sheri, founder of the Indigo Education Company. He has six children and enjoys painting galaxies in his spare time.

NEW COMMUNIST MANIFESTO!? VIKTOR SHVETS SAYS REPAYING GLOBE'S HUGE DEBT IS CRAZY! Banker & Author, The Great Rupture, proposes more government financial control, a Universal Basic Income

Viktor Shvets' medicine for overcoming our greatest financial challenge in decades - record global debt - is daring and controversial: Forget about repaying the massive bill of as much as $500 trillion since this would lead inevitably to a collapse in asset prices, he says, from homes to 401(k) pension plans. The global economy is wedded to technology and "financialization" of everything from mortgages to esoteric corporate and consumer loans. The idea of old-fashioned lending practices with simpler pieces of notes and clear cut lenders is a dim memory. Loans today have been financialized with every part - from principle to interest - sliced and diced and sold off to multiple investors and traders. Viktor Shvets' ideas will have many skeptics and critics, including the host of this podcast, since the real price to be paid could be surrendering our personal sovereignty to state governments as the new path to "freedom." But Shvets sees a future that can't be easily dismissed as a wild dream. For that reason, his new book is a fascinating study. Imagine that by the 2040s, Harvard College is shuttered, its hallowed halls impenetrably overgrown with miles of vines — closed for lack of demand in Ivy-League education. It’s just one jarring possibility suggested in Viktor Shvets’ thought-provoking deep-dive into the challenges facing today’s world: The Great Rupture – Three Empires, Four Turning points and the Future of Humanity – Do we need to be free? (Publisher: Boyle & Dalton.) “The lessons of the last five centuries were unequivocal — without freedom, there could be no prosperity or happiness. However, does this still hold true in the Information Age?” Shvets asks. He expertly and compellingly distills the lessons learned over the last five centuries, and projects these into the future. Could the Information Age be rewriting the recipe for individual and national success? According to Shvets, modern technologies are disrupting the structure of our societies, altering every facet of our lives, from the nature of work and what we intrinsically value to how we are informed, entertained and educated — it promises to be a far deeper disruption than Industrial Revolutions. Humanity is at a major turning point, and how we respond to the merger of technology and financialization will decide our future. Will it be capitalism or communism, feudalism or despotism? The Great Rupture explores the weakening nexus between freedom and prosperity and what that means for the future of humanity. From the birth of our modern world, pivotal events have led to the collapse of non-Western civilizations — Mongol warriors sweeping across Eurasian steppes; the Black Death and a re-awakening of human spirit; Zheng He’s voyages and the collapse of Novgorod republic; and finally, the ban on printing in Arabic. What can we learn from these historical events to better prepare ourselves for the future? As we hurtle toward that uncertain future, Shvets writes we must decide whether our cherished individual freedoms are still necessary for success and prosperity, or if in adapting to new technologies, non-Western civilizations are now better positioned for this new world, creating highly illiberal and possibly brutal orders that might no longer suffer from stagnation of ideas or wealth. For the first time in at least five centuries, we have an opportunity and tools to build a different society and economy. The book explores specific policy choices that might help us navigate this treacherous transition. Will we embrace the challenge? Author Viktor Shvets, born in Kiev, then the capital of the Soviet Ukraine, is a global strategist at Macquarie Bank in Hong Kong. In his almost four-decades-long investment banking career, he worked in Sydney, Melbourne, London, New York and Moscow at a number of global investment banks, such as Baring Securities, Deutsche Bank, DLJ, Lehman Brothers and Credit Su --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/john-aidan-byrne0/support

Tom welcomes Brent Johnson of Santiago Capital back to the program to discuss his controversial "Dollar Milkshake Theory." The name for this theory comes from the concept of extracting oil from a neighboring property by "drilling" a longer straw. The United States has this magic straw and regularly uses it to suck up the world's capital. His theory's controversial idea is that US equities are going to go to all-time highs along with a stronger US dollar at the expense of most foreign currencies. Brent believes there will be a pullback in equities around the election or early next year; his theory has yet to play out but will eventually, but he is prepared to be wrong. If the US provides dollars to the rest of the world, then his thesis will be invalid; however, he doesn't believe that will happen. He explains why the world's monetary system does not have a reverse gear if it contracts or slows down, it breaks, and the system begins to collapse. That is why central banks have to re-collateralize the system regularly. They are just trying to keep the system afloat, as debt-based currency is being created, it's also being destroyed. If you own gold or have US dollars, you will do well in the coming storm. Eric Satz (rhymes with “cats”), founder and CEO of Alto IRA, is a serial entrepreneur who’s seen both wins and losses. Eric knows investing is no longer just for the wealthy, and is living out his mission of delivering 21st-century investment opportunities to everyone, even non-accredited investors. Eric is a former investment banker and early-stage investor with a passion for nurturing startups and raising capital. He teaches an entrepreneurship class to high school students in Nashville and served on the Board of the Tennessee Valley Authority from 2015-2018. Through Alto IRA, Eric is making alternative asset investing available to all by giving people the support they need to choose amd make their own investments using their IRA savings.   Podcast Highlights Who is Eric Satz? Eric is a product of his parents, two very different individuals. Both had significant impacts on who Eric became in life with his mom bringing the entrepreneurial mindset and his father the steadiness and in many ways an entrepreneurial spirit of his own. Eric started out his career as an entrepreneur selling classically selling lemonade and delivering newspapers. Once he graduated, he went from academia to Wall Street to a company called DLJ. It was there that he worked with a number of entrepreneur clients. From DLJ, Eric opened up a coffee bar in New York City in the same year that Starbucks opened their first NYC venue. That was Eric’s first real failure, but luckily that paved the way for Eric to get back on Wall Street. Long story short, Eric has opened an online foreign currency exchange, since moved to Nashville, started an online organic grocery delivery business, and venture capital firm. It was at that last one where Eric discovered the opportunity to invest an IRA in alternative assets, also known as the alternative IRA. Now, Eric’s mission is to give everyone in America to have the choice in retirement. If nothing changes the way we invest today we will have 25 million Americans living in poverty by 2050. Retirement and Location The financial industry has gone to investments in ETS mutual funds and index funds, and that means the expectations for returns shouldn’t be any higher than 4-6%, which is a big problem for people that are looking to retire. Another problem is the public market has changed, the average person no longer has the opportunity to participate in most deals until they are already overvalued. Most people raising money don’t know they can accept IRA money as investment, as much as people who have money in their IRA know they can invest it in privately owned businesses. 90% of all savings in the country reside in retirement accounts. Eric’s alternative IRA platform has solved this problem by making it simple and easy for people to invest their IRA money. There are a lot of sophisticated investors don’t know that this kind of investing is even possible. The Alternative IRA Alternative assets are not publicly traded securities which can be bought through a traditional broker. Also, a self directed IRA is not an alternative IRA. With a self directed IRA, you only have the choice between the approved list of publicly traded securities. Retirement savings dollars should be invested in long term, illiquid assets because those are the assets that will generate the returns you need to get to actually retire. Investing in liquid assets like stocks and mutual funds for retirement is exactly backwards. Accredited Investors The idea of an accredited investor has its origins in the Securities Act in 1933 and 1934. They were originally created to protect investors from shady people investing their money in railroads that were never going to be built and at the time, they probably
